The primary goal of the IAI has been to develop an integrated object-basedbuilding-data model containing information aboutall aspects of a building
throughout its lifecyle, which can be used to support interoperability among
discipline-specific applications . This integrated model is called IFC (Industry
Foundation Classes) and is currently in its third release--2x.

At the same time, it is important not to burden the IFC with over-expectations of beingthe be-all and end-all of interoperability in the building industry. There are othermethods ofdata integration that allow individual applications to communicate witheach other, such as APIs (Application Programming Interface), other data-oriented
export formats such as ODBC, XML for Internet-based applications , and so on. TheIFC mightnot be the best interoperability solution under all circumstances , andapplications mightstill need to develop direct links to some others formore efficientcommunication and tighter integration. Also, seamless integration of a suite ofcommercial applications based on the IFC formathas not yet been demonstrated, except for carefullymodeled test projects , indicating that the effort hasn't yet reached
the point where it is ready for mass consumption. However, it is definitely somethingto watch out for because once it works fully as envisioned, its integration capabilitiesand collaborative benefits can go a long way towards eliminating the inefficienciesand waste in the building industry.

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS & FEATURED SPEAKERS
2004: The Year the Universe Changed for the Construction and Building Industry
Many exciting events have occurred this year that have had and will have a profound effect
on our efforts to integrate and automate this industry. The NIST interoperability study waspublished and noted that the cost of inadequate interoperability in the U.S. capital fa cilities industryis $15.8 billion per year. The U.S. General Services Administration has announced that,
starting in FY2006, they will require contractors to submit IFC -based building information
models in support of all national office concept reviews. FIATECH has brought togetherhundreds of technical experts from across the industry to develop a research, development anddeployment agenda for achieving integration and automation in the most efficient and organized
way possible. The U.S. Federal Facilities council will hold a wo rkshop to use this Roadmap as away to identify common issues and identify specific programs and projects that they want to pursue, and the U.S. National Science Foundation will have a workshop bringing together leadingacademics from around the world to review the Roadmap agenda so that NSF can providefunding to universities to help us pursue it. Lastly, a growing number of companies, agencies, andindustry associations are recognizing the need to work together and are using the Roadmap as away to do that. This panel will be an open, facilitated discussi on of these events and what theymean for FIATECH and the industry.

The GSA and its BIM Mandate
In December 2003, the GSA (General Services Administration; www.gsa.gov) issued
internal guidelines to its regional staff stressing the need for on-time, under-budget
project deliveries in the capital construction program. It determined that new and
emerging technologies such as 3D/4D and BIM have the potential to dramatically
improve the outcome of projects and improve customer satisfaction.
As a result, earilier this year GSA/PBS solicited information on the use of IFC-based BIM
technology from all firms in the design, construction, facilitymanagement and real
property industries. According to GSA/PBS, the information will be "used to assist the
governmentin establishing potential sources in the marketplace with knowledge andexperience in the use and practices of this state-of-the-art technology."
GSA has indicated that, beginning in July, the delivery of IFC-based BIM will be required
for the preliminary design phaseof all new fiscal year 2006 projects .

IntroductionBuilding information modeling is Autodesks strategy for the application of information
technology to the building industry. Building information modeling solutions have threecharacteristics:
(1) They create and operate on digital databases for collaboration.(2) They manage change throughout those databases so that a change to any part of thedatabase is coordinated in all other parts.(3) They capture and preserve information for reuse by additional industry-specific applications.
The application of building information modeling solutions results in higher quality work, greater
speed and productivity, and lower costs for building industry professionals in the design, construction, and operation of buildings.
This paper discusseshow the use of information technology in the industry has led to the idea ofbuilding information modeling and the characteristics and benefits of building informationmodeling solutions.

While the term "building information modeling"had not yet been coined at the time the design of
the Eureka Tower gotunderway in 1998, FKAhad committed to the use of ArchiCAD which
offered the 3D object-oriented, database-driven
approach to building design they were looking toimplement.

William Shakespeare(15641616). The Oxford Shakespeare. 1914.
Romeo and Juliet
Act II. Scene II.
Its only your name that is my enemy;
You are yourself, not even a Montague. What's Montague? It is not a hand, or a foot,
Or an arm, or a face, or any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What's in a name? that which we call a roseWould smell as sweet if it had any other name.So Romeo, if he wasnt called Romeo, would
Retain that dear perfection which he hasWithout that title. Romeo, throw your name
away; And for that name, which isnt part of you,Take all of me.
