Dear MembersAsHonTreasurer,IfeltthiswouldbeanopportunetimetogiveallmembersanoverviewoftheClub’sfinancialperformanceforthefirsthalfofourfiscalyear.

INCOME ForthesixmonthsperiodtoSeptember2011,incomefromsubscriptions,entrancefees,rentalsandotherswereclosetothatearnedlastyear,butweareprojectingthatbythisfiscalyearend,wewillendupwithalowerincomethanlastyear.Thiswasbecausethe2ndhalfperiodoflastyearsawabigincreaseinentrancefeesfromnewmemberships,aresultoftheaggressivemembershipinitiativeslaunched.Recruitmentofnewmembersthisyearwasmoredifficultasconcernoverthelandleasedeepens.Tocounterthisconcern,theMCapprovedandlaunchedaspecialTermMembershipatonly$1,500ayear,whichisinclusiveofthemonthlysubscriptions.ThisTermmembershipcanberenewedyearonyearandthememberhastheoptiontoconverttheirtermmembershiptoanOrdinaryMembershipata“discounted”entrancefeesoncethelandleaserenewalisfinalised.MoredetailscanbeobtainedfromourMembershipdepartmentandwehopeourmemberscanhelptheClubbyspreadingthisoffertorelatives,friends,colleaguesandbusinessassociates!

Ourjackpotcontributionsfellby28%inthelastfinancialyearover2009,andforthefirstsixmonthsofthisfiscalyear,hasfallenbyanother20%.Itisaveryheavyimpactof$260,000lossestoourbottomlinelastyear.ThisdrasticdropinjackpotrevenuesisthedilemmanotonlyfacedbyCBCbutallclubsinSingapore.Manyclubs,toalleviatetheheavylosses,havehadnochoicebuttoincreasesubscriptionstohelpthefinancesbutwedecidedinsteadtoexploreallotheravenuestomanageourcosts,reduceour

areasoflossesandputinaggressiveeffortstoincreaseourrevenues.Wehopetoimproveourjackpotsituationwiththerecentadditionof4newfruitmachinesinourJackpotroom.Wehavealsoreprogrammedsomeoftheexistingmachinesandreleasedthe200creditlimitsaccordingly.Membersnowhaveachoiceofdifferentbettingdenominationsrangingfrom1c,2c,5c,10c,20cand50ctosuitindividualpreferences.PleasedoheadondowntotheJackpotRoomtotryyourluckandsupportyourClub!

Inourattemptstoreducetheexpectedshortfallinincome,wehavebeenpushinghardtofillupthechaletroomsandmeetingrooms.To-date,thisareahasshownanincreasedcontributionof40%overlastyear.Westronglyencourageourmemberstohelpusbyswingingsomeofyourofficemeetings,seminarsandsocialfunctionsovertoourClub.

COSTSDuetoinflationandotherfactors,operatingexpenditureisexpectedtoincreaseyearonyear.To-date,despitetightcostcontrols,operatingexpenseswere3%higherthanlastyear,mainlyduetohigherrepairsandmaintenancecostsasourmachinery,equipmentandfixturesgetolder,staffcostsandutilitiescharges.

DespiteimplementingmeasurestocontroltheDeckBarlosses,risingcostshaveeliminatedoureffortsandinevitably,wewillhavetoincreaseourbarprices.Wehavecomparedpricesandwiththeincrease,ouroverallpricingwillstillbecompetitive.TheincreasingcostofliquorisbeyondourcontrolandwehopememberswillunderstandandcontinuetosupporttheDeckBar.

LOSSESOverall,ourlossesto-datehaveexceededlastyear’s,themainfactorsbeinglowerjackpotcontributionsandincreasedcosts.Restassured,effortswillnotbesparedandwehopebythefiscalyearend,wewillbeabletoimproveonthefinancialperformance.

LAND LEASEWithregardstothelandleaserenewal,wehavebeenincontactwiththeSingaporeLandAuthority(SLA),UrbanRedevelopmentAuthority(URA)andtheSingaporeSportsCouncil(SSC).InourlatestmeetingwithSingaporeSportsCouncil,itwasconfirmedthatSSCwillnotbeabletohelptheClubsecureanewlandleaseunderSSC.ButSSChasassuredusthattheywillhelpusinthiscause.TheyhavecommittedtoworkwithusandtherelevantauthoritiestotrytoachieveanearlyoutcomesothatCBCcanplanforitsfutureaccordingly.ThegoodnewsatthismomentisthatURAhasadvisedthatthesitethattheClubcurrentlyoccupieswillcontinuetoberetainedforrecreationaluse.

We,theMC,areallmembersoftheClub,andwewouldliketoreassureourmembersthatourtoppriorityisstilltosecureafurthercontinuanceofthelandleaseforourClub.Itiswiththisobjectiveinmind,thatwehavebeenveryprudentinourapproachtohandlingtheClub’sfinances.Wearehappytoinformmembersthatwehaveaddedanother$800,000tothe“fixed”fundssetasideforthispurpose.Wenowhaveatotalof$4.6millioninfixedtermdepositscomparedtothe$3.8millionattheendofthelastfiscalyear.Ourtotalcashandfixeddepositsstandat$5.7millionasatendSept2011comparedto$4.1millionattheendofMar2009.

Wehopethatwiththisshortupdate,membersoftheClubwillstepforwardtohelptheClubinanywaytheycanandletusallunitetoachieveourcommongoaltogether,andthatistogetthelandleaserenewed!

CBC Golf Championship 2011TheannualChangiBeachClubGolfChampionship2011washeldon15&16October2011.Atotalof27golfersparticipatedinthisevent.Thisyear,anewcoursewaschosenforthe2dayeventheldatthePadangGolfSukajadiandPalmSpringscoursesinBatam.System36Stablefordwasthegamerulechosenforthechampionship.ThenewcoursewasPadangGolfSukajadiwhichboastsbeautifullushgreensandgreatscenery.

OnreachingBatam,everyonehadaquicklunchbeforegettingreadyforteeoff.Byevening,thegolferscompletedthe18holesandweretransferredtoNovotelHotelforcheck-in.Afterwashingup,theygatheredforaseafooddinneratanearbyrestaurant.

Thegolferssharedjokesandstoriesoftheirgolfexperiencesandalsowatchedalivesoccermatchshownonabigscreen.Thedayendedwitharelaxingmassageforeveryonetorecoverforthenextday.

Onthe2ndday,thegolfershadaheartybreakfastwithchoicesofpancakes,cereal,nasilemak,saladsandpastriesatthehotel.UponarrivalatthePalmSpringsGolf&BeachResort,theygotreadyforthe2ndroundofthetournament.Addingtothefunandchallenge,agameof“nearesttothepin”challengewasorganisedatapar3course.

TheMen’sCategoryrolledoffon30NovemberwherebowlerscompetedtoqualifyfortheMastersroundheldon11December.

TheYouthandLadies’Categoriescompetitionwasaonedayaffairwhichtookplaceon10December.MsMichelleNgemergedastheLadiesChampionandtheYouthChampionwasMrVintonAng.

BowlersfromboththeYouthandLadies’Categorieswerepresenton11Decembertocheerthe16malebowlerswhoqualifiedfortheMasters.Theycompetedinthestepladderformatandscoreswereveryclose.Aftermanyhardfoughtgames,MrVernonAngemergedastheMen’sChampion.

AlltheparticipantsproceededtotheClub’srestaurant,SeaBlissfordinner.Theprizepresentationwasalsoheldintherestaurantandwinnerswerepresentedwithtrophiesandprizes.

TheCBCWalk-A-JogwasheldonabrightandsunnySunday,20November2011andattracted72participants.Theyweregivensouvenirteeshirtsandsunglasses.

OurGymInstructor,Rahmadconductedthewarm-upsessionbeforeCBC’sPatron,MrAbdullahTarmugiflaggedofftherunat8.30am.

Thisyear’seventhadanewroutefromtheClubdowntoNetheravonRoadandtoChangiPointFerryTerminal.Fromthere;thereturnroutecoveredthewholestretchoftheBoardwalkbacktoChangiBeachClub,atotaldistanceof4km.Formanyoftheparticipants,itwasthefirsttimetheycoveredthewholestretchoftheBoardwalkandenjoyedthescenicviewandthebreeze.

Wheneveryonewasbackattheclub,theyproceededdowntotheCaféareatoresttheirtiredfeetandenjoyedabreakfastofNasiLemakanddrinks.

Beforetheeventrolledoff,SantaClausappearedandeverybowlerreceivedapresentandatthesametimecelebratedthebirthdayofMrFongCheeKheong,oneofthebowlers.Afterthefirstgame,allthebowlersweretreatedtoabuffetdinnerandcontinuedwiththeirgamesafterthebreak.Excitementreachedthepeakwhenplayingthethirdgamewheremostofthelightsinthebowlingalleywereswitchedoffexceptthe

lightsthathighlightedthepins.Thebowlerswerethrilledbytheexperienceofbowlinginthedark.

Thetopicsincludedtherelationshipsbetweenhealth,weightandageandthelatestgeneticbreakthroughintotalanti-agingsolutions.Theparticipantsalsohadfreeanalysisoftheirbodycompositions.

Interestedintakingamorepro-activeroleincaringforyourhealth?Lookoutformoreup-comingworkshopsandtalks.

ThePeranakanNightwasheldonthe29October2011,Saturday.ChanAhKowHallwasdecoratedwith‘batik’andPeranakanmemorabiliatoreflectthistheme.Theeventattracted97membersandguestsandtheyweretreatedtoabuffetspreadofauthenticPeranakanfood.FrancisHoganandAliciaAngentertainedwithaPeranakanskit.LadieswhocamedressedinkebayaswereselectedtotakepartintheBest-dressedaward.DancingenthusiastsmovedtothebeatprovidedbytheClub’sresidentband.Theeventculminatedwithaluckywhere12participantswenthomewithprizes.

Mahjong Competition 2011ThesecondeditionofCBCMahjongCompetition2011,heldon16October2011,Sunday,attracted54participantsrangingfromaspiringtoestablished‘mahjongknights”tocompeteintheday-longeventattheChanAhKowHall.Thecompetitionkickedoffaftertheplayersenjoyedalightbreakfast.

After3roundsofintensecompetition(withbreaksinbetweenforlunchandtea)MrTanTeckTinwascrownedtheChampionwithanimpressivetotalscoreof2,032points.Thefirstandsecondrunners-upwereMrStevenLaiFookWahandMrStevenFernandezrespectively.

Aftertuckingintoabuffetdinner,theChairmanofChangiBeachClub,MrWilsonChuagaveawaytheawardsandluckydrawprizes.

De Binjai Jungle Ramble Trekking16adventurousmembersandgueststookupthechallengetotrekthroughBukitTimahNatureReserveonacoolSaturdaymorningonthe12November,2011.StartingfromBinjaiPark,thetrektookthemthrougholdkampongvegetation,batfilled-tunnels,climbedsteepslopesstrewnwithobstaclesliketreetrunksandbouldersandplodalongamuddystream.TheendpointwasatMurnaneReservoir,reachedafter3hoursofsweatandtoil.

Livinginanurbanisedenvironment,thetrekprovidedarareopportunityforthemtobewithnature.Theguidealsoshared

Beingahotfavouriteamongmembers,itwasanotherfullhouseas140membersandgueststhrongedtheChanAhKowHallfor2011SocialTeaDanceIIIonSundayafternoon,13November2011.Onceagain,regularsandnewbiesshowedofftheirfancyfootworkasDJJasonKaispunamixoftunespopulartothecrowd.Besidesenjoyingthemselvesonthedancefloor,participantsgottomeetupwiththeirfriendsforanafternoonoflaughter,dancing,relaxationandcatchingup.Theparticipantswerealsotreatedtoadelicioustea-timebuffet.Duetotheoverwhelmingresponse,someofourmemberswereunabletojoininthisevent.Wewouldliketotakethisopportunitytoexpressourregretsthattheyhadtomisstheteadanceandthankthemfortheircontinuoussupport.

Santa’sarrivalwasmetwithexcitedsquealsandclapping.Santadidnotdisappointthem,givingoutgoodiesandpresentstoall.Thepartycontinuedwithluckydrawsandballoonsculpturing.TheeveningclimaxedwitheachkidgettingtheopportunitytohavetheirpicturestakenwithSanta!

OnSaturday,24December2011,revellersgatheredintheDeckBarforChristmasParty2011.ParticipantswereissuedwithSantahatsandthebarstaffweredeckedinSantarinacostumes,creatingafestivemood.ThenightstartedoffwithaChristmasfeastconsistingofSanta’sWinterSalad,JuicyHerb-RoastTurkey,ProfondoFrittoPlatter,Shepherd’sPie,ChristmasForest,ChickenChowder,GarlicButteredRicewithRaisinandChocolateCreamPuff.

Inbetweenbandperformancesandlotsofdancing,gamessuchas‘PredictionGame’&‘PinataHitting’wereplayedandtheparticipantshadajollygoodtime.Asmidnightapproached,everyonegatheredonthedancefloorfortheChristmascountdown.ChristmasDaywaswelcomedwithloudcheers,poppingpoppers,whistlingandhuggingwhilesingingtoChristmasCarols.Thecelebrationwasfollowedbythecuttingoflogcakesandmoredancing.Thefinaleforthefestivitieswastheluckydrawsandeventhoughnoteveryonewonapresent,alltheparticipantsleftinhighspiritsandinafestivemood.
