after your day is done and join us for a cocktail and to unwind and chat with other BCDS members. It’s our attempt to make the meetings more of a social event as well as educational. So, join us at 6 for an hour of respite before Dr. Lin’s presentation at 7 PM.

Always a successful event, the 2012 NJDA meeting, will be held on June 22-23 in Long Branch, NJ at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa. A successful event, it has been set up to be a very family friendly and the accommodations are superb, not to mention the wonderful beaches, pools and amenities. In addition, there are great things to do locally -so plan on bringing the entire family for a weekend of fun and the quality of dental education characteristic of the NJDA.

Our Executive Council is reviewing the preliminary details in order to have the BCDS participate with the Big Apple Dental Meeting, to be held in March 2012 at the Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah, NJ. !is has always been a successful meeting with very good speakers. Please stay tuned.

Please remember: Amalgam waste must be re-registered beginning October 1st.

!is promises to be a fantastic year and we need your help. Look here and at our BCDS website for more information about continuing education and camaraderie with colleagues. !is is your society: Please consider becoming involved.

Present: Dr. Nicholas DeRobertis, Chair; Dr. Dan Feit, President; Dr. Lon Rosen, Secretary-Treasurer; Dr. Frank Graham, President-Elect; Dr. John Chibbaro, Dr. Ilya Lipkin; Dr. Mark Samani; Dr. Mark Simpson; Ms. Carol Bensky, Executive Secretary.

Dr. DeRobertis called the meeting to order. !e following was discussed:

!e only open slot for a presentation was the February joint meeting with Passaic Dental Society. Dr. Simpson stated it was initially planned to have residents from various dental residency programs present a multi-topic presentation however, the residents (and their advisers) were not able to commit to a program of this type, mainly due to the length of the lectures the residents are required to present.

!erefore, the program for the February meeting will feature Dr. James Fine, a periodontist who teaches at Columbia University and is a world-renowned lecturer.

It was also agreed that presenters for monthly meetings should occur not more frequently than every two years, so as not to repeat the same material. A caveat was made for presenters who could be scheduled to lecture on a yearly basis if their subject matter was di"erent than that presented in the prior lecture.

Ms. Bensky said that at this time we have over 550 email addresses of members and we should probably be doing more of our member contact electronically. Both the ADA and the NJDA have moved in this direction.

!is should probably begin with next year’s newsletter (as supplies have already been purchased for this year’s publications). Although we have tried a number of times to ask the membership if they would prefer electronic or paper, the responses

have been few, at best, so it was agreed that when the change is made to an all electronic-format newsletter, the BCDS would arrange to copy and mail the newsletter to those members with unavailable email addresses.

!e ADA will be introducing electronic newsletters for some of the specialties.

An email reminder of the meetings will be sent to the members one week prior to each meeting.

!e second BCDS-sponsored Walk-a-!on was held September 25th and the turnout of members was quite poor.

Discussion: Should we continue to support organizations such as the Footprints in the Sand Foundation and/or should the BCDS align itself with dentally related programs, such as Give Kids a Smile or oral cancer screenings, etc.

Dr. Samani will work with Footprints to get articles on what they do and projects they support so we can publish the information in our newsletters.

Ms. Bensky will contact Dr. Roshong to see what we need to do to get more involved with the Give Kids a Smile program and Kenese Robinson from the BC Cancer Coalition re oral screenings.

Dr. Feit has been in touch with the chair of the Big Apple Dental Meeting to see if there’s some way BCDS can get involved, as a group, with that meeting. We need to try to determine how many dentists from Bergen County (and New Jersey) actually attend the meeting.

A suggestion was made to select one of the courses to be given in 2012 and ‘sponsor’ it by paying all or a portion of the speaker fee. In return, we could ask for a portion of the fees collected for the course to be returned to us. Another suggestion was to ask if our members could get a ‘member discount’ similar to the one given to the members of the Bronx County Dental Society (the primary sponsor of the meeting) and/or to pay for the BCDS members who attend the course we sponsor.

Dr. Feit will speak with the meeting chair and keep us updated. We need to ensure that our participation will bene$t the BCDS or it’s not worth getting involved. Once we determine our level of involvement, it will be brought to the general membership for approval.

At the September meeting of the BCDS, the topic of who is invited to attend the EC meetings was discussed. If the meetings are to be open to any BCDS member, we need to publicize when and where they take place.

All agreed that we need to determine what our legal responsibility is regarding the status of Executive Council meetings. Dr. Graham suggested he would contact Mr. Art Meisel for his input and clari$cation.

!e EC minutes will be published in the newsletter.

A letter was received from NJDA asking if we want the dues structure to remain as is or if we need an increase. All agreed that there is no need for a dues increase at this time.

A letter asking that we publicize a program being sponsored by the Community Health Improvement Partnership of Bergen County on Prescription and OTC Drug Abuse, to be held in December at Touchstone Hall (on the Bergen County Health Care Campus) in Rockleigh, NJ. In addition to the meeting, they wanted to know if there are any members who have an interest in this topic or other health related topics. If there is enough interest from dentists, they will apply for CE credits for those who attend.

All agreed that we can let the members know about the program. In addition, we will let NJDA know about the program as there may already be dentists involved in these areas.

Dr. DeRobertis reported on a letter that recently appeared as an op-ed piece in the Bergen Record from a past editor of Scripps Howard News Service that was very detrimental to dentists. Dr. Graham sent this on to the ADA, who said that this letter has been appearing in newspapers across the country. !e ADA is now in the process of dealing with letters of this nature through their legal department. Any further action will depend on the ADA reply.

One purpose of the BCDS is to bring news to and educate both the members and the public about dentistry. We also need to continue to better publicize what we’re doing to all the members.!e decision to allow members one free meeting a year – after attending and paying for two meetings – will also

be publicized in the newsletter as this may be a good way to encourage meeting attendance. Respectfully submitted, Carol Bensky, Executive Secretary

Apexi#cation and Revascularization in Endodontics — 2CE Credits

Traditionally, immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis/abscess are treated with apexi$ca-

tion. Apexi$cation is a method to induce a calci$ed barrier in a root with an open apex or continued apical development of an incompletely formed root in teeth with necrotic pulps (AAE 2003). !e disadvantages of apexi$cation are that the canal walls remain thin and continued root development may not occur. Such teeth are prone to fracture after root canal therapy. Recently, revascularization has been recommended to treat immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis/abscess. Revascu-

larization procedures have been shown to result in increased thickening of the canal walls and continued root develop-ment to strengthen the immature teeth.

1. To understand how to manage immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulp and apical periodontitis/abscess2. To be able to treat the immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulp and apical periodontitis/abscess using

modern tissue regenerative strategy Dr. Louis M. Lin received a BDS in 1964 from Chung Shan Medical University, Taiwan, a PhD in 1972 in Pathol-

ogy from the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, Oklahoma City, OK and his DMD in 1976 from UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School, Newark, NJ. In 1974 he received a Certi$cate in Oral Pathology and in 1979 a Certi$cate in Endodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and Board Eligible at the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He served as the Director, Postgraduate Program in Endodontics, UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School from 1982-2000, Chair of the Department of Endodontics from 1997-1999 at UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School and Chair, Section of Endodontics at UCLA School of Dentistry from 2000-2002. From 2002-present, he is the Director, Advanced Education in Endodontics, New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Lin has more than 80 peer review publications and abstracts and is the chapter author of three endodontic textbooks. He is also an editorial member of several journals.
