Andrew Chapel UMW Meeting
June 13, 2013 Debbie Snyder, president, called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm and presented all in attendance a copy of UMW purpose to recite:
UMW Purpose The organized unit of the United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
Eileen presented program with Parable of the Rich Fool found in Luke 12:12-‐21. Life is more than material goods: far more important is our relationship with God. Jesus says that the good life has nothing to do with being wealthy, so be on guard against greed. Think about sharing your wealth with God’s kingdom. Faith, service and obedience are the way to become rich toward God. Have a correct attitude toward the accumulation of wealth. May minutes were read and approved. Birthday-‐collected $4.50 Treasurer Report: Eileen Greene reported a balance $2854.06 after disbursements and deposits. Eileen asked about active and inactive members on the membership role. The definition of membership should be found in the UMW Constitution. Debbie said there was work being done on changing some issues in the UMW Constitution. She will inquire about obtaining a new Constitution and review changes regarding member status. District Treasure Report: Lorita Shelton reported a balance of $631.95. Card Report: Mary Williard reported sending out 4 cards in June. Old Business:
Treasurer Sale: proceeds $266.55. After discussion as to use of proceeds from the sale; a motion was approved to use the proceeds to pay for the cleaning of the carpets in the sanctuary, office and fellowship hall. The cost of carpet cleaning was $280.14. New Business:
Eileen made a motion that UMW send a sympathy card to the family of Barbara Corley; 2nd by Debbie Snyder, motion approved. Mrs. Corley will be missed. She created beautiful afghans for the annual Fall Festival.
Debbie Snyder made motion to reimburse UMW treasurer for flowers sent to Peggy Timmons; 2nd by Carolyn, motion was approved. Peggy recently had a hip replacement surgery. Debbie reminded everyone that she is placing a copy of the Response Magazine in the fellowship hall to share. Please take the time to read the stories of the UMW missions throughout the country and world. Eileen closed the meeting with a reading of Micah 6:8: He hath shown thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? The UMW will not meet in July. The next meeting will be Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 7:00 pm. All ladies are invited to attend. Submitted by Carolyn Fleming, Secretary
SCOUTING NEWS
Another Month has arrived and I am proud to report that Troop 516 is doing exceptionally well and continues to be extremely active in many Scouting activities. Over the past couple of months, let me just give you a few examples of the wonderful things our Troop is accomplishing. On 27 April and on 8 June, Boy Scouts Brendon C. and Daniel S. earned their prestigious Boy Scout Eagle Scout award which they received during 2 very well attended Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremonies, the first ones for this year. This is a major achievement in a Scout’s life and only 1% of all Scouts who start Scouting ever reach this pinnacle award. Troop 516 is very blessed with having many exceptional Scouts as well as numerous Eagle Scouts; a few more of which are working towards this Eagle Scout achievement. On 14 June, Scout Alex F. became the Troop's 3rd Eagle Scout this year when he passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review. Alex will be officially recognized at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor at a later date. Congratulations to Brendon, Daniel, Alex and each of these very fine Scouts parents for an amazing achievement.
Troop 516 also has 3 Troop members (Matthew A., Mitchell A. and Nick B.) who are very actively pursuing their Eagle Scout award by planning, preparing and executing their mandatory final Eagle project. This event is a major milestone for any Eagle Scout and directly reflects on the individual’s leadership, community service as well as their personal character. “Eagle Scout” by itself means to be a great Scout. It means you have achieved Scouting’s toughest challenges of the advancement program. Scouting’s goal is to develop each and every Scout into three basic aims, physical fitness, good Citizenship and exceptional personal character. To advance through the Boy Scout system and earn the title of Eagle Scout, means a Scout has finished 21 or more merit badges, been a leader of his Troop, and knows what it means to be of service to others. When a Scout earns his Eagle Scout award, he is what Scouting considers to be the best. As you can see, Troop 516 has some pretty amazing young men!
From 3-4 May, Scouts from Troop 516 attended an overnight indoor rock-climbing opportunity in Richmond, along with another Boy Scout Troop in our area. The two Scout Troops are very friendly with each other and they all enjoyed a great time and some Scouting fellowship together. From 18-19 May, members of our Troop again enjoyed an overnight camping trip, this time on the battleship USS Wisconsin in Norfolk. The Troop members participated in numerous nautical activities. Unfortunately due to the weather, they were unable to sleep as planned on the
ships outside deck and instead camped inside the museum. Once again, a good time was had by all.
On 11 June, Troop 516 held a Troop Court of Honor at Andrew Chapel where Troop leaders recognized all of the Troops Scouts for their many achievements and rank advancements since February 2013. Two Scouts earned their Life Badges (Philip M. and Ashton W.) The Troop Court of Honor also was the time when the adult Troop key leaders changed leadership responsibilities. Pat Valentia took over as Troop 516 Committee Chair from David Wright and Craig Doty took over as Scoutmaster from Kevin Arthur -- both Dave and Kevin plan to stay active in the Troop. Kevin relinquished Scoutmaster responsibilities and passed along duties to Craig after volunteering in this position for over 2 years which in itself is a very demanding and time consuming commitment. Thank you Kevin for an exceptional leadership performance and we welcome Craig as the new Troop Scoutmaster.
This summer, Troop 516 has 7 members staffing positions at the Goshen Scout summer camp. The adults attending are Chris Bornholtz, Brendon Cobb, David Gibson, and Grady Hummer. The Scouts attending this Scout Camp are Nick B., Patrick C., and Andrew B.. Troop 516 also has 2 Boy Scouts (Patrick C. and Andrew B.) that will attend and represent our Troop at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in West Virginia in February 2014.
Finally, on Sunday, 14 July, the Troop will participate in Andrew Chapel’s outreach with the church's Homeless Mission. The Scouts will assist with packing lunches, health kits, and organizing clothing.
As a prisoner of war in Vietnam, Eagle Scout George Coker refused to write a statement denouncing America. Because of his refusal, he was forced to stand against a wall, arms over his head, for 13-hour stretches, day after day after day. Coker tried everything to survive those long hours: praying, counting to himself, thinking about his family. By the end of two months, however, he could barely remember his own name. But he remembered the Boy Scout Oath. "The very last thing I could consciously hold onto was the Scout Oath," he said. "By the end, I could only get out the first verse: 'On my honor I will do my best.' That forced my brain to function and say, 'I will do this again. I will not do what they want me to do.' "

Mission opportunities this summer -‐ keep some space on your calendar -‐
We are becoming involved in a couple of mission projects in our area. Two separate individuals are receiving a major home rebuild. We’ll be asking for your help. You won’t need to plan or prepare, just show up and work! Start praying about how God is calling you to help those in our church and those in the community around us. Then when the need is announced, say “Here I am, let’s go!”
FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT NEWS
From the District Superintendent… Rev. Dr. Ted Smith “Understanding the why in a matter will never wear out; whereas the how must change over time... If you understand why you do something, you may be less inclined to say ... “this won't work in my town."
-‐ Pastor Ralph Moore, Making Disciples: Developing Lifelong Followers of Jesus Why? Why? Why? The question “Why?” usually corresponds to values and purposes, while the question “How?” relegates itself to mechanics. Many of us have experienced this -‐ talking with an inquisitive young child who begins asking "Why?" and follows every answer with an additional "Why?” I have heard many times that, “the why must come first.” After reading the remark by Pastor Moore, it occurred to me that this is the best way to introduce the Fredericksburg District Hartwood Project; our emerging plans to develop a Community Center and Mission Hub on the 23 acres we own just off Route 17 northwest of Fredericksburg. Why a Community Center & Mission Hub? We discovered through prayer, demographic studies, and conversation with persons in the region an urgent need for Elder Daycare, Children’s Programs, additional Preschool Care, additional Children’s play areas and a centrally located Mission Hub. Our goal is to match each of these needs with our deep passion for Mission ministry. Our Mission Hub will be a place to conduct Mission training, gather Mission supplies, and offer hands-‐on Mission experiences. This would be the only Mission Hub located between North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Our Mission Hub vision was fueled in part by a team that visited the Susquehanna Conference Mission Hub. You can find out more about the Susquehanna Mission hub via a web visit to http://www.missioncentral.org. Can we really afford this project in a sluggish economy? The real question is, “Can we can afford to turn away from prayers that have now been answered?” a) We believe God always provides for Holy inspired visions, and b) People respond with resources and money to a great vision. We stand firm in the many Old and New Testament examples of God providing more than abundant resources and then revealing to the faithful the blessings of taking talents and putting them to use rather than burying them in the ground (Matthew 25:14-‐30). We do not believe faithfulness should be tied to fear, sequestration, slowly recovering economies, or the temptation to wait for extra com-‐fort dollars. We know without a doubt that we can enter into community partnerships that will provide re-‐sources. We can engage in acts of selfless giving and make second mile offerings. We will call upon grant writers and fund raisers. We’ve decided to follow God’s leading in bringing together the human and financial resources to meet this vision. Why doesn’t the district help our struggling little church instead of taking on such a grand effort? We have offered significant resources to your church and will continue to do so as we are embarking on a bold undertaking for God’s glory. Thanks be to God, the Fredericksburg District has cast a lifeline to our struggling churches for two years. On a shoestring budget and by the grace of God: ♦ we have helped churches build ramps if that was their need, ♦ we have used the Equitable Compensation fund to help struggling churches pay clergy salaries, ♦ we have helped churches with frequent pastoral changes cover moving expenses, ♦ we offer training on Reaching New People (3 training events are now open for registration), ♦ we offer Annual District Training on nine different topics related to strengthening your church (scheduled for November 16 at King George High School), ♦ we continue to encourage every congregation to call on the Regional Resource Team, as mentioned at the 2012 Charge Conferences, ♦ we continue to offer training to your full-‐time, part-‐time, and bi-‐vocational clergy, ♦ In 2013 we will work to revive Lay Servant training opportunities throughout the district,
♦ we also plan to continue using conference staff for specialized training such as (S)PRC. Metaphorically, you could say the district continues to lead your church to the waters of training for greater vitality in the hope that you will drink. Lastly, we recognize that ministry is not an either/or proposition. We are committed to strengthening your church and embarking on a bold, new vision.

From the District Superintendent… Rev. Dr. Ted Smith (continued) I ask one thing of you. Ask God to place in your heart how to respond to this vision. We need people. Maybe you are the person we need on the project team, maybe you are gifted at fund raising, maybe you are a gifted interpreter, maybe you are a prayer warrior, maybe you have a connection to a non-‐profit that would make a perfect partner, maybe you have the architectural skills needed, maybe you can add a widow’s mite to the fund raising effort, maybe this is the estate planning legacy you’ve been waiting for, maybe your spiritual gift is that of encouragement and you are the person who can send the project team notes of encouragement over the next two or three years, or maybe God is calling you assist this vision in another way. I’m encouraging you to ask the question; say “Speak Lord, your servant is listening. How I can be faithful to this vision?”
