CAMBRIAN SLATEA minimum of 60% recycled Welsh Slate means Cambrian weathers like natural slate

The first projects using Cambrian Slate werecompleted back in 1985. At the time, the introductionof Cambrian was heralded as a major step forward forembracing the principles of recycling natural slate anda new fixing method for roofing, leading to a covetedQueens Award for Technological Achievement in 1991.The success of Cambrian since proves that the earlyadopters were right in using a modern andrevolutionary approach to roofing products.

Cambrian Slates combine the beauty of natural slate, with a robust manufacturing process, which providesenhanced performance, and a product that weathersnaturally to deliver an aesthetic equalled only by itsnatural counterpart. Made in Wales using a minimum of 60% recycled Ffestiniog slate, and with acomprehensive 15 year Redland Roof SystemGuarantee, its attractiveness and lightweight benefitstranslate in many ways, across a wide number ofcontrasting building types. On the succeeding pages we showcase flagship projects, that highlight howCambrian Slate contributes across the builtenvironment from public sector re-roofing of existinghousing stock to private new build, schools, retail and hospitals. Many of the accompanying examplesincorporate specific elements that make up the wholeroofing package, including ridge and hip systems thatallow a finer roofing aesthetic.

WEATHERING WELLCambrian now has a 25 year history of installation in a wide variety of applications from office buildings,to re-roofing of public sector housing stock, to highend private housing and MOD sites across the UK.Due to its high natural slate content in manufacture, ithas aged in the same way as its natural counterpart todeliver an aesthetic that has improved with time. Theexample to the right, in Chessington, Surrey, showsCambrian fixed approximately10 years ago on a selfbuild refurbishment. Easy to fix, the Cambrian roof hasweathered just like its natural slate counterpart onthe front porch and adjacent property.

LOW PITCH, GUARANTEED PERFORMANCECambrian was developed to overcome some veryspecific problems that natural slate products cannot. The interlocking design and unique three point fixingallows application to the lowest angle of roof pitch and is guaranteed to perform on roofs as low as 15°.

Extensive wind tunnel and durability testing duringdevelopment also provides numerous security featuressuch as protected nail holes, allowing use on even themost exposed sites. In addition, Redland’s dry-fixaccessories range provides further security, and theadded benefit of a 15 Year Guarantee applicable to thecomplete roof system.

A fine example was completed at YstradgynlaisCommunity Hospital in Powys, where 6,500 squaremetres of Cambrian Slate Grey was used to re-roofthe whole of the complex. Natural Welsh slate wasdismissed as it couldn’t be guaranteed to perform atthe hospital roof’s lowest 17.5° angle of pitch, whereasCambrian, produced locally at Redland’s plant inRassau, offered both the looks and performancerequired. Redland’s dry-fix Rapid Vented Ridge andRapid Hip systems were used as part of thespecification, reducing the re-roofing time by 20%.

“This was not a straightforward replacement of the roof, the solution requiring widespread changes to the details indesign. The Redland guarantee ensures the specificationmet all Building Regulations and covered our design liabilityfor the roof.”

SIR JOHN WESLEY SCHOOLUsing the most eco friendly A-rated resinslates availableA shining example of roofing forthe education marketplace is thenew nursery and classroombuildings at a voluntary-aidedprimary school in Ashford, Kent.Diocesan Architectural Servicesspecified the subtle Heathercoloured slates to provide a boldand sympathetic roof. Heather isjust one of three colours in theCambrian range, the others beingLangdale Green and Slate Grey, designed to reflect the regionalcolours associated withindigenous, quarried slate. Aswith all new education buildings, the decision to use the productwas helped by its ‘A’ rating in theBRE Green Guide to Specification2008. The signature part of thedesign is the nursery roof, whichhas a central turreted featureinterfacing traditional designwithin a modern structure.

CATTERICK GARRISONRe-roofing against the elements

Catterick Garrison has served the armed forces for nearly onehundred years and much of itshousing stock was built in theinter and post war period. As part of its long term refurbishmentprogramme, MODern HousingSolutions, a consortium ofCarillion plc and Enterprise plccontracted by Defence EstatesOperations Housing (DE), choseCambrian slates to re-roof 120dwellings within the town. MHS are committed to ensuring a better service through improvedquality of workmanship andexecution, along with an eye on the importance of good quality housing.

The interlocking Cambrian Slatescombine the authentic naturalappearance of a traditional slateroof with guaranteed performancethat comes from precisionmanufacturing techniques. Theyreplaced the original fibre-cementslates, upgrading the roofs in theprocess by offering a combinationof dressed edges, random rivensurfaces and a thin leading edge.Cambrian’s light weight was amajor factor in the specification, meaning no modificationswere required to the existingroof structure.

Cambrian, and Redland’sassociated roof system, wastherefore specified to enhance the

roof aesthetics but also to ensurepotential maintenance issues werereduced, and form part of animprovement to living conditionsgenerally. The dry-fix specificationgives the ageing housing stock anew lease of life and is covered bythe Redland 15 year Roof SystemGuarantee. The solutionincorporates the Rapid Range, which provides maintenance freeweather-tight high-level ventilation, alongside a breathing roof systemusing Spirtech 250 vapourpermeable membrane, rather thanconventional underlay.

The finished site bears testamentto Cambrian delivering atraditional roof upgraded to meetall of the latest building regulationsand extends the useful life of wellbuilt housing stock.

“The roofing has helped to inject anew lease of life into our forces’family homes.”

SALFORD REGENERATIONAward winning Pathfinder Scheme

Affordable housing in inner cityareas has been one of the maindrivers for new public and privateprojects over the past few years. Many areas have experiencedsevere population loss, housingmarket decline and failure, contributing to deprivation, poorquality housing and low levels ofowner occupation. As part of thewider Manchester SalfordPathfinder, and receiving fundingfrom the Housing Market RenewalProgramme, one of the largestschemes to help reverse this trendis the Higher Broughton/BroughtonGreen regeneration schemecompleted over a period of sevenyears in 2009.

The phased project, covering over30 acres, includes around 700 unitsof mixed style affordable housing, using innovative constructionmethods, high quality materials and architecturally led design byChurch Lukas Limited. This isexemplified by the widespread useof Redland’s Cambrian slates, withdry-fix solutions for verge and
