H o « o r s S.I. MORRIS On Saturday, November 7, 830 guests were welcomed in iln Rice Design Alliance's I 2th annual liindraising

gala by event co-chairs I.aura and Tom Bellows and I rimiiK' .\m\ Dave C hapman, along with RDA president Marilyn Arclier. This year's event, which broke records both in the number of people attending and in the amount ot money raised, honored Seth Irwin — better known as S.I. — Morns , a man who tor the lasi si \ decades has been involved in the design ot many ot I IOUMOM'S besl known and most notable buildings, among them the Astrodome and the Wortham Theater ( enter.

In keeping with Mor-ns ' history ol looking toward the future, gala environment chair Roger Sum trans-formed the t d w i n l lornberger Confer-ence Center into what was designated S.l.-ber-Spacc. The colorful setting tor the RDA gala was inspired by multi-colored I loberman transforming spheres, which were used as centerpieces tor (he dining tables, liright satin cloths in red, orange, green, purple, yellow, ami blue coveted those tables, .\m\ equally bright banners using the S.l.-ber-Spacc logo were hung from the ceiling.

Prior to sitting down to dinner, the crowd of architects, design professionals, urban dwellers, and M u n i s family tricnds bid hotly on 140 items featured in an auction organized by designer Vicki Mcintosh and her auction committee. Some of the more popular items up for bid were a replica of the playhouse at the Children's Museum donated by CE Ward t onstructors, a two-week stay in a 19th-century French farmhouse donated In ([race Pierce and Lise Liddell, a stay in Frank Lloyd Wright's Seth Peterson cot-tage on Wisconsin's Mirror l a k e compli-ments ot Maver, Brown is: Piatt, and a dinner of wild game prepared by Char-lotte Rothwell.

Richard Brown's Swing Orchestra provided music throughout the evening. following a memorable meal prepared by the Stone kitchen, S.I. Morris was pre-sented the RDA Award for Design Excel-lence, a ""Magnolia" Steuben glass howl donated by Neiman Marcus. When the award was announced. Morris was given a standing ovation. Cheering him on were

his wife Susie; daughters Maria Morris Hambourg and Laura Morris Walls with husbands Wirt anil Robert; suns Peter, David, and |ohn with wives Ian , Anne, and Susannah; granddaughters Sara, I i / / ic , and All; and many family friends.

A consummate businessman, S.I. Morris was a major factor in the building of not only the Astrodome (196.S) and the Wortham Center ( I9S7), but also the Houston Country i ilub l r»s~) , the first City National Bank Building (1961), the U.S. Post Office (1962). the Electric Tower (ISifiH), the Houston Post Building (19701, the Tin I louses (1974), the Hous-ton Public l ib ra ry (1975), the Texaco Office Building (1977), the first Baptist Church (1976), the Cdassell School ol Art (1978), One Riverway (1978), Three Riverway (1980), and the Inn on the Park (198 I). Morris also was instrumental in accomplishing the construction of the last work designed by I udwig Mies van der Robe, the Museum of Tine Arts, I louston's Brown Pavilion,

The Rice Design Alliance Award for Design Excellence is one of many awards given Morris over the years, among them fellow designation by the American Insti-tute of Architects (1 962); the Distin-guished Alumnus Award from Rice Uni-versity (1981); the ( u >bl Medal Award from the Association of Rice University alumni (1991); the Llewellen Pitts Award from the Texas Society of Architects (1992); and the Master Builder Award from the Association of General Contrac-tors (1992).
