Resurrection Hymn - Tone 5 Let us believers praise and worship the Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born for our salvation from a Virgin, for He willed to ascend the Cross in the flesh, to suffer death, and to raise the dead, by His glorious Resurrection!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

Hymn of Greatmartyr George - Tone 4 Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Hymn of the Theotokos - Tone 5 Rejoice O Uncrossed gate! Rejoice, O Wall and Protection of those who hasten unto you. Rejoice, O quiet have who has not known wedlock. O You who have given birth in the flesh to your Creator and God, you shall continue to intercede for the sake of those who praise and magnify your birth-giving!

Prokeimenon in Tone 4 (Song of the Three)

Blessed art Thou, O Lord God of our Fathers, and praised and glorified is Thy Name forever!

For Thou art just in all that Thou hast done for us!

Epistle: Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40

B RETHREN, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment

with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched rag-ing fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept re-lease, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, af-flicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was prom-ised, since God had foreseen something bet-ter for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.+

Alleluia in Tone 4 (Ps 18)

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Moses and Aaron were among His priests; Samuel also was among those who called on His Name!

v. They cried to the Lord and He heard them!

Gospel: John 1:44-52

! T THAT TIME, Jesus decided

to go to Galilee. And he

found Philip and said to him,

"Follow me." Now Philip was from Beth-

saida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael, and he said to

him, "We have found him of whom

Moses in the law and also the prophets

wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of

Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can

anything good come out of Nazareth?"

Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus

saw Nathanael coming to him, and said

of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in

whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to

him, "How do you know me?" Jesus

answered him, "Before Philip called you,

when you were under the fig tree, I saw

you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi,

you are the son of God! You are the King

of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because

I said to you, I saw you under the fig

tree, do you believe? You shall see

greater things than these." And he said

to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will

see heaven opened, and the angels of

God ascending and descending upon the

Son of man."+

Visitors We are happy that you joined us today, and we want you to know the following;

• Visitors and children are always welcome at all of our worship services.

• You won't be asked to do anything that would make you uncomfortable.

• We don't expect visitors to contribute anything financially to support our parish.

• Our children worship with us, and we love having them here.

If you are an Orthodox Christian, please introduce yourself to Fr. John before the service begins, so that, if possible, you may receive the Holy Mysteries of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you are not an Orthodox Christian, we invite you to partake of the blessed bread distributed at the end of the service, to fill out a “Welcome” card (available in the Narthex), and to join us after the service for some hospitality!

A New Anaphora

Today the Choir will be introducing a new

Anaphora to our celebration of Divine Liturgy.

It is the hope of the Choir that this will raise

the level of reverence in our spirits during

worship and that everyone will join in as

quickly as possible. For this week, enjoy the

fruit of many months of preparation! Also, you

may notice that the Theotokion sung during

Lent (right after the consecration of the Holy

Gifts) is different.

During the Liturgy of St. Basil, instead of

“It is truly meet…” we sing

“All of Creation rejoices in Thee, O Full of

Grace. The Assembly of Angels and the Race of

Men, O Sanctified Temple and Spiritual Para-

dise, the glory of Virgins, of whom God was

incarnate and became a child. Our God before

the ages. He made your body into a Throne and

your womb he made more spacious than the

heavens - All of Creation rejoices in Thee,

O Full of Grace! Glory to Thee!”

Sundays in Great Lent Each Sunday in Great Lent is devoted to a particular theme.

TODAY: Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy - This Sunday’s theme is the triumph of the true faith of the Incarnation of Christ - God in the flesh, and God’s glory over falsehood and idolatry! A very Christian theme!

Next Sunday: Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas - This Sunday’s theme honors St. Gregory for his explicit teach-ing that God Himself interacts with His Creation for our salvation, but remains unknowable in His essence, preserving the truth that God Himself is both immanent, and inconceivable.

Third Sunday: Veneration of the Holy Cross - halfway through Lent, we lift up the Holy Cross of the Lord, and take solace in Christ’s victory over sin and death. The Cross brings joy to Christians be-cause of Christ’s victory over sin & death, and as we struggle against sin, it strengthens us.

Fourth Sunday: Sunday of St. John of the Ladder - On this Sunday the theme is the book by St. John “Climacus” identifying the ascent of virtue to holiness, readying us for the remainder of our Lenten journey. It is a sobering reminder of what is necessary to fulfill the Commandments of Christ, and a joyful map to holiness.

Fifth Sunday: Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt - The theme of this final Lenten Sunday is the story of St. Mary, a great sinner who became a great saint, and teaches us that the time to repent is now. Even at the eleventh hour, God receives those who repent, and lovingly grants them great grace to overcome every adversity!

FEAST OF FAITH

The Triumph of Orthodoxy

The Sunday in which we celebrate the victory of sound doctrine over heresy & false teaching.

Originally, the Prophets Moses, Aaron, and

Samuel were commemorated on this Sunday.

The Alleluia verses appointed for today's Lit-

urgy reflect this older usage.

Today we commemorate the "Triumph of Or-

thodoxy," the restoration of the holy icons in

the reign of the holy Empress Theodora

(February 11).

Historical theme

The theme of the day is victory of the True

Faith. "This is the victory that overcomes the

world, our faith" (1 John 5:4). Also, the icons

of the saints bear witness that man, "created in

the image and likeness of God" (Gen 1:26),

becomes holy and godlike through the purifi-

cation of himself as God's living image. The

connection of the victory over iconoclasm

with Lent is purely historical; the first Tri-

umph of Orthodoxy took place on this particu-

lar Sunday.

Spiritual theme

The first Sunday of Great Lent originally com-

memorated the Prophets such as Moses,

Aaron, and Samuel. The Liturgy's alleluia

verses and scripture readings appointed for the

Sunday of Orthodoxy reflect this older usage.

The Epistle reading is a completion of He-

brews 11:24-26, 32-12:2. The yet-to-be-

baptized catechumens of the early church

heard the Epistle about the Old Testament

men who lived by their faith in a promise

whose fulfillment they did not see. After the

righteous of the Old Testament are mentioned,

the Epistle says:

7

“And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise,

God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart

from us.”

The Gospel lesson is John 1:43-51, and it ends with a explanation of the something better of the

Epistle:

"You will see greater things than these." And He said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you,

hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon

the Son of Man."

Because of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ - the Invisible God became visible in the

flesh, in the material world. As a result, we can make icons, not of the Divine Nature (hence

icons of God the Father are blasphemous), but of the human nature which Christ revealed Him-

self in. Icons, therefore, are a necessary defense of Incarnational theology, stating with clarity

that matter is a vehicle for Divine grace, just as the body of Christ was the vehicle for our re-

demption and salvation.

We celebrate the Incarnation, Crucifixion in the flesh, Resurrection and Ascension of the physi-

cal body of Christ and the faith of the Gospel, pure, undefiled and unpolluted.

Glory to God for All Things!

Is Fish Allowed During Great Lent?

Several folks have asked for some clarification

regarding the Lenten Fast. There are only two

days in which fish is permitted during the fast of

Great Lent.

Annunciation Day - March 25th

Palm Sunday - April 8th

Otherwise, fish is not considered to be Lenten

fare.

Keep the faith - keep the fast.
