HOW SOLAR COOLING WORKS
Solar collectors capture sun’s energy to make high temperature heat
 Absorption chillers cool buildings
Cooling towers and/or boreholes discard both heat flows

Implications
Cooling loads do not reduce due to lower sunlight
In summer peaks, loads can increase during periods of lower sun
Storage is important – especially cold water storage
Ideally store ‘cold’ for several days
Ice storage requires lower COP ammonia chillers (potential safety issue)
Fuel or grid back-up required if no without storage.

Case study – office, design phase
5 blocks of 1,000 sq m of office space
4,100 sq m rental space –rapid build
 2 stories
 720 person occupancy
Central 150 RT 2-effect chiller, fed by steam from 10 6-module arrays of HD16
More than half load in summer is dehumidification of 10 l/p/s make-up air
2-effect chiller dehumidifier appears more economic than desiccant wheel.
 Propane and grid ‘back-up’
