This spreadsheet was written in Excel 2007. Earlier versions or generic versions may not work correctly.
All cells are unprotected. Be very careful to not change anything. For most users, use only the cells that
are shaded. Do not use any other cells. Advanced users can change anything.
This spreadsheet is for natural gas, as 100% Methane. This is approximately correct for processed natural
gas used by consumers and utilities, although it is not exactly correct. This spreadsheet is not for natural
gas from the well before processing.
This spreadsheet is not intended to substitute for Building Code methods. Use Building Code methods
where required! The NFPA 54 result and tab are provided for your review.
Comments about Accuracy -
The calculations are based on the Darcy-Weisbach equation and friction factor as adapted from the
ASHRAE 2009 Fundamentals Handbook. Accuracy is limited by how well these methods actually model
real fluid flow. Dividing the pipe into 10 intervals for recalculation of properties and velocity is a good
simulation, but of course dividing the pipe into even more intervals would increase the accuracy.
The spreadsheet has been tested against the results of commonly published results. You may wish to do
the same to assure yourself of accuracy and reasonableness.
Frequently you do not know the condition of the inside wall of the pipe, whether there is any film, scale
or corrosion on it, or what is the true roughness. These limit the accuracy of any calculation. Commonly
published results assume new, clean pipe. The spreadsheet lets you add a thickness onto the inside pipe
wall, if you want to see how that affects the results.
Accuracy also depends on whether the Fluid Properties in the spreadsheet truly represent your fluid.
Standard data may be for a temperature different than your fluid temperature. The density and viscosity
of your fluid could be significantly different. For air and gases, standard data may be for dry and pure air
or gases, but your air or gases may not be dry or pure. You can put in your own fluid property data, if you
want.
Where flow is in the transitional condition between laminar and turbulent, the friction factor is between
limits but otherwise not known, so the results are less accurate. Fortunately, most flow problems are not
in this condition. In transitional flow, this program assigns a friction factor on a straight line between the
known high limit of laminar and known low limit of turbulent. You do have the option of changing the
Reynolds numbers defining where those limits occur. One of the columns in the results indicates whether
the flows are Laminar, transitional or Turbulent.
If you change the formulas or data values to become more accurate, consider these potential problems:
(1) Your results may be different than commonly published results. Other reviewers of your results may
then question why your results do not match commonly published results. (2) Your interfacing
equipment such as fans or pumps may be tested or rated at standardized conditions. So you will have to
consider how your results at non-standard conditions should be applied to selecting your fan or pump.
Pressure Loss per 100 feet: This result is commonly used in engineering to predict pressure loss in any
length of pipe. It is included here because it is a commonly expected result. Be aware that in
compressible flow, the pressure loss rate is changing all the way down the length of the pipe. So a
pressure loss rate learned from a particular length of pipe will not accurately predict the pressure loss in
any other length of pipe.
An advantage of this spreadsheet is that if you are familiar with applying the Darcy equation and friction
factor and are familiar with Excel, you can examine the calculations, to satisfy yourself that the results
are reliable.
Bugs / Limitations
In any one display of the Home Page, there is only a single place to input thickness of coating or scale,
and pipe roughness. This keeps the input simple. Unfortunately if you want coating/scale/roughness
different values for different pipes, you cannot get them on the same display. This is a problem if some of
your pipes are steel and some are copper. You will have to look at the whole display with one set of
coating/scale/roughness values, and then look at the whole display with a different set of
coating/scale/roughness values. I apologize for this inconvenience.
