    Opening Prayer

    Come, Holy SpiritCome, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful andenkindle in them the fire of Your love.V. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created.

    Themes of the Pentateuch

    Creation

    There is only one God

    This one God created everything

    Everything God created was good

    Man created in image & likeness of God Importance of Sabbath

    The Fall

    All die because of Adams sin

    All inherit the effects of Adams sin

    Rapid deterioration of human race

    The Flood

    Escalation of sin

    Purification

    Abraham, the seed of salvation

    Called to go out in faith

    Rewarded by being promised as ablessing to the nations

    Asked to sacrifice his only son, Isaac

    Themes of the Pentateuch

    Exodus means leaving in Greek and refers to the departure fromslavery

    Initially, Joseph was favored by pharaoh, but eventually a pharaoharises who did not know Joseph, and the Israelites became slaves

    They lived and suffered in Egypt for 400 years before emergence ofMoses

    Like Abraham, Moses goes out in faith

    He pleads with pharaoh to allow Israel to journey into the desert so thatthey might worship God

    After much suffering, pharaoh allows them to go Israel is delivered through the waters of the Red Sea, foreshadowing

    Baptism

    Moses is a type of Jesus - he leads Gods people, as a miracleworker, and one who frees them from slavery

    Themes of the Pentateuch

    Picks up the story in the 2nd year after the departure from Egypt

    Moses develops forms of worship more specifically

    Proper worship and holiness of life are the main points of Leviticus

    247 laws regulating life, worship and ritual sacrifice are laid down

    Establishment of the Levitical priesthood

    Levitical sacrifices foreshadow Jesus perfect sacrifice on the Cross

    Day of Atonement is established, on which the Hebrews are purifiedexternally from sin

    In Hebrew, the name of the book is in the wilderness

    God calls a census to prove that he has kept his covenant withAbraham

    The descendants of Jacob have grown to 600,000 in 400 years

    God calls the Jews to be a holy people

    Because they doubt God, they wander in the desert for 38 years

    God never leaves them and appears to them under the form of a cloud

    Most Israelites who fled Egypt are dead upon entering Canaan - it is anew nation

    Themes of the Pentateuch

    In Greek, the name means second law

    Dates from the 7th century B.C.

    Near death, Moses promulgates the 10 Commandments

    Orders that the law be read aloud every seven years

    Israel is called to love and adore the one true God and to follow thereligious laws out of love for God

    The fire of love eventually dies, and Jews grow legalistic and pharisaical

    Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God is one Lord; and you shall love theLord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with allyour might.     Jesus is a man

    I will put enmity between you and the woman and between youroffspring and hers; he will strike at your head while you strike at hisheel. Gen 3:15

    But when the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son born of awoman. Gal 4:4

    God replied: Nevertheless, your wife Sarah is to bear you a son,and you shall call him Isaac. I will maintain a covenant with him asan everlasting pact. Gen 17:19

    The son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham. (The beginningof the genealogy of Jesus) Luke 3:34

    Jesus is a man

    A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall arise from Israel.Num 24:17

    Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob. (Thebeginning of the genealogy of Jesus) Matt 1:2

    But you Bethlehem-Ephrathah... from you will come forth for me onewho is to be ruler in Israel. Micah 5:1

    Joseph too went up to the city of David that is called Bethlehem. While theywere there, ... she gave birth to her first-born son. Luke 2:4-7

    Jesus is God

    Therefore the Lord Himself will give you this sign; the virgin will bear

    a son and name him Immanuel. Is 7:14

    ...the angel Gabriel was sent... to a virgin...Mary. Behold you will

    Resurrection of Jesus

    ... my body dwells secure, for you will not abandon me to Sheol, nor letyour faithful servant see the pit. Ps 16:10

    Ascension of Jesus

    Prophesies from book of Wisdom

    Let us beset the just one because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himselfagainst our doings; reproaches us for our transgressions of the law. 2:12

    Yes the just man dead condemns the sinful who live 4:16

    ...and styles himself a child of the Lord. 2:13

    This is he whom once we held a laughingstock... see how he is accountedamong the sons of God 5:3-5

    ...and boasts that God is His Father. Let us see whether His words betrue; let us find out what will happen to Him. For if He be the Son ofGod, He will come to defend Him. 2:16-18
