Page 2: (03) 9395 3533 Boardwalk ... · Ros My: ors Boardwalk School Principal: Carranballac P-9 College is seeking the support of its community to host students from our sister school :

Dear Carranballac College families,

We have had an action packed week this week at the College with:

Year 7 to 9 Athletics sports, Year 5 Goldfields camp heading off, Student ‘Attitudes to School Survey’ being undertaken this week, the Parents and Friends meeting this evening and an Information session for prospective Student School Councillors (Years 7 to 9; accompanied by parents) which took place this evening at 6.30pm in the PAC at Boardwalk.

Further to this we look forward to the Secondary Hobsons Bay Cross Country this Friday. A week of excitement following a busy week of NAPLAN.

Staff have also been fully immersed in a range of professional development activities designed to improve learning opportunities and outcomes for your children, our students. Curriculum design and mapping, robotics and coding, and the Implementation of High Impact Teaching Strategies have been taking place and will continue to do so.

Our College team is committed to improving both student engagement and learning outcomes. We can only achieve this with parent support and strong alignment between families and the College around the school values (Integrity, Respect, Resilience, Responsibility and Inclusiveness).

Whilst I am on the topic of Values there are two that I need to highlight for some parents in our community,

with regard to road and student safety: It is every adults ‘duty of care’ to behave responsibly and with respect on our roads. We have had a number of recent concerns raised about illegal and inappropriate car parking at drop off and pick up times. Concerned parents have raised this matter with me and I have directed them to both the police and the Wyndham City Council. I have also made approaches to both authorities in order to

protect the young in our community. The road system around the College does get heavily congested at critical times during drop-off and pick-up. Our response should be – plan ahead, park a little further away and walk in to collect your child OR arrange for your children (age appropriate) to meet you at your car. There is no excuse for not obeying the simple road and parking rules that are in place to provide safe passage for both children and adults. Parking officers will be in attendance to ensure the rules are adhered to.

The same applies to bike and scooter safety for our students: the wearing of helmets, riding appropriately, consideration for pedestrians, crossing the road and having a bike/scooter roadworthy for use. Please be aware of your responsibility in providing your child with the right advice and equipment for when they ride a bike or scoot a scooter.

Finally I would like to remind all students and families that the College carparks are not for pedestrian use – please use the College walkway entrances and exits at all times for your own safety.

Education is a partnership between parents, students and the College – I am calling on all parents to play their role in supporting the safe passage of students to and from school.

Have a safe fortnight.

Foundation Student Excursion

We are very proud of our Foundation students who demonstrated respectful and responsible behaviour during their recent viewing of the movie Toy Story, in our College Performing Arts Centre. This was a big adventure for our youngest students who were able to learn our college expectations related to excursions in this safe environment.

Year 5 Camp

The first of our Year 5 students departed yesterday for their Goldfields Camp. These tours bring our classroom learning to life. With a focus on the Inquiry topic of “Eureka”, students will be exploring the Victorian goldfield cities of Bendigo and Ballarat from an historic perspective. This authentic learning extends into building the personal development of individual students and increasing their resilience and confidence.

College Representation

Well done to the three secondary students who represented the college on Tuesday of this week at WynSpeak, a public speaking competition run by Rotary. Students present a prepared speech and an impromptu topic. Public speaking takes courage, confidence and builds resilience.

Year 7-9 Athletics Carnival

Well done to all our competitors in our College Year 7- 9 athletics carnival held at Newport Athletics Track on Wednesday. We are proud of those students who gave their best efforts for their Sports House, regardless of the result. We wish those who will be going on to the next competition level in their events all the best.

Student Leaders go from Strength to Strength

Our College student leaders need to be acknowledged as they have a range of significant leadership roles around both schools. There is one group in particular we would like to highlight. Those students who are leading and running the primary and secondary assemblies are doing a brilliant job. Each week the structure and proceedings are becoming stronger. The confidence of our student leaders plays a strong role in this. What a great demonstration of our college value of responsibility.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club at both schools is another demonstration of

responsibility being shown by our students.

Breakfast Club is the ideal warm way to start a cold day.

Our students who regularly arrive at school very early to prepare and cook breakfast

are to be congratulated on

providing this service for our community.

Korean Student Exchange

Congratulations to our students who were part of the inaugural exchange group to Korea. They have been busy presenting details of their tour to their respective assemblies, to a whole staff forum and (with great excitement) to School Council. Your family can join in the excitement of this exchange program by hosting Korean students – please contact our college office for details.

School Council Student Representation

Our students now have another opportunity for developing their leadership skills, as we are calling for nominations from students within our secondary sector to join our College School Council. Details have been provided to all our secondary students.

Winter Uniform

Winter uniform requirements, links to sales, and expectations are listed on our website. Please name all clothing.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge continues. Keep up the reading and keep track of your progress.

Carranballac P-9 College is seeking the support of its community to host students from our sister school Bunsung Middle School.

Students will be visiting in July for 18 days. We are asking families to provide accommodation for 2 students and three meals per day. All members of the household 18 years and over will need to provide evidence of a satisfactory ‘Working With Children Check’.

Families will receive a payment of $250 per student, per week to help cover the costs associated with hosting these students.

If you are unable to host for the full 18 days but may be able to provide partial hosting please let us know.

Preferences will be given to host families of students who are participating in the Carranballac College Year 8 return trip in October this year.

Please contact Chriss Barker by 25th May if you are interested in hosting students during our exchange program.

Rock Fest

Rock Fest is a battle of the bands competition that is run on the East Coast of Australia by Cranbourne Music. In 2017, over 900 students from over 100 schools competed in Rock Fest and we had the honour

of hosting the event for the Melbourne South West region, and will return as host in 2018. Great prizes are on offer for schools and individuals including a one year endorsement for players and recording time (for competitors in the National Grand Final). In fact, one of our VET bands progressed to the State Final last year! Mostly, for us, it’s not about the competition and prizes, it’s the opportunity for students to showcase their talents and see what other young musicians are capable of. For our VET students, Rock Fest will be counted as one of their assessable performances for the year. All

participants get a $20 voucher from Cranbourne Music.

Along with entries from other schools, all of our school bands, including the Senior Band (“Amplify”), the Junior Band (“Elevn”), Mr. Grima’s Year 9 VET Elective and the VET Certificate III students, will be involved. It’s going to be a huge day of rocking! Rock Fest is on Wednesday 20 June in the Boardwalk PAC. Performers will receive a Compass event note.

Upcoming Performances by “Elevn”

After the success of our recent camp and performance at Riddles Creek PS, “Elevn” will be rocking lunchtimes on:

Tuesday 22 May at the Boardwalk School PAC Tuesday 29 May at the Jamieson Way School near the canteen (wet weather option TBA)

Keep an eye out for performances by our various VET bands at our College this term.

Special mention goes to Lachlan (9C), who came 1st in the Under 15 boys High Jump, clearing 1.73m.

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students’ perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child’s schooling experience.

Students from Years 4 to 9 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey.

Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the

survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 21 May to Friday 1 June. The survey only takes 20 minutes to complete and occurs during your child’s class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of term 2. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.

If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx

SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT | MATT NIELSONWelcome to the first of our planned, ongoing series of reports from the Carranballac P-9 College, School Council as part of our mission to further engage with the College community.

Our most recent meeting was held on May 8th where we had a very full agenda. This was the first full meeting of the newly

elected council with several new members doing a great job of coming up to speed quickly. We successfully actioned a number of routine items. I would like to highlight the following which I think will be of interest to the community.

The Council is currently considering the following matters pending further development:

• An electronic online ordering system for parents to make and pay for canteen orders for students.

• Formalising the relationship between Carranballac P-9 College and the “Sweethearts”, a girls jazz band program supported and run by The Sweethearts Foundation which is a not for profit association operating under government regulation formed in the year 2000 based in Geelong.

• Updates to existing, and the creation of new Carranaballac P-9 College policies.

• Facilitating the inclusion of two Student Members from year 7, 8 or 9 to the School Council later this year, as per the Department of Education guidelines.

I will update on the above matters as they progress. As always, the council welcomes any involvement and input from the community.

Carranballac P-9 College is a key participant in the Teaching Academy of Professional Practice program. We are taking part in a program involving a cluster of schools working in partnership with Victoria University.

We hope to establish leading practice in providing quality pre-service teacher education, professional learning and research opportunities for all teachers in our area. We have 8 pre-service teachers completing a Masters of Teaching in Secondary Education working across Boardwalk and Jamieson Way in the Year 7, 8 and 9 classrooms. There are also several pre-service teachers, completing their Bachelor of Education, assigned to both schools in the Primary classrooms.

Our pre-service teachers are immersed in leading professional practice and have opportunities to integrate educational theory and research components within the school experience. We work in a close partnership with the University Lecturer and the Education Department to ensure that we have a shared vision and goals for quality teacher education. The Academy program is a reform under the Federal Government’s Smarter Schools National Partnership on Improving Teacher Quality (TQNP) initiative. The program is funded by the Department of Education and Training.

Our College works collaboratively to provide

excellent practical and professional training for future teachers. Within our learning community we are committed to excellence in teaching practice, engagement of students and development of professional knowledge. By having an extensive pre-service program we are able to share this excellence within the broader learning community and assist with the preparation of pre-service teachers for job readiness and entry into our valued profession.
