First of all, thanks to Mark Judish and his CRAB 34 team for their efforts in planning and executing the “Premier Porsche Weekender.”

The welcome party was excellent due to the work of Richard and Anne Walker and their helpers who prepared and served the Tri-Tip dinner. I had the opportunity to do a quality control tasting of the entrée before most of the guests were served. Nope, it wasn’t a presidential perk because I was ”volunteered” to help cut up the forty or so hunks of meat. The fixings were also excel-lent and helped make the whole meal special. A nice plus to the evening was that everyone stayed around to meet new friends and chat with their annual friends. Saturday came early and I had every intention to head down to the fairgrounds in Stockton to run Matt Deter’s CRAB 34 autocross. But that didn’t happen because I wasn’t feeling at all well in the morning and so stayed in bed for most of the morn-ing. Nope, it was not the welcome party wine or the food. Also on Saturday, fifty or so of the seventy-seven cars entered in CRAB this year were driven on the tour. Judging by comments I heard, Doug Klein and Carl Brakensiek lived up to their reputation for planning and organizing first-class driving tours. Herb & Jan Hoover put together a nice walking tour that had the option of being done on either Saturday or Sunday. The Cookie Anderson - Rudy’s Hideaway crab feed was one of, if not the best, we have ever had. There was more than enough food. Kirk Bradford, the “Voice of CRAB,” kept things moving along. A “first” this year was the postponement of all awards until the Beer & Brat picnic on Sunday. Sunday was also a very early-rise day for a weekend to participate in Helen Ashuckian’s rally, which was about one and half hours long and was a departure from the usual TSD (time, speed, distance) format used for past CRAB rallies. This year it was the “Monte Carlo” format, with only two average speeds per leg. The weather was nice, and the roads were “Porsche.” When we got back to the VFW Hall, the “funkhana,” devised

by John Kramer and Tom Sisson, was in progress. There was a larger than usual number of partici-pants in the event this year. Drivers were able to demonstrate their level of skill (or lack of it) of pulling out of and backing into the “garages” outlined on the pavement of the parking lot. The Beer & Brat, with Andy and Dianna Leight and Kim Kinder in charge, was excellent; and because the service was ef-ficient, there were no long waits in a queue. Conveniently, the beer kegs were midway between the brats and the concours area. There were many beautiful Porsches assembled on the lawn for the two concours events that were supervised by Jeff Kinder. Since Emily and I ran the rally, we enter our Porsche in the “fun” class, where the judging criteria were “dreamed up” by Jeff just

prior to the start of judging. Once again, Rachel Johnson pro-vided very nice awards for those who particaipated in the various events. CRAB, by design, is designed to allow particaption in most of the events. And CRAB is a weekend party occasional interrupted by a “competive” event. Thanks to all of our Sponsors for

helping make CRAB a success. Without their support our registration costs would be double. I would like to see CRAB 35 happen, especially because it would be the thirty-fifth, and possibly the last, anniversary of this long-standing tradition. We need a volunteer to chair CRAB 35. Please give this matter some consideration and give me your thoughts. On a another subject: Cookie Anderson and Doug Klein are putting together semi-monthly “calendar-type” e-mail messages to keep all of us updated on the next three month’s activities. This is working quite well and will keep our messages in your inbox a minimum. If you are not receiving the messages, them please check with Rik Larson to make sure we have your e-mail address. Thanks for being part of SVR. If it’s not fun, don’t do it.

Mike Dunne, the Sacramento Bee’s restaurant critic, gave plan b three and a half stars after his first visit there; that’s a very high rating for Mike, who is a pretty discriminating critic. Additionally, he rated it in the top ten new restaurants in Sacramento for 2007.

Since the cafe is normally closed on Mondays, the owner is opening especially for us and we will have the entire café to ourselves. Because of space limits we will be able to accommodate only thirty people. So it’s, first-come, first-served.

This is a French restaurant and our dinner comprises the following:

Mussels Provençale or Tartelette

Roast Chicken, rosemary au jus orGrilled Salmon, Provencale butter or

30 Years Ago (June 1978) The June 10-11 Hellava Good Time IV by Sierra Nevada Region featured a carburetion tune-up session at Boreal Ridge, a Hare ‘n’ Hound rally to Magic Carpet miniature golf course at Carnelian Bay, and a rib feed with volleyball, horseshoes, and a miniature golf contest with a $100-dollar first-place prize, all on Saturday. Boreal Ridge (elevation 7,100 feet) was a great place to tune carbureted cars for the upcoming Parade autocross at Aspen, Colorado (7,908 ft. elevation). Sunday’s SVR class results at the Boreal Zone 7 autocross: Larry Wilson 1st, Brian Lewis 6th, Jim Karver 7th, Stan Breyfogle 1st, Rik Larson 3rd, Kerry Creasy 1st, Paul Baldarelli 3rd, Mike Willis 2nd, Dwight Mitchell 1st, Tim Clark 2nd, Rich Farlinger 2nd, Ted Colbert 3rd, Jerry Freitas 2nd, John Lewis 8th, Jon Milledge 1st, Darrel Overstreet 3rd, Paul Bates 2nd, Pat Wilson 1st, Vicki Willis 1st, Gwen Clark 1st, Diane Colbert 2nd, Connie Farlinger 3rd, and Linda Mitchell 1st. With 115 entrants, the June 18th June Sprint SVSCC auto-cross by SVR (Al King, chair) had the largest attendance of any SVSCC event in 1978. SVR AX Producers: Mike Willis/Ted Colbert (course layout), Kathy King (registration), Rik Larson (timing), Jack Samples (pre-grid), and Darrel Overstreet (tech). The course set-up crew (donut dunkers) of Mike Willis, Paul Baldarelli, Larry Wilson, and Pat McLaughlin hung around to become beer quaffers after course teardown. Jon Milledge took TTOD-overall and Mike Willis TTOD-production cars. The June 24/25 joint SVR-Redwood Region Sears Point driver’s school went off without a hitch. SVR chair, Darrel Over-street, credited workers Rich Farlinger, Nancy McDade, Kerry Creasy, Dave Neukom, Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger, John and Kathy Peebles, Paul Bates, and Jon Milledge.

20 Years Ago (June 1988) Which way do stalactites form, up or down? SVR members in 18 cars learned that and more on the June 5 Calaveras Cave tour (near Sutter Creek), chaired by Bob Dennison and Elizabeth Carr, with lots of tight spaces requiring squirming and squat-walking (which Randy Vidmar handled very nicely). About stalactites:

they point downward, stalagmites point upward. Herb Hoover was worried that the stalactites might fall after noticing the scratched surfaces of the plastic hard-hats that were required for all. Karen Taggart was the only one to know the 80-minute cave guided tour lasted exactly 83 minutes. After the caverns, it was din-din at Black Bart’s in San Andreas. The June 18 SVR David Berkley evening (AKA 3rd Annual Gourmet Dinner & Wine Tasting) in Pavilions Shopping Center was put together for SVR by the proprietor, David Berkley, renown food and wine expert. The event was chaired by Linda Mitchell and had a 34-person limit. It filled up, fast. BIG autocross weekend in Sacramento on June 25/26 with Zone 7 Autocrosses #4 & #5 at Cal Expo, Lot A. Rik Larson was Saturday’s chair for SVR, Kevin Gilpin on Sunday for San Joaquin Region (now Sequoia Region). Sixty-seven drivers competed on Saturday, 70 on Sunday. Saturday evening featured a dinner and pool party at the Mitchell’s home. Kern Breaux kept a low profile both days until after Sunday’s event. In an attempted strongman feat while loading SVR’s equipment trailer during course tear-down, Kern grabbed a full, 50-pound bag of dolomite (a very fine, white powder used to mark the course) out of the trailer. At shoulder-height, the bag broke emptying its contents on Kern, the equipment, the trailer floor, and everyone near. Refusing to believe it happened, Kern slammed the door shut, and the trailer was towed off leaving a white trail to its between-events hiding place making a potential hair ‘n’ hound event with Kern doing his shtick as the Michelin Man. Dummkopf chair Randy Vidmar was nearly overcome, but managed to take notes.

10 Years Ago (June 1998) Saturday, June 13th (not Friday) featured the Beat the Heat at our Spring PCA-SVR Garage Sale at the home of Sue and Mike Ambrozewicz. Lots of interesting stuff changed hands at this event. About 100 people were there before 9:00 A.M., looking for bargains. SVR made a net profit of $400. Many SVR mem-bers stayed for a chicken and rib barbecue - with refreshment, of course. Porsche was the featured marque at the June 28 Palo Alto Concours, and several SVR members entered the event to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Porsche. Pat and Clint deWitt’s 1955 356 coupe took second in the Race Car Class after Clint scrambled to correct the results of an earlier-in-the-month wall-kissing episode. Ted Blake won the 356 Open Class with his 1960 356B cabriolet and Bob Cannon finished 6th in this class with his 1965 356C cabriolet. Phil Lawrence and his 1972 Green Machine 911 (nicknamed “Fish Lips”) was second in the 911 Early Class, with Jim Phillips’ 1967 911 Coupe close behind in third place. And, in the 911 Late Class, Margie and Lowell Irwin’s black 1986 911 finished 6th with Joyce and Scott Leiby’s red 1989 930 in 8th place. This event had very tough competition, with full concours cars competing with wash-and-shine cars in the same class. Tim and Susan Fleming also attended and wisely chose to place their 911 in a display-only (non-judged) category for its obvious protected parking benefits.

The CRAB 34 autocross was a lot of fun, with a course that was twisty but fast. The drivers were twisty and fast, too. Sometimes the course would twist faster than the driver

could - so much that Doug DeVetter won the infamous CRAB trophy – The Snidely Whiplash Bassackwards Award.

Beginners, veterans, and everyone in between came together to learn how to drive their Porsches the way they were meant to be driven. Each driver had six runs, and the event finished in time to get back to Folsom for the dinner party.

Those of you veteran autocrossers who decided to opt for the tour this year have been forgiven. You know who you are. Lastly, I’d like to thank Mark Judish for organizing CRAB 34 and making it a great success and Yokohama Tires and TrackMasters for their sponsorship of the autocross.

The GFV tour started at Nimbus Fish Hatchery next to Highway 50, instead of the VFW hall, avoiding the numerous stop-lights along Hazel. Nearly all drivers and passengers (84 including a pooch, in 46 cars) had signed releases and received route

instructions at Friday’s festivities, permitting an earlier-than-planned start. Breezing up Highway 50 and along El Dorado Hills Boulevard brought us to the real start of the tour - scenic Salmon Falls with its woop-de-doos and hairpin turns, many bordered by shiny, recently-replaced sections of guard rail. A right on Highway 49 and left on Marshall Grade positioned us at Prospectors Road, a former SCCA hill climb race course. Few resisted the chal-lenge. Garden Valley marked the beginning of a very fine Porsche road - tree-shaded, smooth, with

gently banked, linked turns, each encouraging a little more throttle. Four miles later, the road popped into the sunlight at Georgetown, our first rest stop. Our freshly prepared lunches were ready inside Jeff Wortons’ Country Market and Deli on Main Street. Leaving Georgetown, Highway 193 to Placerville brought excitement of a different nature. Carved by miners from a near-vertical canyon wall above the American River, the road has since been widened, but not by much. A freshly painted 3” white line marked the division between solid pavement and an abyss.

Green mountain meadows and spring wildflowers trimmed Highway 49 through Plymouth to Fiddletown, formerly home to over 2,000 Chinese miners and our second rest stop. Forking off Fiddletown Road onto Hale Road, we forded Dry Creek on a cement slab lying several inches under water. Twisty Ram’s Horn Grade brought us to sunny, warm Volcano just past noon. Some picnicked near the Cobblestone Amphitheater, while others noshed at the Whisky Flat Saloon or the Volcano Country Market. Returning via Sutter Creek, we found the new Highway 49 bypass had eliminated traditional traffic congestion, and returned the streets to locals and tourists, encour-aging many of us to pause and enjoy this colorful town.

Light traffic, warm weather, exciting and interesting roads, beautiful scenery, delicious Worton lunches and a stroll around Sutter Creek with our Porsche friends - a fine day, indeed. Thanks to the able assistance of Carl Brakensiek (co-leader), Herb and Jan Hoover, Bill and Cathy Keegan, Norm Plotkin and Dan Rowland the tour ran flawlessly and all had an enjoyable Porsche outing.

Rallymaster Helen Ashuckian put together a very clean and rally for the CRAB 34 entrants. A total of three legs took contestants up along the rim of Folsom Lake,

through El Dorado Hills and the Serrano development, south to the industrial park off of Latrobe Road and US 50, and a final trip down White Rock Road to Hazel and to the finish - and all of this by traveling less than 50 miles. Helen used a Monte Carlo format this year where there were only two average speeds per leg. Because she used stand off points (SOP), you could drive up to that point without penalty, then change to the new speed and drive into the checkpoint (usually just a couple of miles down the road). Contestants were limited to the use of their stock odometer, pencil and paper, and clocks (no calculators or special equipment allowed, which tends to level the competition). Scoring was done under the watchful eyes of Jessica and J. Toney (who had the low score overall), Rik Larson, and Andy Mayhew. A big thanks goes to Keith McMahan for measuring the course and performing the calculations. Rallymaster Helen Ashuckian had parsed out the work to every-one who volunteered. Location, location, location! This year, the funkhana was in the midst of all the CRAB activities, contributing to the best turn out in years. The course was in the shape of

a dollar sign and only 50’ by 130’. Participants drove two laps, shooting Nerf darts at targets. We had a wonderful cheering squad, led by Larry Sharp, which helped keep the competitive feelings high and the participants coming.

Course workers, Robert and Elaine Cannon, Darlene Byerley, Jerry Cupler, Janet Kramer assisted Tom Sisson and Jon Kramer, resetting cones, chasing darts, etc. When the going got tough, John Payne and Larry Sharp jumped in and helped as well. Just like last year, the weather gods smiled down upon SVR’s annual CRAB Concours event. Seventeen cars were entered in the more serious Wash & Shine category. Eighteen brave souls entering the Fun concours, not know-

ing what the rules would be. Wash & Shine is more of a traditional or formal competition. The car has to be clean, shiny where it’s supposed to be shiny - that sort of thing. Exterior paint and trim, tire surfaces, outer wheel surfaces, interiors, door packets, glove boxes, and trunks were judged.

The fun concours has a set of classes, judging criteria, and rules that are not selected until just before the start of the event. These eclectic rules change every year. One com-petitor left a bribe for the judges, but it must not have been much because she lost three points for the attempt. One category allowed a +5 or -5 points if anything really funny or strange (judges discretion) were found in the interior. Of note, five cars were found to have something really funny while three were found with something really strange. Special thanks go to our team

of judges, runners, parkers, and scor-ing. Mendocino 2008 Tour by Sacramento Valley Region

October 31st – November 2nd (Three Days)

e have 35 cars (as of May 1st) signed up so far for this three-day tour that spans Halloween. So why such a big push to let people know about an event that is six months away? It’s because we need to secure the rooms with deposits at the three primary inns

that we have booked. The 2007 Mendocino tour had more than 65 cars plus another 18 cars from Redwood Region that joined us on Saturday. Reservations for just one-night stays on the coast are difficult. Contact Rik for additional information (see below). This year we have a block of rooms at the Hill House in Mendocino, the MacCallum House also in Mendocino, as well as rooms at the Little River Inn (in Little River). The Hill House block is being coordinated by Tom and Tambra Kroetz (916.989.1984). The MacCallum House block is being coordinated by Frederick D. Rauch (916.989.3199). The Little River Inn block is being handled by Rik and Lettie Larson (916.481.6084). Room accommodations are either ocean view (all places) or garden view (Hill House). Contact the coordinators for additional information about the types of rooms remaining, deposits required, cancellation costs, etc. A deposit is required to hold a

room (all locations). Cancellation policies are strictly enforced. If you want to stay an extra day or two, either before or after the group, we will try to make it happen. But we must know now if you have plans to stay extra days. It is easier to reserve the rooms for longer periods (and then release the days if you don’t want them) than it is to add days to your stay. This is a three-day, two-night tour to the Mendocino area. You do not have to stay at the above places; you may make your own reservations elsewhere. If you need any assistance, contact Rik. This is a very informal tour; the only semi-competitive events are a miniature golf tournament on Saturday morning and a kite-flying contest on Saturday afternoon. Golf (miniature and real), tennis, horseback riding, beach walking, kayaking, etc. are all available on the north coast. We can provide many suggestions as to the area restaurants, wineries, points of interest, etc. And remember: don’t turn your back to the ocean.

At a recent men’s club meeting in Amador County, Sandy Sanders of Sanders Aeronautics gave a short presentation on what was being done at Sanders Aeronautics at Eagles

Nest airport in Ione, CA. I was sitting with a friend who is a member of the Maserati Club. We both thought the presentation so interesting that the idea of a joint Porsche Club/Maserati Club visit to Sanders Aeronautics was born. After getting Sandy’s OK and then the SVR board’s OK, our social chair began sending out info to SVR members. The response was unexpected. Shortly I had too many people wanting to go and had to create a waiting list. I apologize to those that weren’t able to go. This was a “destination” tour rather than the usual tour on curvy roads. We started at Marie Callender’s after the Saturday May 3 breakfast meeting. We went straight down Sunrise to the Jackson Highway and took it to Ione Road. With 24 cars, it was tough to stay together on Sunrise, but Rik Larson as the back door kept the group together and kept me informed as to what was happening (thanks, Rik) Once on Ione road we traveled on a strange circular route (with changing road names on narrow roads) to Eagles Nest. The entrance looks like the entrance to a private home. Since I was there last, they parked a jet aircraft in front of the house and when I saw the plane I missed the turn. After an entertaining tour of the Sanders’ driveway, everyone ar-rived safe and sound at the hangars. When we finally got to the little airport, two more Porsches joined us. We now had 26 cars and 44 people. Shortly after that about 15 Maseratis arrived. It made quite a line-up in front of the hangars. Our hosts were Sandy and Ruth Sanders, and were very gracious especially since were messing up their Saturday off from work. Sanders Aeronautics specializes in airborne self-contained smoke generator systems and is an industry leader in all aspects of aircraft restoration and maintenance. Founded by Frank Sanders in 1970 in Long Beach, the company moved to Chino, California in 1976 and then to their current place of business at Eagles Nest in Ione, California in 1996. Brothers Brian and Dennis Sanders share in the operation of the company, Brian overseeing the smoke generator division and Dennis the restoration division. The Sanders family is also well known throughout the “warbird” industry as the “Sea Fury Kings”

and has been an air racing dynasty at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada, where they have successfully raced their Hawker Sea Furies Dreadnought and Argonaut. (BTW: did you know that the propellers on British planes rotate in a different direction than those on American planes?) Sandy was the voice of the Reno Air Races for more than thirty years. Among other projects they are currently restoring a replica of one of the few early WW II German jets, which one day will fly out. Sanders has a machine shop and can fabricate essentially anything required to restore the planes. With parts becoming less and less available this is an important ability. Just as an example one of the planes they maintain is a Grumman F7F-3P Tigercat, which is one of only five flying examples in the world, and is flown regularly. In addition to the planes, also located at the site some interesting automobiles including a Pierce Arrow sedan, a Lamborghini, a vintage Chrysler 300, a Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing coupe, and a great ’68 912 purchased new by Ruth Sanders and used as a daily driver for a long time (no Kim, it is not for sale!) Add to this a number of different motorcycles, and a lot of interesting plane models.

We will leave at 9:00 A.M. from the IKEA parking lot just off I-80 and across the freeway from the California Highway Patrol Academy in

West Sacramento. There are gas stations in the area. Please have a full tank of gas, and bring a picnic lunch.

We will be visiting four wineries during the day, two of which will be memorable. At Benzinger Winery inGlenn Ellen there will be a tour through the vineyards on a tram pulled by a tractor and premium wine tasting. The second highlight will be a stop at the Rombauer Wineryon the Silverado Trail, which will include a tour of the caves with tasting in the caves, with snacks catered by Dean and DeLuca.
