A New BeginningBy: HaRav David Lau

Regarding the special Korbanot brought in the Beit HaMikdash on Rosh Hashanah, the Torah states, “You shall make a burnt offering of pleasant aroma to Hashem.” (Bamidbar 29:1) Our sages comment that in reference to all other offerings, the Torah uses the expression “you shall bring” while in describing the Korban of Rosh Hashanah, the Torah uses the expression “you shall create.” This nuance teaches us that Hashem views us on Rosh Hashanah following a successful judgment as a new creation.

This midrash is, at first glance, difficult to understand since we know that our judgment is not sealed until Yom Kippur. We should, therefore, not be viewed by Hashem as a new creation until after Yom Kippur. Why then would the Torah change the expression used for bringing the korban on Rosh Hashanah while with reference to the korban on Yom Kippur, the usual phrase of “you shall bring” is used.

Our sages teach us that the most important theme of Rosh Hashanah is the recognition and proclamation that Hashem is the Almighty King of the universe. This is, in essence, the first step to repentance, since one who transgresses does so primarily because he forgets that Hashem is the ultimate King who judges us by our actions. Indeed, this theme of Hashem as the Almighty King resonates throughout the Rosh Hashanah service

in the constant reiteration of the word “HaMelech” – the King – and the special portion of the Rosh Hashanah Shmoneh Esreh called Malchiot.

It is for this reason that all year long we recite the first paragraph of Shema prior to the second paragraph. The second paragraph deals with acceptance of Hashem’s commandments while the first paragraph deals with acceptance of Hashem as our G-d. Before accepting the commandments, we must accept Hashem’s supreme rule. Once we have accepted Hashem’s supreme rule, obeying his commandments comes naturally.

Establishing the correct path for oneself is the beginning of self improvement. Once a person decides on the correct path, he has taken the first step in the right direction. I have special admiration for those who were not born in Israel but decided to make Aliyah on their own free will. By making Aliyah, you have not only chosen the correct path, but you have taken crucial steps along that path. Just as our recognition on Rosh Hashanah of Hashem as the supreme Almighty King starts us along the path of repentance, your Aliyah to Israel to dwell in Hashem’s kingdom is the first step on the path to spiritual ascent. May we all merit Hashem’s guidance on the path of the coming year, and may we witness Hashem’s salvation as he leads us on the path to Zion with joy.

Best Wishes for a Ktivah V’Chatimah Tovah,HaRav David Lau Chief Rabbi of Modiin

A Memorable PatientBy: Dr. Paul Gaon

I was recently asked about my most memorable patient. At first, I could not easily reach out and grasp a particular moment or patient that stood out clearly but then whilst driving a few weeks ago one particular incident came to mind.

Fatima was a sweet, happy seven-year-old girl with an infectious laugh and from what I could make out was very articulate in her native tongue, Arabic. She had even picked up a few words in English. She had arrived on my hospital shift in London on a busy Saturday afternoon straight from Heathrow Airport sent by the Syrian authorities for specialized treatment for acute leukemia. Compared to other emergency transfers she seemed to be in quite good condition and she seemed to wear a permanent smile and giggled with her older sister and parents as I was taking the history and medical details from the doctor who brought her over. The truth of the matter was that this was an easy admission as she was stable and the only things I needed to organize were some investigatiions for Monday morning.

Later that day when things started to settle, I returned to the ward to see how Fatima was doing. We sat and played with one of the puzzles on the floor and she appered to be having fun. Fatima’s mother could speak very little English but her father could speak with very minor errors with a thick Arabic accent. We began to chat and I soon realized that this poor family had been through a terrible ordeal in the Syrian hospital near to Damascus and the fact that Fatima could still smile was testimony to how much her parents had taken the worries and grief on their shoulders to shield Fatima from the cruelty of the terrible illness.

“You not from England?” he asked.

“Actually my parents are Egyptian,” I replied. He grasped my hand with both his and told me, “’Salam Waleichum’ my brother. You take good care of my daughter, you see she is very special.”

I paused for a second and debated with myself whether to tell him I was in fact Jewish. I did but in a kind of cowardly way which for the rest of the evening I felt a bit guilty about because I had been brought up to be a proud Jew. However I’d read in the Jerusalem Report only recently about how rife was state anti-semitism and how the protocols of Zion were still being read in secondary schools. He responded with a kind smile which I had difficulty interpreting. Anyway the guilt only lasted as long as the next beep to another part of the hospital. I smiled to the parents and gave Fatima a hug and told her in a primitive sign language to get some sleep. She waved and I left.

At about 3:00 that night I was finally making my way to my on-call room to grab some sleep when my journey was interupted by a beep from the ward. The nurse told me to come straight away because Fatima had

started complaing of a severe headache. By the time I came up she had started to fit and we started emergency treatment. Before long she was sedated, ventilated and on her way to CT. It emerged she had suffered a huge bleed in her brain and the bad news was that it was extensive and she was taken to intensive care. Her parents were crying and praying and we were all in shock.

I came to visit Fatima and her parents daily on ICU. Her parents sat vigil all day and all night hoping for some signs of improvement. Eventually on Tuesday morning Fatima died.

About two weeks afterwards, Fatima’s parents came up to my ward with flowers and chocolates to say thank you for everything we had done. I sat down with the father in the parents’ room. I felt his grief and we looked at each other and said nothing. Then he said that he must tell me just one thing. That Saturday afternoon when they had arrived Fatima had asked her father that if the Jews hate us so much why was I being nice to her and caring for her. He told me that he had explained to her that we were all children of G-d and hatred is what man creates and G-d only knows love and we should try be like Him.

At that moment we looked into each others eyes and just for a second it was clear I think we were thinking the same thought: Jew, Arab, white, black, orange, blue it doesn’t matter. We are all brothers and sisters. I hope that Fatima took with her the beautiful meassage that her father had told her that day because I know I did.

With the rainy season soon upon us, it is important to go over some useful tips for household appliances.

For those of you who live in houses or garden apartments and have garden lighting, now is the time to walk around your garden and check for any broken light fixtures -- during the summer your kids might have damaged them by mistake while playing ball. Light fixtures that have bulbs missing are exposed to the rain and will only cause problems during the winter. Open and exposed wires are dangerous and when they get wet from rain they can cause electrical shorts leading to power failures at the most inconvenient times. Sometimes it is easy to find where the problem is, but most times you will have to call in a professional.

Let’s go into our homes and see how some very small tips can help in the long term maintenance of some of our household appliances. Starting with computers: a few things that computers do not like are heat, dust and power failures. It is very important to dust behind and around your computers. Also make sure that there is nothing blocking the flow of air around your computer and don’t cover the air vents on your screens. To protect your computer and other household appliances against power failures and brownouts, I suggest that you purchase surge protectors, which also protect appliances from lightning.

If I mentioned the bad word “dust”, then another appliance that does not like dust is the refridgerator. One should occasionally pull out the fridge and clean behind and also wipe down the black metal tubes on

the back of the fridge. If your fridge does not have these black tubes, which is the case with most American fridges, your will find them close to the floor. Vacuum by the front of the fridge at floor level. One should not push the fridge all the way back towards the wall -- keeping space around the fridge allows for proper air flow and will help your fridge work/cool properly and be more efficient.

A few tips for your dryers: if your air hose dangles out the window, you should make sure that the hose is straight and not bent. A bent hose can cause the exhaust air to stop flowing freely and in turn it will take longer for your clothes to dry and increase the running costs of the dryer. Make sure your pipe outside is also straight and not in a position that rain can get into it and collect in the pipe. This can cause damage, for example, your clothes coming out of the dryer with a bad smell. Always clean the lint out of your filter.

If any one has any questions please feel free to contact me and I promise to answer you back.

Let me take this opportunity of wishing the editors and staff of ModiInfo, readers, friends and clients and all of Beit Yisrael a Shana Tova, a year of peace, health and only good and an easy absorbtion to all the new olim who have come on Aliyah.

ModiInfo Open HouseBy: Daniella Hellerstein and Caryn Meltz

On Monday, September 19th, ModiInfo held its first open house event featuring guest speakers Deputy Mayors Alex Weinreb and Michael Harlap. Their presentation, as well as the question and answer period, made for a very informative evening. The great variety of people from all over the city, some new and some veteran, made for a very social evening. It was particularly interesting to see the interaction between the deputy mayors as they assisted each other in answering some of the more challenging questions. Deputy Weinreb, a native English speaker equipped with maps and charts of the city, translated for Deputy Harlap, a Hebrew speaker. Together they did their best to explain the rationale behind some of the city’s more confusing ways. Although not every question was met with a completely satisfying answer, the attendees expressed a deep appreciation for having been given the opportunity to speak directly with the deputy mayors. All in all, it was a successful and enjoyable event for the English speaking residents of Modiin.

Below are some of the issues addressed including safety and transportation, religious affairs, education, health and environment, and future projects.

Question: There have been horrific traffic accidents, yet no stop signs or traffic lights are being put in. What is the city waiting for?

Answer: The process for putting in signage and traffic lights is a very long process which must go through the Ministry of Transportation. As a result we continue to put in our requests but it takes time. Once the arnona from the hi-tech comes in then we will be less dependent on the national government for funds.

The police are allowed to temporarily put in stop signs which for example they have near the traffic circle coming into Derech Hashmonaim. In about a month there will be a traffic light on Yitchak Rabin leading to Route 431.

Question: What’s the level of importance in providing services for the residents of Modiin?

Answer: Education is the number one priority. Over 50% of the budget goes towards education. This year there were over 1,000 new students entering gan and school. No other city has that many new students in one year. The city plans to set up a Strategic Committee to decide the level of importance of other areas as well, such as finishing parks, community centers, shuls, etc.

Question: Registration for school and ganim took place in March yet there were ganim that were only built in August. The city knew the numbers were high, why did they wait so long to start building.

Answer: Over 400 children registered for school and gan in the months of July and August! It was not possible for the city to know about these numbers.

Question: Why isn’t there a hospital in Modiin?

Answer: There have to be over 150,000 residents in order for a hospital to be built. We have 70,000 to date.

Question: No matter what we have done, including putting up spikes, we can not get rid of the pigeons? How can we solve the pigeon problem?

Answer: There is no real solution. There is one area in Reut that has an overwhelming problem with pigeons and a vote was taken to bring in a killer squad for pigeons.

Question: What can be done about testing for radon?

Answer: You can purchase a kit for 250 NIS to stick on your wall for three months and then send into the lab to test the radon levels. If the numbers are high there are measures to take to get rid of the radon. Many homes were built with cement mixed with phosphorous materials. Schools are checked every two years for radon instead of the suggested three years.

The city wants to implement laws to kablanim so that they build radon-free buildings and homes.

registered for school in July and August.

Vitamin SupplementsBy: Laurie Ann Sherby

Are you trying to decide whether to take vitamin or mineral supplements? Since certain supplements are dangerous if taken incorrectly and some are available only by prescription, your first stop should be your health care provider. He or she will help assess your needs by speaking to you, asking questions, and perhaps ordering some tests.

If the plan is to make a multivitamin or mineral supplement part of your routine, then you’ll want to get maximum results from whichever supplements you’ve chosen. Not all the experts agree on the perfect way to take supplements, but most concur on some points.

First, it is recommended that vitamin pills or mineral supplements be taken with food. One to two hours after you’ve eaten is still okay. Swallow a pill with a generous amount of liquid. If you take more than one type of supplement, it is recommended that you stagger the dosages, i.e., that you take them at different times of the day (perhaps one at each meal). This could get complicated because of the ingredients of the supplements and the fact that certain supplements should not be taken together.

If, for example, you need to take an iron and a calcium supplement, most experts agree that you

should not take them at the same time. For maximum absorption of the minerals, you should take these separately since they prevent each other from being absorbed completely. You’ll also need to pay attention to what you’ve eaten. If you have consumed a dairy meal or snack, you should wait to take either a calcium or an iron supplement because of absorption interference. Over the counter heartburn remedies often contain dairy ingredients as well.

What is recommended to take with an iron supplement, however, is food or drink containing Vitamin C, such as orange juice. The Vitamin C aids in the absorption of the iron.

Pregnant or nursing women (or women who want to become pregnant) should consult with a health professional to see which supplements are recommended. Folic acid is especially important in the early stages of pregnancy; it is proven to prevent spinal chord problems in newborns.

Vegetarians are often deficient in Vitamin B12, so if you stick to a vegetarian or vegan diet, be sure to speak to a doctor or other health professional about your specific needs.

Another possible conflict could arise when you have to take prescription medication along with vitamins or mineral supplements. Consult with your doctor/provider and/or your pharmacist to make sure that all the

Dear Mothers of Future Bat Mitzvah GirlsBy: Dalia Zack

How time flies! Your daughter is already approaching her bat mitzvah year and in Israel no less! A lot of decisions have to be made – mostly concerning your daughter’s education, as this year she will be choosing a junior high school to attend next year. You might also already be thinking about how to mark her passage into becoming a bat mitzvah. In addition to what might be offered in your daughter’s school to prepare for her bat mitzvah, there is another option offered here in Modiin, which can make you a very special part of her transition into a bat mitzvah.

The Matan Bat Mitzvah Program has been running in Yerushalaim, Raanana, Haifa, Petach Tikva, Kefar Sava, Beit Shemesh and many other cities around the country for a number of years. For the past two years, I have been fortunate to run the Bat Mitzvah Program here in Modiin with girls and mothers from both Netiv Zevulun and Mesuat Neriah schools with great success! Some mothers have joined the program two years running with every bat mitzvah-age daughter.

The program runs for nine weeks during which mothers and daughters meet weekly for a 90-minute evening session. Each week we focus on a different woman in Jewish history – from biblical times (Rivka), until our day and age (Nechama Leibowitz). After a short study session between mother and daughter, we discuss how we can benefit from learning about the woman of the day. All kinds of props and activities are used to help her come to life. (All texts are provided in English as well as Hebrew and the sessions are conducted in basic Hebrew.)

Even after a long day at school, girls and especially their mothers, who are tired after a long day at work, feel that they would not want to miss this special time together – just mother and bat mitzvah girl. One of the benefits that some mothers and daughters found was that the program helped direct them on how to celebrate their upcoming bat mitzvah and encouraged them to connect with the histories of the women in their own families.

This past year I was lucky enough to be able to share the Matan Bat Mitzvah Program with my own daughter. I found that every session brought us closer together so that when the actual Bat Mitzvah arrived I really felt part of her simcha.

A new session of the Matan Bat Mitzvah Program will be starting soon after the Chagim. I would be happy to hear of any interest in the program. Shana Tova!

The Four Species and Sukkot Exhibit at Neot KedumimBy: Beth Uval, Neot Kedumimwhere the world of the Bible comes to live

Sukkot marks the end of Israel’s annual agricultural cycle:

“You shall keep the festival of ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in from the field the fruit of your labor.” (Exodus 23:16) and “You shall keep the feast of sukkot [booths] seven days, when you gather in from your threshing floor and your wine press.” (Deuteronomy 16:13)

On Sukkot, the end of the agricultural year, people could rejoice without trepidation: barley and wheat had been harvested and brought in from the threshing floor for safe storage before the approaching first rains; figs and raisins had been taken in from the rooftops where they were drying in the sun. The olive harvest had begun, and date clusters were ripening on the trees.

“The watchman’s booth in the vineyard and in the field” (Isaiah 1:8) are now left vacant after their temporary use during the intensive months of summer harvest. Yet it is just at this time that Jews

are commanded to celebrate “for seven days … the feast of sukkot to the Lord” (Leviticus 23:34). There is no agricultural need to sit in these temporary booths after the harvest is secure, just as the rainy season is about to start. Surely this is the time to get back into the house in anticipation of the coming rains. The Bible explains that the sitting in sukkot is not connected to the agricultural element of the ingathering of crops, but rather to a historical event.

“… that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt.” (Leviticus 23:43)

What are the four species?

And you shall take on the first day the fruit of a goodly tree, date palm fronds, the branch of a leafy tree, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. (Leviticus 23:40)

Holding the four species together is a kind of “show and tell” of the milestones in the early history of the nation of Israel.

Date palm fronds: Date palms grow in oases in the desert. The fronds are reminders of our 40-year wandering in the Sinai wilderness.

Willows of the brook: Willows grow along the banks of the Jordan River, where the Israelites encamped before crossing into the Promised Land.

The branch of a leafy tree: The “branch of a leafy tree” comes from a tree with dense foliage, similar to the trees in the forest thickets that the Israelites found covering the hill country when they entered the land in the days of Joshua. These thickets had to be cleared before the people of Israel could make the major change from nomadic shepherding to agricultural life. The Sages discussed a number of possible candidates and determined that the “leafy tree” is the myrtle, which still grows abundantly in uncultivated mountainous areas of Israel.

Fruit of a goodly tree: Like the “leafy tree”, the “fruit of a goodly tree” is not identified in the Bible. After much deliberation, the Talmudic Sages determined that it was the etrog (citron). The etrog is difficult to grow in Israel and is a “luxury” crop. It is the only fruit among the Four Species. Its inclusion symbolizes the zenith of agricultural development, when the farmers of Israel were able to spare the time and effort to raise fruit trees for their majesty and beauty.

Sukkot Exhibition at Neot KedumimIs this Sukka kosher?

The rabbis of the Mishna and Talmud ruled on the validity of some 50 kinds of sukkot. The Neot Kedumim staff has constructed life-size models of over 20 of the sukkot discussed by the Sages. The texts debating the validity of each sukka appears beside each model. See if you can tell which sukka is kosher. The answers appear at the bottom of the previous page.

a. “A sukka that is higher than 20 cubits” (Mishna Sukka 2,3)

b. “A sukka on the back of a camel” (Mishna Sukka 2,3)

c. “A sukka on the deck of a ship” (Mishna Sukka 2,3)

d. “A sukka with a grapevine or pumpkin vine trained over it” (Mishna Sukka 1,4)

e. “A sukka on a cart” (Mishna Sukka 2,3)

Vitamins, Continued from page 16

medications and supplements that you take are compatible.

A very annoying problem is when you take, let’s say, a vitamin pill (which can often be large) and it gets stuck in your throat. To eliminate the discomfort and ease the offending pill down, try taking a bite of a banana. Sometimes bread can work, but it has to be chewed more in order to become effective.

Of course, you should ALWAYS keep vitamins,

Why We Live in IsraelBy: Karen Fejbusch

People who don’t know me well often ask me at which stage of my life I decided to make Aliyah - “it was never a decision” is my usual answer - “I always knew that I wanted to live here.”

I came on Aliya nine years ago and throughout that time I’ve experienced countless feelings and emotions that reinforce my feeling of belonging here. The first #18 bus blew up a few months prior to my Aliya. I remember the day well because on that day one of my closest friends (in London) announced her engagement. I was devastated about the news from Jerusalem and was frantically trying to contact my friends who were already living here to make sure they were safe when my friend called to tell me their good news. I rushed over to wish them Mazal Tov but couldn’t help asking my friend why they hadn’t waited a few days, to which she answered, “We thought about it, but life has to go on.” To which I thought, “Not today, it doesn’t.” It was at that moment that I knew without any doubt that I no longer belonged in England. My head and my heart were already here.

I definitely used to be a lot ‘dreamier’ about Israel than I am today. I remember sitting on buses wanting to spend my time looking out of the window at the mountains – romanticizing about our unique and wonderful heritage. The years here have brought me down to earth and I’m far more realistic and practical about life in Israel than I used to be. I’ll never forget that awful Pesach three years ago when the Park Hotel in Netanya was blown to pieces by a suicide bomber. For weeks afterwards I was scared to go anywhere public and honestly considered packing up and moving my family to London. I tried to imagine bringing my kids up there and after some deliberation I realized that we would just be watching the news, waiting like refugees for the right time to come back here. That certainly wasn’t the way I want to live.

I’ve learnt that living in Israel is a package deal – you take the good with the bad. I’m here because every part of life in this country is relevant to me. The story of Israel is my story, and my kids’ ... and their kids’ ... and theirs ...

mineral supplements, and all medications out of the reach of children. We all know that kids can get into places we are sure that they can’t so be especially careful to find dry places out of the sunshine to store your medications and make ABSOLUTELY sure that all the bottles are correctly closed and out of reach of children of all ages. No one disagrees with that advice!
