PREPARATION OF THE OFFERINGS

The minister prepares the bread, saying:

Like a lamb led to the slaughteror a sheep before the shearers,Christ wás silent and did not open his mouth.

Then he pours wine and water into the cup and says:

I mix wine and water in this cuP,symbols of the blood and waterwnien fl.oweel from the side of our Lord Jesus Christ

on the cross.

He then covers the offerings: first, with the small veils; then with the

large veil, saying:

LIGHTING OF THE CHURCH

While the celebrant is vesting, the deacon turns on the lights of thechurch and lights the candles, The congregatiott remains SEATED.

BLESSING AND DISTRIBUTION OF ASHESA table is placed within the sanctuary for the blessing of theashes, On it øre placed the ashes prepared from the palms ofthe previous yeer, two candles, e cross, incense, and holywater.

The celebrant and ministers assemble around the table. The

Supplication of Saint James

The celebrant and ministers may alternate the followingsupplication of Saint James with the congregation.

I I yearn for your pardon, come to me, Lord.While there is still time,give me tears to beg for your mercy.For your favors, I thirst, O Lord;without them, I cannot stand.O Sea of Mercy, pour forth on me your

overflowing kindness.

II I have sinned, O Lord, and I now implore you:

Distribution of the Ashes

TI{URSDAY OF THE MYSTERIES

'lhe Book of Rituals (Rorne, 1839) retains two traditions of

the Maronite Church. The oldest one required the washing of

the feet of the whole congregation present at the service. The

nnre recent tradition limited the washing to twelve persons

representing the Twelve Apostles.

The rite of washing of feetwas originally accompanied by a

group of qolehlhymns with their prayers and a soogitho

(ordered according to the letters ofthe alphabet). Thefirst

prayer the soogitho are used in the present service as the

beginning of the rite. During the soogitho the twelve persons

chosen to have their feel washed come forward and take their

places at the chairs prepa

The ahar is covered in white. A side altar or table is prepared

to receive the consecraled eucharist for the Anaphora of

Signing of the Chalice. This altar (or table) is covered in

white and is decorated with flowers and candles. These

decorations should be kept simple.

A cross with the body of Christ on it is prepared in ftont of

the main altar. Lighted candles are placed ort each side of thecro.9s.

A pitcher of water, a basiry and towels are placed on a table in

the sanctuary.

Twelve chairs are placed in the sanctuary lor those whose feetwill be washed. Six chairs are arranged on each side of the

ADORATION OF TIIE CR.OSS

A table is placed outside the sanctuary in the cenlral aisle of the

church. It is covered with a dark cloth which will later be u.çed as

the shroud. The faithful should be encouraged to bring flowers and

place them on the cloth before the service begins"

If possible, a cross is used which has a removable hody. If a small

cross is used, it may be placed on the table, facing thecongreg,ation. If a large cross is used, it may simply be leaned

against the table, facing the congregation.

After the korozooto, the body is removed from the cross, placed in

the shrouy' and carried around the church. The empty cross

remains at the front of the church.

If the body cannot easily be removedfrom

the cross, the cross with

the body still attached to it is placed in the shrouy' canied around

the church, and buried in the tomb.

An unlighted candle is placed on each side of the cross, and ø finedark cloth is placed on the table, at the foot of the cross.
