The Stranger Among Us T R . C R M , A P

P C P L

The UN reports: “Gang warfare and violence have transformed parts of Central America into some of the most dangerous places on earth. In recent years, El

Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala (known as the Northern Triangle) have experienced a drama c escala on in organized crime by gangs, called “maras.” Thousands of parents have fled with their families and, in many cases, children have made the perilous journey alone. These unaccompanied children are some of the world’s most vulnerable refugees…” h ps://www.unrefugees.org/emergencies/central-america/

When we hear the nightly news reports about policies or laws to deal with refugees at our border, it is some mes hard to know what to do or think. Right a er the Exodus of the Children of Israel from Egypt, Scripture records “You shall not oppress a resident alien; you know the heart of an alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 23:9) The people of Moses’ day knew deep in their hearts what it was to be a stranger in a strange land. Oppression begins when we no longer understand in our hearts what it is to be a stranger looking for safety… for a home.

As Chris ans, our decision-making about how we treat our fellow human beings is governed by the Bap smal Covenant we repeated at Easter where we were asked, “Will you strive for jus ce and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?” We responded, “I will, with God’s help.”

So, when arguments start about how to deal with immigrants and refugees, no ma er what the details, we, as disciples of Jesus, have touchstones to decide where we stand: We check our hearts to see if we truly understand and have compassion for the stranger. Then, we ask if a measure will promote jus ce; will it lead to peace for all, and in the process, are we respec ng the dignity of every human being — na ve and those looking for a home?

Communion Milestone P 4

The Dean’s Challenge for Lent: “Change for Change”—One of the disciplines that are often “taken up” during Lent is almsgiving. We had an opportunity again this past Lent to change lives with just pocket change alone! The Challenge of the 40 days of Lent was to build homes for the poor. For only 90 cents per day (which would become $36 over the 40 days of Lent) we could gain $3,600 from 100 families. Last year we took in just over $3,700.00. I am so proud to announce that this year in addition to $1000 given from the Rector's Discretionary Fund for the food shortage crisis in Haiti, we took in $5,400.00. We thank all members who responded so generously the first Sunday of Lent with your donations during the visit of our preacher, a representative of “Food for the Poor”, Mother Carola Von Wrangel and for the additional donations and coin boxes collected during the Lenten Season! What an outstanding job!

The Good Friday offering, which is a yearly appeal from our Presiding Bishop, for the Diocese of Jerusalem, Israel, brought in this year $600.00.

Communion Milestone – First Communion Classes

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Reno, Nevada

Dear Families of Trinity Cathedral, Do you have a child/grandchild (7 years of age and older) who is ready to go through the Communion Milestone program? Once a child is bap zed they are openly invited to “commune” with their church families at our weekly Eucharist. Upon a aining the age of seven (as ra onal thinking skills begin) the Church has promoted and prac ced for several decades now the opportunity for children to learn more about Holy Communion and its significance in our spiritual development. The program is also designed for parents! Children have greater exposure to influences and development under the roof of their parents than any other place. However, many parents feel inadequate about guiding their children spiritually. The Communion Milestone course teaches and models for parents how to be spiritual mentors. True healthy living is rela onal and involves the interac on of a community. The Milestone program offers that opportunity for parents and children to learn together and share their thoughts and experiences.

Please contact Father William or the office to express your interest so that we may plan accordingly. There is a form to fill out to register for the class.

2019 Classes I am recommending this year that we schedule a block of Saturdays to accomplish our class goals.

Saturdays – May 25th, June 1st, and June 8th—9:30—11:30 AM Please Pre -Register

The Communion Milestone – First Communion Celebra on

will be on The Feast of Pentecost Sunday – June 9 at 9:00 AM

Music & Concerts | Vaca on Bible School (VBS) April was an enriching and moving month. The Easter Vigil service was lead beau fully by Dean Stomski and had a wonderful flow, se ng everything perfectly for Easter Sunday. For me, the Vigil service was the acme liturgically of the church year. The Choral Concert was another deeply enriching experience.
