A Mothers LoveThere is no love, like a mothers love,

    no stronger bond on earth

like the precious bond that comes from God,

to a mother, when she gives birth.

A mothers love is forever strong,

    never changing for all time

and when her children need her most,

    a mothers love will shine.

    God bless these special mothers,

    God bless them every one

for all the tears and heartache,

and for the special work theyve done.

When her days on earth are over,

    a mothers love lives on

    through many generations,

with Gods blessings on each one.

    Be thankful for our mothers,

for they love with a higher love

from the power God has given,

and the strength from up above.

    WHY, LORD,

    WHY?

    The main theme of todays

Gospel is found in thisquestion put to Christ by His

    disciples: Teacher, was it his

sin or that of his parents thatcaused him to be bornblind? This shows their

conviction that sin is thecause of infirmity. They

    touched on the eternal

    question: Why does God

allow misfortune to befallme? Do I deserve this? If God

is good, why is there so muchmisfortune and tragedy in this world? Why, Lord,

why?First of all, the fact that so much suffering existson earth strengthens our faith in the resurrection of

our body and our belief in a better life after death,

where the injustices of this world will all bestraightened out. If God is holy, loving and just, then

there will come a time when justice and equality will

prevail and all debts will be paid. The Evangelist John relates these words of

Christ: The Father Himself judges no one, but has

assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all men may

honor the Son just as they honor the Father (Jn. 5,22-23). Christ is not afraid of taking on the

obligations of a judge, in His own good time.

We are very wary of our democratic form ofjustice, so how are we to react to the Last Judgment,

in which Christ wants that no one should perish,

but all should have eternal life. The Lord has time, the wheels of Gods justice turn slowly. Gods

punishment for the sins and evil deeds of mankind is

not immediate, so those of us who live in this sinful

world must bear with the evil. We must alsoremember that he who does evil and sows suffering

will not escape but, sooner or later, will find himself

at the mercy of the just Judge. The Evangelist John tells about the rich man

who did not want to meet Christ, because everything

was going well for him. But, when his son fell ill, this man went to Christ and said: I beg You, come

to my house, or my son will die. Let this be a lesson

to us. Suffering and problems bring us to Christ. Weall know people who come to God when they are in

    The Ascension of Our

    Lord

    The feast f the Lord's

    snsn always falls n

    Thursday, n the fortieth day

    after Christ's resurrection.

This s n of the principal

feastdays of our Lord andtherefore, has post-feast of

    nn days. It celebrates the

    memory of Christ's snsn

    into heaven and underscores

    its significance for Christ and

    for us. St. John Chrysostom,

    n his homily n the

    snsn says: "Today the

    human race s completely

    rn-ciled with God. The

    ancient battle and enmity have

disap-peared. We, who were unworthy to live evenn earth - are now lifted u to heaven. Today we

bm heirs to the kingdom of heaven, we, who do

not even deserve earth, we ascend to heaven and

inherit the throne of the ing and Lord. umn

nature, against which the cherubim guarded paradise,

s now raised u above all the cherubim.'

Sources of the first three centuries do not speak

of this feast. Not even the writer Origen (+251)

mentions it, aIthough he lists the Christian feasts n

the eighth book of his work "Against lsus". Litur-

gical experts are of the nn that n the first three

centuries the celebration of this feast was mbinedwith that of the feast of the Descent of the l

Spirit (Pentecost). Silvia Egeria does not all this

feast the "sn-sn", but nl "the fortieth day

after the resurrection of Christ. "

n the fourth century the feast of the Lord's

    snsn bm universal feast, celebrated

everywhere. The istorian Socrates (+c.440) lls it

"general feast". (istory of the Church, 7,26)

The feast of the snsn was highly extolled n

the sermons of St. John Chrysostom, St. Gregory of

Nyssa, St. Epiphany of Cyprus, Leo the Great and

others. n the fourth century, Queen ln erected hurh at the l of Christ's sensn n honor of

    this feast.

The spirit of the services of this feast, s whole,

s u-lifting and joyful. The Church rejoices at the

glory of Christ (God and n), who s now seated at

the right hand of the Father. ascended into

heaven, n order to send us the m-forter - the l

Spirit - and to "prepare l for us,' (John 14,2) as

    he promised.

trouble and need help, and, when things are goingwell, only come to God on Easter and Christmas. But

the Lord wants to save us and, with suffering, calls

us to Himself.Todays Gospel tells us that Christ brought sight

to the eyes of the blind man. Let us ask Him to open

our eyes and mind to see the truth that God is always

with us, in good times and bad.

"The Lord ascended into heaven," we sing n thefirst stichera of the Great Vespers service of the feast

of the sn-sn, "n order to send the Comforter to

the world. Therefore, heaven prepared throne for

him and the clouds assisted him n his ascent. The

angels wonders they s mn more -alted than

they. The Father receives into his bosom him, who s

eternally with him. The l Spirit commands all

his angels: Lift up your gates lintels, O princes; all

you nations clap your hands; for Christ has ascended

    whither He was before.
