Speaking in a barely audi-ble voice, former Goochland Treasurer Brenda S. Grubbs pled guilty to all 20 charg-es against her at her Aug. 9 arraignment in Goochland Circuit Court.

Arrested on Feb 2. of this year and charged with embezzling county funds and money laundering, Grubbs will be sentenced Dec. 13.

Her defense attorney, James Maloney, described

Grubbs as suffering from physical and mental ail-ments that made her easy prey for an online preda-tor, who persuaded Grubbs to wire money to an email address in Nigeria.

“She exhausted her own funds first,” said Maloney.

Special Prosecutor Jeffrey Haislip did not object to Grubbs remaining free on bond pending sentencing.

He put the total amount embezzled from the county at about $185,000.

Grubbs faces a maximum

penalty of 410 years on the charges.

If money is a factor, then the race for the Republican nomination for the State Senate seat in the newly cre-ated 22nd Senate District could be a two man race.

Of the five candidates who will appear on the pri-mary ballot on Aug. 23rd, Bryan Rhode, an assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the City of Richmond who lives in Crozier, and Tom Garrett, the Louisa County Commonwealth Attorney who lives in Bumpass, have raised the most money.

As of the reporting period

that ended June 30, 2011, Rhode had raised $125,197 and had cash on hand of $108,809. Rhode’s total includes $50,000 in loans, including a personal loan to his campaign for $12,500 and another $12,500 loan from his wife, Lynne.

Garrett had raised $80,449 and had $68,531 listed as cash on hand. His campaign didn’t list any loans, but Garrett did receive an additional $33,000 gift from Del. Bill Janis, R-Henrico, in mid-July to push his total raised to $120,000.

The other candidates are Brian Bates whose num-bers are $55,032 raised with $44,761 cash in hand. Mark

Peake reported $49,123 raised with $44,761 remain-ing, and Claudia Tucker had raised $12,085 and still had $8,759.

In a press release on Aug. 4, Janis endorsed Garrett.

“I’ve worked with Bill Janis and others at the state level on many bills,” Garrett said in an interview Thursday. “Recently, three bills I had worked on were considered and only one passed and became law. That’s when I decided I needed to run for this Senate seat.”

Garrett and Rhode are both supporters of the Second Amendment.

“I have an A-rating from the NRA,” Garrett said. “When I was a boy, I’d come home from school each day and head for the woods to shoot at cans.”

Rhode believes more gun control legislation isn’t need-ed.

“The more gun con-trol laws we have, the more restrictions you are putting on law abiding citizens,” he said. “Gun control laws do not impinge on people who use guns in an inappropri-ate or violent manner. If anything, we should remove some of the present restric-tions we have on gun own-ers.”

The 22nd district includes all of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland and Prince Edward counties and parts of Louisa County and the city of Lynchburg. With such a large district, is there any commonality and how important is it for a candi-date to win his home base area?

Goochland artist likes to tell stories in her paintings


Eleanor Herweyer has been painting for about 20 years, if you don’t count her dabbling in water colors as a child.

She likes to tell stories in her work and said she uses people to do that.

One of her favorite pieces is entitled “Nostalgia,” which shows an older couple return-ing to the church where they were married.

“They are in the sun-set of their lives,” explained Herweyer.

“Nostalgia” is just one of the 30 paintings by Herweyer on display until Sept. 30 at the Virginia Eye Institute near the Huguenot Bridge. Eleanor and her husband Elliot talked about the display and her career as a self-taught artist in an interview at the institute last Friday.

She grew up in Bland County and received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Radford College and then taught school for 20 years, at Cardwell E.S., Goochland Elementary School and Huguenot Academy.

“I was her first principal at Cardwell in 1960,” said Elliot. He was also the subject of her first painting, called “The Inventor,” an apt title as Elliot is the president of H2o Tec, Inc., a company that grew out of his invention of a water treatment device for hard water. Later Elliot invented a bypass valve and one thing led to another and the former math and science teacher and principal started his own business. The couple, who married in 1980, are now manufacturers’ repre-sentatives.

Eleanor said she painted at first just for relaxation but

“over the years I painted more and more.”

Her favorite medium is acrylic, she said.

“It lends itself to mixing so many things into it for mixed media,” she explained.

She describes her paint-ing style as a combination of impressionism and real-ism but said she leans more toward realism in her portrait work.

“I know I’m not abstract,” she said.

The current exhibit is Eleanor’s largest and prints of her work are offered for sale at prices ranging from $120 to $450. Ten percent of the proceeds of the sales will be donated to the Virginia Eye Institute Foundation.

Eleanor said her future painting projects include doing some scenes of Bland County, where she grew up and also paintings with a patriotic theme.

The Hermitage Country Club golf courses have achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. Hermitage Country Club is the 27th course in Virginia and the 824th in the world to receive the honor.

“Hermitage Country Club has shown a strong commit-ment to its environmental

program. They are to be com-mended for their efforts to pro-vide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,” said Jim Sluiter, Staff Ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs.

where he will face off against incumbent Malvern R. “Rudy” Butler.

In an interview at his home in Kinloch last Friday, Minnick talked about why he entered the race. It is his first time running for elective office.

“It all boils down to lead-ership,” said Minnick. “I haven’t seen that from my opponent,” noting that Butler said he would not run again in 2007.

Minnick grew up in Ordway, Colorado in farming and ranching country and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1979 with a Bachelor of Social Work Degree. His ROTC commit-ment took him into the Army, where he served 21 years. After his retirement from the Army in 2001 following a career in the Medical Service Corps, during which time he earned a Masters Degree from American University, Minnick entered the com-mercial health sector. A job change brought him and his wife Cathy to the Central Virginia area and they bought a home in Kinloch in 2006.

He joined the Kinloch

Advisory Board in 2007 and began to hear more about the water problems of the area.

“We couldn’t get any straight answers,” recalled Minnick, relating a series of contacts with county admin-istration and the Board of Supervisors.

“The direction of the Board of Supervisors in the last five or six years is taking us in the opposite direction of where we need to go,” said Minnick, who indicated little progress has been made with the TCSD debt problem.

“We still don’t have a reso-lution to that back loaded debt issue that is going to affect the residents and the county in future years,” said Minnick, who said the board has “spent the last nine years ruminating over the problem. We’re not going to be able to tax our way out of that.”

But Minnick said the TCSD is not the only issue but a symptom of a larger problem with county govern-ment.

“We’ve watched as the board sat there kind of like a cow looking at a new gate,” said Minnick of its response to the current economic downturn.

“There are no ideas com-

ing out of that current Board of Supervisors,” he said.

On the subject of rela-tions with the School Board, Minnick said he thinks the supervisors should “exercise some fiduciary responsibil-ity,”

Minnick said that he was against the vote by the board to raise the salaries of the next Board of Supervisors.

“I don’t think the supervi-sors should be paid at all other than travel expenses incurred in the line of duty,” he said in response to an emailed ques-tion after the interview.

Minnick praised the work of new Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson.

“I think she is a shining star, but she is encumbered by the Board of Supervisors,” he said.

Minnick said he is in favor of maintaining the current 53 cents per hundred real estate tax.

“My stance is no increase in taxes. The tax rate is ade-quate – the issue is economic development to help resolve the effects of the TCSD bond issue,” he said.

Minnick said to blame the county’s financial predica-ment on the current economic downturn is giving up the lead-

ership role.“There are other places

doing fine,” he said.Minnick said he favors pro-

active zoning to help solve the stagnating broad band prob-lem, to encourage the construc-tion of towers and accelerate the process of adopting an eco-nomic plan and hiring an eco-nomic development director.

On the controversial man-dated Urban Development Areas, Minnick said, “I’m not thrilled with any kind of state mandate. Planning is good as long as it’s rational and reason-able for the community and there is no mandate to comply with something that may be unfunded or untenable.”

Running as an Independent Republican, Minnick said he decided only a few weeks ago to run and so was not able to vie for the Republican Party endorsement.

Minnick said his opponent was on the board that created the TCSD and has been part of a board that has shown a pat-tern of mismanagement.

Minnick said he can do a better job.

“I’m running because I know I can do a better job making the county more liv-able and more inviting for business,” said Minnick.

the candidates live, we’re really from five different geographic areas within the district,” he said. “You have to win your home base. Whoever wins the nomination will probably dominate in the area where he or she lives, and then do well, probably not win, but do well in other candidate’s home areas.”

Rhode wants to see pub-lic education putting more emphasis on technical degrees.

“Virginia needs more edu-

cational choices, specifically technical degrees,” he said. “Virginia allows for the award-ing of technical degrees, but very few school systems pro-vide them. We need to shift some resources from more traditional precollege tracks to more technical and occu-pational degrees in area like computers and robotics.

“We need programs like this for our kids that don’t want to go to college to give them the skills to get good, high paying jobs when they graduate,” Rhode added. “We need to create a pool of high-skill labor that will be attractive to high-tech manufacturing

“I was concerned about child pornography and got together with the sheriff. We discussed the program and decided we wanted to do it,” he said. “We started it, and it didn’t cost the taxpayers a penny. We have caught and convicted dozens of child predators and sent them to prison.”

Garrett and Rhode are proud military veterans. Garrett was in the U.S. Army, and Rhode was in the Marines.

opened the floor for public com-ment, the bottom fell out.

Over the next hour, citizen after citizen came to the podium and told horror stories about their dealings with Verizon.

Archie Martin said he arranged for a package of Verizon services before moving to Goochland several years ago. When he moved in, he was told the services weren’t available in the county.

Fred Fidecoat talked about having good service for awhile and then it went down. When he called Verizon service, the conver-sation was unbelievable.

“I tried talking with them about their problems, and they refused to take a work order from me. They actually wanted me to go out and fix their equipment,”

Fidecoat said. “I finally talked to a supervisor whose first name is Mitch, and he hung up on me. As a result of that conversation, I filed a complaint with the State Corporation Commission.”

Tammy Roberts owns a florist and rehashed her problems with Verizon that she said cost her business and at least $2,000 in lost wages.

When the Supervisors took a break, Funka was surrounded in the hallway as he tried to leave by Roberts and others expressing their displeasure face-to-face.

When asked if he expected the public outcry he received by coming to the meeting, he answered, “No comment.”

He also answered “no com-ment” when asked if Verizon could do anything to help its dis-satisfied customers as he headed out the door to a waiting car.

Quarles reminded the angry

citizens on several occasions that the Board of Supervisors couldn’t solve their prob-lems.

“We can listen and try to communicate their problems to Verizon,” he said. “In the end, it’s up to Verizon to resolve their complaints.”

The Board also heard a presentation from Powhatan County representatives about the water intake facility they

want to build on the James River. The county would take 10 million gallons of water a day from the river, with a peak of 15 million gallons.

“We’ve always been able to work well as partners with Powhatan County,” said Goochland County adminis-trator Rebecca Dickson. “We look forward to working with them on the design of their intake plant.”

Writer favors Rhode for new State Senate seat

If you seek authentic, positive, values driven leadership in the Virginia Senate, look carefully at the candidates, then vote for Bryan Rhode on August 23rd. That’s the advice of a book I once read on Zen Buddhism. It’s a talent that surely might have come in handy last Monday as the Dow Jones tum-bled by more than 600 points.

Many folks probably rushed to their computers or employed their handheld electronic gizmos to make impulsive decisions they may regret later. Most likely involving selling shares of stock in companies for which they once paid a much higher price.

Of course by the time our read-ers get this edition of the Gazette the market may have gyrated even more wildly in either direction.

What does seem clear is that the long ride of the baby boomers is com-ing closer to its end, along with all the distortions it has caused the nation’s economy.

Starting in the 1950s, they, and I count myself among them, enjoyed an unparalleled period of prosper-ity. The big demographic bump they formed moved through the popula-tion snake and now is getting ready to exit, changing its behavior now that the juices of youth are dried up and their thoughts turn to retirement.

The same folks who once bought the dot.com stocks with abandon and got burned, only to rebuild their sav-ings are now flocking to buy bonds that yield less than 1950s passbook savings accounts once did. Just so they’ll have some money left to sup-plement Uncle Sam’s Social Security check and whatever company pension or retirement plan they may have.

Folks younger than we soon to be geezers will be left to fend for them-

selves, retiring at 67, 68, 69 or 70 if they’re lucky, as they are required to support us old timers in our dotage. Selfish as always, we had fewer kids than our parents before us .

Youngsters in their 20s and 30s, Lord knows what sort of financial future they will face if the nation can’t figure a way to live within its means.

Our recent foray into the streets of Goochland by senior reporter Jim Fields is still generating comments on our Web site. Seems folks like to hear what others are thinking, so we’re planning on making it a regular thing.

With that in mind, we thought it a good idea to ask readers what ques-tions our roving reporter should ask. Wealth destruction what it’s all about

What does the debt ceiling represent to us average citi-zens and how will it impact our and our children’s futures? This question was asked by the Gazette to a number of local residents. The issue is how much can we borrow and from whom do we bor-row from? People rightly talk about China and Japan, our biggest lenders from outside the USA.

But, the biggest lender is you and me. All that money that we pay into social secu-rity, doesn’t go into a CD, we get an IOU. The IOU is

from our government, that amount is larger than what we borrow from China and Japan. If this was a business, it would be busted as the big-gest Ponzi scheme ever. The perpetrators of this would end up in jail. What do we do, we reelect them and con-tinue to trust in their ability to do the right thing for the country, not for their party, not for themselves but for us common jerks. Move over Bernie Madoff.

Accountability is lacking, unless you post pictures on Face book. Do we need Face book absurdities to let us know that folks in Washington are not above the law or sani-ty? Though they can easily get cushy jobs in Hollywood after helping destroy the home mortgage market, boy, does that sound like punishment. People are concerned about the claim that this Federal

Administration is all about redistribution of wealth. Look around, it is about wealth destruction for all. That is the kind of equality I didn’t vote for.

Benedictine needs new location

I attended my first and possibly last meeting of the Goochland Planning Commission on July 21, 2011.

I watched the two lawyers representing Benedictine go thru a set of maps, quotes from VDOT, health depart-ment numbers, utility options, you name it, most of which was rather vague.

I was a witness to over 20 people speaking against

building the high school on River Rd. There were eight people who spoke in favor, two of which lived in Henrico County.

The chairman and four rep-resentatives to his right asked very few questions, and as the input from people who lived in the River Rd. corridor began their conversations, I took note of a somewhat blank stare (I was one of the speakers against the location) and was thinking maybe they had already made up their mind as to how they were going to vote.

Three of the four people to the chairman’s left asked a lot of questions and when it came time to vote, these three members made a motion and second to delay the matter until they got more accurate information on the infrastruc-ture. The chairman called for the vote and it was six to three in favor of approving the

Benedictine request. My gut feeling was correct. It was a done deal before the meeting started.

The board of supervisors have a great opportunity to make it right for the citizens in the River Rd. corridor to retain their neighborhoods as residential.

I truly believe all Goochland County residents would like to see Benedictine High School move here but put the campus in a place that has the entire infrastructure, thus requiring less time and expense to get a building in place.

I would suggest to Brother Nolte McCarthy to visit the chairman of Capital One at West Creek. They have a lot of land, and perhaps would give Benedictine some land to build their campus.

The Republican primary to elect a candidate to run for the Virginia Senate seat in District 22 will be Aug. 23, and five people from various parts of the district are vying for the nomination.

District 22 is new and cov-ers all of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland and Prince Edward counties and

parts of Louisa County and Lynchburg.

Bryan Rhode lives in Crozier and is an assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the City of Richmond, Tom Garrett is the Commonwealth Attorney for Louisa County. Mark Peake is also a lawyer and lives in Lynchburg. Claudia Tucker is a businesswoman from Amherst, and Brian Bates is on the faculty at Longwood College.

In the campaign money race,

Rhode reported he had raised $125,197 as of June 30, 2011. Garrett was next with $80,449. Bates total was $55,032, while Peake’s number was $49,123. Tucker reported $12,085.

Tucker, a Conservative who is the Chairwoman of the Amherst County Board of Supervisors, said she is the only candidate who has balanced a budget without raising taxes.

“We made the hard choic-es on the Amherst Board of Supervisors and got through without going to the taxpayers for more of their hard-earned money,” Tucker said. “My long career in the private sector has

taught me to run government like a business, which is why I knew it was important to exam-ine government programs and eliminate those that are wasteful or ineffective.”

She also believes rural Virginia needs high-speed internet access to create jobs. Tucker believes that the Commonwealth of Virginia must work with the telecommunications industry to invest in rural areas to put the infrastructure in place to attract quality high paying jobs.

Peake describes him-self as a lifelong conservative Republican.

“Virginia is supposed to be a business friendly state,” he said. “We need to continue to attract new business to the state, and to help small and medium size businesses grow and expand, I would give companies that cre-ate new jobs tax credits for doing that.”

Peake has been a small busi-nessman and practicing attorney for over 23 years and understands how to balance a budget and cut wasteful spending. He also sup-ports the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms and opposes limits on an individual’s right to legally purchase and possess firearms.

As for job creation and busi-ness development, Bates points to his work that brought the

Bear Garden Power Plant to Buckingham.

On the Brian Bates for Senate Web site, it says he recruited the Bear Garden Project, built con-sensus, scouted the land, testified before the SCC and shepherded it through the approval pro-cess. It adds that he stayed with the project for over 10 years to bring it to reality. Since 2008, that project created 700 jobs (approximately 40 percent of them in the 22nd district), and generated over $1.5 million in tax revenue to the county. It represents the largest economic development project in the his-tory of Buckingham County.

Bates campaign also notes that in Virginia, unfunded man-dates from Richmond have cost local taxpayers millions of dol-lars. In regards to the state budget, he says he will not support a cut in funding to local governments unless it is matched – dollar for dollar – with cuts in the mandates that the state passes on to local governments. In this way, local governments will be able to balance their books without finding themselves in the difficult position of rais-ing taxes on their citizens to pay for programs that they do not want.

Susan Lascolette and Ken Peterson emerged as the winners last week in canvass-es held by the Goochland Republican Committee.

GOP Chairman Ben Slone reported that Lascolette defeated Phil “P.C.” Hunnel in District 1 by a vote of 120 to 76 with one invalid vote cast.

In District 5, Peterson was the victor over Courtney Hyers by a margin of 408 to 199.

“We were hoping for more turn out,” said Lascolette, who said Hunnel called her the next day to congratulate her.

Lascolette said she was encouraged by her perfor-mance.

“I think I have shown I can win,” she said. She will face incumbent Andrew Pryor in the November elec-tion.

Peterson is unopposed to date, although independent candidates have until the Aug. 23 deadline to complete

their campaign paperwork.Registrar Frances Ragland

said Tuesday that no one has as yet picked up the neces-sary paperwork in District 5 to oppose Peterson.

Lascolette said she was looking forward to a lively campaign.

“We would love to have some debates in District 1 both for supervisor and School Board,” she said.

Slone said he was pleased to have the GOP slate fixed, with candidates for supervi-sor now selected in each of the five districts.

“As far as I’m concerned it’s our job to get the can-didates out,” said Slone. “Then it’s up to the people. We’ll see what they want in November.”

Peterson said the strong turnout in District 5 indicat-ed the people were “looking for a change but added that his canvas win was just the first step.

“If the voters honor me in November that will just be the start of the work we need to do in the county,” said Peterson.

Although currently unopposed, Peterson said he was keeping a busy schedule and not taking anything for granted until the filing dead-

line passes Aug. 23. “I don’t know how to

coast,” he said when asked if he was taking it easy after winning the canvas.

Army Spec. Sayon D. Winston has graduated from basic infan-try training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics,

military courtesy, military jus-tice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and expe-riencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

A part of Goochland County went to the dogs this past Saturday as Goochland Baptist Church held an out-reach event called Dogs Day.

This year’s festival, just as last year, drew a large crowd of about 600 people and over 200 dogs and the church’s goal to reach out to the community was achieved.

“About 80 percent of the people that attended were out-side of the church family and we had a great turnout from the church family to fill posi-tions of service,” said Dean Frazeur, Pastor of Goochland Baptist Church. “It was amaz-ing to see how many people came out from areas of the south side, west end, east end, and the Ashland area. It was just wonderful.”

Visitors to Dogs Day received a goody bag that con-tained all types of literature relating to caring for dogs along with special treat for their four legged companions.

Ginger’s Eats and Treats, PetSmart, Kona Ice, and Aussie Pet Mobile were just a few of the 20 vendors that attended the event to offer visitors a wide range of services and products related to dog care. The event also offered the crowd demon-strations from dogs involved in search and rescue.

About 25 members of the church’s youth group were also involved with making the event a success. Rev. Adam Phlegar, Pastor to Families at Goochland Baptist Church, talked about the importance of getting young adults involved in an event like this. “It shows them that it’s not just about Goochland Baptist Church. It’s about God’s king-dom,” said Phlegar. “It’s more

about reaching out to the com-munity. Getting God’s word and love out to the community instead of it being about them-selves.”

The Golden Retriever Rescue group attended the event and brought several dogs that were currently in foster care. The group takes in dogs from local shelters and owner turn in. At any given time about 30 dogs will be in fos-ter care. Joanne Even, Adoption Coordinator for the central and south eastern region of Virginia, touched on the foster care and adoption process.

“The dogs are in foster care for a couple of weeks. We evalu-ate them medically and make sure they are socialized before they are posted for adoption,” said Even. The group does an extensive application process. While they are evaluating the dogs they also get to know the families through a home visit process. “We find out what kind of dog they are looking for and what their home environment is like,” said Even. “That way when we know more about the family and more about the dog, we can help make the right match.”

Sprite’s Hero Inc. Paws to R.E.A.D. attended the event for the first time. This group pro-vides therapy dogs to schools, libraries and other settings where children read to the dogs. “It helps young children in their reading skills,” said Allene Tyler, representative of the local chapter. “It’s been proven that this does help them read better. It’s a one-on-one program where the dog sits down with the person and the person is usually petting the dog while they are reading.”

The Trongone Band, a popu-lar local group, entertained the crowd by playing Southern rock music. A tail waging dog gone good time was had by all. Especially those on four legs.

Mutton Bustin’ at the Farmers’ Market


About 20 would be sheep-busters turned out Saturday at the My Manaking Market Farmers Market site in Centerville for the yearly visit by The Carney Man and his “Mutton Bustin’” show.

Goochlanders Greg and Linda McDonald have been running the business for the last five years or so.

“We have a horse farm and shoe horses for a living, said Greg. He said when he started doing

this (Mutton Bustin’) a friend told him “You’re nothing but a carney man.” The name stuck and he adopted it for the business.

Saturday most of the riders had a rough time staying on their mounts, with many hitting the dirt right after coming out of the chute. But others managed to stay on, including one determined youngster who held on underneath as the sheep dragged him about.

At the end it was an all girl winner’s circle, with Brianna Corle taking first, Abigale Hunneycut sec-ond place and Gabriella Marcellus in third place.

Greg said the sheep ar mostly Hampshire breed and weigh up to 200 pounds.

Riders msut weigh under 60 pounds.“It’s just like a rodeo,” said Greg. Safety is a

factor and Greg’s son Kevin served as the chief “sheepfighter,” as Greg called him, making sure to get the riders away from the sheep after they fell off.

But unlike the rodeo, where the bulls some-times come after the riders, the sheep went straight to a convenient food dish after shedding their riders.

Thomas W. Barker, “Tom”, 79, of Rockville, passed away on Aug. 5, 2011. He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mary Barker; sisters, Irma Holt, Linda Disse; brother, Harry Barker. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years Barbara C. Barker; daughters, Kathy B. Hutchinson (Harvey), Donna Boyer (Scott); grandchildren, Cole Leadbetter (Ashlee), Katie Wooten (Rob); great-grandchild, Evan Thomas Leadbetter; brothers and sisters, Ray Childress, Albert “Plug” Barker, Annie Fair, Mike Barker (Rose), John Barker (Anne); beloved beagle of 18 years, Susie; special friends, Barbara and Lewis

Tom proudly served in the marines during the Korean War, loved and served the Lord; devoted member of St. Matthew’s UMC since 1956, spiritual mentor to many, taught Sunday school for 25 years. Was a friend to everyone and never knew a stranger, he was the rock who held the family together through tough times. He played in the Barker country and gos-pel family band. The band gave time and efforts to many chari-table causes particularly Camp Rainbow which held a special place in their hearts. The fam-ily received friends on Monday, Aug. 8, 2011 at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 in St. Matthews United Methodist Church. Graveside services fol-lowed in church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthews UMC or the Centerville Rescue #3.

Farleigh

Jane Hudson Farleigh, 1944- 2011, beloved wife, mother and friend, died on Aug. 1, 2011. She was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in January 2011. Her hus-band, children and daughters-in-law were at her bedside when she died. Mrs. Farleigh was the daughter of Captain and Mrs. William O. Hudson II, U.S.N., of Oyster Bay, N.Y., and the eldest of seven children. She is sur-vived by her four brothers; and two sisters; her husband, Floyd R. Farleigh; her four children, Thomas K. Farleigh II, Jeffrey H. Farleigh, Ashley E. Farleigh, William R. Farleigh; and their families, including nine grand-children, all residing close to the family home in Midlothian, Va. She was born in Devils Lake, N.D. on Dec. 19, 1944, but being the daughter of a submarine captain, she moved from coast to coast with her family as her father changed duty stations moving and living in the military

communities of Connecticut, Rhode Island, California and Virginia. In 1962, her father was transferred to Norfolk Naval Submarine Base. It was during this tenure, and while attend-ing Old Dominion University, she met and married her hus-band of 47 years, who was a U.S. Marine Officer stationed at Marine Barracks, Little Creek Naval Air Station. While attend-ing ODU she pledged Pi Beta Phi Sorority and began a lifetime commitment to Pi Phi. After her marriage, she and her husband moved to Charlottesville, Va. for a six-month period, then set-tled in Richmond, Va. in 1965. In addition to supporting her husband, rearing four children, and pursuing a career as a real-tor, she managed to serve 10 years in the Westwood Junior Woman’s Club, with two terms as president. In 1975, the Club honored her by choosing her to the Official Hostess Contestant for the National Tobacco Festival. She was past-president of the Richmond Alumnae PanHellenic Association (1972-74), an affiliate of the National PanHellenic Conference, the umbrella organization for women’s sororities throughout the United States. She volun-teered with the Association for the Study of Childhood Cancer (ASK) for over 25 years, served as chair for the Annual Gala Fundraiser, the primary money raising event. These funds were used to sup-port the Children’s Cancer Center at the Medical College of Virginia. Her memberships in Pi Beta Phi lead her to the Elizabeth Kates Foundation and their tireless work to help rehabilitate the inmates of the Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland, Va. She was a member for 25 years and served as president of the Foundation for two years. She continued to chair the Annual Kates Day Event to raise funds for VCCW until her illness forced her to resign. She was also a member of the Woman’s

Tuckahoe Club. In 2010 she co-hosted the Annual Easter Event but was unable to con-tinue her participation in 2011. She was surrounded by good friends all her life. She took great pride in being a member of Les Amies; an 11-member women’s group in Richmond whose bonds were more like “sisters” than members. This association of friends, inspired by their having met during their Westwood Junior Club days, has lasted for over 30 years. The support and love for each other exhibited by these women has never been more apparent than during her illness. Also, she was an avid supporter and participant in her Huguenot Hundred Garden Club and of course, her monthly Bunco group. Both of these activities brought much fun and laughter into her life. The greatest joy in her life was born out her love for family. Above all else, she was a wife and a mother. Nothing else in her life made her happier than fulfilling those roles. Her love of family extended beyond her own, having married a VMI graduate, and having two of her sons in the Classes of ‘87 and ‘89, her last formal gathering was the 50th Reunion of the Class of ‘61. She loved the VMI family and they loved her back. She looked forward to inviting anyone who shared her affection for the VMI Spirit to her home to meet her friends and neighbors. Nothing pleased her more than hosting an event in her home, be it an after-game football party or a scrumptious Holiday affair. Jane Hudson Farleigh was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Above all else, she was a lady. She will be missed but never forgotten. The family hosted a Celebration of Life on Monday, Aug. 8, 2011. The event was held at the Westwood Club, 6200 West Club Lane, Richmond Va. 23221, (804) 288-6028. Flowers will be accepted by the Westwood Club on or before 08/08/11.

This weekend hundreds of fans will watch the 75 profession-al golfers compete in the Eagle Classic LPGA Futures Tour event at Richmond Country Club. At the same time, largely unnoticed in the background there will be a select group of individuals that walk the line between the profes-sional golfer and the casual golf fan. Among the volunteers who donate their time to pull off one of the top events on the Futures Tour, perhaps none enjoy their job more than those that walk the course along side the professional golfers as their caddies.

While some Futures Tour players bring their own cad-dies to the tournament others utilize professionals who are available to work the event. “If there’s no LPGA event going on some of the LPGA caddies come over and caddy for these girls,” said Richmond Country Club

is for player development, a por-tion of the golfers rely on caddies who jump at the opportunity to take on the assignment from the local volunteer pool.

Among those is Solomon, who for the third year in a row will set aside his presidential title for the weekend to pick up a golf bag. To Solomon, acting as a caddy brings a whole new pro-spective to the game. “It’s more than just walking around and watching them because you’re right there with them,” he said.

The duties for each caddy vary depending on the golfer they are paired with. While some cad-dies may occasionally be asked to confirm the read on the green, Solomon pointed out that assis-tance comes few and far between. “Normally when I caddy I don’t read anything,” he said. “They’re way better players than I am.”

avid golfer who return to RCC as a caddy this weekend. Last year Gayner, who regularly caddies at Kinloch Golf Club, was the caddy for Eileen Vargas as the Columbian earned a tie for 18th in the Greater Richmond Classic.

“It was a bit of an adjustment caddying for a Kinloch golfer and caddying for a professional golf-er,” he said. “Everything had to be more precise and there’s no room for mistakes.”

Gayner’s duties changed over the weekend. “The first day it was helping find yardage, carry the bag,” he said. “The second day it was help find yardage, give me your opinion on the wind and slop of the course. Then the third day she asked me to read a putt on the back nine. So we developed a little chemistry as the tournament progressed.”

However, each of the volun-teer caddies picked up on one of the most important rules early. “The main thing was know-ing when to open your mouth

and when to shut your mouth,” Gayner said. “That was from being around different golfers. Some of the pros would want to talk to you and that was how they relaxed. Then some of the pros would be, ‘Stay out of my way, I’m in the zone’.”

Solomon laughed that one of his biggest snafus as a caddy came from speaking at the wrong time. “One of the gals was just off the (14th) green and there’s a real severe slope going down,” he said. “Her caddy walks on and he said, ‘I think you need to chip it up to here.’ She said. ‘There’s no way it’s going to break that much to go down that hill’.”

As a RCC member who played the course innumerable times, Solomon simply reacted. “I just couldn’t stop myself,” Solomon laughed. “I said, ‘Oh yes it is.’”

Solomon immediately real-ized his mistake. “My player slapped me on the back and the little entourage all started laugh-

ing because they could see as soon as I said it, I knew it. I really could have cost (his golfer) a stroke if either of the other two players had made a remark about it.”

For both golfers, acting as a caddy is a job they would not trade with anyone. “For me it was really an unbelievable experience,

just how good they are,” Solomon said. “I mean some of the shots I witnessed were just unbelievable and you’re right there in their mind with them. You feel the pain and you feel the competi-tion.”

At 7 a.m. Saturday, Goochland Elementary School teacher Andrew Meiller got the chance to make a little bit of history for the community where he grew up.

Meiller dove into the pool at the Goochland Family YMCA to kick off the inaugural Goochland Sprint Triathlon, a race consisting of three events: a 300-yard swim, a 12.5-mile bike ride and 5K run.

Triathlons are somewhat extraordinary for a community known more for its traditional sports such as football, basket-ball and baseball. Nevertheless, it drew a lot of community sup-port — from individual volun-teers to the YMCA and J. Sargeant

Columbia, was happy to be the first participant in the first run-ning of this event. Ordinarily, the fastest swimmer gets the first spot. Meiller earned the slot this time because he was first to regis-ter for the race.

“It’s sort of a known thing that if you have No. 1, like in a pro race, you’re usually considered the defending champion or the top-ranked person,” Meiller said. “Any other circumstance I would not be No 1. So it was cool.”

Meiller, 42, did not finish first, but he finished in a respectable 38th place out of the field of 186 participants with a time of 1:08:44.

Cary Ayers of Richmond won

with a time of 59:51 — almost a minute ahead of Brandon Hutcherson of Glen Allen, the second person to start the race and the first to cross the finish line with a time of 1:00:38. Renee Kunnen of Richmond was the fastest woman and the sixth fast-est overall with a 1:01:37 finish.

Ayers enjoyed the course, which included a running course across the J. Sargeant Reynolds campus — a far cry from tri-athlon courses in more urban areas.

“The bike course was a lot of fun. A lot of ups and downs, so you had to work hard climbing those hills, but it was reward-ing being able to go fast on the downhill,” Ayers said. “The run through these trails, running

through the fields and around the campus here of the YMCA and the community college, that was a lot of fun, too — a lot dif-ferent from a lot of the triathlons in the suburban neighborhoods where you’re just running on pavement.”

Kunnen also enjoyed the running course.

“It was neat to do an off-road course. I don’t do those a lot,” Kunnen said. “To run through the trails and the grass was a lot of fun. It’s not like the longer stuff on the roads. Shorter stuff on the trails hurts more, but it’s a lot of fun.”

Several participants noted that part of the appeal of the Goochland race lay in its chari-table goals, which include rais-

ing money for Goochland Free Clinic, the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program, and the Goochland Family YMCA.

“You always have to race beyond yourself,” Kunnen said. “If you’re racing for yourself, it gets stale, so you’ve got to find a bigger purpose to race for.”

Rounding out the top-five men’s finishers were David Kunnen of Richmond in third place with a time of 1:00:39, followed by Douglas Landau of Oak Hill (1:01:31) and Frankie Marcinkowski of Burke (1:01:36).

Connie Glueck of Williamsburg finished second among women participants with a time of 1:04:59, followed by Kate Fisher of Richmond (1:10:12),

Danielle Hardaway of Culpeper (1:10:29), and Sabrina Steele of Troy (1:10:35).
