PENTECOST SUNDAY

The Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost, isa glorious feast, as great as Easter or Christmas.On the fiftieth day after Christs Resurrection, elevenapostles and the newly-named apostle Matthew met in thesame room where the Last Supper with Christ had beenheld. It is difficult to imagine the emotional state of the

apostles after Christs Resurrection. Christ had promisedthem that He would send the Holy Spirit but how thispromise was to be fulfilled was too much for their mindsto handle. They were like children, lost in a big city andsurrounded by hostile people. Frightened, they did notknow what to do, where to turn. But on the day the Jewscelebrated the harvest, when they offered up five loavesof bread to God, Christs promise was fulfilled. The HolySpirit descended on the apostles, with a gust of wind andthe appearance of tongues of flame. The apostles werefilled with the Holy Spirit, came out of the room andbegan to speak in foreign languages, glorifying and

preaching the Resurrected Christ. Doubt and sadness leftthem. The Church, the Community of God, was born,called by Him to fulfill the goal of salvation.Over two thousand years separate us from these people ofGod, these giants of faith, but the fruit of their labors iswith us today. The day the Holy Spirit descended is a daywithout end. The Holy Spirit today abides with us. Helives and acts in us once we have received the two HolySacraments of Baptism and Chrismation. When the priestanoints us with holy oil and sets upon us the seal of theHoly Spirit, the Holy Spirit enters us and, from that time,is always with us, protecting and directing our spiritual

life. Without His influence we would not be able to prayor receive the Eucharist. When we feel the need to go toConfession, it is through the intervention of the HolySpirit. Our sincere prayer during the Divine Liturgy is thework of the Holy Spirit and our presence in church on theFeast of Pentecost is through His grace. This is all part ofthe promise made by our Savior, Jesus Christ, who said:I will ask the Father and He will give you another

Paraclete to be with you always (Jn. 14, 15).The apostles preached Christ wherever the Holy Spiritsent them and we have the same obligation to bearwitness for Christ in our families, at work and

everywhere.On this glorious feastday, let us remember our deardeparted and pray for the eternal peace of their souls.
