A family farm shop has scooped a clutch of top food awards after a last-minute decision to enter the prestigious Lincolnshire Poacher Competition.

James and Henny Pinchin, of Pinchin’s Family Farm Shop and Tea Room at Algarkirk, had not

even heard of the Lincolnshire County Foods competition until just a few days before this year’s

big event at the county showground. But they came away with a haul of 14 awards from the 19

categories they entered – four gold, eight silver and two bronze.

Now they are hoping their success and their continued commitment to the best of Lincolnshire

food will put their off-the beaten track enterprise firmly on the county food map. They were

awarded Gold’s for their Lincolnshire sausage, speciality sausage, beef steak pie and bacon.

Silvers came for their beef and orange sausage, gluten-free Lincolnshire sausage, Lincolnshire

plum bread, Kentish hop sausage, beef and red wine sausage, Roman sausage (made with

chicken and cheese), traditional pork sausage and beef, mushroom and horseradish sausage.

Bronze awards were made for their Gloucester lamb pie and pork and apple burgers. They will

receive their awards at a presentation ceremony at the Epic Centre on the Lincolnshire Show-

ground on Wednesday, November 28.

Henny said: “We heard about the competition very late and only had five days to get our entries

organised.” The couple, helped by their butcher, Robert Cowell, and James’ parents, have been

busy building up the business since they moved to Algarkirk from Oxfordshire six years ago.

They now have a loyal regular customer base but are hoping more will hear about them. The

shop is in Church Lane, off the A16 near Sutterton roundabout, on the opposite side of the road

to Algarkirk village.

The couple had been livestock and arable farmers in Oxfordshire where they also ran a farm

shop. James’ family had been Oxfordshire farmers for more than 60 years.

They started at Algarkirk with a small 15 foot square shop selling just vegetables.

Now their premises have quadrupled and include home-grown fruit and vegetables,

an in-house butchery, farm-reared meats and home-made pies and pastries.

Where season and supply allows all produce comes from the farm and all meat is fattened

there. The Pinchins have even gone in for a little cross breeding to

produce a leaner lamb and specialise in Dexter cattle. They also have pigs and ewes on their 14

acres. The shop and tea room features work by local artists and is open Monday to Saturday

from 9am to 5.30pm, with openings on Sundays for special occasions, such as the forthcoming

British Sausage Week and, of course, the run up to Christmas.

Telephone orders are taken (01205 460632) and home delivery available,

ALGARKIRK POLICING NEWSLETTER

DON’T GIVE THEIVES AN OPEN INVITATION

There have been a number of Burglaries/Thefts in the past few months from in and around the parish of Kirton. Unlocked doors or windows have been the main cause of this particular type of crime. if you are going out even for a short time, PLEASE close and secure all win-dows and doors. Open windows and doors may let fresh air in but they also allow easy access and provide tempting opportunities for thieves who need just seconds to walk or reach in and take purses and other valuables from tables and worktops. A determined burglar can get through the smallest of open windows. So, whenever you go out-no matter how long for, make sure you shut and secure all windows and doors. Insecure conservatories have also been targeted. Before you go to bed at night, PLEASE check that you have secured your conservatory. We have also seen an increase in garden shed thefts in the area. Items stolen from sheds include, ride on and petrol Lawn Mowers, petrol Strimmers and Hedge Cutters. If you own any of the items above, and you keep them in a garden shed or out building, PLEASE make a note of the serial numbers and write down a full description of the items and security mark it. If possible PLEASE take a good quality colour photograph as this could help to identify it should it be taken in future. We invite you to contact us if you have any issues with anti social behaviour. If you suffer it, report it. HELP US IN THE FIGHT AGAINST ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR (ASB)!!!!!!!! Help us to keep crime out of YOUR community. Kirton Police Station is the base for officers covering the Rural West area. It is based on Station Road, in Kirton (opposite the Town Hall) Over the past few months we have had numerous calls regarding Anti-Social Behaviour in and around Sutterton/ Algarkirk, particularly the Stanley Drive, Park Avenue and Maidens Road area. We suspect that this behaviour is being carried out by local youths that are either visiting or live within the community of Sutterton/ Algarkirk, and may even live on the roads affected. Antisocial behaviour (asb) is any aggressive, intimidating or destructive activity that damages or destroys another person's quality of life. IF YOU ARE SUFFERING ASB WE NEED YOUR HELP! LET US KNOW WHO IS CAUSING THE ASB We can supply you with an ASB diary. If you see any act of ASB, you complete the diary. This will act as evidence and make dealing with the perpetrators much easier. If you require a diary please contact Kirton Police Station on the number below. If you would like to contact Kirton Police staff, please call 01205 722002 Or contact 101, or in an Emergency 999.

Latvian Christmas yellow bread

Ingredients 400ml/15fl oz full fat milk 675g/1¼lb plain flour pinch of salt 75g/3oz unsalted butter 75g/3oz caster sugar 80g/3¼oz sultanas 2 sachets of dried yeast 5g/¼oz saffron, ground 2 medium eggs Fine zest of ½ lemon 50g/2oz nibbed or chopped almonds beaten egg yolks to glaze cardamom, freshly ground icing sugar to dredge Preparation method Bring milk and butter to room temperature. Dissolve the yeast in half of the milk with 5g/1 tsp of the weighed sugar, leave in a warm place to foam (should take about 15 minutes). Beat in the remaining ingredients except the flour and the almonds. Mix in the flour till you have a smooth and elastic dough. Cover well with plastic film and place in fridge overnight. Remove from the fridge and divide the dough into three. Knock back, on a lightly floured board, and roll into even lengths, a few feet long. After bread has been left to rise, it needs to have the excess air knocked out of it before proving. This is called 'knocking back'. -Using floured hands, scrape the risen dough from the bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface. -Knead the dough roughly for a few minutes until it looks as it did before it was left to rise (soft, smooth and elastic). Plait the dough and pinch the ends to seal. Form into a ring and place on baking parchment on a tray, cover lightly with plastic film and prove till double in size. Brush with the beaten yolk (let down with a little milk), then scatter over the almonds and a good pinch of the ground cardamom. Place in the oven which has been preheated to 190C/375F/Gas 5 and bake for about 30 minutes till golden. When the base is tapped and sounds hollow, the loaf is done. Remove from the oven and dredge generously with the icing sugar.
