The environmental Treff is becoming smaller, but also of better qualityTallinn Treff Festival, last-ing from today until Satur-day, is bringing performance arts that are seeking culture and the environment to the viewers.

The slogan of the seventh Treff fes-tival is “Culture saves the world!” Artistic Director Vahur Keller said that this is a clever move to draw attention to our surroundings. By surroundings, the organizers do not only mean greenery and the fear of polluting it, but everything else around us as well. “The envi-ronment doesn’t have to mean nature and forests; it can also be the urban environment,” Keller said. “Treff is still on the streets to reflect on urban spaces and show them as more human-centred.”

Environment alludes to the nature of culture, which every fes-

tival guest should seek out them-selves. “It’s culture in both the specific and the general sense of the word, cultivation,” said Keller. “Creative thinking, finding creative solutions, not routinely smacking your head against the wall and behaving like everybody else.” According to Keller, the festival will be a success if the visitors can avert their eyes from the pavement to the sky even for a second, and see our surroundings from a wider angle and more creatively.

Changes in the theatre, but the festival stays

The past six months have been creatively difficult and pivotal in the Estonian State Puppet Thea-tre as well, in connection with the scandal that erupted in the media and the change of the theatre’s director. According to Keller, the temporary confusion has by now been replaced with an enthusiasm to further both the theatre and the

festival. “The changes that have taken place are primarily financial. The festival will be shorter than, for example, in the 2011th year of the capital of culture, which, I think, is understandable, because back then we had lots of sponsors and our financial opportunities were different,” Keller mused.

According to the organizer, the festival is attempting to offer higher quality, an endeavour helped along by the attention garnered during the previous festivals, which will not need to be desperately fought for anymore. “We are trying to define the whole of Treff more clearly. We used to be a festival of arts, but now we have come out of the closet to represent visual theatre. This is our subject and here we perform.” According to him, this does not mean that there can’t be any art or music, but the days when every willing artist could display their works are over. The programme is put together with more care. “Treff

should be a mark of quality, so that when you enter the hall you can be certain that you will not be pre-sented with garbage,” Keller said.

Mister TreffAccording to Keller, this year’s

festival should feature about 500 performers from both Estonia and foreign countries. Among others, Mister Treff personally has arrived, having assumed a more distinctly human form. Mister Treff has been active on Facebook for the past few weeks, as well as hiding in several places all over the town.

“There is no single person behind Mister Treff. It’s a phenomenon,” festival organizer Kadri Kalda commented on the nature of the new character. There is a whole large organization behind posing as this seeming individual, a group of organizers. Treff and its team hope that visitors will enjoy the festival and that culture will change their world too.

At Köismäe tower, young Seto girls talk about Seto culture being harnessed to the moneymaking cart, and about how it makes them feel while being in the middle of it all.

Taarka Heritage Theatre has been active already since 2006, aiming to ensure, by means of theatre, the survival of Seto culture, develop-ment of the community’s cultural activities, and staging of the plays in the Seto language. While their plays have previously dealt mostly with the history of the Seto com-munity, the play How to Sell a Seto is certainly a glimpse into the present.

Anne Türnpu, the tutor of the youth studio, has discussed the play in an interview given to ETV (the national public television station of Estonia) and said that the Setos are living in the present world, not in an ethnographical one, and that is the reason why theatre must express the concerns that accompany them at the pres-

ent moment. That is exactly what these brave girls on stage offer to the audience.

The actors of the youth studio tell everything that they have on their mind about Setomaa and Seto culture during one hour and 15 minutes. The topics are serious, honest, and painful. How far can people go with the exchange of

their traditions and sacred places for money? How to avoid the spread of false perceptions of your culture and their reproduction?

The Setos have recently been depicted both on screen and on stage, yet the conception of the Setos’ nature that has been conctructed by the bystander does not conicide with the self-image of the ones being portrayed. The tra-ditional Muhu skirt pattern dec-orates everything from sneakers made in China to fridge magnets; Seto leelo (Seto polyphonic sing-ing tradition) has been used in a new TV advert of white bread in the same arbitrary manner. Who, if anyone, has the right to do this? The play provides food for thought as abundantly as the grains of sand that are used in the set design.

Thursday’s program has been com-piled with the help of the embassy of the Czech Republic. Anima-tions by the veteran of the trade, Jiřķ Trnka, will be presented. An exposition dedicated to the crea-tions of Trnka was opened for the duration of the summer yesterday in the cafe of the Estonian State Puppet Theatre.

Animated films that will be shown, are: „Vanaisa istutas peedi“ [Grandfather Planted a Beet] (1945; 9:56), „Kirg“ [Passion] (1962; 8:37), and „Käsi“ [Hand] (1965; 17:59). The latter criticizes restrictions imposed on art by a totalitarian regime, and showing it in Czechosloviakia was forbidden for twenty years.

The compiler of the program Kadri Kalda dares to promise: “The second night will be especially great! We will show a part of the famed Finnish festival Animat-ricks’ program, which has been curated by Ami Lindholm.” Lind-holm will be visiting Treff as well

and will introduce the films before the screening. The films are Finnish and deal with the topic of Family – “Kes karjub sulle kõrva? Kuus filmi perekonnast” [Who Shouts in Your Ear? Six Films about Family].

Presented will be: „Viimane ele-vant“ [The Last Elephant] (2008) author Antti Laakso, „Aurora“ (2008) author Anne Savitie, aut-hors Elina Kylmänen’s, Kari Pies-kä’s & Tapani Tolonen’s animation

„Üle ja ümber“ [Over and Around] (2012), Milla Nybondas’ „Perekon-nalamp“ [The Lamp of the Family] (2008), „Munaralli“ [Egg Race] by Kaisa Penttilä (2009) and the crea-tion of Michael Dudok de Wit, „Isa ja tütar“ [Father and Daughter] (2000).

The Finnish film program was initiated by Kadri Kalda as well, who became acquainted with the world of animated film while

studying in Finland. Kalda says that she is proud of the cultural creations of Finland and takes upon herself the task to spread it in Estonia as much as possible.

All who can keep their eyes open are welcome to the Köismäe tower on two midnights. The film prog-ram is free.

This year’s Treff places great emphasis on young actors who have come back to Estonia within the Bring Talent Home program. It is possible to get acquainted with two talented actors on this very page.

On two consecutive mornings, I had a chance to meet with two tal-ented puppeteers, both of whom have recently returned to Estonia from studying abroad. Mirko Rajas (25) graduated from the Turku Arts Academy in puppetry and Mart Müürisepp (22) went to the International Marionette Institute in France.

To begin with, describe your study abroad experience. How was it?

Mirko: I kept missing Tallinn all the time and thought so much about how and when I can return

to Estonia! Sometimes that also took the focus away from my stud-ies. However, Turku is a great city to study in; it reminds me of Tartu. There are less distractions that would get your attention, hence I managed to graduate in three years (instead of four) and it wasn’t that difficult at all.

Mart: My studies in Charlev-ille lasted for three months, out of which I spent about a month there on the spot. Although it was an extremely inspiring experience, I’m happy to be here and to do my own thing instead of studying in France or at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

It may seem, especially in Estonia, that it’s impossible for an actor to work in thea-tre without academic train-ing; yet we have lately wit-nessed that there are many such young actors making a name for themselves on our cultural scene. Do you think

that formal education is par-amount for an actor?

Mirko: To some people it can be of great importance to have a doc-ument that proves that they are fit for stage. On the other hand, I don’t think that a document of academic schooling is important if one has enough teachers and opportuni-ties through different projects to develop their skills.

Mart: I think that a document may be deceitful. It is more impor-tant how one can prove himself on stage. As I grew up with theatre, I just strive to perform well. Theatre has become my lifestyle, I breathe and love theatre. I know that I learn a lot through practise. For exam-ple, my first real experience with puppet theatre was Metamorphosis where I worked alongside Mirko and that taught me a lot.

Mirko: At the same time I can say that I’ve learned a lot from Mart. Our cooperation went well and hopefully we can work together more in the future.

But why is puppet theatre the best genre for you?

Mart: It’s a very cool medium which doesn’t exclude acting skills, although I’m aware that people might be prejudiced. We don’t have different words like puppet and doll in Estonian, we only have doll, and some people think that puppeteers are just having fun with dolls. As there is a wider range of possibili-ties than it’s usually thought, I’d like to cultivate more interest towards puppet theatre among the adult audience as well.

Mirko: For me, being a pup-peteer is partly a coincidence. I studied at a theatre class in high school because other possibilities just didn’t attract me so much. Since Tallinn was the European Capital of Culture for the year 2011 and that was also the year I was finished high school, NUKU sent me, among others who got chosen, to study in Turku. It gave me much security to know that I

have a job waiting for me at NUKU after graduation.

Where and when can we enjoy your creation during Treff?

Mart: I participate in Duda Paiva Company’s Bestiaires that is based on Greek mythology. It tells the story of how Greek gods come to help out their people during the economic crisis. Their solution is to earn money by staging a play. They go on a tour with it and travel around the world in a people car-rier. We’ll perform Bestiaires today at 13:00 and 19:00.

Mirko: My play Morrison and the Four Seasons will be performed

tomorrow at 11.30 and 14.00 at NUKU Oval hall. It’s a children’s play about how a boy meets the personified Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. I also staged it in Ljubljana, Slovenia in January and February this year.

So what will happen after Treff? What’s next for you?

Mirko: I am going to stage a play based on the novel A Cool Million by Nathanael West. It is aimed at adult audience and will premiere on 16 November.

Mart: we will see what life brings.

Kaunas State Puppet Thea-tre’s play Towards the Sun creates patterns of thought with two alternating worlds and the music of Gorillaz.

Two unnamed violinists living in a railway station tell the audience a story that makes two worlds alter-nate on the stage: the present real-ity of the story’s narrator and rec-ollections opening up in his mind of a travelling circus to which the musician is connected through a shared past.

With violins playing in the background, we are introduced to various artists (an accordion-ist, a tightrope walker, an animal trainer, a magician, etc.) whose

talents come across as incom-petence as long as they have no love interests to inspire them to self-fulfilment. The desire for intimacy is the key to overcom-ing fears and accomplishing the impossible. It can tame even a wild

gorilla, now swaying complacently to the sounds of violins and hap-pily letting his back be scratched. The play’s occasional air of mel-ancholy is relieved by the lighter tones the self-irony and situa-tional comedy of the characters.

The infrequent text of the per-formance is mostly presented as songs, and paying close attention to the characters and making connections helps understand the story. This allows for differ-ent interpretations, but viewers are treated on an equal footing as there is no use of overly compli-cated intertextuality, which should make the play comprehensible to everyone. A smile is, however, brought to my face by being famil-iar with the works of Gorillaz. The constantly alternating short scenes of the story are loosely tied together into a meaningful whole. More than a few questions are left unanswered, but echoes of the hope that somewhere there is a sun for everyone to reach for can be heard in the air.

The adventures of an egg-carton chicken family

Estonian State Puppet The-atre Egg box Dummies is a puppet show for the young-est theatre visitors, which also serves wonderfully as the first introduction to (puppet) theatre as well.

The child-friendly show lasts for half an hour in a hall where a free and safe atmosphere is created. The strange title does not, how-ever, point to the story, but to the puppets themselves – namely, the hand-puppets are made from empty egg cartons.

On a colorful screen, children will be presented with the adven-tures of a chick, who decides to take a walk in the woods and is then chased by foxes. The easily recognizable chase scene between the weaker and the stronger instills feelings of justice and compassion in the young audience: they them-selves can help achieve the happy ending and together the foxes will be scared to the depths of the for-est. The chick will return healthy to the worried mother hen and the roosters who had been fightning in the beginning of the story will make peace.

“No more fighting!”, “It is impor-tant to be brave and clever!” – these resounding thoughts definitely

belong to a growing child’s emo-tional toolkit.

The play also has its own little theatre-introducing function. The screens will shift several times to reveal the backdrops of the puppet show. The actor creates a rooster puppet from a glove on their hand and from various other parts right in front of the audience, discusses it with children and even puts on dif-ferent masks for the finished pup-

pet – the disguising of the charac-ter into another creates a fun “the-atre in a theatre” effect. On a few occasions the actors will stick their heads out from behind the screen and explain to the children, just in case, what exactly is happening in the story right now. The children are encouraged to engage in other ways and to speak along as well, which does not let the attention of the little spectator dissipate.

Today, the environment-friendly idea of this show is especially wel-come – quality hand-puppets are created with very handy materials that have been recycled, and it is easy to replicate them at home. The ability to play and indulge in a world of one’s own creation is not at all as self-evident as one would think – teaching this is the puppet theatre’s main endeavor.

On meaning and meaninglessnessThe ones who have seen Detox the Dummy by Esto-nian State Puppet Theatre, or remember Stan which was performed during last year’s Treff, should recognise the name Jim Barnard when taking a look at this year’s programme. The British pup-peteer and director has writ-ten yet another play, Sticky, which is once again chiefly aimed at adult audience.

The play, in which even the four performers are surprised to find themselves in, weaves together loosely connected fragments, and thereby does not offer a story to keep track of. Although the actors find themselves subjected to the performance and cannot form it into a logical and cohesive whole, one can notice a trichotomy of form and content when the scenes change on stage.

First of all, the show does con-tain elements that are characteristic to puppet theatre – the body of the eponymous puppet is literally put together of different parts by using adhesive tape. The tape itself is of no meaning, a mere backing mate-rial; the body that has been created by using it will only live and exist until the actors’ hands hold it in one piece. These scenes of build-ing up and tearing down, giving meaning and losing it, are the parts that form the play into a whole. The ones who remember Polina Boriss-ova’s (France) Go!, will recognise the inventive way of drawing on the wall with adhesive tape.

Secondly, numerous scenes about dying and no longer working relationships between two people have been staged. However, there is no need to be afraid of a relation-ship drama similar to psychologi-cal realism: these scenes are mainly experiments in form. For exam-ple, people communicate with each other using only sentence fragments, or no words at all. The director seems particularly fasci-nated by wordplays this time – the sentences are being dismantled into syllables and distributed between the speakers, completely arbitrary

connections and constructions of thought are being formed, and the speech shifts between Estonian and English. Language as a system of denoting meaning loses its func-tion and at times even withdraws into glossolalia.

The most significant part of the play is concerned with theatre and the genre itself. The characters try to solve the situation in which they find themselves in by using prior knowledge about what a play should be like, and the the way of expressing uncertainly is amus-ingly connected with Estonian

State Puppet Theatre itself: while trying to define the performance that is in progress, they refer to the theatre’s repertoire and team. The play which causes confusion and has no linear narrative forces the actors to admit: This is crap! The frequent self-references and comments give the impression that this is a performance by a puppet theatre about a puppet theatre performance.

Although no linear story nor idea is presented to the audience, the scenes of different form and content are related with each

other by the theme of a failed attempt to create something. The puppeteer’s hands will eventually lose their grip and the puppet falls into pieces; the sentences and words become mere sounds; every sensation and thought finally fades into the void. Nev-ertheless, pessimistic mood does not dominate – the chain of being and disappearing rather empha-sises the law of creation, in which meanings can indeed be ambiva-lent and emerge only in order to disappear, thus making room for new ones.

Ahoi rahvas!

Klubist - suurim muudatus tänavu on, et klubi on meie enda Õuesaalis, seega väga mugav ja lähedal... Sissepääs on Nunne tänava poolsest vära-vast või Nukumajast. Peale ühtteist õhtul suleme värava ja sisse pääseb läbi Nuku!

Klubi alustab festivali eelõhtul, laval on Nuku bänd JDM. Miks alustame varem? Sest paljud meie külalistest saabuvad juba varakult ja 5nda õhtul on Nukus ka esietendus - “Kleepur”. Tähistame saabuvat festivaliaega ja esietendust! Anname nn. varajase avalöögi!

Väga hää meel on, et klubis on tänavu palju häid ja juba tunnustatud muusikuid ja koosseise aga ka värskemat verd kuulda-näha. Programm on mitmekesine ja kõrvupaitav! Saab kuulda jääääzzzi ja ka rokki, nautida imelist vokaali ja vapustavaid instrumentaliste. Samuti on kohal linna parimad plaadikeerutajad!!!

Seitsmenda juuni õhtul oleme aga täises koosseisus palutud Krahli teatrisse ja toimub üritus “Treff goes to Krahl”! - see on vägev koostöö, mis sai alguse juba kevadel. Lavale astub Fankadelik All Stars ja hiljem saab kuulda, millist muusikat armastavad Kelgukoerad Kõrs ja Pullerits ja meiega ühineb ka “Kleepuri” lavastaja Jimmy!

Alustame taas Kuklitantsuga!Kahe kukli ja kahvliga tantsitav „Kuklitants” on algselt pärit

Charlie Chaplini legendaarsest filmist „Kullapalavik” ja seda vai-mukat numbrit on kasutatud ka NUKU teatri lavastustes „Nuku-mängu ABC” ja „Nukumäng on imelihtne”.

Aasta tagasi osales Treff festivali avatantsul üle 60 inimese, sel aastal ootame osalema kuni sadat kuklitantsijat! Kuklitants toimub pärast festivali avarongkäiku Raekoja platsil. Osalema on oodatud igas vanuses nukukunstihuvilised nii üksikult kui ka kambakesi! Vaja läheb vaid kahte kahvlit ning kuklit, paari proovi Youtube’ist leitava õppevideo järgi ning tants võib alata!

Kui tahad kaasa lüüa, siis:1. Vaata „Kuklitantsu“ õppevideot, mille leiad Youtube’ist ja siitsamast

kodulehelt, ja harjuta tants kodus selgeks;2. Tule 6. juunil 2013 kell 17.45 oma kuklite ja kahvlitega Nukuteatri
