    GOP looks to add more

With primary, GOP looks toadd moreBy Tara DriggsStaff Writer | April 30 2009

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS After a seemingly unexpected Republican win in the

2008 Englewood Cliffs council elections, two more Republicans are hoping be

victorious. Primary candidates Carrol McMorrow and Martin Asatrian will be

running against Democratic incumbents Jerry Kasoff and Patrick Perin for this

    years primary election in June.

McMorrow, a licensed real estate agent and mother of three, and Asatrian, a

founding partner of Strausser and Asatrian LLP law firm, said their goals for

Englewood Cliffs include bringing about property tax relief, eliminating

wasteful spending and restoring checks and balances to the government body.

They believe that a pro to having a predominantly Republican council would

be to have a party in power that puts the greater interests of the residents of

Englewood Cliffs before individual self interests.

Both candidates feel that their individual talents, interests and knowledge can

add a lot to the council.

The skills Ive utilized as a civil rights attorney and as an adjunct professor of

Political Science at William Paterson University will help me negotiate through

the regulation and ordinances of the Borough, Asatrian said.

McMorrow added that the skills she has developed as a licensed real estate

agent, including dealing with property values, appraisals and comparative

market analysis would be an asset in view of the residential displeasure with

    the recent revaluation.

Incumbent candidates Kasoff and Perin are both looking forward to running

again. Perin, who is completing his first term on council, handles the finance,

    ambulance corps and recreations committees.

Kasoff has been on the council since 1997 and handles a lot of the

transportation and legal issues in the Borough. He is greatly concerned about

keeping taxes down for residents in the community.

Our main goal is to keep taxes down, Kasoff said. Especially in todays

economy, it is more important than ever to keep them under control. Its not

easy but we will do our best.

After Republicans Robert Agresta and Eric Petrones victory this past

November, McMorrow and Asatrian are excited about the future.

In a joint statement, the Republican candidates said, We are very proud of

the success of the Agresta and Petrone victory, and are looking forward to our

victory, so that we may address the concerns of the town.
