team will lean heavily on the Gordon twins this season.

Caleb will be a starting halfback and safety as a senior, and his identical twin, Christian, will play re-ceiver, safety and punt.

Both were starters on defense last year, with Caleb at outside linebacker and Chris-tian at cornerback.

Not only have their roles expanded, but both are playing safety for the first time.

“It’s a little bit more challenging, you have to know more,” Christian said of his safety position. “You have to watch both sides of the field. It’s getting easier, though. It’s pretty much second nature now. I like safety because you get to hit more.”

Caleb said the twins make the most of the non-verbal com-munication skills that come

along with being twins.“We know what each other’s doing,”

Caleb said. “We don’t have to com-municate so much with each other, it’s more about talking to our team-mates. We talk about it when we get home and that helps us out a lot.”

The Gordon’s are among a class of 22 seniors that has helped turn Pied-mont’s program in the right direction.

The Panthers went 7-5 in 2009 and made the playoffs for the first time in five years after winning just once

in 2008 and twice in 2007.“The past couple of years a lot of

guys were more lackadaisical,” Caleb said. “It’s different now. Guys are a lot more intense, a lot more focused.”

Christian feels the Panthers are primed for success. “We’re 10 times quicker and faster than we were,” he said. “We’ve got a bunch of people back and we’ve got the biggest line in the county. Most of our starters are

seniors, so we’ll be experienced.”Caleb was a reserve running back

CuthbertsonThe secondary will be a strength for the Cavaliers in 2010 in the eyes of coach Mike Roark. Sophomore Emitt Afam is the starter at free safety. He took over the role midway through last season after an injury. “We have some talent back there,” said Roark, “we have some guys that didn’t play for us last year. It’s just a matter of getting them caught up and giving them an understanding of what we are trying to do.” Aidan and Evan Riney were the first game starters at cornerback for the Cavaliers a year ago as sopho-mores, but there’s more competition for starting jobs in the secondary this season.

Forest HillsAfter losing kicker Jamie Baker to graduation, the Yellow Jackets are working out two new players at the position, including sophomore Alan Tinico and junior Ben Polk. Tinico was the starting kicker for the junior varsity team last year. “Both of those guys are soccer boys and we’re looking at both of them,” said FH coach John Lowery. “Tinico has a big leg and he can kick the ball a long way.”

Marvin RidgeThe Spartans will have a number of players rotating in and out at defensive end this season, according to Mavs coach Scott Chadwick. Senior Chris Murphy (6-2, 180), junior Phil younis (5-10, 180), senior Thomas Bellucci (6-1, 190), senior Michael Moore (5-11, 190) and senior Jacob Cude (6-0, 180) are all expected to get playing time. “We’ve got four guys at defensive end that either started or played a consider-

able amount last season,” said Chadwick. “Next to receiver, defensive end is probably depth-wise our deepest position.”

MonroeThe Redhawks have to replace standout RBs Shamiir Hailey and Donnard Covington, who combined for 2,285 yards and 30 TDs in 2009. Senior Ricardo White has moved over from receiver to become the featured back. White is recovering from a groin injury, and if it lingers fullback Qwadarius Duboise will move to tailback and sophomore William Collins would also take on a more prominent role. Monroe QB Jalen Sowell believes the running game will remain effect. “You might see a little bit of a dropoff, but it won’t be much,” he said. “Ricardo has looked good. He picks stuff up real quick and he’s way faster than he was last year. Track helped him out a lot.”

ParkwoodAll football coaches covet big linemen who can move, and Parkwood rising junior Matt Brantley is one of them. Brantley stands roughly 6-foot-1 and weighed 323 pounds with his tennis shoes on in coach Nelson Rowell’s office after Friday morning’s practice. Where it gets interesting is the 40-yard-dash time Brantley turned in at the Wake Forest Junior Day camp. According to Rowell, Brantley scampered the 40 in 4.97 seconds. “One of the Wake Forest coaches called me and was like ‘Wow, he’s fast,’” Rowell said. Brantley, the county champion in the shot put, is also one of the school’s top students academically. “He’s got the grades to go wherever he wants,” Rowell said. Brantley will play on the left side, either at tackle or guard this season. “I think Matt and (Piedmont’s) Stewart Hinson will be the most domi-nant linemen in the county this year,” Rowell said.

PiedmontQB Sawyer Baucom (5-9. 165) played a key role in getting Piedmont’s offense in gear last season. Starting QB Ross Rushing (6-1, 185) went down with an injury, and Cameron Leviner was his backup, which meant the Panthers also lost their best receiver, The Panthers were 0-2 and averaging 5.0 points per game. Baucom, then a freshman, was inserted in the first quarter in a road game at Robinson in Week 3, and the Panthers pulled out a 20-14 victory. Against Monroe and Forest Hills, Baucom was a combined 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) for 160 yards and three touchdowns without an intercep-tion. Baucom gives the Panthers quality depth at QB, with Rushing, now a junior, returning for his third season as the starter. Piedmont coach Frank Ambrose speaks well of Baucom. “He did great things for us last year,” Ambrose said. “He’s our No. 2 quarterback ... but nobody gets a free pass. If Ross messes up, we’re not afraid to put Sawyer in there. I think the competition makes both of them better.” Ambrose plans to “sprinkle” Baucom in at receiver. “He’s got good hands,” Ambrose said. “He’s just a good football player.”

Porter RidgePorter Ridge will use senior Javonte’ Truesdale in all phases of the game. Truesdale did not play football in 2009 due to being academically ineligible. He starred for the track team last spring, anchoring the county champi-ons in the 4x100 and placing third in the 100 meters and 200 meters. “He’s a play maker and we will try to get the

ball in his hands whenever and however we can,” coach Blair Hardin said. “He’s a special talent and you can bet we’re going to use him every chance we get.”

Sun ValleyThe Spartans are taking part in a jamboree at South Meck High on Thursday. According to SV coach Scott Stein, 8-to-10 teams will be in attendance, including 4A state powers Butler and Independence. “My thinking in getting in on this scrimmage was to put ourselves up against good competition,” said Stein. “I don’t think it’s going to necessarily judge where we are at as a team, but where we can go. We aren’t going to judge ourselves as a good or bad team based on that scrimmage.”

Union AcademyAfter the first week of practice, Union Academy Cardinals remains healthy. Injuries are even more critical for 1A schools because they often carry less than 30 players. Monroe will have 28 to 30 varsity players and UA has 23. The Cardinals went a respectable 2-8-1 as a first-year program in 2009, and coach Lynn Keziah is expecting to be improved. “We’re looking pretty good after the first week,” Keziah said. “No injuries, just some bumps and bruises. I’m very pleased with their effort. The kids are just ready to get the pads on and get to work.” The Cardinals scrimmage at Hickory Grove next Saturday at 7 p.m.

Wed-dington lost first-team all-county safety Dominique Ardrey to graduation, but return the rest of the secondary. Junior Cole Finch, who has been a starting DB since he stepped on campus his fresh-man year, made second-team all-county as a sophomore.

MARSHVILLENo football team in Union County

has more to replace in its offensive backfield than Forest Hills High.

The Yellow Jackets graduated quarterback Juanne Blount along with starting tailbacks Canious Sturdivant and Orlando Ratliff.

Blount accounted for 102 touch-downs in his varsity career, includ-ing 84 rushing, 12 passing, three on kickoff returns, two on intercep-tion returns and one receiving. He was named Most Valuable Player in Union County by The Enquirer-Journal in his junior and senior seasons, when he combined for 4,280 rushing yards and 66 touchdowns.

Ratliff rushed for 641 yards and nine scores a season ago, while Sturdi-vant ran for 597 yards and five touch-downs.

Blount and Ratliff are currently on

scholarship at Gardner-Webb Univer-sity.

“We knew going in that we would have different people carrying the ball this year,” said Forest Hills coach John Lowery. “You can’t replace a kid like Blount, but we feel confident these new kids are going to do a good job.”

Lowery is expecting junior Labryan Chambers to take over at quarterback this season. A 6-foot-1, 190-pounder, Chambers missed most of last season after tearing his ACL in the second game of the year. In last year’s season opener against Anson County, Cham-bers completed his only pass attempt for 26 yards and a touchdown in a 21-14 loss. He also completed a pass for a two-point conversion.

Lowery said junior CJ Kiser (5-9, 165) is also getting reps at quarter-back, but Chambers will likely be the starter.

“Both of those guys do different things,” said Lowery. “Kiser is more

of a runner and Lebryan is more of a thrower. If the season started today, Lebryan would probably get the nod.”

Kiser and senior Deonta Vinson (5-9, 180) are expected to get most of the carries in the backfield.

Vinson was a reserve as a junior last season, racking up 251 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

“Vinson’s not as quick as Sturdi-vant, but he’s a hard runner like Rat-liff was,” said Lowery. “He’s a combi-nation of those two kids.”

Kiser was the junior varsity quar-terback last year, but also gained some varsity experience.

Lowery’s expecting both tailbacks to contribute right away.

“Both of those guys know the sys-tem and have some experience,” said Lowery. “We’re counting on them to kind of pick up where Juanne left off.”

Forest Hills opens the 2010 season on Aug. 20 at home against Anson.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — A year ago, Carl Edwards started 33rd in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International and fin-ished third. This time he’ll start at the front.

Edwards turned a lap of 124.432 mph in 70.882 seconds on Saturday to easily out-distance Jamie McMurray’s lap of 123.814 mph in 71.236 secs. It was just the fifth pole in 215 starts for Edwards, his first on a road course in Cup competition, and it was fast. Edwards was just a few ticks off Jeff Gordon’s 2003 track record of 124.58 mph in 70.7979 secs.

“Unbelievable! I can’t tell you how much that helps our team,” Edwards said. “(Crew chief) Bob (Osborne) said P1. I thought he said 21. That’s a great lap. We’re just enjoying the wave we’re riding. We’re making a comeback.”

And that should help team owner Jack Roush in his re-covery from a plane crash 10 days ago. The 68-year-old Roush, who also received a boost last week with Greg Biffle’s win at Pocono, is at the Mayo Clinic and will re-main there indefinitely to treat facial injuries.

Edwards has put together four straight finishes of sev-enth or better, including a second at Chicagoland and a

third a week ago at Pocono, to surge to 10th in the points standings with only five races remaining before the Chase for the Sprint Cup title. Only the top 12 drivers qualify for the Chase.

“It feels good,” said Ed-wards, whose last pole was two years ago at Bristol. “You guys know how we’ve strug-gled. This last month we’ve been in going in the right direction. It means a lot to all the folks who stuck with us — Aflac, Ford. Nobody’s giving up. If I can just get a good start, keep our car up front, race in clean air, keep the fenders on it, I think the qualifying effort will pay off.”

Juan Pablo Montoya will go off third, followed by AJ Allmendinger and Kurt Busch. Five-time Watkins Glen winner Tony Stewart, Biffle, Scott Speed, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch round out the top 10.

Marcos Ambrose, who fin-ished second to Stewart in last year’s race, will start 11th. Gordon, a four-time Watkins Glen winner, quali-fied 16th and his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale

Earnhardt Jr. was 41st.Greg Biffle was fastest in

both of Friday’s practices. Coming off his win at Po-cono, his first of the season, and sitting 11th in the stand-ings, Biffle said he decided to look at the big picture.

“I ran a bit conservative,” Biffle said. “Getting up to speed I noticed that the car was a little bit freer than what it was yesterday. I figured if I could back off just a little bit, run a good, solid lap rather than make a mistake, be in

the ditch, and have to come from the

back. I’m really thinking about the Chase right now.”

two practices despite feed-back from Gordon, who took part in a Goodyear tire test in June and thought he had brought some valuable data back to the shop. Only John-son found enough speed to crack the top 10 in qualify-ing.

“With the tire test that Jeff was a part of, it’s just kind of mind-boggling that we could have been that far off,” said Johnson, who notched the first road course victory

of his career at Sonoma in June. “Making up ground, I hope we can make up enough before the race.”

Gordon, winless at the sto-ried track since 2001, quali-fied at 122.783 mph, a vast im-provement from practice.

“I felt some real posi-tive things in the car,” said Gordon, who has made 602 straight Cup starts. “The car turned a little bit better than I was expecting. I saw some things that have some real potential. I’m very happy about that. It’s certainly a big gain from yesterday. I’m excited about that.”

Ambrose, still seeking that breakthrough Cup victory, started from the pole in Sat-urday’s Nationwide race and was confident about Sunday. He finished second to Stew-art a year ago in the Cup race and third to Kyle Busch in 2008 after starting last.

“I was a little conserva-tive,” said Ambrose, who handed that Sonoma victory to Johnson when he stalled his car under a late caution while leading and couldn’t get it refired in time to keep pace. “I got some wheel spin but I’m excited. I feel like we’re going to have a good car for Sunday. It’s part of the sport. No matter where you are in the field, you’ve got to go.”

bathia and the New York Yan-kees hardly envisioned this kind of start Saturday — the sight of Alex Rodriguez writhing on the ground, medical personnel run-ning to his side.

Struck on the inside of his left ankle by a sharp grounder in batting practice, Rodriguez managed to get up and walk to the locker room. X-rays were negative, though it’s uncertain when the All-Star third baseman will return to the lineup.

“Do I expect him to play to-morrow? I have no idea,” Yan-kees manager Joe Girardi said after a 5-2 win over the Boston

“He was in a substantial amount of pain,” Girardi said.

Once the game began, the Yankees were fine. Sabathia out-pitched John Lackey, Ramiro Pena drove in two runs while subbing for the injured Rodri-guez and New York stopped its mini-slide.

“It’s what we needed. CC stepped up for us today,” Girardi said.

Sabathia was hardly his domi-nant self. Instead, as shadows crept across the field, the big left-hander was extremely efficient. He posted his first win against the Red Sox this year after his other three starts all resulted in

cially tough on David Ortiz. The Boston slugger struck out three times and grounded into a dou-ble play in his other at-bat.

Mariano Rivera closed in the ninth for his 23rd save in 25 chances.

Lackey (10-7) was in trouble for most of his six innings. He’s won only once in his last seven starts, not what a Red Sox team running out of time needs down the stretch. Boston fell to 4-6 against the Yankees this year — the clubs play eight more times this season, including two in this wraparound series.

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ryan Palmer is one of those players who can’t walk by a leader-board without looking. Even with his name at the top, he had to stare at the board a long time to get a feel for what was going on Saturday in the Bridgestone Invitational.

He was in good company. There was a lot of company.

Scoring was so good that seven players were tied for the lead with about three hours left in the third round. When the round was over, not much had changed.

Palmer, who birdied three of his last five holes for a 7-under 63, shared the lead with Sean O’Hair, who had a 64. But with

21 players separated by five shots, all that meant was they would be the last to tee off Sun-day.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re in the lead or one shot back, two shots back. It doesn’t matter,” O’Hair said. “There’s 18 holes of golf left, and in my opinion, there’s no leaders. It’s just a shootout.”

That’s about what it was Sat-urday.

Not only did 10 players shoot 67 or better at venerable Fire-stone, there were 35 rounds in the 60s.

That list didn’t include sev-en-time Firestone champion Tiger Woods. He went through the motions on his way to a 75,

finishing another poor round some two hours before the lead-ers even teed off. Woods was 20 shots behind, in 78th place out of 80 players in this World Golf Championship.

He declined to speak to the media for the second straight day, telling a PGA Tour of-ficial that he drove it terrible, hit his irons terrible and didn’t putt well. That would ex-plain his worst score ever at Firestone, and his third straight round over par, having shot par or better every round at this course since 2006.

Phil Mickelson also failed to

break par, but he’s still in the tournament, and still has a shot to replace Woods at No. 1 in the world.

It was easy to find Mickelson on the South Course, for the gallery was cheering his every move. But he didn’t help himself off the tee, often scrambling for par, and he stumbled coming in with two bo-geys for a 71.

That dropped him into a tie for 10th, four shots out of the lead. Mickel-son would have to finish

alone in fourth place to reach No. 1 in the world ranking for the first time in his career.

His focus is on winning

the tournament, and he’s not alone. Mickelson was among 15 players separated by only four shots going into the final round on a Firestone course that has given up plenty of low scores with its soft, smooth greens and rough that is not nearly as dense as it has been in previ-ous years.

“I didn’t play very well today and made some bogeys on the back nine that were costly,” Mickelson said. “The good news is I’m only four back, and that’s in striking distance. I also get to play well ahead of the leaders, so if I can get off to a hot start, I can put some pres-sure on the guys.”

Passing game struggles in scrimmageCHARLOTTE (AP) — Much of

the talk during the first 1 1/2 weeks of training camp focused on the im-provements the Carolina Panthers made in the passing game after fin-ishing 27th in the league last year.

However, it didn’t look that way at Saturday’s Fan Fest scrimmage.

The first-team offense managed just two first downs in three posses-sions as quarterback Matt Moore finished 4 of 9 for 26 yards while an experienced offensive line looked out of synch and allowed regular pres-sure from the second-team defense.

The second-team offense wasn’t any better. Led by quarterbacks Hunter Cantwell and Jimmy Claus-en, it managed just one first down during its 12-play sequence.

The only points of the scrimmage came when the third-team offense managed to get in field goal range for veteran kicker John Kasay.

“The defense was ahead of the of-fense,” coach John Fox said. “But I think that’s typical every year. But I’m pleased with the effort and pleased we got through healthy.”

Although Carolina’s offense was without wide receiver Steve Smith, right tackle Jeff Otah and three of their top four running backs, the outcome was still a little surpris-ing.

Carolina’s passing game had looked sharp throughout camp, moving the ball with regular-ity against a restructured defense that’s trying to replace six starters

from last year’s team.“If you look at training camp,

the offense has done a good job of establishing the run against us and pushing us around and being pretty dominant,” said Pro Bowl lineback-er Jon Beason. “But now you come out here today and it’s the first live situation where it’s no holding back and for us to come out here and dominate — well, that’s very encouraging for us.”

Things might have been different had Moore completed a long bomb to wide receiver Kenny Moore, but that potential big gainer end-ed with the ball slipping just out of the receiver’s outstretched arms.

“I thought I had it for a second,” Kenny Moore said.

Matt Moore, whose only first-down completions went to Wallace Wright and Dwayne Jarrett, said it’s important not to read too much into one scrimmage.

The Panthers have a bigger test Thursday night when they open the preseason at Baltimore.

“There were some little things, but correctable stuff,” Moore said. “I can’t even put my finger on what exactly it was. But we completed some balls and moved the chains a little. But we’ll learn from some things out here. But I’m not disap-pointed at all.”

Offensive tackle Jordan Gross

said the first-team offensive line, which is supposed to be one of the strengths of the team, didn’t have a very good day.

“Well, you want to go out and score 12 touchdowns if you’re going to run 12 plays -- and we were a long way from that,” Gross said. “But it’s a little bit of a test where we’re at. We definitely have more work to do.

I was happy to see our defense do so well because I know

it’s a question a lot of people have.”

Gross said it makes no sense to read into Moore’s statistics for a scrimmage.

“If he would have thrown 10 touchdowns I

wouldn’t be saying that he’s the MVP of this league either,” Gross said. “So it’s OK. It’s no big deal.”

For Clausen, the team’s second-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, it was his first time playing inside Bank of America Stadium.

Clausen said he had a few butter-flies Saturday morning.

“A little bit, sure,” Clausen said. “I was excited to come out of that tunnel for the first time, hopefully the first of many times. But it was a good day out here. It was excited to see all of the fans come out and support the Panthers.”

The Panthers have today off and return to training camp in Spartan-burg, S.C., on Monday.

That’s a pretty impressive list of drivers that 31-year-old Kevin Conway is about to join as NA-SCAR Sprint Cup rookie of the year. And that it will come by default — he’s the only first-year driver competing in all 36 races for Bob Jenkins’ Front Row Mo-torsports team — doesn’t really matter.

“You’ve got to give him cred-it,” said Stewart, who won three races, led more than 1,200 laps, and finished fourth in points as a rookie in 1999. “He was able to attract a major sponsor that’s been very good to him. It’s been

good for the sport, too. Anytime you can bring in a major com-pany like that is good. There’s pluses and negatives to him be-ing there.”

Conway’s Ford, sponsored by ExtenZe, has competed in every race since skipping the season-opening Dayto-na 500 with a best finish of 14th at Daytona last month. Conway will start today’s Cup race at Watkins Glen Interna-tional on owner points in 42nd after a qualify-ing lap of 118.292 mph, nearly 4 seconds off the time of polesitter Carl Edwards.

“It’s really tough to get your rhythm going on a road course on one lap,” Conway said. “For our 31st lap at Watkins Glen,

we’ll take it. We picked up a lot of speed. Every time we’ve been on the track we’ve gotten bet-ter, so I guess that’s the main thing.”

Stewart says he wouldn’t want to be a rookie today.

“The cars are more technical, the level of competition’s gone up, so you have to be right when you get there (to the track),” he said. “A lot of things were differ-ent. Back in the day, it was guys that could ab-solutely just manhandle a car and force it to do something that it wasn’t

necessarily doing on the race-track that made the difference. Nowadays, you’ve really got to concentrate on making sure you’ve got your car driving good

because that’s what you’re go-ing to have for the race.”

TWEETER SILENCED: Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin is cutting his time on Twitter.

Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 Toyota, was fined by NASCAR for comments he made on the popular social website as NA-SCAR clamps down on public criticism. The sport’s ruling body expects a code of silence when it comes to publicly lash-ing out against it. If drivers do, they’ll be fined.

Hamlin said that NASCAR catalogued his tweets and showed them to him in a private meeting when he was hit with the fine.

“I’d say half of the time that I was on there I was discussing NASCAR stuff and whatnot,”

Hamlin said at WGI as he pre-pared for Sunday’s Cup race. “They really don’t want me go-ing there, so I’m not going to go there. It’s just one of those things.

“I’m still part of that stuff, but obviously with getting a fine and everything, you’ve got to be a little bit more careful.”

“Steven was a big loss,” Caleb said. “He was a big power back, and that will be my responsibility this year, is to get those tough yards.”

Caleb is 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, up from 165 a season ago.

“I’ve been training pretty hard,” he said. “It’s going to be tough. I gained a lot of weight and hope-fully that’s going to help me out.”

Piedmont coach Frank Ambrose wanted to get Caleb further from the line of scrimmage on defense.

“We don’t want to have Caleb mak-ing contact on every play because he’s a running back, and our best return-ing running back,” Ambrose said. “I didn’t want him at two spots where you can get hammered on every play.”

Caleb had one of his best games of the season against powerhouse Monroe last season, rushing 15 times for 98 yards. The Redhawks won the contest 49-24.

Christian expects Monroe, com-ing off an 11-0 season, to once again be the team to beat in the Rocky River Conference.

“Monroe for sure is going to be our toughest game,” Christian said. “They lost Issac Blakeney and Shamiir Hailey, but they will still have a bunch of athletes.”

The Gordons will help Pied-mont open the season on Aug. 20 at Parkwood. The Panthers host Monroe in Week 5 on Sept. 17.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — After a 32-year wait, Dick LeBeau fi-nally was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Satur-day night.

“Man, this really is a great day to be alive,” said LeBeau, elected by the senior commit-tee and the first of seven men who entered the shrine.

LeBeau, now 73 years old, was chosen for his 14-year career as a cornerback with the Detroit Lions, even though he’s best known as an assistant coach, the mastermind of the zone blitz. Currently the defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers, LeBeau singled out his players who sat in a corner of Fawcett Stadium.

“I am being inducted as a player and believe me that makes me most proud,” LeBeau said. “I did that for 14 years. but for the last 38 years I have been a football coach.

“They are here,” he added, pointing to the Steelers, who he helped win two Super Bowls in the last five seasons. “That’s just about the highest compli-ment ever paid to me in my life.”
