The opening hymn is a reminder of our dependence

upon God’s grace as individuals and as a people. It

was written to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the

Declaration of Independence, in 1876. The tune waswritten in 1892 by the organist of St. Thomas Episcopal

Church, in New York City. The text expresses not our

independence, but rather our dependence upon

the Lord. We have gathered again in worship today

to “retune” our lives to our reliance upon the Lord

for every part of our life. Each week we have the

opportunity to gather together, as God’s people, to

remind ourselves of what is true, what is lasting, and

what is absolute. The irony is not that “freedom” comes

from no restraint, but rather that freedom comes from

the absolute Truth. God is the truth. It was Jesus who

said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We havecome today to participate in God’s great story.

ABOUT COMMUNION

Today we celebrate the sacrament of Communion, also knownas the Lord’s supper, the story of which is found in Luke 22:7-19.

We believe in an “open table.” We invite every believerwho has publicly professed faith in Jesus to join us in thiscelebration. We believe by the power of the Holy Spirit, thatthe bread and the cup become for us the living presence ofthe broken body and shed blood of Jesus. We do not believeit becomes actual flesh and blood, but the spiritually living

presence of God through the Holy Spirit.

Presbyterian churches do not have altars like otherchurches may. We have a table, symbolic of the Great Feastof Thanksgiving we will one day enjoy with Jesus and theheavenly host, as illustrated in Matthew 26:29 & Luke 22:16-18.We view the cross of Christ as the final and sufficient altar, on

which the ultimate sacrifice was made.Suggestions for Celebrating Communion. Before serving thebread and wine (non-alcoholic grape juice), the pastor will leadthe congregation in a time of prayer. During this time, confessyour sins to God; ways you have violated His commandments;areas of your life where you are not living by faith; things you doin an attempt to earn His favor.

While the bread is being served, meditate on what the deathof Jesus means for you; how the sins you confessed were laidupon Him and paid for with His body. Rejoice that you do notsuffer God’s judgment because Christ suffered this judgment onyour behalf.

While the cup is being served, let it wash away your guilt, muchthe way we are washed spiritually by the blood of the Lamb(Jesus). One day, you will feast with God and all that your heartdesires will be fully satisfied. Take this time to confess specificthings that capture your heart more than God (approval ofothers, success, your family, etc.). Rest in His presence.

need 10 volunteers each day of the week, and we
