The Dirt Cafe 2009SFE are involved in the rebirth of Dirt Cafe. The Dirt Cafe is a London-based experimental project that began in 2004. The collaborators of the Dirt Cafe Project seek humanising ways to unlock thinking by connecting specialists and influencers with those who question the status quo and give dimension to new and alternative scenarios.

Currently the focus of the dirt cafe is Food. Where does food come from, how many people are aware of the environmental impact the way we grow, buy and consume food has on the planet.

Food is responsible for between 25% and 30% of the world’s CO2 emissions.

The project, a collaboration between 20 designers, chefs and independent thinkers in New York, London and Copenhagen, will use the Climate conference in Denmark this December as it’s short term focus, aimng to ensure food is high on the international agenda.

iPEC Independent Personalised Learning Centres

2office 1

SFE are currently working alongside ReDesign Youth on the design of several iPEC centres in Milton Keynes.

The purpose of the centres is to provide an eductaional facility for young people who do not respond to traditional learning environments.

This challenge tackles a problem that affects thousands of young people across Britain, and offers them a chance to gain qualifications in an environment that is more suited to their needs - something that is imperitive to their future careers and standard of living.

Soul Of Africa - Strategic Visual CommunicationsSFE were selected to take part in a ‘think and make tank’ with 10 other designers from across Europe, as part of a live MBA project at the Saïd Business School, Oxford University.

The day was spent devising new ways to assist South African chairty Soul Of Africa in it’s development through strategic planning, logistics, visual communication, and merchandising.

The day was spent with Lance Clark, (of Clarks Shoes), and his son Galahad (founder of eco footwear store Terra Plana) and was a great success.

A short film of the day, complete with a delightful cameo from Tom can be viewed here: http://vimeo.com/4761762

The brainchild of The Design Council’s RED Team, ‘Touching The State’ looked at ‘Citizenship’ in the UK and how design could be used to improve points of contact between The State and it’s citizens.

SFN were involved in think tanks and discussions with the Design Council and several other designers.

Our response, entitled ‘Eat This’, is essentially edible ballot papers. For any election process, the voter is provided with a voting slip printed with edible ink on rice paper, and consumes his/her less favoured candidates leaving their preferred option as the only remaining part uneaten!

The idea of this is to empower the voter, and encourage those who might not otherwise take part to get involved. It also makes a fairly austere process more fun and engaging in a multi-sensory fashion.

The idea was one of the winning entries, and was exhibited at the Design Council.

Winner of the R.S.A. Voting By Design Competition

A response to a brief aiming to increase interest in the voting process amongst 12-25 year olds.

A modular and flexible pavilion that youngsters could scrawl answers to regularly updated topical questions in their chosen

medium, be it spray cans, scratching into the walls, or the trusty marker.

The modular pods could also be offset to form polling booths.

The project was an attempt to engage young people on a level they are comfortable with.
