But the 20thcentury was the first to place the Bardscollection of plays on the silver screen inmovies ranging from Orson Welles starkadaptation of Othello to MichaelAlmereydas corporate retelling of Hamlet.One of the most popular modern renditionsof a Shakespearean work is West Side Story,the musical reworking of Romeo and Juliet,which area residents will have the opportu-nity to see on the big screen at the LandisTheater Thursday evening at 7:30. Originally a successful Broadway musi-cal, West Side Story first captured the imag-ination of theater audiences in the late1950s with a recognizable story of two star-crossed lovers whose inter-racial relation-ship delivers a challenge to the bigotry thatplagued much of the country at that time.It featured a score composed by LeonardBernstein with lyrics by a young StephenSondheim whose own career on the GreatWhite Way would revolutionize musicaltheater over the next few decades.Unlike the current roster of movie stu-dios, which largely tends to shun film adap-tations of popular Broadway fare, theHollywood of yore was more than happy topillage hit plays and musicals that drewaudiences to the New York City theater dis-trict nightly. By 1961, West Side Story wasreadied for its onscreen transfer and a cast,including Natalie Wood as Maria andRichard Beymer as Tony, was assembledfor a United Artists release. Upon its pre-miere in October that year, it met withapproval from both critics and the publicwho approved of the cinematic treatment. The film begins with an overture thatprovides a sampling of the score before set-ting the mood through a mostly wordlessopening of aerial shots of New York Citylandmarks and an exposition in ballet tointroduce the rival street gangs, the Jetsand the Sharks. Their outward swagger andplayful taunting masks a seething hatredand insecurity over the issues of territory,race and pride, all of which can be as lethalas the tenacity of Shakespeares feudingfamilies, the Montagues and the Capulets. As the modern-day Romeo and Juliet,Tony and Maria confront a different set ofconflicts played out against an urban back-drop of street thugposturing and threat-ened violence thatsoon become all tooreal. The story here istold through inter-twined dialogue, songand dance that weavethe protagonists des-tiny like the mythological Fates.
