BEng (Hons) Control and Automation

Who is it for?The programme has been created as a CPD top-up degree for engineering professionals to upgrade their existing quali cations and improve their academic status. The programme is aimed at those at HND level looking to gain new skills, experience and knowledge and study through to degree. This programme is aimed at personnel with an existing appropriate Level 5 Engineering quali cation. Siemens are also using this programme as part of their Degree Apprenticeship using the Control/Technical Support Level 6 Apprenticeship Standard.

What are the entry requirements?Academically, students registering to the programme will need to satisfy the relevant degree entry criteria.

What quali cation will be achieved?Graduates of the programme will achieve a BEng (Hons) Control and Automation degree quali cation. In addition you will also be given the opportunity to achieve Siemens Certi ed Programmer Accreditation.

How long is the programme? This is a one year programme.

What will be studied? The programme is split into three parts and consists of academic learning at the University of Salford and work-based learning in the workplace. You will complete the SIEMENS SITRAIN Certi ed PLC programmer accreditation which is a competence based accreditation consisting of three individual weeks delivered at the Manchester Training Centre plus a one day exam. You will also complete a work-based project of which the University of Salford will support and assess. Finally, you will complete two modules at the University of Salford: Robotics and Automation and Embedded Systems.

The Robotics and Automation module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of current industrial control technology and practices. On completion of the module, you will have an appreciation of current PLC, SCADA and DCS systems and have the ability to design a PLC based control system.

The Embedded Systems module will introduce the concept of embedded systems and their application to modern electronic systems to develop the knowledge and skills needed to realise embedded systems design and implementation through the use of microcontrollers and their associated programming languages.

How will the programme be delivered? The modules at the University of Salford will be delivered as a mixture of lectures, workshops, and tutorials. Lectures will provide theoretical understanding and lecture material will be supported by tutorial classes to allow students to develop skills in application of knowledge to particular problems.

Modules at the University of Salford will be delivered via block release of two weeks per module.

How will it be supported and assessed? The examination will assess the theoretical aspect of the taught material and for the coursework assessment; the students will develop, document and present a solution that addresses a particular problem.
