    VSL CHAMPIONSHIP

    The VSL Mariners defeated the VSL Cubs 11-8 in 12 innings yesterday to win the 2013 VSLChampionship 2-0. It was the VSL Mariners first VSL Championship, after finishing losing in theChampionship game in 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2005.

    INF/OF Yordi Calderon hit .343 (82x239) with 68 runs scored, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runsand 42 RBI in 68 games. He led VSL in on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.590),runs scored, (68) and extra-base hits (34), while also ranking T1st in games (68), 2nd in hits,doubles, home runs and average and T4th in RBI. Teammate INF/OF Gianfranco Wawoe hit .328(80x244) with 63 runs scored, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 30 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 68

    games with the VSL Mariners. Wawoe ranked amongst the league leaders in nearly every offensivecategory, including T1st in games played, 2nd in on-base percentage (.415) and runs scored, 3rd inhits and stolen bases, 4th in doubles and at-bats, T4th in extra-base hits (29) and 5th in average.

    Starters Kevin Gadea and Pablo Lopez have combined to go 16-2 with a 2.61 ERA (40 ER, 138.0IP) in 26 starts. Gadea went 9-1 with a 2.65 ERA (21 ER, 71.1 IP) in 14 starts. He finished tied forthe VSL league lead in wins and starters, while finishing 2nd in innings pitched and 5th in ERA.Lopez finished 2nd in the league in WHIP (0.93) and opponent average (.209) and 4th in ERA(2.57) and wins (7). Overall he went 7-1 with a 2.57 ERA (19 ER, 66.2 IP) in 12 starts. RH HectorHidalgo led the team with 7 saves, while RH Jonathan Jimenez and RH Osmel Morales eachrecorded 5 saves. Despite being used primarily as a reliever, Morales finished 2nd in the VSL instrikeouts, striking out 66 batters in 53.1 innings

    RECAP: LF Stefen Romero hit a grand slam home run in the top of the 7th inning as Tacomasnapped a 2-2 tie to defeat Albuquerque 6-2 on Thursday night. Romero (3x4, R, GS HR, 5 RBI)led the team with 3 hits, while driving in 5 of the Rainiers 6 runs. CFAbraham Almonte (1x2, 2 R,HR, RBI, 3 BB), 2B Ty Kelly (1x4, R, BB), 1B Rich Poythress (1x3, BB), C Brandon Bantz (1x4)and SS Carlos Triunfel (1x3, 2 R) each recorded 1 of the teams 8 hits.     REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Franklin Gutierrez was returned from his third rehabilitationassignment (J uly 19-Aug. 5) with Tacoma, but remains on the 15-day disabled list. Overall he isbatting .219 (34x155) with 22 runs scored, 10 doubles, 3 home runs, 22 RBI, 10 walks and 2 stolenbases in 37 games with AAA Tacoma. Gutierrez was placed on the 15-day DL on J une 25 with astrained right hamstring. He appeared in 2 games (J une 22-23) after being activated from thedisabled list on J une 22. Gutierrez was on the disabled list from April 23-J une 21 with the sameinjury (right hamstring strain). Gutierrez was batting .267 (15x60) with 8 runs scored, 4 doubles, 5home runs (3 leadoff HR) and 11 RBI in 18 games (15 GS in CF) this season for Seattle. This is the6th trip to the DL for Gutierrez since the start of the 2011 season.

    OF NOTE: INF Ty Kelly has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games, batting .366 (15x41) with 5 rusnscored, 5 RBI, 6 walks and 2 stolen bases. Walker is currently the youngestplayer in the PCL this season and 2nd-youngest in Triple-A. He made his Triple-A debut vs. Fresnoon J une 25 at Cheney Stadium (W, 6.0,3,0,0,2,4). Walker is the youngest Rainiers pitcher to makehis Triple-A debut since a 19-year-old Felix Hernandez on April 8, 2005 at Fresno.

    RECAP: The Generals combined for 24 hits in the teams 2nd doubleheader sweep of the season as J ackson defeated Mississippi onThursday night. 2B Chris Taylorrecorded 3 hits J ackson defeated Mississippi 4-1 in game 1. Taylor(3x4, R), RF Julio Morban (2x4), DJi-Man Choi (2x4), 1B Daniel Paolin i (2x4, 2 RBI) and LF Leon Landry (2x2, R, BB, SB) each recorded multi-hit games as the Generalsout-hit the Braves 14-6. Starter Jimmy Gillheeney (5.0,6,1,1,1,2,HR) recorded his 5th win with Jackson (7th overall in 2013), allowing ona solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. He ranked 2nd in the Southern Leagueduring the week with 10 RBI, including 3 consecutive mulit-RBI games from J uly 29-31. Choi lifted a 0-2 fastball over the fence in right for

    his 2nd grand slam this season on J uly 31 vs. Huntsville. It was part of a 4-run 7th and it helped propel J ackson to the 7-3 victory.
