Powhatan’s annual budget retreat con-cluded last week after

two days of meetings between the Board of Supervisors and the directors of county agen-cies. Department heads came with wish lists in hand, but said they understand revenues are tight.

“There are some things we need and a lot of things we’d like, but we understand the position everyone is in,” Sheriff Gregory Neal said at the start of the retreat at the library, which formally kicked off the budget season and offered supervisors the chance “to keep up with what’s going on with county departments,” according to County Adminis-trator Carolyn Bishop.

The Sheriff’s Offi ce request-ed funding for an administrative assistant for the county’s investigators, another emergen-cy dispatcher – a request echoed by Floyd Greene, director of emergency management – and money to retain a narcotics investigator, which has been paid for with a grant.

Neal also asked the Board of Supervisors to consider increas-ing the county’s hazardous-duty contribution to the Virginia Retirement System.

“We’re busy,” said Neal. “When the economy goes down, our business is one of the few that goes up.”

There were approximately 21,000 emergency calls for service in 2010, up from about 17,000 in 2009, said Neal.

“One way or another, we’re going to provide law enforce-ment for Powhatan,” he said, but added, “I don’t think we’re the one’s at this point in time who should take cuts.”

Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Beasley asked the board for $7,000 this year to pay the salary of a special prosecutor who handles cases in the Juvenile and Domestic Rela-tions Court. A grant, which has

Decision to advertise position came during meeting last week

By Michael CopleyStaff Writer’

Ahead of the departure of county Finance Director Stephanie Davis, the Powhatan Board of Supervisors directed Carolyn Bishop, county administrator, to proceed with steps to fi ll the soon-to-be-vacant position.

The decision, which was unanimous, came during a special meeting last week.

Initially there was some dis-agreement among supervisors about the best short-term steps.

Supervisors Carson Tucker worried about fi lling the position before of a larger effort to restruc-ture county government is com-plete. Supervisors Robert Cosby and Jason Moore pushed the board to fi ll Davis’ position as soon as possible.

“We have a person that’s leaving and we need to see what’s out there,” said Cosby. “We need a fi nance director.”

Davis, director of fi nance, human resources and information technology services, will step down Feb. 7 for a job in the private sector.

During the eight years she worked in the position, Davis’ workload grew as sometimes-disparate responsibilities were lumped together. The fact isn’t unusual in growing localities, according to Powhatan’s tempo-rary attorney.

But to attract suitable candi-dates, Bishop pared down the responsibilities that had fallen under the position. Geographic Information Services (GIS) – a digital mapping and address program – will be shifted to the planning department. The county’s comprehensive services, an agency that helps troubled youth and their families, will report to social services.

Moore said he is still uncom-fortable with the fi nance director continuing to oversee aspects of the information technology (IT) department.

“We just don’t have anywhere else to put it right now,” said Bishop.

Bishop said IT supervision is generally the responsibility of a deputy assistant county administra-tor, but that position doesn’t exist yet in Powhatan.

Cosby warned his colleagues to “be prepared to pay [a new fi nance director] a comparable salary” to other localities.

Powhatan 4-H club offering a number of new opportunities

This is a great time to discover all the opportuni-ties Powhatan County’s 4-H program provides. 4-H is an exciting program designed for youths ages 5 to 19 who have an interest in develop-ing citizenship, leadership and life skills. Several new 4-H club opportunities are now available in the fi eld of animal science.

A new 4-H club with a focus on poultry begins meeting in January. This club will offer youth an opportunity to raise and breed their own chickens, and then learn to show in competitions at the state and local levels. Another recent addition is the Powhatan 4-H Rabbit Club. Members showed their project rabbits at the Virginia State Fair in October and plan to travel throughout the state for competitions. If your child enjoys riding or just being around horses, there are also several equine clubs meet-ing throughout the county. Members do not have to own a horse to join a horse club.

The 4-H Cloverbuds are specially designed for boys and girls ages 5 to 8 as an introduction to 4-H. The Powhatan Cloverbuds meet on the fi rst Tuesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m. in the large conference room of the Powhatan Library. A joint effort between 4-H and the Powhatan Library will bring Cupcake Creations, an afterschool workshop for grades 5 through 8. The program will take place Feb. 22-23 from 3 to 5 p.m. and feature Sheila Hinkle of Café Littlebury.

If you’re still looking for something different, contact the local extension offi ce for information about starting a new 4-H club. For details about joining an existing 4-H club, register-ing for an after-school program or volunteering for Powhatan County’s 4-H program, contact Cathy Howland, 4-H Extension Agent, at 598-5640 or email [email protected].

Information can also be found on the Virginia Cooperative Extension website under local offi ces, Powhatan, at www.ext.vt.edu.

The Powhatan Extension Offi ce is located at 3910 Old Buckingham Road.

When the knitting and crochet needles start a’clicking in Powhatan on the _____ of every month, it isn’t long before the talk starts fl owing.

Hour after hour, skein after skein of yarn, the women of Kay’s Crafters catch up on eachother’s lives as they create hand-made items for those in need.

Kay’s Crafters, founded by Pow-hatan resident Kay Berrey, is part of a larger Henrico-based group, From the Heart.

For the past ten years, the non-profi t

organization has created handcrafted hats, scarves and blankets to help keep others warm throughout the winter season and beyond.

“We’ve donated nearly 90,000 items to various organizations,” said Lois Moore, founder of From the Heart. “The majority of the items have been for chemotherapy and radiation patients to use during their infusion treatments. The hats and scarves keep them warm when they’ve lost their hair. We also donate bears and blankets to children in burn units who are in pediatric emergency rooms in hospitals and make baby blankets for the NICU and burial outfi ts for those who don’t survive.”

From the Heart also crafts outfi ts for teddy bears given to hospices and dialysis centers, sweaters for veterans at Hunter Holmes McGuire Medical Center, blankets for area nursing

homes, and mittens and sleeping bags for the homeless. The group even provides padding for animal shelters.

An active grandmother of two, Moore was inspired to knit after seeing a group of fi fth graders who were knitting squares into blankets for homeless kids through a national project called “Warm Up America.”

“So I went on the Internet and a lady at a yarn shop in California taught me how to knit online. I started making hats and thought, ‘What can I do with these?’”

Moore turned on the television to catch the end of a broadcast interview with a young lady at Hawthorne House, a cancer resource center at Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital on the Johnston-Willis campus of CJW Medical Center. “They were doing an

interview with a young girl who was wearing a terrible hat and I thought I could make better looking hats.”

In the spring of that year, Moore began volunteering with the Massey Cancer Center and started teaching caregivers and patients how to knit. “Unknow-ingly to me, a nurse had placed an ad asking for volunteer knitters and had given out my telephone number. At fi rst, I wasn’t keeping track, then I began noting who was calling and why,” Moore said.

“Soon, people would drop off things they had made and bringing by donated yarn. It started coming in faster than what I could handle as one person. It just grew. It’s amazing what has happened. Later, in 2005, we incorporated and became a non-profi t.”

Today, From the Heart has nearly 1,000 mem-bers who are picking up their knitting needles and crochet hooks for good causes. The women, and a few men, work with hospitals to stitch caps for pre-mature babies and make blankets for pediatric cancer patients. The organization buys undressed teddy bears and makes outfi ts for them. The yarn or fabric is donated and, occasion-ally, they receive mon-etary donations, which allow them to buy materialsm, including needles.

“A lot of the ladies

who are doing this are retired,” Moore said. “What we do benefi ts the folks who receive the item as much as it does the knitter who makes the items.”

Based in Henrico County, From the Heart’s committees inventory, sort, stitch and assemble projects in a facility that houses the donated yarn, supplies and ongoing projects. The organiza-tion’s 1,200-square-foot shop, donated by Wilson Properties, resembles a home environment with chairs and rockers set up in a relaxing atmosphere. The group of 20 mem-bers donated more than 3,500 items to local individuals in need.

“We don’t tell people what to make. It’s whatever anybody is

interested in creating,” Moore said. “The fi ngers are going as fast as they can to keep up with the need out there. We can fi nd a home for anything anybody makes.

“There’s such a big need that we can use anything that we can get. We’ll probably hit 100,000 [mark] in the summer.”

From the Heart instructors will teach a person to knit or crochet at no charge.

They are also willing to supply the yarn, needles and hooks for volunteers.

to invest in infrastruc-ture improvements to the county’s fi re stations, so that when the time comes to hire profes-sionals - volunteers currently fi ll the ranks - Powhatan won’t have to handle both expenses at once, he said.

Bucher also suggest-ed the county start purchasing land for future fi re stations.

Planning Director Brandon Stidham asked supervisors to consider hiring a fi nancial consultant to analyze the county’s cash proffer system – it doesn’t currently take into account transportation concerns. Stidham also suggested the county hire a mid-level staff member to handle

transportation issues. “It’s a wonderful

idea,” said Supervisor Robert Cosby, “but I don’t see us doing that at this time.”

The requests stem from the loss of VDOT services localities have experienced since the department reorganized, Stidham said.

Said Cosby, “When we do these things it looks like we’re giving up. Hang tight, we have to have some help.” He said localities can’t be expected to pick up the expense for road mainte-nance.

But “the handwriting is on the wall,” said Supervisor Carson Tucker. Tucker said the General Assembly “seems to be inevitably” shifting the responsibil-ity for transportation

improvements onto localities.

“They’re getting out of the funding business but staying in the government business,” one supervisor said of the commonwealth.

The schools ended the retreat by presenting budget information that came as a pleasant surprise to some super-visors, despite revenue forecasts that place next year’s school funding at roughly $4 million below 2007 levels.

“The numbers look much better than I expected to see,” said Tucker.

“I hope it holds,” replied Superintendent Dr. Margaret S. Meara. She said the challenge is to maintain the quality of the education system with shrinking dollars.

Mays: Real estate agent had front-row seat for county’s boom

By around 1985, Mays recalls, Powhatan began to shed it reputa-tion as a far-fl ung outpost. Families began to fl ock to the county, buying up land and snapping up homes.

In Mays’ retelling of her early days in real estate, if you listen, you can hear the faintest rumble of trouble approaching, of a housing market that was already headed for trouble.

“So many people wanted to be in Pow-hatan in those days,” she recalls of the mid 1980s, when the county’s population began to skyrocket. “Whatever they could qualify for, they would pay.”

Mays remembers working with couples

looking to buy, gently explaining why the lavish home they wanted wasn’t a possibility on their income

Still, for those who wanted and could afford a home, Mays soon became one of the most popular agents around.

Mays says her popularity may have stemmed from the fact that she was born in the country– albeit the backwoods of Kentucky, not Virginia – and seemed to understand what her rural clientele needed.

“I think I was more like the Powhatan people,” she says, remembering the con-nections she was able to make back then. “I think they just considered me part of the family.”

* * *

If Mays seems usually grounded for someone living in a “buy it up, use it up, get a better one” kind of world, perhaps that’s because of where – and how – she grew up.

One of 10 children, Mays was born in a two-bedroom log cabin without electricity or running water. Though she remembers her early childhood as an idyllic time, the family had little in the way of money or material comforts.

After the death of her mother when Mays was 11 (her father had been killed in an accident when she was six) Mays was adopted by a family in Ohio, where she would remain until she graduated from high school.

When her fi rst marriage ended, she and her young son moved to

Richmond to live with her sister.

With a tremendous work ethic, she went after her real estate license, then her broker’s certifi cation.

The rest, as they say, is Powhatan house-hunting history.

Despite her consider-able success, Dot Mays still lives in the same modest home she and her husband, Tom, purchased in the 1970s.

Sure there have been plenty of people pushing her to upgrade, but Mays tends to stick to the logic she learned growing up.

“A house isn’t anything,” she likes to say. “A house is just materials. A home is peace and love and joy. You can have a big house and it’s [value is] in your head. Joy in your heart is what makes a home.”

The Powhatan Chamber of Commerce’s Dan Jones (left) is congratulated by Supervisor Bob Cosby after being named winner of the Kathy Budner award during last Thursday’s annual Chamber dinner at The Mill at Fine Creek. For more photos, visit www.powhatantoday.com.

The beginning of the year is a time when we look for ways

we can improve our health for the coming year, shed a few

unwanted pounds and get in shape. Have you ever thought about the New Year as a time to take stock of your fi nancial health? Do you need to shed some unwanted fi nancial bumps and budget bulges? If the economic downturn is adding stress to your life, you may be due for an annual check up to assess

your fi nancial fi tness and be more fi scally fi t. Doctors encourage you to “know” your numbers; blood

pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. But do you know your “fi nancial numbers”?

Financial problems can put a terrible strain on individuals and families. Many people fi nd themselves squeezed from both sides – facing reduced income and rising prices. While you may not have control over the economy, you do have some control over your money.

Financial manage-ment can seem com-plicated, but sound money practices really boil down to simple good habits that can make a difference between being fi nan-cially fi t or fl abby. Use the following seven steps to improve your fi nancial fi tness.

1. Weigh in by determining your income and expenses.

Track your expenses, this helps you gain control over your mon-ey.

2. Make a Spend-ing Plan (Budget): Subtract your expenses from your income, the goal should be to have more income than expenses. According to the National Asso-ciation of Certifi ed Public Accountants, in 2009 the average American spent $1.22 for every dollar earned.

3. Set fi nancial goals: An important part of setting goals is knowing how long it will take to achieve them. Set short term, intermediate and long term goals.

4. Prioritize: Once your have tracked your spending you can better determine your needs versus your wants. Develop a routine of examining

buying decisions.5. Trim the fat: Cut

out budget busters and reduce expenses.

6. Diet: Freeze your credit card and create a debt elimination calendar.

7. Save: Make an emergency fund and only use it for emer-gencies. Having it will prevent you from borrowing money or charging on a high-interest credit card in the event of an emer-gency.

If you would like to improve your fi nancial health, the Powhatan Extension Offi ce is offering a free two-part fi nancial class called “Create a Secure Financial Future”. The fi rst in the series is “Strategies for Elimi-nating Debt” and is offered in partnership with Virginia Credit Union. This class will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1 in the Village Building conference room.

The class will be held twice on Feb. 1 – during the day from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and a second session in the evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This hands-on class will provide you with an opportu-nity to learn strategies for reducing and eliminating debt.

The second class is called “Managing Your Money.” This class will be held twice on Tuesday, March 1. The day session takes place from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The evening session runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This hands-on class will help you create an individual or family budget, set fi nancial goals, show you how to track spending, and get a free credit report.

The Powhatan Village Building is located at 3910 Old Buckingham Road.

To register or for information, contact Arla Halpin, Family and Consumer Science Program Associate at the Powhatan County Extension Offi ce, at 598-5640 or email [email protected].

perhaps the closest thing Powhatan County has to a Professor Emeritus of Real Estate, the best thing you can do may be to look down at her feet.

In a world where her competitors have often favored fl ashy automobiles and high-end clothing, Mays, ___ , has always maintained a penchant for used cars and comfortable shoes.

“Why would I want to wear heels and hose if I’m going to be out in the middle of a fi eld somewhere?” she asked plaintively last week, pointing to the spotless black walking shoes she typi-cally pairs with a neat pair of jeans and a

sweater. She says she has always felt very much the same way about

homes, urging those desperate to buy the biggest house they could get their hands on to stay within their means, focusing instead on the things that actually make a house a home.

Mays, who closed her Powhatan real estate company at the end of last year, may just be the best role model around to offer young people—or not-so-young people — a few lessons in fi nancial responsibility.

She has seen several recessions over the course of her career, and seen plenty of people overextend themselves only to end up losing much of what they had.

Many of them, noticing that Mays’ habit of living within her means has helped her weather the storm, tell her these days that they wish they were in her shoes.

It would appear to be an apt statement. After all, Mays’ shoes may be the perfect metaphor for her life: They are comfortable, unfussy and perfectly Powhatan.

And that suits her just fi ne.

NOTES FROM THE CAPITOL

Resolution will honor a true Powhatan iconBy Del. Lee WareR - 65th District

Though the focus in Rich-mond has turned this fi rst full week of General Assembly to the some 2,000 bills making their way into committees, we were able to act on a number of non-controversial resolutions, including, I am pleased to report, House Joint Resolution 544, of which I am patron, “Celebrating the Life of Elwood Floyd Yates.”

Senator John Watkins of Powhatan is patron of the same Resolution in the Senate.

When one reads the accom-plishments of “The Gentleman from Powhatan,” who was among my esteemed predeces-sors in the House of Delegates, there remains nothing for me to add--except that, always it will remain one of the distinctive pleasures of my life to have known, and to have reciprocated the friendship of, one of the most remarkable citizens in the long history of our county and community. The text of the Resolution follows:

WHEREAS, the achievement of virtue in private and profes-sional life is the surest indication of the prospect of exemplary service as a custodian of the public wealth; and

WHEREAS, the Founders of the American Republic, who were fi rst the Founders of the Commonwealth of Virginia,

from their survey of the annals of history, asserted that the individual grounded in the self-governing life of farm, commu-nity, and county is the exemplar of the citizen of a free state and country; and

WHEREAS, the agrarian counties of Virginia have for centuries been notable for engendering citizens who have arisen to embody the singular qualities of the traditional Virginian in the government of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates, a native of Charles City County, embodied these ancient characteristics of the Virginian as a citizen and also, for many decades, as The Elder Statesman of his adopted county of Pow-hatan; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates died at 107 years of age, surrounded by his family, on August 31, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates was the last surviving of the nine children of Joseph Charles and Elia Avery Yates of Charles City, and was prede-ceased also by his wife of 69 years, Mary Bowles Yates; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates moved to Powhatan in his twenties, and went on to manage and/or to operate a Ford automo-bile dealership, an oil company, a farm, the Bank of Powhatan, a

MY POINT OF VIEW

Bill would block names on databasesBy Ken OdorMedia General News Service

State Senator Steve Martin (11th District/Chester-

fi eld) has introduced Sen-ate Bill No. 812 in this session of the General Assembly which would prohibit posting of names of employees along with salaries obtained through the Freedom of Informa-tion Act.

Is this a good idea?Is it appropriate for newspa-

pers to post a database of public employees’ salaries along with the names of those holding the jobs?

Or is it an unnecessary inva-sion of privacy?

The Powhatan Today’s salary database of county employees caused some concern when posted last year. A few county employees contacted the newspa-per and complained.

The Powhatan Today did not budge.

Nor should it have. For years the salaries of high-

ranking offi cials at all levels of government have been made public.

We can fi nd out how much the President earns and Senators and Congressmen.

What’s the difference for any other public employee?

None, as far as this writer can see.

Going to work for the taxpay-er is NOT the same as going to work for a private employer. Taxpayers pay the freight for

public employees and they should be able to fi nd out how much they are paying and who is getting it.

In fact, one might compare the taxpayer to the CEO of a corpo-ration. The CEO knows how much his or her employees earn. Likewise the taxpayers as a group are really the CEO of each governmental entity.

But, one might argue, all public employees have supervi-sors who check their perfor-mance and of course we have elected bodies that pass ordi-nances setting pay scales, right?

Won’t they make sure every-thing stays ship shape?

Won’t they make sure the taxpayers’ money is spent wisely?

Of course we expect that public executives and managers will act responsibly when struc-turing the salaries of the public work force.

But guess what? They too work for the taxpay-

er, merely acting as agents of the taxpayer CEO.

It as simple as that.At every level government

employees should remember that, in one form or another, they work for the taxpayer.

And although they may have a supervisor who reports to a higher supervisor who reports to the highest authority in whatever public entity is involved, they all serve at the pleasure of the taxpayer CEO.

That makes it altogether right and proper for the pay of public employees to be public knowl-edge.

Ken Odor writes for the Goochland Gazette.

telephone service, three sawmills, and, at one time, even the fl eet of buses for Powhatan Schools; and

WHEREAS, through these and numerous other business and civic endeavors, Elwood Floyd Yates earned the devotion of his fellow Powhatani-ans, who, together with the citizens of Chester-fi eld and Colonial Heights, elected him to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1939 to 1952; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates served with distinction, too, as chairman of the Selective Service Board of Pow-hatan during World War II and also, later, as chairman of the Demo-cratic Party of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates served also as chairman of ... the Virginia Conservation and Economic Develop-ment Board, and in these positions was instrumen-tal in advancing numer-ous conservation projects in the Commonwealth, such as saving from extinction the Wild Turkey of Virginia and protecting woodlands...and

WHEREAS, the General Assembly in 2003 recognized Elwood Floyd Yates’s enduring contributions to conserva-tion in the Common-wealth by declaring that

the planned Powhatan State Park would repre-sent a memorial of his singular achievements; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates was the oldest active member of the Lions Club in the entire world and also the longest-serving Mason in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates is survived by his son, Elwood Floyd Yates, Jr., and wife, Vickie; four grandchil-dren, seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchil-dren; and

WHEREAS, Elwood Floyd Yates was buried beside his wife in the Powhatan Community Cemetery located on land that he and a friend donated to the county in 1936; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the members of the body mourn the passing of a former Member of the House who embodied the fi nest virtues of the Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FUR-THER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presenta-tion to Elwood Floyd Yates, Jr., and his family, as a token of the esteem in which the members of the General Assembly hold the memory of The Gentleman from Pow-hatan, Elwood Floyd Yates.

JV Indians still rollingBy Richard CarrierContributing Writer

Coming off of an undefeated season in 2009-10, the Powhatan High School girls junior varsity basketball squad is well on the way to duplicating that feat again this season.

There is something different about these junior Lady Indians: a new coach.

Shell Daniels guided the team the past two seasons, but his elevation to the girls varsity created a coaching vacancy, which was quickly fi lled by Brandon Burley.

Still, Powhatan has charged through its fi rst eight games without a blemish on their record – and the beat goes on.

It is the mantra of every successful coach that teamwork is one of the Golden Keys to Victory, so it is no surprise when Coach Burley claims these as the greatest attributes of the current squad. However, even a cursory examination of the 2010-11 junior Lady Indians reveals the truth in this statement.

The seven sophomores and four freshmen

Warriors topple KnightsBy Richard CarrierContributing Writer

Tidewater Academy’s Mike Greene slashed through the lane, fl ashed along the base-line and sprinted down-court for 29 of the visiting Warriors’ 54 points.

Blessed Sacrament Hugue-not’s boys basketball team couldn’t contain Greene and the offensive weapon they relied on to counteract him, the three-point shot, deserted them. However, the Knights hung tough with the defending state champion Warriors for almost four quarters – trailing by just three points with 1:22 left – before free throws and a Greene layup iced a 54-45 victory last Friday.

John Moore returned from an ankle injury to lead BSH with 13 points. Chris O’Hara, Trevor Gilliam and Deon Watts added eight apiece.

Leading 12-8, the Knights opened the second quarter by missing their fi rst seven fi eld goal attempts and Tidewater tied the score with 6:28 left in the fi rst half. With Greene contributing seven points in the run, the Warriors stretched out to a 18-12 lead. BSH’s fourth three-pointer, a Gilliam pull-up, drew the Knights within one at 21-20, but Hunter Haywood’s stickback gave Tidewater a 26-22 halftime lead.

The Knights snatched the lead back at 27-26 early in the third quarter on O’Hara’s put-back and Moore’s three. The BSH squad failed on their next 13 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Knights shot 5 for 20 from three-point range. Their commitment to the long-ball kept them off of the free throw

Chemistry isn’t just a cliche for PHS girlsBy Richard CarrierContributing Writer

The jargon generated by sports generally ticks me off. It insults my somewhat limited intelligence when someone offers to “give one hundred and ten percent.” Or

that “step-ping up” is an unex-pected effort by a player.

How-ever, there

is one of these trite phrases which I am now fi rmly convinced has real meat on its metaphorical bones: team chemistry.

The lack of it is the only explanation I can think of to explain the recent free-fall of Powhatan High School’s girls basketball team.

Going into the season, Coach Paulette Bowman agreed that, on paper, the 2010-11 Lady Indians were potentially one of the best she would put on the court over the course of her 22 years of coaching at Pow-hatan.

The girls had height in 6-1 senior Hana Davis and Maitlin Ware, as well as experience and leadershipfrom the six seniors.

“We have the most experience we’ve had in long time,” Bowman said.

The Indians’ other strongest assets?

Toughness: Jesse Harris and Alexis Flippen are pine-knot hard warriors in the paint.

Versatility: Hannah Livermon and Marisha Berry were interchangeable parts in the backcourt.

Balanced scoring: Davis would be counted on for post points, but Livermon and Berry could produce from outside or inside, with Berry a threat to score from anywhere on the fl oor. Harris, Ware, Cady Shelton and Britney Berry – another tall post player – would contribute to the team balance at both ends of the court.

Through four season-opening contests, the Indi-ans’ curriculum vitae proved to be authentic. Then the wheels came off. The Powhatan girls lost three games in succession, each by more than 20 points – they were blown out, including once on their home court.

The only difference? The absence of Livermon.

Due to an injury, the junior started the season slowly and produced respect-able, but certainly not outstanding numbers: 9 points and 7 assists per game. But it was another injury to Livermon that

take the court in waves, with any possible combination of players likely to be on the court at any given time. They can, and do, score from any area on the court, being just as likely to drive the baseline, fi re in turn-arounds from the foul line or pilfer and fl y down-court to score.

Offensive sets are executed “on ball movement and sharp, precise passing. Moving the ball, making the extra pass [the ball is seldom dribbled in these sets and passes don’t touch the fl oor either] and fi nding the open shooter,” Burley said.

Once located, that open shooter might launch a quick set-shot, drive to the hoop or drive and pull up for a runner. The three-point shot is in the junior Lady Indians arsenal, but is seldom needed, so seldom used.

Although the girls’ offense is precision beauty, Coach Burley insists that defense is his focus – something his team works on every day.

seemed to send the Lady Indians into an immedi-ate plunge.

Frustrated at a level I have never seen in her, Bowman was unable to fi gure out how the loss of one player could have such dramatic conse-quences for an entire basketball team.

“She was important,” Bowman acknowledged before adding that Livermon was “only one lug nut on that wheel. When only one lug nut is loose, the whole wheel doesn’t fall off.”

In this instance it has. Hopefully this is a

temporary thing, but in the last game I saw the Powhatan girls play (at home against Greens-ville), they lost by 26 and generated only 19 points – certainly no improvement over their previous losses.

Again, in Coach Bowman’s perspective the loss of Livermon cannot account for what she sees as a 30-point-plus differential: the 20-plus-point losses against Livermon’s nine-point scoring average. And it’s diffi cult to see how she’s wrong.

So where did those points go?

The leadership is still there. Sophomore Marisha Berry ran the team from the point last year (Livermon was injured) and did a fantastic job, both in distributing and scoring.

Against Greensville,

Berry had just one assist and two points.

Harris and Flippen are still pulling down rebounds and diving on the fl oor for loose balls, but also missing too many point-blank shots.

Davis was a non-factor in the Greensville game with only two points, as the smaller Eagles smothered her in the paint and dared the Powhatan guards to shoot over them. It wasn’t a question of the Powhatan girls not making those shots; they simply didn’t attempt them.

It’s not as if the girls aren’t trying. They are playing hard, but they’re missing a ton of easy shots. The mystery still is that this is the same group of girls who won more of their share of games last year, without Livermon.

What’s different? What’s missing?

It’s obviously not a question of building or rebuilding the program. The assets are all there. The issue is how to best blend those assets. They call that team chemistry.

The very talented Lady Indians will – hopefully sooner rather than later – fi nd the secret to reestablishing dominance.

They’ll fi nd it when they understand and embrace the fact that it was there all along.

Livermon just helped take it up a notch or two.

Powhatan’s Kaleigh Amorese goes for a steal.

“We practice defense, and we practice it a lot,” he added.

Burley keeps no records for a leading scorers or rebounders. There is no designated team leader.

“On different night anyone can step up. It’s just a big team concept with us.”

Asked to provide a one-sentence thumb-nail for each of his girls, Burley insisted on abbreviating those descriptions to one-word. As he clicked off the team-members, every girl’s outstanding characteristic became one of two words: quick or hustler. When you see these girls in action, his analysis is tough to contradict.

Sophomore Jen Balcom – quick; sopho-more Rachael Byrd –

hustler nonstop; sopho-more Rachael Shiffl ett – quick; sophomore Chelsea Edwards – hustler, goes all out; sophomore Grace Frehan –hustler; sopho-more Micah Kingston – hustler, determined, gets after it; sophomore transfer Kate Long – hustler; freshman Kaleigh Amorese – quick; freshman Ryan Kirtner – hustler; fresh-man Allison Etheridge –hustler, a go getter; and freshman Addie Johnson – hustler, go getter.

All of the sophomores except Long played on last year’s undefeated squad. That experience, and the success that came with it, has cer-tainly provided a solid base for skill develop-ment. Fundamentals, for almost all of these girls, have been taught to them in the exceptionally strong junior high school

program.But the 2010-11

junior Lady Indians are not resting on their previ-ous achievements – and they won’t be allowed to.

“We must continue to

improve every time we take the court,” Burley said. “We must have the desire to improve every day. Everyone on this team has that desire. I know it.”

line, where they were just 2-for-3 for the game.

Still, Blessed Sacra-ment trailed by only fi ve points (40-35) heading into the fourth quarter.

Greene opened the fi nal stanza with a tip in, Gilliam earned two on a goaltending call and then had that overruled.

BSH gave up the baseline again, this time to Josh Clarke and the Warriors led by seven. Moore got two back on

Continued from page 1B foul-shots and Brandon Holt slipped in a short jump-shot. Ethan Sill, who was a beast on the boards with a game-high 14 rebounds, stuffed back an offensive rebound and with 2:46 left, the Knights were down by a single point.

Tidewater turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions, but Blessed Sacrament couldn’t fi nd the hole in the iron.

With 2:14 remaining, the Warriors went into a

stall, forcing the Knights out of their zone defense. But Yerby turned the ball over, giving the home team another chance to take the lead.

Moore failed to convert on a hard drive to the hoop and Tidewa-ter stalled again. Smoth-ering Greene left Lamont Moore open and he took two defenders to the rim, scored and converted the free-throw. With 1:15 left Tidewater led 49-45.

John Moore missed on a three-ball, but

Yerby’s travel gave the ball back to BSH. Again, Moore fi red up his normally lethal three. He missed badly.

Forced to foul, the Knights sent Lamont Moore to the free-throw line for a one-and-one opportunity. He made both.

After Gilliam mis-fi red, Greene snatched the rebound and, avoid-ing attempts to foul him, streaked the length of the court for a layup that made it 53-45.

PHS boys JV falls to Southampton onlast-second shot

Powhatan High’s boys junior varsity basketball team took early control of their Wednesday night contest against Southampton, posting an early 10-point lead, but the visiting Indians rallied in the fourth quarter to claim a 35-34 win.

Drew Ratliff’s feed earned Chase Tucker the game’s fi rst points and Ben Gerow stole to score. Tyler Amorese’s three-point play, Marcel Providence’s lay-up and Ratliff’s three-pointer off of an in-bounds play ended the fi rst quarter at 14-7 PHS.

Zach Dawson opened the second period with a three-ball to give the junior Indians that ten-point lead. Southampton turned up the defensive pressure and became very aggressive in driving to the bucket; piling up Powhatan fouls while scoring 12 second-quarter points at the foul line,

one three-pointer and a base-line drive. The gap closed to 23-19 at the half.

Each team scored seven points in the third period and Junius McFar-land’s drive put PHS up by six at the start of the fi nal period. But the Indians went cold and visitors pulled to within one at the 2:14 mark.

Tucker’s basket gave PHS a three-point lead with 1:48 left in the game, but Southampton made both ends of a one-and-one – the visitors were in the bonus from the 4:40 mark, but missed seven consecutive free throws and squandered an opportunity to take control early in the fi nal quarter.

With Powhatan clinging to its one-point lead, a questionable no-call saw Southampton get a steal and run-out for the winning bucket with seven seconds left.

Powhatan showed balanced scoring, putting eight players in the score-book. Tucker led with eight, Amorese, Ratliff and Dawson each contributed fi ve. Both Providence and Tucker did good work on the boards.

PHS girls JV builds huge lead, crushes visiting Southampton

It was surgical, a precision disman-tling by the Powhatan High School girls JV basketball squad last Wednes-day evening.

The junior Lady Indians led 16-0 at the end of the fi rst quarter while Southampton did not manage a point until the 5:24 mark of the second quarter. Powhatan put nine players in the scorebook on the way to a 47-9 pummeling of the Courtland squad.

Addie Johnson’s put-back opened the scoring and combined with Jen Balcom, Kaleigh Amorese and Rachael Shiffl ett for the 16-0 lead.

Coach Brandon Burley sent in a second wave of Indians and Allison Etheridge scored on a slick turn-around.

Micah Kingston grabbed a rebound and wove her way through the entire Southampton defense for a lay-up,

then Rachael Byrd converted Amorese’s assist to give the PHS girls a 29-3 halftime lead.

Southampton opened the second half with more on-ball pressure and the junior Indians collected only six points in the quarter. Southampton scored four.

Kingston’s put-back, Amoresse’s lay-up and Shiffl ett’s bucket put six points on the board in the fi rst two minutes, as the Powhatan girls posted a 10-2 fi nal quarter.

Balcolm and Kingston led the scor-ing with nine and Ammorse added eight .

The junior Indians showed an amazing offensive arsenal; scoring on medium range set-shots, drives to the hoop, turn-arounds in the paint, follows, break-aways and from the foul line.

They did not attempt a single three-pointer. Their no-dribble, pin-point passing around the Southamp-ton zone constantly found open shooters.

Local Residents in Amazement YesterdayAs Collectors Provide A

Stimulus Package to Richmond!By KEN MCINTOSH

STAFF WRITER

ICCA will be placing ads in newspapers,

radio and running television spots this

week asking people to bring in any old

silver and gold coins made before 1965.

Those that do bring in their coins will

be able to speak with collectors one on

one and have their coins looked at with

an expert set of eyes. With the help of

these ICCA members offers will be made

to those that have coins made before

1965. Offers will be made based on silver

or gold content and the rarity of the

coins. All coins made before 1965 will be

examined and purchased including gold

coins, silver coins, silver dollars, all types

of nickels and pennies, Those that decide

to sell their coins will be paid on the spot.

If you are like a lot of people you might

have a few old coins or even a coffee

can full lying around. If you have ever

wondered what they are worth, now might

be your chance to find out and even sell

them if you choose. They could be worth

a lot according to the International Coin

Collectors Association also known as ICCA.

Collectors will pay a fortune for some

coins and currency for their collections. If

they are rare enough, one coin could be

worth over $100,000 according to Eric

Helms coin collector and ICCA member.

One ultra rare dime an 1894S Barber sold

for a record $1.9 million to a collector

in July of 2007. While that is an extreme

example, many rare and valuable coins

are stashed away in dresser drawers or

lock boxes around the country. The ICCA

and its collector members have organized

a traveling event in search of all types

of coins and currency. “Even common

coins can be worth a significant amount

due to the high price of silver and gold,”

says Helms. Washington quarters and

Roosevelt dimes and worth many times

their face value. Recent silver markets have

driven the price up on even common coins

made of silver. Helms explains: all half

dollars, quarter and dimes made before

1965 contain 90% silver and are sought

after any time silver prices rise. Right now

it’s a sellers market he said.

The rarest coins these collectors are

looking for include $20, $10, $5 and

$2 1/2 gold coins and any coin made

before 1850. These coins always bring

big premiums according to the ICCA.

Silver dollars are also very sought after

nowadays.

So whether you have one coin you think

might be valuable or a large collection

you recently inherited you can talk to

these collectors for free and if your lucky

you may have a rarity worth thousands.

Either way, there is nothing to lose and it

sounds like fun!

event visit the ICCA website at
