Twenty years after accomplishing amonumental feat on the LadiesProfessional Golf Association Tour, named its Rookie of the Year in 1993,Suzanne Strudwick is teaching 50Farragut junior girls, ages 9-13, thegame of golf as Fairways & Greens’director of junior development.
Still a card-holding LPGA Tour mem-ber after 14 years on tour, Strudwick isthe new head coach of Carson-NewmanUniversity’s Women’s Golf team.
Having played Fox Den CountryClub’s course “about five or six times,”Strudwick also has witnessed severalNews Sentinel Opens at FDCC.
She expressed a special respect —from a professional perspective — forthe 44-year-old venue, which is set tohost the 2013 News Sentinel Open pre-sented by Pilot Thursday-Sunday, Aug.15-18.
“I think it is a tricky golf course,”Strudwick said about the Par 71, 7,071-yard course. “I’m amazed every year asto how low the scores are. I really don’tthink it’s that easy.”
However, “These guys hit it so far, they make these courses look sillynow,” Strudwich added. “I think it’sthe caliber of the tour pros these days, its just amazing to me, of how well theyhit it and how well they manage theirgames now. … You will play thatcourse and hit every club in your bag.It really will examine everything. Ireally like it. I enjoy it.
“The front nine is where you can letyour driver loose a little bit more”
because fairways “are a lot moreopen.”
With much narrower fairways fromNo. 11 through No. 14, “The back nineis all about scoring and all about place-ment … they cannot hit their driver somuch,” she said. “It’s almost two dis-tinct” types of holes.
“I’ve heard the average is abouteight to nine drivers a round.”
Strudwich breaks down, hole byhole, how she thinks the Web.com Tourfield should play the course:
No. 1Par 4, 482 yards (downhill slope off
tee): “Typically, there’s going to besome nerves involved teeing off on thefirst hole, so play it safe and aim formiddle left [off the tee]. … If you’regoing to miss it, miss left. If you hugthe right side, you can get yourself intosome trouble. … Your tee shot is para-mount.
“If you hit the fairway, the troublethere is a bunker on the left, and thentrees and a hill on the right. … If youknow you’re not going to hit the green, they play a lay-up shot.”
“It’s a fairly easy hole to make abirdie. … It’s a big green, it’s got someundulation to it. … Get it as close asyou can on that third shot.”
No. 2Par 3, 193 yards (downhill off tee
with water fronting green): “One thingat Fox Den pros probably don’t take inaccount so much, is that it does tend tobe windy. And with the elevationchange that that course has, I see a lot

of pros over-clubbing on that hole. Soit’s probably half a club less that whatyou think.
“And if it hits the front edge, it willroll up that green because it sits downand it’s relatively flat, and it tends tobe a little harder.”
No. 3Par 4, 409 yards (uphill all the way,
slight dogleg): “You walk off there witha 4 and you’ve done well. … Premiumbunkering up around the greens, soyour second shot is to an elevatedgreen where you can’t see the pin.”
Off the tee with a driver, “Hit thefairway middle-right, that’s a goodapproach. Definitely pick the right

club for your second shot. It’s going tobe more than you think.”
No. 4Par 4, 436 yards (slightly downhill
off tee): “Three and four, both of thoseholes are very similar. Four goes back
down the hill, but again it’s a dogleg tothe right. … Play less [club]. It’s aslopey green.”
No. 5Par 5, 533 yards: “This one I’d say is
a birdie hole. At this point in yourround you’ll really want to start attack-ing it. It narrows down as it comes intothe green. There’s some danger in
going for it in two. But being in abunker around this green is not a prob-lem. It’s a small green.”
No. 6Par 3, 198 yards (steep downhill off
tee): “Being that it’s straight downhill,it plays at least a club, or club-and-a-half shorter than the yardage. …Seeing what the wind’s doing and hav-
ing a plan is premium on that hole, because that will change day to day.
No. 7Par 4, 422 yards (uphill off tee):
“When I’ve played it and when I’vewatched, pros have a lot of trouble onthis one. I think it’s because it doglegs

to the left, and there’s out-of-boundson the right. I saw a lot of shots fromthe tee box, balls that were going justtoo far. So it’s probably not a driver offthe tee on that one. … You hit downinto the fairway and then back up. Youcan run out of fairway, so that oneprobably would be a 3-wood off the tee.
No. 8Par 4, 400 yards: “That one is fairly
easy. … It’s not a difficult hole. Thatwould be a birdie hole opportunity. …Probably not a driver off the tee.”
No. 9 Par 4, 421 yards: (downhill off tee,
then uphill to the green): “You’ve justgot to watch the corners. Probably nota driver off the tee. Make sure if youcut the corner you do it right. … With9 being back up the hill and into thegreen, again you can’t see the bottomof the green, so you’re elevationchange is knowing how hard the greenis, how much release and pin place-ment to be able to attack it.”
No. 10Par 5, 561 yards: “Kind of similar to
No. 1, but not the elevation. This one isjust a straightaway, long par 5. Justcurls around to the right. Again, Iwould say I lot of them might be able togo for it in two. But if you don’t lay upto a yardage that you know, there’s nota lot of trouble on that apart from theout-of-bounds because of the drivingrange on the left.”
“A slight fade off the tee box is prob-ably a good play, and then either go forit or lay up to your favorite yardage.Again, an undulating, smallish green,so having a comfortable wedge intothat green is paramount because youdon’t want a long putt. Those greenscan get you. They get really crusty bymid-August. If you’re above the hole, you’re better off being short of all theholes putting up into it, instead ofbeing long putting down. … On thesepar 5s, it just really knowing youryardage and what your wedges can do.”

No. 11 & No. 12No. 11, Par 4, 413 yards, and No. 12,
Par 4, 373 yards (begins a series of nar-row fairways): “It begins those stringof holes that are very narrow. You’re ona slight slope of the fairway. So thefairway’s running away from you.Again, it’s not going to be a driver offthe tee, because otherwise if you miss
it you’ll either be in the rough or in thetrees.
“And the fairway is not flat, it’sslopey on both 11 and 12. It’s smallgreens, slight doglegs. Again, they’rejust going to have wedges or shortirons for their second shots, even withhitting a 3-wood or 2-iron off the teebox.”
No. 13 Par 3, 166 yards: “The little short
one. That one has got a fairly small, narrow green. And again, it’s a littleexposed out there so the wind cancatch it. To me it’s all about the greenon that one and just aim really accu-

rate. You can get into some trouble ifyou miss the green because of theslopes. … They’re going to be hitting8-, 7-iron. It’s fairly level.”
No. 14Par 4, 368 yards: “Again, that’s a nar-
row, real short hole. Probably going tohave a 3-iron, 2-iron off the tee. …There’s more trees and there’s moredoglegs. Slopey. … Long, narrowgreen.”
No. 15Par 4, 427 yards: “It slopes from left
to right, so you want to hit your drivermiddle left because it will start slopingdown. And then it’s a straight downhillshot into the green. Small green. Anelevation change again. A big changefrom hitting down into the green.Probably again, not a driver off the tee.
“Green tends to be a little firmer onthat one because it’s sitting down a lit-tle bit, so the ball might release a littlebit further on that green. They’ll prob-ably be hitting 7-iron into it, so they’re
getting a lot of spin.”
No. 16Par 3, 214 yards (big pond fronts
green). “That one is probably the sig-nature hole. That’s the one that[many] spectators go to. A lot of noise.… They’ll experience a lot of noisebecause of all the hoopla around that. It’s a good learning experience hole.”
“Again, it’s very open, [you’re] hit-ting across water. It’s a big, slopinggreen. You’re wide open, so what thepros might feel back on the tee box isnot necessarily the wind on the green,
so they have to pay attention to thegreen being exposed and quite windy. And they’re kind of sheltered backthere on the tee box.”
No. 17 Par 4, 458 yards: “A fairly long slog of
a hole. It’s just slightly uphill andaround the corner. That green is nar-row, and there’s a couple of dips on theside of the greens that if you miss it onthe left or the right, you’ve got awk-ward chip shots. … Seventeen is sort

of crosswind.” “On that one you are having to hit
your driver so you’ve got the shortestpossible shot into the small green. Butit’s a tough green to hit, and thenyou’re almost going to feel like you’rein Scotland if you miss the green. … Itwon’t be automatically getting your lopwedge out. You can chip and run it. I’veseen pros take their hybrids and chipand run it through those slopes.
“It’s kind of fun. It’s a good spectatorgreen to go watch, because you’ll see alot of the guys being creative.”
No. 18Par 5, 597 yards (pond fronts green):
Eighteen is the fun hole for the specta-tors. … They tend to hit the ball mid-dle right on that one. Kind of hug thetree line a little bit more to have ashorter hit into the green. It’s down-hill. They’re typically hitting probably2-irons, 3-irons into that green. It’spretty much an island green.
“It’s a tough second shot becausethe fairway slopes away from them. It’sdownhill. The green’s downhill. Andthat green can get a little crusty bySunday, so anything on the front willrelease.
If spectators “could get a little clos-
er on the right side of the fairway andwatch them a little bit more, the spec-tators would have more of an idea ofhow difficult that shot is into thegreen” near the woods.
“That hole plays typically downhill,so that’s why they can get to it.”

SCORE IN THE 90’SThe world’s greatest wines seem to always earn high marks in the global press. That’sthe result of the perfect application of passion and talent. Wines with famous namesand pedigrees definitely command a higher price — but they reward with an unde-niable quality year after year.
The World’s Greatest WinesIt used to be nearly impossible to obtain a steady supply of fine wines in Knoxville, but you can find great wines from the world’s most celebrated producers on a year-round basis at Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits. We even carry wines rated 90 points*or higher by the most discerning wine critics at prices as low as $8.99. So no matterwhat your budget, you can always find something exceptional.
Wine Is Not An Afterthought (To Us)We’re not a “package store” — we didn’t add wine after it became popular. Weopened as a wine specialty store, and after just ten short years, and a lot of hardwork, we’ve grown into the largest seller of fine wine in the metropolitan Knoxvillearea. Yes, it’s true, we do carry the big brands, but our passion will always be thegems — the best wines we can source from around the world, some new to America, and some with well-deserved international reputations. Even if you already have afavorite liquor store, you should still choose Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits whenev-er you need a guaranteed great wine for a special occasion, just to be sure. Becausewe’ve always been dedicated to making Knoxville a world class wine market. Onegreat score after another.
