the Thursday, Sept. 1 Bulletin showed a group named Tim-berline, but not the bluegrass group from Pickens, S.C., that will perform at the Green Creek Heritage Festival. Also, the captions on pages 14 and 15 should have said the festi-val will be held on Sept. 10.

history at the residence, located in the Sunny View Community.

The children were found in the home at the time of the bust and are currently in the custody of the Polk County Department of Social Services.

Hardin and Barnes were each charged initially with manufacturing methamphet-amine and possession with in-tent to distribute methamphet-amine precursor, both felonies.

The additional charges were filed last week after the 1-year-old and 2½-year-old were tested for drugs, according to

Polk County Sheriff Donald Hill. Hill said the misdemeanor child abuse charge is the most severe allowable by state law.

Items found in the home during the bust included pseu-doephedrine, sulfuric acid, acetone and sodium hydroxide as well as various containers commonly used in manufactur-ing methamphetamine, accord-ing to sheriff officers.

A contracted hazardous ma-terial team cleaned up the chemicals found in the home.

This was the first meth lab discovered in Polk County in about four years. The sheriff’s office’s first meth lab bust oc-curred in 2002, with another

ports, was arrested and charged with three counts each of felony breaking and entering and felony larceny.

An estimated $150,000 of

damage was done to the build-ing, and an estimated $30,000 to $40,000 of copper was stolen, according to initial reports.

Sgt. Mike Wheeler said the sheriff’s office was alerted to the crime about a month and a half ago and began setting up surveil-

lance at the plant. Wheeler said he estimates the copper began being taken three to four months ago in small amounts at a time.

Wheeler said through surveil-lance, the sheriff’s office devel-oped a good idea of the suspect’s routine. He said he got up at 3

a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, and arrived at the building. While he was there, an older model Toyota Camry pulled up at the rear of the build-ing and parked next to the wall, not visible from the road. A man

got out and left the driver’s door and trunk opened, while he entered the building through a window.

Wheeler witnessed this and called for back up. The suspect hid in the 55,000-square-foot building until he was found in the drainage area, located in the basement.

McCurry was placed under a $100,000 bond and was still being held at the Polk County Jail as of last Friday. McCurry will have a first appearance in court today, Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The Grover Industries plant, which once dyed yarn, closed in October 2008. Just prior to the recession, the plant employed 125 people. The building was built in the 1890s and was originally used as a hosiery mill, powered by a dam on the Pacolet River.

Plant manager Gary Semmell still checks on the plant weekly and discovered the crime.

The sheriff’s office was assisted in the investigation by the N.C.

The Polk County Memorial Honor Guard was formed more than eight years ago to pro-vide a proper military funeral ceremony for veterans in our area. The honor guard also of-ten leads and carries the colors (U.S. flag) for area parades and festivals.

Members of the American Legion Post #250 in Tryon and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 9116 in Columbus and Post #10349 in Mills Spring volunteer their time to form this honor guard unit.

The honor guard members are committed to perform-ing their duties in a dignified and respectful manner. This includes wearing appropriate attire.

Members are currently working to raise funds to pur-chase military style dress pants, shirts with shoulder epaulets, appropriate patches and cords, dress jackets, gloves, belts, boots and caps. The total cost

to outfit 12 members is more than $5,000. Through a variety of projects, the honor guard unit has raised approximately $2,500 of this cost.

In preparation for the up-coming Sept. 11 anniversary, the honor guard unit borrowed $1,000 to supplement their

available funds and placed an order for most of the needed uniform components. Cur-rently, the funds are insufficient to order the jackets.

The honor guard unit is ask-ing for help in order to reach this goal. If you would like to make a contribution to this ef-

fort, please send donations to: Polk County Post #250 of the American Legion, Inc., “Honor Guard Donation, 20 Hampton Court, Columbus, N.C. 28722.

Polk County Post #250 is a 50l(3)c non-profit organization. All donations are tax deduct-ible.

One Scoop at a Time ice cream cools off Tryonby Samantha Hurst

One Scoop at a Time workers began filling waffle cones and cups with heaping scoops of ice cream just over a month ago in Tryon.

The shop, owned by Tryon resident Khlid Aboudas, opened Thursday, Aug. 4.

“Tryon didn’t have [an ice cream shop], so I thought it was a good opportunity,” Aboudas said. “So far business is good.”

Aboudas previously owned and operated the Triangle Stop in Tryon before selling it earlier this year. He said he felt an ice cream shop would be a good fit in the small two-story

building just down from the main street area of Tryon, especially see-ing as Tryon was one of the only towns around that didn’t have its own ice cream spot.

Aboudas keeps eight flavors available each day but rotates them out on regular basis so there is al-ways something new for ice cream lovers to enjoy. Flavors include stan-dard favorites such as butter pecan, mint chocolate chip and strawberry. Plus, Aboudas throws a few wild-cards in from time to time, including his favorite – sherbet – and others like birthday cake ice cream.

Hours of operation for the shop

are Sunday through Thursday from 1 - 9 p.m. The shop stays open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Beyond ice cream, One Scoop also serves slushies, smoothies and milkshakes. Aboudas said in the next month he anticipates adding fresh doughnuts, coffee and cap-

puccinos. He said people could also rent out

the upstairs of the space for birthday parties and get-togethers. The space holds up to 20 people. He said the shop could even make the cake for the party. To make a reservation, call 828-859-0102.

On September 11, 2001, a group of terrorists attacked the United States of America. (A terrorist is someone who tries to use fear and brutal force to change, control or destroy a group of people, or in this case, a nation of people.) The United States has been subject to attacks before Septem-ber 11, also known as 9-11, but this is the largest attack ever to occur on American soil. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this terrible day. A memorial is currently being erected at the site to honor the fallen. On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda hijackers took control of four commercial airplanes. The airplanes were taken over after takeoff with the passengers aboard. The first plane intentionally flew into the northern World Trade Center Tower at 8:45 am. A second plane flew into the south tower at 9:03 am. A third plane flew into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. at 9:37 am. The fourth plane, which is believed to have been headed towards the United States Congress building, crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 am, after the passengers aboard attempted to retake control of the plane. By 10:30 am, both of the World Trade Center Towers had collapsed because of structural damage. A third, smaller World Trade Center building fell that day at 5:21 pm. All 19 hijackers died in the attacks, along with all of the airline passengers, hundreds of rescue workers, pedestrians on the streets below, and over 2,000 people in the World Trade Center Towers. A total of 2,995 people needlessly lost their lives.

Saluda Center completes landscape beautification project

In May 2010, the board of the Saluda Center announced the center had received a $5,500 grant from the Saluda Community Fund at the Polk County Community Founda-tion. The grant was to complete a landscaping and beautification proj-ect at the Saluda Center complex to include the main building, the old scout hut and the Thrifty Barn.

Saluda Center board president Judy Ward said, “We are grateful to receive these funds, proud of the project they are supporting and proud to be a part of this unique community.”

The board recently announced the project has been completed. The grading and landscaping was done by Colt Love, owner of Sil-ver Creek Lawn and Landscape in Columbus.

An anonymous donor estab-lished the Saluda Community Fund, a competitive grant fund, in 2006 to celebrate Saluda and benefit Saluda organizations that are serving the residents of Saluda. The donor said Saluda is “the most unique place on the planet; there is a sense in people of being where they belong.”

The vision of the Polk County Community Foundation is to ad-vance philanthropy and improve the quality of life for all citizens in Polk County and the surrounding area.

For more information about the Polk County Community Founda-tion, email [email protected], call 828-859-5314 or visit the foundation at 255 S. Trade St., Tryon.

Feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders

Grassroots

by Chris Jakubowicz

If I have to pretend to play horse one more time, I’m fronting the money to legally change my name to Mr. Ed.

I chose Mr. Ed over Secre-tariat or Man O’ War due to the name being a little more per-sonable. I really couldn’t see me introducing my wife and I at the next Christmas party as Mr. and Mrs. Man O’ War. I like the intimidation factor, but I need to live in a bit of reality.

Reality is in the eye of the beholder in my house-hold. You know you’re in big trouble when your daughter looks at you and views you as a “horsy.” The reality to her would be that I need to sprout hooves, chew the cud and neigh every now and then for good measure.

My little girl eats, sleeps, breaths and mimics horses.

Not only am I in trouble when she has a little free time on her hands and decides she wants to saddle up her horse, but she ex-pects at some point in the near future to own one of them – a real one.

I n o r d e r to play horse with a little girl, one has to have a very strong back, which I, of course, don’t.

Also, one has to have stam-ina; which I, of course, am lacking a bit at the moment.

One also has to pretend to be horsy in the middle of a 95-degree day.

Nothing wrong with a good sweat, I always tell myself, as I trot around with beads of sweat running down the front of my glasses.

A good degree of humility is particularly needed. Especially if neighbors are looking out of their windows at your daugh-ter hooking a bungee cord to

your shirt and pretending it’s a bridle. Or in allowing them to tie you to a tree - and then leave you

there as they go and fetch you some grass, that I in turn have to pretend to eat. After all, that’s what I do as a horse, eat grass and allow people to tie me up and ride me wherever they want to go.

We went to Harmon Field the other day to well, watch the horses, of course. Mesmerized, she stood there as if the horses were running around the ring, huffing and jumping just for

her. She had herself an “I am one with the horse” moment.

Armageddon could have come and she wouldn’t have batted a 7-year-old eyelash, unless it was a horse and rider coming out of the sky.

As we walked, I noticed that she started to walk exactly like a horse. If you know how a horse walks, you can imag-ine. With her boots on and her dream in her head, she led me around to view her favorite horses. She even asked me to bend down and allow her to “saddle me” in public. That’s where I draw the line.

A photographer noticed the young addiction as we walked toward the stalls.

“Is she thinking about rid-ing?” he inquired to me.

“Every day,” I said without

Doty to speak Sept. 12 to Polk County Retired School Personnel

The September kick-off lun-cheon meeting of Polk County Retired School Personnel will be Sept. 12 at noon at the Polk Coun-ty Meeting Place Senior Center on Skyuka Rd. in Columbus.

flinching.“You know what that means,

don’t you?” he said in return. “It’s going to happen. She’s going to ride one day.”

Right then I realized the enormity of his statement. First of all, he’s right. Second of all, I have to make a lot of money and I need to start right now - whoa, horsy.

As a parent, it seems the weight of the world is on my shoulders as I watch my kids grow up and see the desires they have. My responsibility is to provide them with every means necessary for them to achieve those wishes. Making enough money, providing the best education we can, help-ing them pursue their gifts and desires and hoping all these choices we make daily add up to something positive.

• Grassroots(Continued from page 16)

My daughter “shooed” me out of her bedroom the other day so she could have her privacy with a friend. At that moment, I saw a 15-year-old exiling me out of her life. The weight of the world being on my shoulders didn’t seem so bad then.

At some point when they have outgrown their imagina-tion, my kids will be on their own, living with the choices we’ve made for them. A little part of me will probably wish for that weight to be on my shoulders one more time; pre-tending to be horsy and being led by a bungee cord just for kicks.

Preparing an executive summary for a grant application

ing funding. When you are preparing to

write the executive summary, you’ll need to identify the key points in the proposal and include only those in the executive sum-mary.

So, if you haven’t guessed already, the executive summary should be written last, after the complete proposal is written.

Of the key points in your proposal, emphasize those points that are important and follow the giving guidelines of the grant-maker/foundation. Remember, the executive summary is an abstract of the proposal and no new ideas should be introduced at this time.

In the last article we shared steps for developing and craft-ing the cover letter of a grant proposal. In this article we will continue to talk about the steps for writing a successful grant, but focusing on the executive summary.

The executive summary is the document that is going to invite the reader, the grantmaker, to continue reading the entire grant proposal. The executive summa-ry should also deliver the details of exactly what the organization is asking for.

This is where you will con-vince the grantmaker that your program, service or equipment is important and why.

The organization will also use the executive summary to let the grantmaker know, if funded, the results the grant will have on the demographic area that is served by the nonprofit request-

Nonprofit Leadership

Melissa Le Roy

Questions to help you write the executive summary can in-clude some of the following.

• Have you identified yourself clearly?

To answer this question, make sure that you have clearly stated your mission statement and your organization’s uniqueness.

• What are the proposed proj-ect title, the purpose and the demographics served?

To answer this question, en-sure that you have a summary of the project, the need for it, popu-lation statistics and the expected outcome(s).

• Why is this grant important? What will be accomplished

by the end of the grant period? Why should your nonprofit (as opposed to any other nonprofit) receive funds from the grant-maker for this project?

• How much are you request-ing from the grantmaker?

How much will the entire program, service and/or equip-ment cost?

Just as with the cover letter, the executive summary should be no longer than one page in length. At the end of the execu-tive summary always make sure to thank the grantmaker for this opportunity to submit a proposal and for reading it.

The next article will continue the steps for writing the grant, focusing on the first step of the proposal – the need statement.

The Nonprofit Leadership col-umn, written by Melissa Le Roy, a nonprofit consultant, is aimed at providing guidance from Me-lissa’s perspective as a leader in both the nonprofit and for profit business world.

Paving work on Pacolet St. in Tryon

Tra f f i c i n downtown Tryon was disrupted by construction Friday, Sept. 2 for the second time in the past couple of weeks. A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation was at work Friday in the Pacolet Street and Melrose Avenue area, raising manholes and water valve boxes flush with the new asphalt on the roads that were resurfaced in and around Tryon recently. NCDOT has not given an expected completion date for the work. (photos by Samantha Hurst)
