John the Baptist Beheaded

H erod Antipas smiled and nodded with approval. His step-daughter Salome swayed and twirled in

front of him and his birthday-party guests, her graceful figure filling them with long-ing. Her performance done, Herod and the guests applauded. What a dance! In-flamed by his senses and the mood of the moment, Herod cried, "Ask me what you want--up to half my kingdom--and it is yours!" And he swore a great oath to con-firm his promise. As a Tetrarch (ruler of one quarter of a Roman province) Herod was more than able to provide a handsome gift even by first century standards. Would Salome ask for a jeweled necklace? A dowry? A house? Herod and the guests waited to hear her request. The girl herself hesitat-ed. Uncertain what to ask for, she whis-pered with her mother. Down in the dungeons of Herod's fortress (named Machaerus) a man's fate was about to be decided. John the Baptizer was under lock and key in one of those gloomy holds. The cause was this: he had rebuked Herod for stealing another man's wife--Herodias. This woman had been married to Herod's quiet half-brother, Phillip. Herodias was furious, and convinced Herod to arrest John. Herod was only too willing; he was suspicious of the large crowds John attracted. However, once Herod got John in his lockup, he talked with him and found he liked the guy. He didn't understand what John was saying about holiness and salvation, but it seemed to be some-thing he should hear. Instead of executing John, he gave him visitation privileges. Execution would be a bad idea, anyway: John had a lot of followers; why make them mad and risk rebellion?

Salome approached Herod. Evident-ly she had made up her mind. The guests and the king turned to hear what she would ask. "Give me now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter!" said the girl. Even that reckless, hardened lot must have drawn sharp breaths at the gruesome re-quest. How quickly the indulgent mood melted. Did Herod's face change? Here was an awkward de-mand! Used to think-ing of people as ob-jects, used to behead-ing men at a whim, it never occurred to him to say, "An incor-ruptible prophet like John the Baptizer is worth more than my whole kingdom." Looking around at his guests, he saw only one thing. If he was to save face, he must fulfill his promise. He or-dered the execution. According to a long-standing tradition, John was beheaded on this day, August 29 (Julian calendar—September 11), probably around the year A.D. 28. What happened to John's head, we do not know. His disciples came and bur-ied the body. Remains alleged to be his were later taken to Alexandria, Egypt and placed in a specially built church. When John's cousin Jesus heard the news, it hit him as hard as it would any of us. He tried to get away by himself for a time. John, who had preached Christ's coming and prepared for his messianic ministry was needlessly dead in the prime of his life. We have no sure knowledge of Sa-lome's fate. Що виправдало Фінееса? Хіба не справедливий гнів на розпусників? Він був надто людинолюбний та лагідний, але коли побачив блуд, що його так нахабно коїв Зімрі із мадіянкою, навіть не намагаючись приховати сороміцтва, то не стримався й у справедливому гніві простромив обох стрілою (Чис. 25, 8). А Самуїл, охоплений праведним гнівом, хіба не вбив амаликітського царя Агага, що його врятував всупереч Божому повелінню Саул (1 Сам. 15,

33)? Так роздратування нерідко прислуговується добрим справам. І ревний Ілля, охоплений розсудливим і праведним гнівом, приніс користь усьому Ізраїлю, прирікши на смерть чотириста п’ятдесят ганебних священиків і чотириста священиків з дібров, котрі годувалися зі столу Єзавелі (1 Цар. 18, 22-40). А ти без причини гніваєшся на свого брата. Хіба не марним буває гнів, коли один скоїв щось, а ти гніваєшся на іншого? Хіба не те ж саме робиш, що й пси, які гризуть камінь і не чіпають людини, котра кинула той камінь? Гідний жалю той, кого використали як знаряддя, але ненависним є сам діяч. На нього гнівайся – на людиновбивцю, батька

брехні, призвідця гріха. А до брата вияви милосердя, бо якщо він не покине грішити, то разом з дияволом буде горіти у вічному вогні. Наскільки різняться поміж собою слова «роздратування» та «гнів», настільки відрізняються поняття, які вони позначають. Бо роздратування – це неначе спалах і швидке випаровування пристрасти, а гнів – постійна скорбота і тривале прагнення відплатити кривдникові, коли душа неначе наливається помстою. Тому треба знати, що люди, перебуваючи в різному душевному стані, грішать у двох випадках: або несамовито й безумно кидаються на кривдників, або підступно та зловмисно розставляють тенета, у які сподіваються вловити кривдників. Ми мусимо остерігатися і того, й іншого. 7. Що ж треба робити, щоб пристрасть була доречною? Як це можливо? Спочатку навчись мудрої смиренности, що її Господь і на словах заповів, і наділі показав. Заповів [словом], коли сказав: Коли хто хоче бути першим, нехай буде з усіх останнім (Мр. 9, 35), а ділами показав, коли лагідно й незворушно стерпів удар від людини (Йо. 18, 22-23). Творець неба й землі, Якому служать зі страхом усі створіння видимі й невидимі, Який підтримує усе могутнім своїм словом (Євр. 1, 3), не вкинув цього чоловіка живим до пекла, не звелів землі провалитися під нечестивцем, але перестеріг і повчав його: Коли Я зле сказав, то доведи, що воно зле, якщо ж добре, то чому Мене б’єш? розсмієшся? І коли безумець насміхається з тебе, то хіба не пожалієш його замість того, щоб зненавидіти? Зазвичай засмучують нас не слова, а презирство до кривдника і власна зарозумілість. Тому, якщо ці дві речі не зачіпатимуть тебе, то образливі слова стануть для тебе пустопорожніми звуками. Отож: Утримайся від гніву і погамуй лють (Пс. 36, 8), щоб не відчути на собі гніву, якийвідкривається з небес на всяку безбожність і несправедливість людську (Рим. 1, 18). Якщо ти подужаєш силами доброчесного розуму виполоти з коренем роздратування, то цим завдаси нищівного удару відразу багатьом пристрастям, поки вони ще в зародку. Підступність, підозрілість, недовіра, лиха вдача, зловмисність, зухвалість і подібні їм пороки – діти цього гріха.

Тому не дозволимо поселитися в нас такому великому злу – цій душевній хворобі, потьмаренню розуму, відчуженню від Бога, забуттю кровних уз, призвідникові битв, джерелу лих, цьому лукавому демонові, що оволодіває нашими душами, подібно до докучливого паразита, що оселився в нутрощах і перешкоджає ввійти Святому Духові. Бо: де ворожнеча, сварки, лють, суперечки, суперництво, які розбурхують душу, там немає місця Духові лагідности. Але, послухавшись напоумлень блаженного Павла, відкиньмо гнів, лють та крики, станьмо добрими та милосердними одне до одного в надії на блаженство, обіцяне лагідним (адже блаженні лагідні, бо вони успадкують землю (Мт. 5, 4), в Христі Ісусі Господі нашім, Якому слава й влада навіки! Амінь.

Praying the Gospel Lectio Divina

Lectio Divina is a Latin expression that

means “divine or sacred reading.” It consists of reading a passage from scripture, reflection and prayer. The process of reading and reflecting is a prayer. The scripture passages in this case are chosen from the Byzantine Gospel Lectionary

as used in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Re-flections will be chosen from various sources and identified as used.

Praying Lectio Today

Relax your body and sit straight, eyes

shut and feet on the floor. Then practice the fol-lowing four simple steps:

Read the assigned scripture passage and then read the brief reflection assigned to the passage you have read. Lectio.

Pray the passage by looking for a specific meaning that comes to mind as you read it again. Meditatio. Pick a word or sentence or idea that sur-

faces from the text. Perhaps the reading reminds you of a person, place or experience. If so pray about it. Compose your thoughts into a simple word or phrase. Oratio.

In silence, with eyes closed, focus on your breathing. Let your thoughts and feelings fade as you consider the images from the previ-ous step. Contemplatio.

This exercise may take 10 to 20 minutes.

The Fifteenth Week after Pentecost

This week we pray with selections taken mostly from the gospel of St Mark. All these passages are extracts from the Byzantine lectionary which is read in full at the Divine Liturgy during the week. I have selected an abbreviated selection from each for the purpose of prayer and reflection.

Monday 7th

September (Mark 5:24b-34) Reflection The story of a nameless woman who has exhausted her resources seeking medical treatment for a chronic condition strikes a responsive chord with many older adults today. When they were younger, doctors seemed able to provide cures. Now these persons seem to have an ever-expanding list of medical complaints. As one man in his seventies put it, “After a certain age, you are never really well. Just less sick.” The financial drain and emotional difficulty of dealing with the bureaucratic, impersonal, and compartmental-ized medical establishment compound the difficulty.

Tuesday 8th

September (Mark 6:1-7)

Reflection Many people are surprised by this story. They think that the people who know Jesus best should have been the first to follow him. Yet they also know human experiences of rejection when attempts to reach out and help family members are rebuffed. People who are able to help others solve com-plicated personal problems are helpless when their own children are in trou-ble.

Wednesday 9th

September (Mark 6:7-13)

Reflection The variations in the rules for missionaries show that the earliest Christians recognized the need to adapt to the circumstances in which they found themselves. The important point made by the early rules takes a very differ-ent turn when we think about Christian missions today. The principal that the gospel comes to bring healing, peace, and good news to people means that missionaries must adapt to the culture of those they come to serve. They are not agents of colonialism or political expansion.

th September (Mark 6:30-45)

Reflection This passage begins with Jesus expressing compassion for the crowd. Teaching and feeding show that Jesus is the shepherd. Some think that the social ministries of the Church are all that is necessary to make Christ pre-sent in the world. Ohers think that the Church should have nothing to do with feeding and healing except when it is necessary to help someone in the local community. There is no Christianity without proclaiming the gospel. Teaching and learning the Word of God are as essential to faith as are prayer and belonging to a Christian community. Friday 11

th September (Mark 6:45-53)

Reflection The disciples’ consistent failure to understand who Jesus is seems perplex-ing. A similar situation can occur to anyone. We discover that our grasp of something that we know well is not as secure as we thought. It may take a crisis to determine where our real priorities lie. We face the challenge of constantly overcoming our hardheartedness and disbelief. Our disbelief has less to do with the anticipation that God will do miracles than with the sus-picion that perhaps life would be just the same even if we did not put out the effort to be active members of the Christian community. th September (Matt 24:1-13)

Reflection The discourse moves to a focus on what the community itself has to endure. Some of this trouble comes from outside in the shape of persecution and ha-tred, leading even to death. More poignant, however, in a way Matthew par-ticularly emphasises, is the suffering caused from within: intra-community

betrayal, false prophecy, and the “increase of lawlessness” that will cause “the love of many to grow cold.” Matthew has a keen sense of the Church as a less than perfect body. Faced as we are today with so much evidence of moral failure within the Church, we can be grateful that Matthew so ex-plicitly built inner-ecclesial failure into his depiction of the trials the com-munity would endure before the full arrival of the kingdom.

and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ 37He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” 38This is the greatest and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’ The Question about David’s Son 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42‘What do you think of the Messiah?* Whose son is he?’ They said to him, ‘The son of David.’ 43He said to them, ‘How is it then that Da-vid by the Spirit* calls him Lord, saying, 44 “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet’ ”? 45If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?’ 46No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Matt 22:35-46 Reflection Jesus reaches here for a radical unity in the two commandments. To love God with all one’s heart and soul and mind (that is, with one’s whole being and life-energy) is inseparable from an active love of those whom God loves in the way God loves them, that is, with a love that is compassionate and extends even to the hostile. Jesus makes love the criterion and the key for interpreting all the other requirements of the Law.
