MADURAI: Launching a scathing attack on AIADMK leader  Jayalalithaa, Congress vice- president Rahul Gandhi, at back-to-back election meet- ings in Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai on Saturday, said Tamil Nadu does not need the rule of a Chief Min- ister “who stays behind four walls, crushes dissent and be- lieves that she has the answer for every problem.”
In Madurai, sharing the dais with M. K. Stalin, trea- surer of the DMK, the Con- gress’ senior ally, Mr Gandhi emphasised that both of them had understood that “direc- tionally, in thinking, we are similar.”
He regretted that Tamil Nadu, which had been India’s most successful State, had be-
come “backward in many, many areas” in the last five years. It was the State which had leaders like Periyar, Kam- araj, MGR and M. Karunanid- hi, who flowed into the sea of  people like a river, listened to
them and understood them. Above all, they were humble. “I am confident that Mr. Sta-
lin also has these qualities,” he said.
Mr Gandhi stuck to the same theme at all venues. He alleged that both Ms Jayala- lithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were “sitting
indoors assuming to have so- lutions for the problems of  everyone.”
Mr Gandhi narrated the story of Sathya, a ninth stan- dard girl from Theni, who lost her father due to alcohol- ism.
Liquor menace
“Ironically, this is the truth in Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Gandhi said and pointed out that the number of liquor shops had gone up from 1,800 to 6,800 in the last five years. “The Chief  Minister gave Rs 5,000 worth freebies and took away Rs 60,000 from each family through liquor shops,” he charged.
Campaigning at Madura- voyal in Chennai late in the evening, he said that while the 93-year-old DMK leader M. Karunanidhi had gone to
meet the people of Chennai during the floods, Ms. Jayala- lithaa was not seen.

M otherhood is reason for cele- bration in any family, but till a time not so long ago, preg- nancy was a very private af-
fair. An announcement outside the close group of family or friends was a strict no- no.
But times have changed and that is not the case anymore. For the Facebook gener- ation of young mothers-to-be, expecting a child is time make the announcement in style — with help from professional pho- tographers — happily flaunting their baby bumps.
Young parents-to-be in Delhi-NCR are increasingly turning to professional pho- toshoots to capture some precious mo- ments before they welcome their child.
Cashing in on the trend and tapping this upcoming segment in the market, many professional photographers have now started specialising in ‘maternity photography’.
Anant Shroff, a 31-year-old management
consultant and his banker wife Tamanna, who is also 31, are expecting their first child. Since they wanted to record the mo- ments before the child comes into the pic- ture, the young couple decided to get in touch with a professional photographer, Akshey Mehta.
“What women go through during this period can be difficult. Tamanna is fond of  photography, and getting our pictures tak- en was a way for her to look and feel good about herself,” said Mr. Shroff.
“The photo sessions can be a little tax- ing for an expecting mother and you have to be extra careful, but we really like the results,” he added.
Mr. Mehta, who specialises in pre-wed- ding and wedding photography, but is fair- ly new to maternity photography, suggest- ed that the couple get clicked with monuments at Hauz Khas in the backdrop. “Many young parents like such locations. Qutub Minar is also a favourite location for maternity photography,” Mr. Shroff  said. “I think the trend is catching up. You can go to any e-commerce site, look for maternity photographers and be flooded with options,” he added.
“In fact, I found out that the charges in many cases are quite reasonable,” he said.
A maternity photoshoot can cost any- where between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 30,000, de- pending on the photographer you opt for, and if you decide to go for a particular theme. The remuneration, meanwhile, is good enough for many photographers to specialise in maternity photography
alone. Take, for instance, Anega Bawa, a 31-
year-old textile designer who turned into a full-time maternity and newborn photographer.
“When I was pregnant some years ago, I was looking for a photographer who could document my pregnancy. I wanted to cele- brate it. For most people nowadays, this is a once in a lifetime experience as most people don’t have more than one child,” said Ms. Bawa.
“You feel special about your baby bump because it wouldn’t be there after a while. Once the rut begins, your life is all about the baby. I wanted to celebrate these mo-
ments but I couldn’t find a photographer who specialised in this and whose work I liked,” she added.
Tired of looking for a maternity photog- rapher, she started taking her own pic- tures using a tripod.
An alumnus of The National Institute of  Design, Ahmedabad, she was familiar with photography and had always loved clicking others.
“It caught up and became a passion. I started getting requests from friends and family to take their pictures, but I didn’t feel very confident as I was basically a de- signer,” she said.
“It was only later that I thought it was
time to study photography and take class- es. It was last year that I ventured out on my own,” said Ms. Bawa.
Catching up
According to her, the trend of maternity photography has been around for some years, but the demand shot up only recent- ly. “People are still coming out. The trend is still very new to Delhi as not many an- nounce their pregnancy. It is seen as a western concept. Most don’t do it because their parents disapprove, but many par- ents-to-be are now going ahead with it. The trend is catching up,” she said.
Tarun Jha, another photographer who specialises in maternity photography, however, says that the segment is yet to grow. “People in India are yet to get used to it, but thanks to western influence and looking at international couples, many young parents are opting for it. It is less about memories and mostly about sharing pictures on social media,” said Mr. Jha.
In fact, clients not only request for nice
pictures, but ones where they look beauti- ful. “There are lot of requests where cli- ents say that they should not look fat in pictures. We don’t believe in airbrushing, we opt for capturing real life through our lenses. Our focus is on the concept,” he added.
“Women look beautiful when they are pregnant and I try to make them feel beau- tiful. Many clients have complimented me saying they didn’t look this beautiful even in their wedding pictures,” Ms. Bawa said.
“I try to make them feel comfortable and bring out the emotions of motherhood by giving the pictures a dreamy and soft look,” she added.
Male photographers, on the other hand, have to go the extra mile to make their cli- ents feel comfortable, feels Mr. Jha.
“I take a lot of time to convince the mother that they would look beautiful. If  the mother is not comfortable, the pic- tures don’t come out good. Comfort and connect between the subject and the pho- tographer is very important,” he said.

DELHI TODAY
fter more than three days of ques- tioning and not finding “enough evidence” against them, the Delhi Police Special Cell let off four youths — suspected to be Jaish-e- Mohammad (JeM) sympathisers — on Saturday.
The four were among the 10 de- tained by the Cell during simulta- neous raids in Delhi and Ghazia- bad on May 3.
The operation also led to the ar- rest of three men.
“We were done questioning them and found these four were ready for counselling. Most oth- ers may be allowed to go soon,” said Deputy Commissioner of Po- lice (Special Cell) P.S. Kushwah.
Abdur Raziq from the organisa- tion Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind who
accompanied the four boys and had
spent some timecounselling them in the presence of  the cops earlier in the day, said the boys had nothing to do with JeM or even those arrest- ed and that he was confident about
the other detained boys being re- leased soon.
Counsel request
The Jamiat is arranging for fi- nancial and legal assistance for the detained men.
Additionally, it has been re- quested by the police to counsel the detained men, as has been a well-known psychiatrist who has counselled Gujarat riot victims in the past as well, said the police.
Earlier, the police had claimed that repeated mention of alleged atrocities against Muslims in In- dia and elsewhere had played a part in these suspects getting
drawn towards the JeM ideology. Of those released, three are
from North East Delhi’s Chand Bagh while the fourth is from Gha- ziabad’s Loni.
They left the Special Cell office on Lodhi Road around 4 p.m. and left for their respective homes with eagerly-waiting family mem- bers. They were also accompa- nied by their lawyer, advocate M.S. Khan.
Mr. Raziq also tried to distance the detained boys from the arrest- ed ones — Sajid, Shakir and Sab- bir.
It was allegedly at Sajid’s Chand Bagh residence that an impro- vised explosive device (IED) went off accidentally while he was trying to assemble it.
For the others, police sources said they had to go through some more rounds of counselling at the Cell office before they are allowed to leave and even after that, they would be under the observation of  certain NGOs.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the
teams formed by the Cell are cur-rently in Western Uttar Pradesh areas such as Saharanpur in search of more IEDs and other ex- plosives.

NEW DELHI: A group of people sitting in a queue on a pavement just outside the Special Cell office in Lodhi Colony has been a familiar sight here for the last three days.
The days changed but the expressions on their faces remained the same.
Saturday, however, was different for the family members of the 10 suspects in the alleged JeM module case. Four among them walked out, bringing relief to their families and hope to others.
In the run up to this moment of release — something they claim they were repeatedly assured of by the police for the last three days — they spent their days with the hope of  taking their children back home.
But, at the end of the day, the assurance would prove to be a false one. Next morning, they would come back to the Special Cell office again
expecting a different scenario but the day would finally turn out to be as disappointing.
Unknown fear The situation induces both
cynicism and scepticism which is why they are not forthcoming when
approached by journalists. Some open up but choose not to
identify themselves. Even the responses are guarded
and they explain why. “I do not know whether a
statement I make to express my concern for my son will be interpreted in a different way, given a spin and invite further trouble,” says
the mother of a suspect, who was not among the four to be released on Saturday.
It takes a little more convincing to make her open up about the charges against the boy.
“How can they be certain that the people he was speaking to were terrorists? And does merely talking to Sajid (an accused) makes him a terrorist?” she asks.
The father of another man who was released on Saturday, said in the last three days, he would be confronted with the question of his two young grand-daughters every
night: “Where is our father?” OnSaturday, the grandfather was going back armed with an answer.
A young boy whose detention was over chose to keep his response precise. “They did not beat us. Gave us tea to drink, made us sleep in AC,” is how he summed up his last three days with the request of not probing further.

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Saturday summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as an accused in a defamation case for allegedly calling Delhi Police personnel “thulla”
last year.Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey of  the Saket courts summoned the chief  ministers after recording the pre-summoning evidence by the complainant.
“Prima facie, court is satisfied that offence punishable under Section 499/500 IPC is committed by Arvind Kejriwal, so he be summoned for the same for July 14,” the Magistrate said while summoning the chief minister.
Counsel for the complainant argued that the aggrieved being an employee of the Delhi Police and known in society, among relatives, friends and public at large as the same was defamed by the word used by accused Mr. Kejriwal.
The case has been filed by Delhi Police constable, Harvinder, against the ‘thulla’ remark, allegedly made in reference to the city police personnel by the chief minister in a TV interview last year.
The complainant has
chief minister underSections 500 (defamation) and 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
Stating that he was hurt by the chief minister’s remark, the complainant said: “Using a derogatory and demeaning term like ‘thulla’ to refer to police personnel is equivalent to referring all Delhi Police officials as lethargic and unproductive. This word has, therefore, harmed the reputation of the complainant in the eyes of  general public, including his family, relatives and friends.”
Being in a Constitutional position as the chief  minister, Mr. Kejriwal had immense influence and reach and his words impacted the public perception of the Delhi Police, the complaint said.
By using the derogatory and insulting word ‘thulla’ to refer to the police personnel, he had crossed all the limits of decency, the complaint further stated.

ver 600 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters and 12 Members of  the Delhi Legislative Assembly were detained by the Delhi Po- lice as they attempted to march towards the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at the conclusion of a rally at Jantar Mantar here on Saturday.
The AAP had organised a rally against what it alleged was a Bha- ratiya Janata Party-Congress conspiracy to hush up the Agus- taWestland chopper scam in the heart of the Capital which, begin- ning 10 a.m. onwards, culminated in a footfall of close to a 1,000 at- tendees and also had senior AAP functionaries such as Kumar Vishwas, Sanjay Singh, Ashutosh and Dilip Pandey in attendance.
Deputy Commissioner of Po- lice (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal said 602 protesters including 12 AAP legislators were placed un- der preventive custody and taken
to the Parliament Street Police Station since the march was illegal in view of the imposition of sec- tion 144 of the Crim-
inal ProcedureCode in the area be- fore being let off in the evening
Alleging that both parties were hand-in-glove for respective political motives, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kej- riwal launched a scathing attack on Mr. Modi and Ms. Gandhi be- fore leaving the venue.
The march began soon after. Deputy Speaker of the Delhi
Legislative Assembly Bandana Kumar was among the senior AAP functionaries to participate in the march.
Swift action by police The Delhi Police had been
gathering intelligence inputs re- lated to the footfall expected at the event over the last three days and was prepared to detain pro- testers as soon as they reached the vicinity of Race Course Road.
Having a preventive mecha- nism, which consisted of three layers of barricades in addition to several companies of paramili- tary personnel in anticipation, security personnel got down to the job as soon a contingent of  protesters reached the Tughlak Road.

NEW DELHI: While the police were able to successfully
stop the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protesters from re- aching their targeted desti- nations, they were unable to help thousands of commu- ters in reaching theirs.
Traffic was slowed for hours in some key arterial roads in the Luteyns’ Zone thanks to the chaos caused by the rally.
The AAP, which alleged that the BJP and the Con- gress had forged an alliance of corruption, had its leader attempting to drive the message home — quite lit- erally — when they headed for the residences of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President So- nia Gandhi.
Pre-empting security concerns, in case some AAP volunteers succeeded in re- aching the residence, the
police closed several roadsto normal traffic. Notable among these
were Race Course Road and  Janpath, where the two leaders live.
Additionally, Ashoka Road and Akbar Road, where the national head- quarters of the BJP and the Congress are located, were also closed to normal traffic for some time. Barricades were also erected at Pandit Pant Marg where the Delhi BJP office is located.
The blocked routes re- sulted in slow traffic on the other roads connecting the North-South stretch and even the ones connecting New Delhi to Central and East Delhi.
Traffic remained slow at Tees January Marg and Teen Murti Marg. These di- versions were put in place once the AAP leaders start- ed their march. However, since the time was between 11.30 a.m. and 12 noon and it was a Saturday, the overall traffic volume was compar- atively low preventing a major jam.

NEW DELHI: Retaliating against his charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Delhi Bha- ratiya Janata Party (BJP) ac- cused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of attempting to indirectly help the Congress Party and Sonia Gandhi in the Augusta Westland Case.
At a press conference on Sat- urday, BJP Delhi Pradesh Presi- dent Satish Upadhyay, Leader of  the Opposition Vijender Gupta and Pradesh General Secretary Ramesh Bidhuri said that Mr. Kejriwal’s weak resolve to end corruption could be seen in the suppressed investigation of the Rs. 400 crore scam by the Sheila Dikshit government, related to the Delhi Jal Board, which was revealed by his own Minister.
“Mr. Kejriwal wants the Cen- tre to arrest Sonia Gandhi with-
out full investigation under a political and a weak case sub- mitted in the court so that Ms. Gandhi and other accused per- sons may get advantage. This
way Ms. Gandhi and accused persons may escape puni- shment and after that Mr. Kejri- wal may come with Ms. Gandhi on the national stage,” Mr. Up-
adhyay said. Mr. Gupta asked why the
AAP government was yet to take action against Ms. Dikshit in the Water Tanker Scam de- spite claiming that he had 370 pages of proof against her.
“I fail to understand why the Delhi government is not allow- ing FIR in the cases related to CWG or Power Discoms against the Sheila Dikshit gov- ernment? Mr. Kejriwal’s plea that action against Ms. Dikshit is not progressing due to issues with the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) is ridiculous; if  ACB is not taking action then who is stopping the Kejriwal government from going to court?” Mr. Gupta asked.
Mr. Bidhuri said that Mr. Kej- riwal, who claimed that he was “very much worried” about the Augusta Westland case, should tell the people what action he has taken against “his own cor-
rupt” Minister Asim Moham- mad Khan from whom he had demanded resignation for graft
Get your house in order first: Congress to Kejriwal
Hitting back at Mr. Kejriwal, who had named several senior Congress functionaries in his speech earlier in the day de- manding that they be sacked for their involvement in the Agusta scam, Congress leader Manish Tewari said that it will be pru- dent if Mr. Kejriwal first put the affairs of his own house in order.
“They need to tell Delhiites how many of their Ministers were sacked in the past one year, what are the charges against them, why they had to leave their posts and how many of their MLA s are facing hei- nous criminal charges in terms of the provision of the IPC code,” Mr. Tewari said.

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Vijay Goel on Saturday threatened a stir at the Ramlila Maidan if the Delhi government tried to en- force the odd-even scheme in the Capital again without en- suring the availability of ade- quate transportation infras- tructure and preparedness.
Mr. Goel, who deliberately violated the restrictions of  the recently-concluded sec- ond phase of the scheme and was fined, also suggested that a survey be conducted under the guidance of the Supreme Court or Election Commis- sion, to ascertain and put for- ward the view of the people of  Delhi with respect to the next phase.
“If odd-even III is imple- mented without adequate in- frastructure and public trans- port then on the scheme’s very first day there will be a rally in Ramlila Maidan by Lok Abhiyaan to strongly protest against it,” Mr. Goel said at a presser.
Mr. Goel further alleged that the second rendition of  the scheme was implemented
by the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government “without a proper survey”.Mr. Goel said he would request the Centre and the Supreme Court to form a committee on pollu- tion and environment-related matters, which would aim at assessing whether there was enough preparedness by the Delhi government before the next enforcing of the scheme, which he termed a mere pub- licity stunt.
Publicity budget
“When the committee is satisfied and gives a nod that there is adequate public transport and other modes of  commute, only then will the third phase of the scheme be implemented,” Mr. Goel said.
He added that the Delhi government should an- nounce the publicity budget of odd-even II.
“The government should answer exactly how much has been spent on odd-even phase II. The publicity bud- get of the scheme should be made public. Pollution level
reports by various agencies should also be made p ublic,” Mr. Goel said.

quired to take care of the stu- dents as well as government property while according per-

The playgrounds will be available for two types of book- ings: intermittent (not for more than two days) and short duration (not for more than seven days). Charges for inter- mittent bookings range from Rs. 200 to Rs. 1,000 a day de- pending upon the sport to be played. Charges for short-du- ration bookings are between

NEW DELHI: A diktat by the Jawahar- lal Nehru University’s administra- tion asking students to not invite outsiders for protest in the cam- pus has not gone down well with the JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA), who have launched a protest against the administration by going on a hunger strike start- ing Saturday.
“JNUTA had met the Vice- Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar two days ago with the hope of finding a solution to the on-going prob- lem. However, to our utter shock, the JNU administration chose to threaten the teachers’ body on the basis of hearsay. JNUTA has so far not invited any individual or insti- tution to join the hunger strike,” said Bikramaitya Choudhary, Sec- retary of JNUTA.
“However, it would like to reassert that it is the privilege of  an elected teachers’ body to call any institution or individual that it finds fit to speak in the university. It is well within its democratic rights,” he added.
‘Persecution based on perception’
In a circular issued on Friday, the JNU administration had said: “The JNU Administration has been holding discussions with the  JNUTA, JNUSU and the students on hunger strike. It reiterates that the best way to resolve the issues is through dialogue and discus- sion. It requests all the teachers and students to avoid inviting people from outside the campus for any gathering or activity to press their demands, which could undermine peace and security in the campus.”
With a huge banner hanging at the protest site, that reads: “No persecution to justify percep- tion”, the JNUTA made their de- mand clear: “the administration cannot take action on students or threaten teachers only on the ba- sis of perception.”
“In our meeting with the V-C,
he told us that there was a need for the punishments on the February 9 incident because of the larger
perception against the students regarding the incident. Now this is what we have to oppose through our protest, there can be no perse- cution on the basis of perception,” Mr. Choudhary added.
Human chain
A group of JNU alumni also joined the protesting students and teachers and observed a hunger strike on Saturday. In the evening, a human chain was formed by stu- dents, teachers and alumni in front of the admin block, which has become the hub of all protests in the campus.
“Whatever the JNU administra- tion has done is against the ethos of the university. It cannot be ac- cepted in any manner. Our issues are not only with the high-level in- quiry panel but the way the puni- shments have been allotted to stu- dents and what has followed since then. The attitude of the adminis-
tration is just unacceptable,” said Mallarika Sinha Roy, faculty at Women’s Studies in JNU.

STUDENTS PROTEST
NEW DELHI: Their health has certain- ly taken a beating, but the students
sitting on an indefinite hunger strike against the JNU administra- tion show no sign of backing down as their protest entered the 10th day on Saturday.
“It seems as if the administration has made up their mind to punish the students, which is why it has been ten days that we are sitting on a hunger strike but no one has even bothered to inquire about our health, forget agreeing to our de- mands. We have never seen a more insensitive Vice-Chancellor than  Jagadesh Kumar, who is ready to see the students suffer but not lis- ten to their demands,” said JNUSU general secretary Rama Naga.
“If the administration does not budge, we will also not withdraw from our strike. This is a fast unto death and we will not withdraw till the time our demands are met,” he added.
Sitting on mattresses laid down in the parking shade of the admin
block, which has now been dubbed ‘Freedom Square’, the students hold discussions, organise protests
and also cram for their papers and exams — all while fasting.
Two small coolers have been ar- ranged to give some relief from the sweltering heat, but that does not help much as some of them have suffered from dehydration and other health problems.
Sixteen students are continuing with the indefinite hunger strike after six of them, including JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, had to
withdraw due bad health. Around 20-30 join the relay strike daily.
Mr. Kumar had to be rushed to
AIIMS two days ago after his blood pressure levels dropped. He was released on Friday but doctors ad- vised him to withdraw from the hunger strike as it might lead to in- ternal bleeding.
“Our demands have been very clear from the beginning, all the punishments should be withdrawn for students. Students will not face rustication or pay any fine. Unless the administration agrees to that,
we will continue with the strike,” said Anant Prakash, a striking stu- dent.

NEW DELHI: Another year, an- other plan to clean the Yamu- na. This time, the Centre and the Delhi government have come together to launch pro- jects under phase three of the
Yamuna Action Plan. Thousands of crores of ru-
pees have already been spent over the years to clean the riv- er, which has been reduced to a dirty drain in Delhi, without too much to show for it. But, on Saturday, Union Water Re- sources Minister Uma Bharti and Delhi Jal Board chairper- son Kapil Mishra announced eight schemes that they said would work. Under the Cen- tre’s ‘Namami Gange’ pro- gramme, the Union and Delhi governments launched a campaign to clean the Yamu- na. Everything from rehabil- itating the old sewer network to a trash skimmer will be a part of the plan that will cost about Rs.840 crore.
On Saturday, Ms. Bharti and Mr.Mishra inaugurated six schemes at a ceremony on the Chhat Ghat at ITO. The
schemes include rehabilita-tion and upgrade of the Ritha- la Phase-1 sewage treatment plant with a tertiary treat- ment plant, and the rehabil- itation of the Ashok Nagar and Jahangirpuri sewers. The trunk sewers number 4 and 5 as well as Narwana Road, Anand Vihar, Hargobind En- clave, Vikas Marg and Jhilmil sewers will also be rehabil- itated.
The Chhat Ghat, where pil-
grims descend to perform prayers and give offerings, will be rejuvenated.
Cleaning river surface
The Ministers also flagged
off a programme to clean theriver surface by launching a trash skimmer.
The boat would travel the length of the Yamuna in Delhi picking up floating solid waste.
A similar skimmer was used in the Ganges during the Kumbh Mela last year.
Speaking at the inaugura- tion, Ms. Bharti admitted that there had been no concrete results even though Rs.1,500
crore had been spent throughphases one and two of the Ya- muna Action Plan.
“However, our new plans will ensure that we, along with the Delhi Jal Board, make it a river that we take pride in,” said Ms. Bharti.
The DJB would be taking the initiative forward by sub- mitting a comprehensive plan to the Union Water Re- sources Ministry as well as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal within a month, saidMr. Mishra. “This Yamuna Action
Plan-3 will be the first plan to comprehensively help with sewage treatment and solid waste management along with river front development and providing a proper Chhat Ghat for devotees,” said Mr. Mishra.
The DJB chairperson also promised that the river would be cleaned within 36 months.

NEW DELHI: Forest land near South Delhi’s Neb Sarai, which has become a dump- ing ground over the years, will be reclaimed and its greenery restored by the En- vironment and Forest De- partment.
On Saturday, Deputy
Chief Minister Manish Siso- dia and Environment and Forest Minister Imran Hus- sain inaugurated the pro- gramme to restore the forest near the Indira Gandhi Na- tional Open University (IG- NOU).
In a statement, the gov- ernment admitted that the forest was being used as “a dumping ground for gar- bage and debris”. The state- ment added that the dust emanating from the forest was damaging the lungs of  Delhiites, particularly chil- dren.
In fact, the restoration campaign was inspired by children from nearby schools who took up the cause of protecting the envi- ronment. The Panchavati Green Movement, an orga- nisation of children working to preserve the environ- ment, will be a part of the mission.
According to government officials, the restoration of  the forest land will help in cleaning the air in the area. The Ridge area of Neb Sarai has been plagued by ram- pant illegal construction and dumping. Reclaiming the land by planting more trees may help the Forest Department to keep land- grabbers away.
There are concerns that the total green cover in Del- hi, which was 299.58 square kilometres in 2009, may have shrunk due to large- scale illegal constructions.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the Aam Aadmi Party government
to appoint Food SafetyOfficers in order to check the presence of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables sold in the markets in the Capital.
Hearing a matter in which it had taken suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report on pesticides present in fruits and vegetables, which could cause cancer and damage nervous system and liver, a Division Bench asked the Delhi government to fix a time- frame for appointment of  officers.
The court had earlier directed the Union
Agriculture Ministry to set up a committee and frame guidelines to prevent the use of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables.
The Bench, comprising Chief Justice G. Rohini and  Justice Jayant Nath, was told by the Delhi
know what the Delhi government had done in the matter so far. Responding to this, the counsel said
advertisements had beenpublished and reports forwarded to the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board.
As the government’s counsel sought time to file a status report in the matter, the court posted the case for further hearing on August 10, saying it would need to get satisfied about the appointment of officers.
Some non-government organisations had submitted survey reports about vegetables and fruits sold in the city markets to the court, saying they contained pesticides in a harmful quantity.

NEW DELHI:
In what is a much-needed green initiative, the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) claims to have brought down energy consumption substantially in its two towers at Lodhi Road and Laxmi Nagar here. The two towers accommodate corporate and regional offices of as many as 65 public sector enterprises.
SCOPE Director-General
U.D. Choubey said here on Friday that savings in power consumption were 1.12 million units during 2015-16 over the previous year, leading to a saving of about Rs.1.23 crore. Accordingly, the power bill of  constituents has been substantially reduced.
During the last four years, similar efforts by SCOPE and its constituents resulted in a saving of about Rs.4.43 crore and 4.48 million units, said Dr. Choubey.

NEW DELHI: Two men who allegedly shot dead a man two days ago in South Del- hi’s Sangam Vihar have been arrested.
The accused include Pradeep (30), a former
State-level boxer, and Par-veen (25), who is an em- ployee at a cinema hall in South Delhi. During inter- rogation, Pradeep dis- closed that he used to own a gym in Sangam Vihar, but 40-year-old Jiwan Lal, the victim, had filed com- plaints against him, lead- ing to the shutting down of  the gym. This led to Pra- deep hatching a plan to eliminate him. — PTI
