Transform anylampshade into astylish container.

1. Place a shade of yourchoice on a work surface withthe larger rim facing up. If theshade has a bulb clip, flattenthe wire as much as possible.2. To embellish the shade, paint a simple design with the color of your choice. Allow to dry.3. Lay the shade’s smallerrim on a 3⁄4-inch-thick foampanel (#15350), and tracearound the rim with a pencil.Using a utility knife, carefullycut 1⁄4 inch inside the tracedline. To reinforce the foam, cover the entire foam circlewith masking tape. (Use leftover foam for multipleprojects, or for protectingstored valuables.)4. Gently press the foamcircle into the shade toform a base. Becausethe lampshade is not waterproof, you willneed to use a vase inside the container tohold fresh-cut flowersfor a festive floral display(as shown here). You also canuse this container to storelightweight items.

Put stemware on display.

1 . Cut an 111⁄2- x 48-inch stair tread (found in the lumber department) into two24-inch-long pieces; a Lowe’semployee can cut the boardfor you. (Use the second pieceto create another stemwaredisplay, or save it for a futureproject.) Prime the board, and apply two coats of paint(we used Valspar SignatureColors, Laura Ashley Home,Inlet Blue #LA1215, flat), allowing each coat to dry.2 . Prime two metal brackets(#156065) with metal primer, and paint them to match theboard, letting each coat dry.3 . Place two under-cabinetstemware racks (#210024)

end to end, centered on theunderside of the board (asshown). With a pencil, markthe locations for pilot holes.Lay the racks aside, and drillthe pilot holes with a 1⁄8-inchbit. Attach the racks using thehardware provided.4 . Measure and mark theplacement of the brackets on the wall—over studs if possible or using hollow-wallanchors if in drywall. Using#8 x 11⁄4-inch screws, hangeach bracket, and then securethe board to the brackets.

STEP-BY-STEPStep 1: Use anvil pruners to

trim off the ends of each

48-inch round dowel, and

then cut the dowel into

nine 31⁄2-inch pieces for

each coaster. Cut each

36-inch square dowel into

12 pieces for each coaster.

Step 2: Add a light coat

of paint or stain to each

dowel piece. (Use gloves

when working with stain.)

Lay the pieces on a drop

cloth to dry. The pieces

should be dry to the touch

in about 20 minutes. If

working indoors, direct

a fan on the pieces to

reduce drying time.

Step 3: Cut two 3-foot-long

pieces of twine or wire

for each coaster. Group

together nine round dowel

pieces (or 12 of the square

dowel pieces) to form a

square. Tie the twine or

wire around the first dowel

piece, and then loop the

remainder around each

piece to secure them

together. Tie off and cut

the excess when you

reach the end. Repeat to

secure the opposite end

of the coaster. Hostess Tip:

Give each guest a jar of

polyurethane for adding

a protective finish to the

coasters later.

▲ Use teaching toolsTo separate the recyclables,

the homeowners added a

durable, easy-to-clean 12-bin

organizer (#226794) and

arranged the bins by color

and category. For example,

the red bins are for plastic

and the blue bins are for

cardboard. The color-coded

system helps teach children

which items are recyclable

and how to group the items

for their community’s

recycling process. The

parents consolidate their

recyclables into larger bins

provided by the city. The

bins are kept in the garage

and transported to the

street for curbside collection

once a week.

Chart your progressThe homeowners created a

simple interactive chart to track

each family member’s weekly

contributions. To make your

own, simply select a piece of 1⁄4-inch-thick plywood, and cut

it to the desired size. (A Lowe’s

employee can cut the board

for you.) Apply three coats of

magnetic primer (#115535), and

allow to dry. Next, sketch a grid

large enough for your family,

and paint each column a different

color. Let dry. Write family names

and days of the week on the

board using a permanent marker

or paint pen. Attach picture

hangers (#52716) to the back

of the board, and hang. Use

magnets on the board to show

each person’s progress.

Choose recycledThe items you recycle today might end up in the products you buy tomorrow for your next home or

garden project. Keep an eye out for these eco-friendly products at Lowe’s.

■ FLOR carpet tiles (shown at left)Many of the carpet designs are madefrom recycled or renewable resources. And you can replace one or two

of these versatile tiles instead of replacing the entire floor or rug.

■ DuPont Garden Products

Long-Lasting Rubber Mulch Using recycledrubber from sources such as old tires, this innovative mulch provides superior coverage and is guaranteed for 12 years.

■ ChoiceDek composite decking Theengineered components are composedof recovered wood fiber and recycledplastics, and the decking does not requirechemical dipping or water sealing.

PitchingIn

Make recycling a household priority by incorporating specialized storage.

Being good stewards of the Earth’s resourcesis important to this family—they collectplastic, paper, aluminum, and glass for theircommunity’s curbside recycling program. But they needed a place to store the itemsbefore the weekly pickup. Luckily, an emptyspace in their kitchen pantry offered just the spot for this worthwhile practice. And thepantry doors conceal the storage centerfrom the rest of the kitchen.

his family’s shared second home is alwaysbustling—and at times, busting at the seams—with children and grandchildren. In order to accommodate their growing family, they

decided to expand the outdoor living space. The new covered, screened-in pavilion is the perfect spot for

the family to enjoy the fresh air and view of the lake while stayingwarm during cool nights. A Cultured Stone fireplace and a convenient kitchenette make the area cozy as well as functional.A sliding screen door connects the pavilion to the new deck.Outside, a large built-in gas grill provides ample space for

cooking burgers and veggies for the entire family. A small lower deck offers a landing for folks headed

down to the water. Here, parents can watch their kidsswim or simply enjoy a relaxing, quiet moment closer to the lake.

To tie together the look of the new outdoor entertainingarea, Cultured Stone was chosen for the outside deck aswell as the pavilion fireplace. “It has a great feel that’srustic and sturdy,” one family member says. “It’s perfect for a house at the lake.”

Throughout the space, a warm color palette of green, gold, and brown is classicand mimics nature. Even accessories, such as lantern-style outdoor light fixtures, contribute to the homespunfeel. True to the homeowners’original intentions, the newspace lovingly brings togethermany generations of this large family.

Three generations enjoyweekends and holidays attheir family lake house.

BEFORE

THE CHALLENGE: These homeowners needed more spacefor outdoor entertaining. The existing deck had weatheredpoorly over the years, and an outdoor shed was not family-friendly. They also wanted better access from thehouse down to the lake.

THE SOLUTION: The family replaced the old deck with anattractive and long-lasting composite material. They alsotore down the shed and, in its place, built a covered,screened-in pavilion with a kitchenette. Stairs and a smalllower deck provide a smooth transition to the lake.

WHAT THEY DID

“Being at the lake house is all about being outsideand being with family .”

Good To KnowThe board-and-batten used

on this ceiling has an authentic cabin feel.

To get the same look at less cost, try beaded-

board paneling.

Inside the pavilion, the concretefloor was scored and thenstained with two rich tones, gold and brown, to mimic theCultured Stone fireplace.

1 The kitchenette allows for small-scale cooking and meal

preparation. Built-in cabinetry and open shelving provide plenty of storage space. A galvanized light fixture above the sink illuminates the task areas. 2 Outdoor furniture, featuring all-weather wicker and a shatter-resistant tempered-glass top, holds up well indoors and out. 3 The stainless steel sink—with a tall, curved faucet to allow room for large pots—is surrounded by a durable granite countertop. A ceramic tile backsplash covers the wall behind it. 4 Rustic-style outdoor lanterns withseeded-glass globes brighten the space and add antique character. 5 The ceiling fan has the same rustic charm as the wall lanterns. A vaulted ceiling allows light to fill the room. 6 Weather-resistant cushions offer comfortable seating.

1 Embellished with ribbons, sheer curtains filter sunlight for a soft, pleasant glow. 2 To create these nightstands, the homeowners mounteddrawers to the wall on eachside of the bed. Then theyaffixed drapery valances usingself-fastening strips.3 Added to a simple storagechest, the wallpaper borderfeatures whimsical fairies.4 The homeowners paintedthe area behind the bed, attached floral appliqués using construction adhesive, and pasted wallpaper cutoutsdirectly to the wall for an artful “headboard.”

Soft pink walls and delicate accents make a girl’s room look pretty

and feminine.

his child’s bedroom needed a fresh look, and when her parents decided to make over the space, they knew exactly what theme to choose. “She is a huge fan of fairyprincesses,” her mother says.

A fondness for fairies inspired the pretty pastel colorpalette, which features pink walls and hints of green and blue that set the stage for a magical scene. To keep theirbudget in check, the homeowners dressed up the room’s existing furnishings with paint, appliqués, and charming accents, such as the fairy-themed wallpaper border. Then they incorporated several storage and organizational solutions, neutral-colored carpet, and accessories with a whimsical look for added personality.

With a bit of creativity, the homeowners designed a fairy-tale space that delights their little princess. “Our daughter tells visitors, ‘You’ve got to see my beautiful newroom!’” her mother says.

prevent such tragedies is to be ready

for them. Follow these guidelines

from the HSC Safety Guide to reduce

injuries caused by fires.

❉ LOWE’S In Your Community . . .

Building Safer CommunitiesLowe’s helps promote fire safety and improve public schools.

Lowe’s has a 60-year history ofworking to improve communities across the country. This commitment was evident last year in Chicago, whereLowe’s volunteers worked with students

and community members to improve18 public schools and 18 neighboringfirehouses. The Lowe’s Charitable andEducational Foundation (LCEF) provideda $120,000 grant to fund this project

in partnership with the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Public Schools.

In September, kids and parents fromthe grantee schools had the opportunityto tour the Home Safety Council’s (HSC)The Great Safety Adventure animatedhome—a traveling exhibit sponsored byLowe’s. The nearly 1,000-square-foothome replica includes a living room, kitchen, bath, bedroom, and backyard. It allows visitors to take an active role in recognizing common safety hazards in homes.

HSC experts provided tours of The Great Safety Adventure to those in attendance at the Lowe’s Chicago-areaBrickyard location, currently the onlystore in the Chicago area. They alsodistributed educational safety kits to theyoung people who visited and to childrenat the participating schools. In addition, curriculum kits were provided to eachof the 18 schools and 18 fire departmentsbenefiting from the LCEF grant.

Keith Fosse, Lowe’s district manager, said that the event was well attendedwith more than 200 children touring. Henoted the event’s promotion in Spanish-language media outlets and the presenceof a bilingual representative from Lowe’sas key factors to the ultimate success of the event.

“This is part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities Lowe’s calls home,”said Larry D. Stone, chairman ofLCEF. “By providing resourcesto public schools, we believewe are not only supporting a cause important to our customers and employees, but we are helping build astronger foundation and brighterfuture for the children who will betomorrow’s employees, homeowners, and community leaders.”
