have not changed. Today, Birnie Bus

Service operates over 1,000 vehi-

advantage of ever

increasing opportuni-

ties such as privatiza-

tion of school trans-

portation; and grow

our charter services

across the country,”

Birnie Bus ServicePresident Tim Birniesaid.

“We have become a

very diversified com-

pany, providing servic-

es for school districts,

motorcoach char ters,

line runs and trans-

portation related to

Medicaid.”

Offering public transportation in the

form of fixed-route and on-demand

response in five upstate New York coun-

ties is also a vital part of business for

Birnie Bus Service. This includes campus

shuttles at several colleges/universities,

such as Colgate University, located in

Hamilton, NY. Called the Colgate

Cruiser, this service is designed to help

students and other members of the com-

munity travel throughout campus, as well

as downtown Hamilton, off-campus resi-

dence halls, apartment complexes, and

local stores and restaurants.

“Public transportation is an important

part of our business and has expanded

over the years. We entered this type of

work to further diversify, and it’s been a

natural fit,” Tim Birnie said.

A line run operation through central

New York is another part of the trans-

portation mix at Birnie Bus Service. This

fixed-route takes place between Little

Falls and Syracuse.

“We transport about

110,000 people on this

line per year. Most of

these riders are work-

ers going to, and from,

their jobs. We also pro-

vide a fixed-route to a

resort/casino in Ver -

ona, NY, on a daily

basis. Three to four

motorcoaches are used

for this service alone,”

Tim Birnie said. “Our

company transports

many college and pro-

fessional sports teams

as well. We continue to expand.”

Finding new riders, and thus new rev-

enue, helps Birnie Bus Service with its

growth, even during slow economic

times. One avenue of growth has come

from the international market.

“We are finding a lot of work with the

international traveler. This involves pick-

ing up groups and taking them anywhere

they want to go, either locally or across

the United States,” Tim Birnie said.

“Foreign travelers like to come to our

A History Lesson OfDedication And Growth

Being a family-owned

and operated trans-

portation company,

the evolution of Birnie Bus

Service began shortly after World War II

when Tim Birnie’s parents, Martin K.and MaryJo Birnie, started working with

MaryJo’s brother, who had a small trans-

portation company in place.

In 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Birnie purchased

the bus company and formed the corpora-

tion in 1960. Thirteen years later, the busi-

ness underwent a dramatic change in size

and focus as it became the major carrier for

the Rome City School District, taking 80

percent of all routes and a 5-year contract.

In the fall of 1979, a second generation

of the family came aboard as Tim Birnie

became a full-time employee, leaving

behind a 10-year teaching career.

“I was born into the bus industry. I

became a teacher for 10 years after grad-

uating from college, but I continued to

work at our family business on weekends,

nights, summers, etc. I have always been

involved with buses in some way. It’s in

my blood,” Tim Birnie said. “I know both

sides of the coin when it comes to student

transportation, having been an educator

of children and now responsible for trans-

porting them.”

Although he is currently the company

president, Tim Birnie hasn’t forgotten his

roots when it comes to providing hands-

on service as he continues to drive a

school bus.

“I try to lead by example and feel our

employees respect and like to see me con-

tinue to drive a bus. I don’t

ask our fellow drivers to do

anything that I wouldn’t do

myself on a daily basis,”

Tim Birnie said. “It’s just

like running a factory. If you

really want to run it right,

it’s important to interact

with the people who are

operating the machinery.

“I talk with our employees

every day. This includes mechanics, body

shop personnel, dispatchers and drivers.

It’s important to keep track of the compa-

ny’s pulse.”

One of the basic goals Tim Birnie had

when joining the family business full

time in 1979 was to expand its product

offering.

“Back then, we basically were a one

contract type of company. We worked for

the Rome school district. That was basi-

cally what we did,” Tim Birnie said. “I

had a little different vision, one in which

all the way to adults.”

Approval to transport groups and tours

throughout the United

States was granted by the

Interstate Commerce Com -

mission to Birnie Bus

Service in 1982. Since

then, the charter field con-

tinues to show strong

growth for the company.

Birnie Bus Service

entered yet another market

in 1988 when it started to

transport people with dis-

abilities in association with

the Rome Developmental

Center. Over 80 buses are

now dedicated to this

growing market in several

New York counties. In 2008, the compa-

ny also became an affiliate of the

Trailways System.

As the business heads into the future,

members of another generation from the

Birnie family are starting to make their

presence felt. After completing a market-

ing degree in May 2010 from Providence

College, in Providence, RI, and gaining

corporate experience in New York City

during the past year, Tim Birnie’s daugh-

ter, Kait Birnie, has joined the family

business. She currently is serving as a

consultant.

“I’m loving it so far. Basically, I’m

grabbing everybody’s coat tails and try-

ing to learn as much as possible,” Kait

Birnie said. “I’m trying to get a feel for

everything and have a lot to learn. I also

have some new ideas and initiatives that I

would like to implement at our company

after gaining experience in the corporate

world.”

Kait Birnie’s twin sis-

ter, Lauren, and younger

brother, Brian, also plan

to join the company in the

future.

“My sister is a graduate

of Providence College as

well and majored in man-

agement. She is currently

living in Boston, MA,

where she works for a

financial firm as she

gains experience in that

field,” Kait Birnie said.

“Lauren is extremely

eager to work for Birnie

Bus Service in the future. My sister,

brother and I are learning as much as pos-

sible right now. We are very excited.

“This is a great industry, and hopefully

we can help take Birnie Bus Service to

the next level in the years ahead.”

Birnie and his wife, Kim, are optimistic

about their children’s future with the

company.

“Kait, Lauren and Brian had the same

advantage that I had growing up. Our

children were born into the bus business.

Every night at the supper table we talked

about buses. Just by osmosis alone they

have been able to learn a lot about this

industry,” Tim Birnie said. “I feel our

children have the same passion that my

father and I have had over the years.”

The Value Of Loyal Employees

When all three do eventually

come aboard, Kait, Lauren

and Brian Birnie will join an

employee base that has been credited for

helping the company grow throughout its

long history.

“One of the main keys to our compa-

ny’s success has been our dedicated and

loyal employees. They play a key role in

building strong customer retention,” Tim

Birnie said.

With a work force that has reached the

1,400 mark, Birnie Bus Service provides

a wide variety of jobs related to bus trans-

portation. This includes CDL licensed

drivers, bus attendants, dispatchers, certi-

fied diesel mechanics and body shop

technicians, human resource specialists,

charter and operation division employees,

safety and training personnel, road safety

investigators, regional managers and

numerous support staff.

“We have the complete business office

in place at our headquarters in Rome.

This includes accounts receivable,

accounts payable, finance and payroll.

The positions we offer are very diverse,”

Birnie Bus Service Assistant Directorof Human Resources Audrey Whitesaid. “My background is in hospitality.

When I came here, I was in awe of how

much it takes to keep the wheels turning

everyday.

“The wonderful thing about being a

family business is that we like to foster

our employees and promote from within.

There is room for advancement at this

company. We have many employees who

have been here for 20 or more years. You

come here as a stranger, but you become

family and it’s really a second home.”

Tim Birnie agreed, adding that his

company looks for people who want a

career, not just a job.

“We try to create an atmosphere where

every employee is treated the way I

would want to be treated myself. This

philosophy has been a key to our suc-

cess,” Tim Birnie said.

Keeping good employees goes a long

way in retaining customers. Perhaps no

position within any given bus company

has greater contact with the customer

base than drivers. Therefore, officials at

Birnie Bus Service place a high emphasis

on driver hiring and training programs

that have been in place for years and con-

tinue to evolve.

“Next to having a clean driving record

and background check, our bus drivers

must possess solid customer service skills

and be flexible,” Tim Birnie said. “This is

important because every day in the bus

business can be different. There are con-

stantly new challenges to deal with, such

as changes in weather, passenger behav-

ior, road conditions and detours. A good

driver is able to think fast on his/her

feet.”

White added that driver training at

Birnie Bus Service is conducted in-house.

“We meet and exceed state standards

with our training programs. This includes

refresher courses given to existing driv-

ers,” White said. “It’s important that their

driving skills stay sharp.

“In the interview process, we give

potential employees a three-page ques-

tionnaire. We look at their responses and

body language to see if they are a good fit

for our company. When hiring a driver,

we try to find out if that person would be

best driving students, motorcoaches or

for those with disabilities. It’s a pretty

intense program that we put our drivers

and monitors through.”

Officials at Birnie Bus Service try to be

creative as well when providing training.

“One of the new things we did this year

was bring in a guest speaker during one

of our training programs. The speaker

provided some new ideas and ways of

looking at things. The response we

received from our employees was very

positive,” Tim Birnie said. “Finding good

drivers is tough, but keeping good drivers

is easy because we treat them right. It’s

the same philosophy we use for all of our

people.”

According to Tim Birnie, his company

has been blessed over the years by being

located in an area where people tend to

possess strong work ethics and apprecia-

tion for the local climate.

“One of our biggest challenges as a

company is dealing with the winter

weather in upstate New York. A large

majority of the people we have working

for us have been brought up in the north-

east. They are used to dealing with winter

weather and winter driving,” he said.

Different Equipment For Different Uses

With over 1,000 vehicles in its

fleet, Birnie Bus Service has

built quite a cross section of

equipment to fit the different needs of the

company’s customer base. This includes

full-size motorcoaches and mini-coaches

“The goals of Birnie Bus Service have always been the same — to grow our core businesses; grow our team of valuable employees; take advantage of ever increasing opportunities such as privatization of school transportation; and grow our charter services across the country.”

as well as school buses and vans.

“In our charter division, we have

recently implemented new IC Bus HC

Platinum Series vehicles with luxurious

amenities. Our company has a number of

these buses on the road and they have

been successful for us. They include lux-

ury seating, restrooms, luggage

racks, reading lights, DVD players,

stereo systems and storage. Our

charter fleet also includes such

amenities as Wi-Fi and satellite

TV,” Tim Birnie said. “For some of

our college shuttle, transit and

demand-response work, we’ve

made a commitment to IC Bus and

its new commercial AC Series small shut-

tle. And we continue to purchase school

buses from IC Bus as part of our school

transportation fleet.

“All in all, we have a very diversified

fleet.”

He added that officials at Birnie Bus

Service have found success over the years

working with IC Bus.

“We feel they put together a good prod-

uct and believe their service is excellent,”

Tim Birnie said. “As a Trailways affiliate,

the new buses that we use have the right

green technology which allows us to

reduce our carbon footprint. In addition,

other technologies have improved safety

and security. For example, we take full

advantage of a GPS tracking system in

place. This allows us to know where our

vehicles are located anywhere in the

United States and Canada. We also know

the speed of which these vehicles are

traveling as well as any excess in idling

that is taking place.”

According to Tim Birnie, the riding

public always wants the best that they can

receive when it comes to equipment.

“Obviously, the more amenities that

you can provide the more these amenities

become part of the standard operating

procedure,” he said. “We try to take

advantage of technology as it presents

itself.”

This includes the use of a four-point

camera system installed in the company’s

school buses and some college shuttles.

This system aids bus drivers by helping

with safety and student management.

Besides technology, keeping

vehicles in clean and working order

remain high priorities at Birnie Bus

Service.

“We recognize that safety and

cleanliness go together. Repeat cus-

tomers are the key to business. Our

focus on ‘safe, reliable and courte-

ous’ transportation helps keep our

customers coming back. Cleanliness is

part of this focus,” Tim Birnie said.

Another advantage Birnie Bus Service

has enjoyed over the years has to do with

the number of locations in New York

state that the company maintains. This

number has grown to 17.

“We own the majority of these facili-

ties, while some are leased. There are

around 25 buildings that are part of our

company structure,” Tim Birnie said.

Dear Public Transportation Colleagues:

On October 2-5, public transportation professionals from across the world will

gather in New Orleans at the American Public Transportation Association’s

(APTA) once-every-three-years International EXPO, held in conjunction with

its Annual Meeting.

EXPO, the largest public transit-related conference in the world that show-

cases the latest innovations, products, and services in the industry, is the must-

attend event. This year, we are delighted that the Regional Transit Authority

will serve as our host, and you won’t want to miss the Host Forum: “The

Robust Recovery Underway in New Orleans.”

With more than 650 exhibitors displaying the latest advancements and

state-of-the-art technology, with hands-on demonstrations, and with

tremendous amounts of literature and background information available,

you can walk the show floor (or, in other words, you can traverse the

280,000 NSF and close to 23 miles of aisle carpet) and gain opportunity

after opportunity to move your system or business forward.

EXPO is held in conjunction with APTA’s Annual Meeting, which means you can expect a wide-

ranging lineup of educational sessions, general forums, technical tours, and extensive networking

opportunities. There will be a focus on such current hot topics as cyber security; managing when

disasters hit; and innovative thinking about existing revenue — and developing new revenue.

There will be a concentration on authorization, high-speed rail, going green, and contracting.

There will be two technical tours that follow the Annual Meeting (the streetcar expansion project

and the New Carrollton facility). There will also be a special opportunity to give of your time and

energy to help rebuild St. Bernard’s Parish — one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Once again, APTA will host the Bus Technical, Maintenance and Procurement Workshop in con-

junction with the Annual Meeting and EXPO (same dates, October 2-5). The workshop offers tran-

sit bus maintenance, procurement and materials professionals the opportunity to meet, discuss and

share the latest topics in their industry, all while having access to the conference and EXPO.

I have greatly enjoyed my past year as APTA Chair. While it was always fascinating and some-

times surprising, I can honestly say that one of the most rewarding aspects was the opportunity to

work closely with dedicated and talented public transit professionals from throughout the world.

So let me close out my Chair duties by welcoming all of you to New Orleans. Together, we’ll

let the good times roll!

Sincerely,

Mike Scanlon,APTA Chair

Major essentials that are needed for “thebus of tomorrow” are expected toinclude zero emissions, noted reliabil-

ity and strong infrastructure support. Accordingto officials from Proterra, “This bus of tomor-row is available today at a commercially compet-itive price — the company’s fast-chargeEcoRide™ BE-35 battery-electric bus.”

Now in use at several locations, the 35-footbus offers seating close to a 40-foot vehicle. Thecomposite body bus, built in Greenville, SC, isdesigned for an 18-year life span and is well suit-ed for 24/7 urban bus operations.

Among the “game changers” for the EcoRide™

BE-35 are Proterra’s 10-minute charge FastFill™

charging system and 2- to 4-hour (30 to 50 milestypical) repeated route capabilities, according toProterra Director of Business Development

Joshua Goldman.“The FastFill™ is an up to 500-kilowatt electric

bus charging system that can recharge theEcoRide’s™ batteries from empty to full in lessthan 10 minutes,” Goldman said.

The charging unit is comprised of both soft-ware and hardware to rapidly charge theTerraVolt™ Energy Storage System on theEcoRide™, with a greater than 92 percent energycharge efficiency in as little as 6 minutes. Whilesuch power transfer normally might require asubstantial grid connection to feed the fastcharge rate, company officials say that Proterra’sproprietary architecture allows for lower costand lower impact grid connections while main-taining high charge rates.

According to the company, Proterra’s

TerraVolt™ Energy Storage System, ProDriveSystem and FastFill™ charge stations provide asolid solution for fleet vehicle operators with thefollowing results:

nAn ability to use battery-electric vehicles asa one-to-one replacement of diesel driven vehi-cles for heavy-duty routes spanning the entireday, eliminating the need to return to vehicledepot for battery charging throughout the day;

n Reduces the cost of zero emission fleetsgiven lower individual vehicle and infrastruc-ture costs versus the higher costs of hydrogenalternatives;

n Lower on-board energy requirements givencharging capability, resulting in lower individualvehicle weight and investment costs;

n Significantly reduced maintenance costsresulting from absence of mechanical parts in abattery-electric drive system; and,

n Wide approach and departure toleranceswhich enable on-route placement of chargingstations.

Another key feature of the EcoRide™ BE-35 isits composite body, designed for extra long life, low weight and non-conductive safety, accordingto the company.

“The TerraVolt lithium-titanate batteries usedin the EcoRide™ BE-35 provide for safe chem-istry, a wide temperature operating range and 4-to 10-times longer cycle life than typical lithiumbatteries used in electric cars,” Goldman said.“One of the great features of our bus is that it getsbetween 17 and 29 miles per gallon (dieselequivalent range), which is significantly betterthan competing solutions.”

He added there are other savings involvedwith the EcoRide™ BE-35. Because the bus is notthe first heavy-duty vehicle to use a compositebody, available data shows repairs are 80 percentless expensive than those of a steel body bus,Goldman said. Also, the heavy-duty motor of theEcoRide™ BE-35 has fewer moving parts, requires no constant oil changes and should berobust enough to last the vehicle’s life, accordingto Proterra. As for the brakes, with more than 90percent regeneration of energy from braking tothe battery taking place, brake systems shouldlast longer with less frequent repairs and replace-ments.

Answering The Call

Proterra, headquartered in Golden, CO,

was founded in 2004 by Dale Hill with avision to design and manufacture world-

leading advanced technology in heavy-dutyvehicles that are powered solely by clean domes-tic fuels.

After launching a successful fleet of CNGhybrid-electric buses for another company in the1990s that are still in use in Denver, CO, Hillformed Proterra. The goal was to develop anddeliver the “bus of tomorrow” to meet a needexpressed by the Federal Transit Administration(FTA).

“Due to his past success, the FTA approachedDale Hill in 2004 and asked him to develop afuel cell bus of tomorrow. He responded that hewould make a battery-dominate hybrid bus thatwould feature a fuel cell serving as a hybrid

range extender, to extend the range of thebus when its batteries were completed,”Goldman said. “Dale began to develop hisfuel cell bus with the lion’s share of thework starting in 2007. In 2008, we alsostarted developing a fast-charge electricbus based on some of our initial successeswith the battery we chose for the hybridfuel cell vehicle.”

Soon after the start of Proterra, thecompany recognized the benefits of itsTerraVolt™ batteries and their inherentlysafe chemistry. The development of theEcoRide™ and FastFill™ charging systemfollowed.

With the launch of the EcoRide™ BE-35, Proterra has become a leading innova-tor in zero emissions commercial vehiclesolutions. Its technology is expected tohelp transit agencies deliver clean, quietrunning, rider and neighborhood friendlyvehicles that meet government regulationsand local mandates, according to the com-pany. In fact, Proterra has been recognizedby the California Air Resources Board(CARB) as being the first to deliver a full-sizetransit vehicle that meets California’s ZeroEmission Bus Rules, according to the company.

“Our focus is to create safe and economicalvehicles and charging systems that offer thehighest per passenger fuel economy of any pub-lic transit option, along with the lowest operatingcosts,” Goldman said. “While our vehicles arepure zero-emission buses, the energy source ofour electric charging stations can range from avariety of alternative fuels.”

Proterra is continuing to work with the U.S.federal government in the research of hydrogen-fueled range extension, though Goldman saidmarket economics are currently not in place formass commercialization of this option until feed-

stock fuel costs come down significantly. “The current EcoRide™ is fast-charge, plug-in

capable with a 30- to 50-mile range. However, the range for fuel cell buses can be extendedanother 200 to 250 miles with hydrogen storedon the roof of the bus. The hydrogen goes thougha pair of fuel cell engines for onboard re-charg-ing of the batteries,” Goldman said. “We believethere may be a future for hydrogen buses, butwith the plug-in EcoRide™ BE-35, we are able totake advantage of more economical electricitycosts. With a pure electric bus, there is potentialto experience $400,000 or more in fuel costs sav-ings over a 12-year life span compared to con-ventional diesel buses, and similar fuel savingswhen compared to diesel hybrids. Even more

important, transit agencies can plan forthe future with predictable electricityprices rather than being at the mercy ofcontinual price spikes in fossil fuels.”

Partners Help Spread The Word

Any company that focuses on newtechnology and ideas is greatlybenefited by partners with the

same goals. Proterra has had severalpartners throughout its history amongtransit, finance and government entitiesthat share the company’s vision of safe, cost effective and clean transportation.

“This partner list is growing toinclude our most recent investors whoare sure to take our business to the nextlevel,” Goldman said.

Groups helping Proterra succeed tothe next level come in the form of bothpublic and private partnerships. On thepublic side, many transit and govern-ment agencies remain active in demand-ing clean technology, according to

Goldman. On the private side, meanwhile,Proterra’s vendors continue to provide key com-ponents and technology that come in the form ofchargers, batteries, motors, etc. Proterra has alsobenefited from private investment firms wholook at technology as a solid return on invest-ment.

Goldman credits several transit agencies inhelping get Proterra’s projects off the ground andinto transit service.

“We are blessed to have strong partners as ourearly adopters. This includes Foothill Transit, inWest Covina, CA; VIA Metropolitan Transit, inSan Antonio, TX; and StarMetro, in Tallahassee,FL, among others,” he said. “All these agencies

Voith Turbo is introducing the newMagnetarder at the APTA Expo 2011, beingheld in New Orleans, LA, on October 2-5.The new retarder stands out by its excep-tional low weight and can be retrofittedwithout any modifications to the driveline.

In the home market of Germany, it’savailable as an ex-works option in virtuallyall Mercedes-Benz Atego mid-size trucks.IVECO has issued a retrofit approval for

the Eurocargo. In the midibus market, theVoith Magnetarder is already used asseries-installed equipment at AnadoluIsuzu, Turkey, and at SOR in the CzechRepublic.

According to the company, the VoithMagnetarder operates with the world’smost powerful permanent magnets.Weighing only 86 pounds (39 kilograms), itis the lightest secondary retarder, braking

buses and trucks in the 7.5–16 ton rangecomfortably and safely. It also convincesby its excellent braking powers with abraking torque of up to 480 brake horse-power (650 Nm).

The Magnetarder backs up the servicebrake so efficiently that over 60 percent ofall braking operations can be performed bythis secondary unit. This is added by a gainin comfort owing to reduced gear-shiftingmovements and tangentially higher averagespeeds.

The Magnetarder runs directly on theprop shaft, so that the shaft does not have tobe shortened when the retarder is installed. The patented principle is universally appli-cable, easy to install and highly cost-effec-tive. This makes the Magnetarder attrac-tive, both as original equipment and alsofor retrofits.

During test drives in the Swiss Alps, onthe Brenner and the San Bernardino Passwith extremely steep and long descents, theMagnetarder proved itself in a 7.5-ton truckwith a trailer. It also stood out in practicaldriving tests with Atego customer vehicles.

In a test vehicle, the front brake liningsstill had the same thickness as an originalset even after 6,213 miles (10,000 kilome-ters). Further measurements showed thatthe application of the service brake couldbe reduced by more than 60 percent.

School buses are also a key market seg-ment for the Magnetarder. The transport ofsuch precious cargo must be a priority andwith the highest levels of safeguard possible.

“We are currently planning for another

facility to be located in southern New

York state.”

The company’s headquarters, mean-

while, remain in Rome, a city with a pop-

ulation of 34,950 residents and located

approximately 35 miles east of Syracuse.

Birnie Bus Service’s main corporate

facility can be found on the former

Griffiss U.S. Air Force Base, which

closed in 1995.

“We are located in a former vehicle

maintenance building that was once part

of the air force base. We completely ren-

ovated this facility about 10 years ago,

and now have a very nice corporate office

and a rather large maintenance shop in

place,” Tim Birnie said. “We also

installed an up-to-date, state-of-the-art

painting facility. There was already a

painting facility here that we used for a

number of years until we decided our

company needed an update. The old

painting facility then became our sand

blasting booth, while we built a new

facility that can handle any vehicle from

a small bus to a 45-foot motorcoach.”

Painting buses has become a niche

offering that Birnie Bus Service now spe-

cializes in for the surrounding transporta-

tion industry.

“Many places rely on us due to current

regulations for operating a painting facil-

ity. We not only provide our own painting

work, but we paint vehicles for other bus

companies as well as school districts,”

Tim Birnie said.

Today’s Challenges And Future Goals

In the wake of recent serious bus acci-

dents that have taken place in differ-

ent areas of the United States, today’s

transportation operators are facing new

challenges that must be addressed in

order to remain competitive. These acci-

dents have brought additional scrutiny to

bus operators from government regula-

tors as well as members

of the pubic.

“You have to take what

is going on within the

bus industry seriously

regarding these acci-

dents. As a company,

however, we are not

against extra scrutiny

because we run a top-

notch service,” Tim

Birnie said. “In today’s

world, you have to cross every ‘t’ and dot

every ‘i’ as our industry is under the

microscope. It’s been an interesting chal-

lenge for the industry as a whole.”

Another challenge for bus operators is

today’s high cost of fuel and related

expenses. To help soften the blow of

higher fuel prices, officials at Birnie Bus

Service pre-buy fuel at opportune times

as well as purchase the most efficient

equipment that is available. The company

also makes sure current buses remain in

fine working order to help reduce fuelusage.

He added that high fuel prices couldactually provide a benefit as it pertains topublic transportation use.

“Our business stays fairly consistent. Ifthere is another fuel crisis, however, itcould influence ridership in a positivemanner. More people may want to leavetheir own vehicles at home,” Tim Birniesaid.

Regarding school transportation, headded that there are more school busesrunning in New York than in any other

state. This is due, in part, to the state’spopulation, ranked third highest in thecountry, as well as the historic depend-ence on this form of travel among NewYork educators and residents.

Birnie Bus Service officials have beenbusy over the years trying to promote thebenefits of school bus privatization.

“Obviously, I come with a prejudicialpoint of view on this subject, but we feelschool districts from around the countrythat provide their own bus transportationcould save a lot of money by going to pri-vatization — letting private bus compa-

nies provide the bus service for them,”Tim Birnie said. “This is not to be nega-tive about the bus drivers who work forschool districts because they are good anddedicated people.

“However, we have a different philoso-phy on transportation than some, andbelieve school districts can save millionsof dollars through privatization. Thissaved money can then be used for educa-tion purposes in the classroom. There is atrend in place for more privatization, butwe would like to see this trend move a lit-tle quicker.”

As for the overall future of his compa-ny, Tim Birnie is optimistic that BirnieBus Service will continue to grow its corebusinesses, continue to foster strong rela-tionships with customers and employees, and take advantage of opportunities asthey present themselves.

“Our industry touches the lives ofalmost everyone — from school trans-portation to transit to charter service,”Tim Birnie said. “We at Birnie BusService look forward to the future by con-tinually meeting the needs of customersthrough ‘safe, reliable and courteous’transportation.”

The new Voith Magnetarder: Higher eco nomy, higher safety, higher driving comfort and higher eco-friendlyness.

Thanks to its sensationally low weight of just 86 pounds and its enormously high braking power, the new Voith Magne-tarder not only reduces wear on the service brake but also allows higher average speeds. The integration of the Magnetarder into the propshaft is a com-pletely new way of installation, which is unique in the world market. Fitting or retrofitting trucks and coaches between

7.5 and 16 t has never been easier or more practical. In a field test, the Voith Magne tarder got an enthusiastic recep-tion from drivers and operators. Because even after more than 6 000 test miles, the front brake pads still had the same thickness as a new original set.

The Hill Country Transit District (HCTD)serves a 9,000 square mile area deep in theheart of Central Texas and is known as the TheHOP. It is a political subdivision of the state ofTexas, and uses the trademark name The HOPto reflect how easy it can be to just “hop” on abus and get around the community.

This service area consists of nine growingcounties that required two urban divisions serv-ing five area cities with fixed-route and ADAcomplementary paratransit service. The HOPregularly coordinates trips for the rural andurban area passengers.

In 2010 The HOP carried 400,000 passengersin its urban divisions, using 12 fixed-bus routes. The HOP fixed route buses drive over 500,000miles annually.

The HOP encourages use of the public tran-sit system by all members of the general public, and encourages various agencies to ensure theirclients are aware of transit services. To themaximum extent possible, HCTD, serving asthe region’s existing transportation provider, works to meet transportation requirementsthrough the use of the public transit system inseveral ways.

1. The HOP encourages users and agencies touse fixed-route service whenever possible.

2. The HOP provides an easy means foragencies to purchase tokens, multi-ride tickets,

and monthly passes for their clients for use onfixed-route service, and offers the sale of faremedia to all transit users via mail and throughlocal outlets.

3. The HOP provides travel training for agen-cies and groups, and for individuals.

4. Agencies and members of the general pub-lic can rely on the HOP as the transportationprovider to continue to serve the area, connect-ing rural and urban service.

The HOP also provides ADA complementary

paratransit service. Additionally, The HOP pro-vides transit trips through various serviceagreements, working within the community toidentify and meet transit needs.

Prior to 2010, HCTD participated in theplacement of more than 25 shelters in theKilleen Urban Division and 7 shelters in theTemple Urban Division. The HOP has workedwith schools as well, resulting in the placementof passenger benches at fixed route bus stops.

In 2010, The HOP began installation of an addi-tional 100 passenger shelters throughout the urbanareas as part of the New Freedom project. Morethan 120 new shelters have been ordered, andmore than a third of those have already beeninstalled. The shelters are painted the same classicgreen shade The HOP adopted for its color schemeand seen on its bus fleet.

The shelters were designed and manufac-tured by HANDI-HUT, a Clifton, NJ, manufac-turer (www.handi-hut.com), the lowest biddermeeting the stringent specifications. ADVERTORIAL

Paradigm Technology Consulting, LLC (PTC) has releasedthe next generation of its Paradigm Transportation Suite (PTS).It’s designed with interface tables to streamline integrationsbetween PTS and other operational applications, and a new userinterface focusing on ease-of-entry and work flow. One of thekey integrations will be with Enghouse Transportation’sCoachWorks product.

“With our new relationship, we are able to bring a comprehen-sive solution to the transportation industry by a single vendor,”stated Michael Gummel, Product Engineer for ParadigmTechnology Consulting, LLC (PTC).

Bridgette Hobart-Janeczko, CPA, President of PTC, adds that,“It was important for us to partner with a large, financially stableorganization such as Enghouse Systems Ltd (Toronto StockExchange - ENG). It is based in North America, has been in thetransportation industry for a number of years and has multiplesolutions, all of which will benefit our customers. With the affilia-tion of our two organizations’ expertise and breadth of offerings,we are able to provide companies with a comprehensive turnkeysolution.”

Paradigm Transportation Suite (PTS) is the powerful, workforce management-focused suite of applications for the transporta-tion industry. PTS is designed to significantly reduce the highoperating costs associated with processing driver trip reports, sim-plify driver and fleet management reporting and capture the widerange of information recorded by drivers.

PTS also provides extensive functionality for the managementof human resources (HR), DOT compliance tracking, employeeperformance and advanced payroll calculations for labor manage-ment.

Many of the systems that are on the market today have post-tripaccounting that perform the basics, such as hours and rates. PTSdoes an exceptional job there as well, but the greatest differentia-tor is the ability of the system to handle unions, overtime pay, guar-anteed pay, overlaps, rate management and HR compliance func-tionality.

According to Michael Gummel, “The rules and guiding princi-ples used to structure and govern employment, particularly in thetransportation industry, are becoming strategic to a company’shuman resources. For example, PTS handles much of the driver-specific information required by regulatory agencies, as well as I9,training, licenses, certifications, employee drug testing, illnessesand injuries, grievances and other complaints, performancereviews and terminations.”

Alexander Dennis To Unveil New

Look For Double Deck Range

Officials from Alexander Dennis say all three options in the ADIproduct line-up – transit, commuter and open-top – are set to benefitfrom a new look that will be progressively rolled out over the next 18months, including vehicles that will form part of significant new tran-sit orders likely to be announced at the APTA EXPO in New Orleans.

The new appearance comes on the back of fleet sales in recent yearsto Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco,Washington, D.C. and Seattle.

And, adding to the appeal of the high-capacity, three-axle Enviro500models, ADI is also set to announce plans for a new, low height, “goanywhere” double deck range.

The company says the buses will have the same carrying capacity asexisting models (around 100) and retain the same maneuverability asthe Enviro500. Because of the reduced height, the buses can open newroute options in the USA and Canada.

Rotary Lift is now offering the EFX60, a newheavy-duty inground scissor lift that incorpo-rates patented design features to make lift setupand operation faster and easier.

According to the company, the EFX60 usesRotary Lift’s patented universal style lifting sad-dle with flip-up adapters to make lift set-up abreeze. The lift is compatible with the industry’swidest selection of lightweight adapters, many ofwhich are third-party certified. The EFX60 hasan infinite adapter adjustment range, enablingtechnicians to precisely position adapters exact-ly where they’re needed for proper lifting.

Rotary Lift officials say the adapters alsoswivel, making it possible to pick up vehiclesby either the frame or the axle. As a result, tech-nicians using the EFX60 can properly lift andservice any medium-duty or heavy-duty vehicleweighing up to 60,000 lbs.

“The biggest complaint we hear about otheringround scissor lifts is that they are difficult andtime-consuming to set up,” explains Doug Spiller,Rotary Lift heavy duty product manager. “Wedesigned the EFX60 to be faster and easier.Technicians can quickly set up the EFX60 with onehand. That means they get to work faster, for lessdowntime.”

The Rotary Lift product development teamspent two years refining the heavy-duty ingroundscissor lift design for the EFX60. Part of Rotary

Lift’s standard R&D process includes cycling anew lift 20,000 times at capacity to ensure it meets

the company’s strenuous durability and perform-ance standards. Knowing that scissor lifts are moreprone to wear than other lift styles, Rotary ran theEFX60 for 30,000 test cycles — the equivalent of15 to 30 years of service life.

Rotary Lift’s EFX60 uses heavier, larger center-ing links. According to Rotary, the EFX60’s heav-ier pivot pins are 37 percent stronger and offer 12.5percent more bearing surface area for extendedservice life. The pins are also protected by RotaryLift’s exclusive Smartguard® corrosion protection. Finally, the company says EFX60’s reinforcedcover plates are 59 percent stronger than others.

“When you’re picking up trucks, buses andheavy equipment, you want to know that your liftis up to the task,” says Spiller. “The EFX60 is thestrongest heavy-duty inground scissor lift you canbuy. The lift’s superior strength also providesgreater service life, reduced maintenance and bet-ter overall productivity.”

Because technician safety is paramount, theRotary Lift EFX60 also features a patented lockingsystem. The EFX60 has been third-party tested byETL and is ALI certified to meet ANSI safety andperformance standards. It is made in the U.S.A.

“It was a natural progression to apply for DBE certification afterCoachCrafters became 55 percent woman owned earlier this year. It’s our intention to pursue certification throughout the entire coun-try, although the process is so paperwork intensive that it will take untilnext year for that to happen.”

Stertil-Koni’s (www.stertil-koni.com), newEarthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift is nowALI/ETL certified and available for immediatesale in the United States.

It has no connecting cables or wires and hasa variable speed controller (patent pend-ing). It also offers an advanced operat-ing system with a graphical user inter-face that digitally displays lift speed, theweight bearing on the individual col-umn, battery charge level, lift direction, lift extension measurement and more.

Another feature is the self-regenerat-ing power supply that can increase pro-ductivity.

“The Earthlift’s patented Active EnergyRetrieval (AER) System captures the kinet-ic energy generated by a raised vehicle as itdescends on the lift and uses it to recharge its ownbatteries,” Jean DellAmore, Ph.D., Stertil-KoniUSA president, said. “The AER makes the Earthliftultra-energy-efficient, allowing it to provide anunheard of 27 lifting cycles under a full load.”

DellAmore said that smaller loads mean evenmore lifting cycles from a single charge, butthat all things being equal, the EarthliftWireless Mobile Column Lift allows users to

enjoy 35 percent more lifting cycles. He saidthat the Earthlift’s energy efficiency coupledwith its ecologically responsible design make itthe industry’s “biggest lift innovation with thesmallest carbon footprint.”

The Earthlift’s components are 98 percentrecyclable, its closed hydraulic system usesbiodegradable Panolin oil, its electrical systemcomplies with RoHs directives, and its deep-cycle marine batteries can be completely recy-cled. The company says the green advantages canhelp companies earn LEED (Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design).

Columns can be operated independently and

up to eight Earthlifts can be wirelessly linked inseconds, using Stertil-Koni’s ID Key technology.Once linked, the multiple lifts function as oneseamless, synchronized system that delivers safe, smooth control even when load distribution is

unbalanced. The Earthlift’s variablespeed control allows the operator toadjust vehicle height with accuracy, allowing procedures like a gearboxreplacement to be undertaken with ease.Programming options also enable usersto adjust the maximum lifting height andto perform on-demand fault diagnoses.

The Earthlift Wireless MobileColumn Lift has an 18,000-pound loadcapacity and comes with 14-inch pick-up forks standard, allowing it to safelyaccommodate super-single and military

tires, according to the tire manufacturer’sinstructions. The lift is designed to provide a 10-inch clearance between the column and thevehicle, preventing contact in the event of anon-lift tire or suspension failure.

The Earthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift iscertified by the Automotive Lift Institute Inc.(ALI) (www.autolift.org/cert.htm) and theElectrical Testing Laboratories (ETL).

Cummins Announces Intent To Meet

New Fuel-Efficiency And Greenhouse

Gas Standards Early

Upon release of the first-ever greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions andfuel-efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehi-cles, Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) officials say the company affirms itssupport for the regulation and announces plans to certify its engines earlyto meet these standards. The company has worked on the regulation witha wide range of stakeholders over the past several years and is develop-ing the clean and efficient technology that will be needed to comply.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S.Department of Transportation (DOT) proposed this regulation in October2010 after President Barack Obama directed the agencies to coordinateefforts and propose a single national GHG reduction and fuel-efficiencyprogram. The agencies led an open process, and Cummins collaboratedwith other engine and vehicle manufacturers, technology suppliers, fleetsand environmental organizations to provide input. The result is a work-able regulatory structure that accommodates the diverse needs of thecommercial vehicle sector.

"Environmental regulations can often be difficult for industry, addingcost and complexity. So early on, Cummins set out with the goal of help-ing the government establish a clear, consistent, challenging and enforce-able regulation that recognizes the needs of business and provides incen-tives to companies that create innovative technologies as well as jobs inthis country," said Rich Freeland, Cummins vice president and president- engine business. "This regulation will add real value for our customersas better fuel economy lowers their operating costs while significantlybenefitting the environment."

Cummins continues to develop technologies that meet stringent crite-ria emissions (such as those for oxides of nitrogen, orNOx) as well as improve the efficiency of its engines.Last year, the Company was awarded nearly $54 mil-lion in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy(DOE) to support systems-level technology develop-ment, integration and demonstration for highly effi-cient advanced-technology powertrains. By burningless fuel in the engine, carbon dioxide (CO2), whichis the main GHG controlled under this regulation, issimultaneously reduced. The rule finalized by theEPA and the DOT establishes equivalent CO2 andfuel-efficiency standards for engines in 2014 and2017.

Cummins' lineup of North American on-highwayengines, from the ISB6.7 to the ISX15, will be certi-fied to meet new onboard diagnostic (OBD) require-ments on Jan. 1, 2013. To provide a single productlaunch and multiyear stability for customers, theseproducts will also comply with the GHG and fuel-efficiency regulations.

"The emissions technologies in use today providethe foundation for meeting the 2014 standards, andCummins is ready to meet this regulation in 2013,"said Dr. Steve Charlton, Cummins vice president andchief technical officer - engine business. "Certifyingour engines early will deliver additional fuel econo-my benefits to end-user customers and provide instal-lation stability to our OEM customers. Continuingthe use of our existing architecture means that cus-tomers can also expect improved reliability. This issimply part of the march down a path that we outlinedseveral years ago to deliver increasingly clean, effi-cient and reliable products to our customers."

The Full Distinctive Systems

Product Line Now Available

The past few years have been difficult for the industry due to thechallenging economy. Many in the Motorcoach and Travel Industryhave found that the availability of investment capital has been signifi-cantly constricted. However, the needs of these operators have notchanged. They still require the most advance software available to helpthem efficiently operate their companies.

Distinctive Systems Inc. is now offering a new rental option that canallow those who may not want to make an initial capital investment insoftware to utilize the Distinctive Systems software applications.

Distinctive Systems products are now available via a new softwarerental option. Thisrental option is analternative to fullpurchase of DSLsoftware. Both meth-ods of procurement(rental or purchase)are available across

the entire Distinctive Systems product offerings. Distinctive Systems Inc. President Don Greenglass said: "We are

very happy to be able to offer any North American Operator all six ofour product versions with the choice of renting the usage of the prod-ucts, or outright purchasing. By having these alternatives available, prospective clients can concentrate on choosing the edition (and func-tionality) that makes the most sense for their company. The method ofacquiring access to the products becomes secondary to deciding onwhich applications and edition is the best fit for them."

The company says it is the intent of this new offeringto make all of the DSL products available to all operatorsin affordable options, according to the needs of eachorganization. As an example of the affordability of therental option, an entry level Coach Manager, TBS orVMS Express system will cost $137.63 per month. As anadded benefit, clients who elect to utilize the rentaloption are automatically enrolled in the DistinctiveSystems world class Annual Maintenance Plan.

Today's on-highway diesel engines in the UnitedStates emit 99 percent less Particulate Matter (PM) andNOx than they did 30 years ago. The Company's use ofSelective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology tomeet the EPA's stringent 2010 emissions standards is abuilding block for the new GHG and fuel-efficiencystandards. SCR not only reduces NOx to near- zero lev-els, but it also enables reduced fuel consumption. As aresult, the Cummins 2010 Heavy-Duty and MidRangeengines deliver up to 6 percent improved fuel efficien-cy compared with the previous models.

Miami-Dade Transit Receives Thermo King Energy Efficiency Leader Award

In a move to improve energy efficiencyand reduce operational costs, Miami-DadeTransit (MDT), of Miami, FL,the nation’s 14th largest publictransit system, has electrifiedkey accessories on 13 new coun-ty buses. MDT officials expectthe electrified buses to be 25percent more fuel efficient.

In recognition of MDT’selectrification efforts, the tran-sit system received the “EnergyEfficiency Leader Award” fromThermo King, during anawards presentation March 3 atthe Miami Beach ConventionCenter. The award ceremonywas conducted in conjunctionwith the MiaGreen Conference,a major green professionalevent.

The award was presented toMDT Director Harpal S.Kapoor by leaders fromThermo King, a manufacturer of transporttemperature control systems for a variety ofmobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll

Rand, which worked with MDT on electri-fying the buses.

“By electrifying accessories on MDTbuses, we are saving money and operatingour buses more efficiently,” Kapoor said.

“This also reflects our long-term commit-ment to increasing sustainability for our

community.”MDT is one of the

nation’s first transit agen-cies to electrify bus acces-sories. The upgrades pro-vide a comfortable ride forthe agency’s more than 70million annual bus passen-gers, reduce costs anddemonstrate the county’scommitment to environ-mentally aware solutions, according to MDT officials.

“Miami-Dade Transit isa progressive agency witha demonstrated commit-ment to innovative, sus-tainable solutions,” saidMartin Duffy, vice presi-dent of sales and marketdevelopment for ThermoKing. “In the current econ-

omy, where fuel prices continue to escalate, energy efficient transport solutions are morecritical than ever before.”

The electrified accessories include thepropulsion system; the radiator fans; andthe heating, ventilation and air conditioningsystem. A major piece of the bus electrifica-tion effort is the air conditioning system.Electric power steering will be added whenthe manufacturer makes it available.

“MDT had confidence that the ThermoKing system would fit well into MDT oper-ations as they provide good local customerservice and after sales support for theirproducts,” said MDT Public InformationOfficer Karla Damian. “Their products haveproven to be reliable and efficient, as wellas environmentally friendly, using R-407Crefrigerant.

“Thermo King worked hand-in-hand withMDT bus manufacturers to ensure success-ful integration with other bus systems. Inaddition to savings in fuel costs, there willbe savings in maintenance costs of approxi-mately $10,000 per bus per year, across thehybrid fleet. The projected average annualsavings for both fuel and maintenance isanticipated to be more than $20,000 perbus.”

Florida’s largest public transit agency,MDT has 822 buses in its total fleet, includ-ing 25 New Flyer 60-foot diesel/electric

hybrids and 13 NABI 40-foot diesel/electrichybrids with electrified accessories. InMarch 2011, the addition of five new 40-foot Gillig diesel/electric hybrids with elec-trified accessories brought the hybrid fleet to43 buses and the total fleet to 822 buses. Allbuses in the fleet use biodiesel fuel and areprogrammed for automatic idle shutdown.

In 2010, as part of its effort to implementenvironmentally conscious initiatives, MDTalso committed to purchasing only hybridbuses in the future. Over the next five years, the agency plans to electrify other bus com-ponents such as power steering, doors, aircompressors, wheelchair ramps, etc.

“More and more MDT is being recog-nized for its efforts in reducing its carbonfootprint and for being at the forefront ofthe use of diesel-electric hybrid technolo-gy,” Damian said. “Miami-Dade County’sfocus is to achieve aggressive climatechange, water conservation, energy andgreenhouse gas reduction goals to sustainthe county’s communities and naturalresources. This effort includes the county’simplementation of GreenPrint, which is aframework to synchronize government andcommunity goals and initiatives.

“In following the county’s GreenPrint

goals, Miami-Dade Transit is demonstratingits long-term commitment to increasing thecounty’s sustainability by reducing its busfleet’s carbon footprint and improving itsfuel economy.”

are at various levels of vehicle deployment,

much in part to strong leadership and financial

support.

“An additional handful of transit systems

have been awarded U.S. Department of

Transportation’s TIGGER II grants for the pur-

chase of electric buses. We hope to become a

partner with them for furthering a pilot pro-

gram resulting in full-fledged commercial sup-

ply. In the summer of 2011, a larger number of

public agencies applied for TIGGER II and

other federal grant programs in order to

expand market deployment around the country.

We are also looking to Canada for partners to

further our project developments.”

Goldman said the market for clean and effi-

cient transportation continues to grow on a

monthly basis, especially as fuel prices

become more volatile.

“We have what we feel is a class-leading

product and a very accepting customer base.

The form of transportation that we offer is still

in its early stages of deployment, but there is

no reason we cannot be on equal, if not better,

footing to hybrid and natural gas buses over

the next few years,” he said. “As a company,

we appreciate the early efforts of such agen-

cies as Foothill Transit, Via Metropolitan

Transit, StarMetro and others. They were the

early champions that got our project off the

ground. We are now starting to see other sys-

tems looking at electric buses at a viable

option.”

He added that Proterra has been able to help

customers receive well-funded government

grants to help pilot the company’s EcoRide™

and charging system program.

“Providing a pure zero emissions bus makes

it much easier to quantify GHG (greenhouse

gas) impact compared to mobile source car-

bon-based fuels,” Goldman said. “We also

work with a customer’s utility source to help

with the purchase or installation of renewable

sources of electricity (such as wind and solar).

This allows for a near zero well-to-wheel GHG

impact for moving public passengers.

“I will be the first to admit there is no such

thing as a zero emissions vehicle. For example,

such parts as tires, plastics and rubber hoses all

give off some emissions. It’s part of that new

car smell we all like. But, it terms of real emis-

sions compared to any other technology except

fuel cell, electric vehicles are the most emis-

sions-free that can be purchased. About the

only thing that tends to beat us in the per-pas-

senger fuel economy race is the bicycle.”

Manufacturing In South Carolina

Since the company’s beginning in 2004,

Proterra has assembled a strong manage-

ment and engineering team experienced

in heavy-duty vehicles; state-of-the-art manu-

facturing; and advanced energy storage, charg-

ing and drive systems.

The company announced in 2010 its plan to

build a full-scale research and development

center and manufacturing plant on the campus

of Clemson University’s International Center

for Automotive Research (CUICAR), located

in Greenville, SC. Moving manufacturing to

Greenville provides Proterra with access to

tremendous research and development

resources for the EcoRide™ BE-35 and the

FastFill™ charging stations.

“Our goal is to construct over 1,500 buses

per year and grow the company to more than

800 employees over the next five years,”

Goldman said. “We have already moved man-

ufacturing from our prototyping facility in

Golden, CO, to a 220,000-square-foot assem-

bly plant in Greenville, SC, to meet near term

demand. This interim facility, with a three-year

lease, is capable of producing more than 200

EcoRide™ buses per year.”

Among the early adopter transit agencies

helping get Proterra’s technology and buses

moving forward has been California's Foothill

Transit. The agency has acquired three

EcoRide™ BE-35 buses and two FastFill™

chargers with options for nine more buses.

According to Goldman, these vehicles allow

Foothill Transit to be ahead of the impending

CARB zero emissions bus requirement at a

fraction of the cost of current trolley bus and

fuel cell bus systems.

“Foothill Transit has been driving our vehi-

cles in revenue service since September 2010

with remarkable efficiency and reliability,

given the product’s pilot nature,” Goldman

said. “The good news is that the federal gov-

ernment continues to provide funding for this

type of project and the market continues to

increase. Most importantly, however, is that

Foothill Transit is driving electric buses every-

day with passengers on them.

“We are also now building buses for VIA

Metropolitan Transit and StarMetro. Just as

essential, Altoona testing is taking place on one

of our buses. The goal is to have this testing com-

pleted by the first quarter of 2012.”

What Does The Future Hold?

The days of thinking that electric bus tech-

nology can only serve niche markets may

soon be over. At Proterra, officials see

the EcoRide™ BE-35 as a viable mainstream

transit option.

“Any repeated route on a 2-hour/40-mile cycle

can be well served by our product. We are also

working on a longer range commuter version for

the remaining rush hour routes,” Goldman said.

“Thanks to on-route fast charging that fully

recharges batteries in less time than a typical driv-

er layover, we are able to provide safe, economi-

cal and zero emission buses. We also provide

simple infrastructure benefits compared to com-

petitive technologies.

“Maybe our niche is zero emissions, but our

focus is moving passengers at an economical rate.

We think this need is uniform across the world.”

Proterra officials look forward to working

with current and new customers to further

demonstrate the adaptability of its products to a

growing user base in a variety of climates and

drive cycles. The company also announced in

June that a recent investment of $30 million has

taken place to accelerate the commercialization

of Proterra’s fast-charge transit buses and charg-

ing system. The investment is being led by

Silicon Valley venture firm Kleiner Perkins

Caufield & Byers (KPCB), and also includes

GM Ventures; Mitsui & Co., Ltd.; Vision Ridge

Partners; and 88 Green Ventures, LLC.

This investment enables Proterra to complete

critical federal validation testing of its bus, roll

out additional pilot fleets and complete initia-

tives to significantly reduce costs and increase

volume production at its Greenville plant.

“We produced a handful of buses in 2009 and

2010, but expect our numbers to double this year

and expand further in 2012,” Goldman said.

“Proterra has an opportunity, within three years,

to produce over 400 buses should the market

continue to show itself. We will focus on increas-

ing product reliability and efficiency, all the

while growing our team and partnerships.

“Proterra continues to provide fuel cell buses

for various federal research contracts, but our

main focus is on the pure battery-powered bus.

Battery technology has come along well enough

to now be able to provide a true zero emissions

bus, one that is both economically viable as well

as environmentally sustainable.

“This is the ‘rocket-to-the-moon’ moment for

our generation as it pertains to sustainable mobil-

ity. We at Proterra feel very honored to be a part

of this movement, and it’s exciting.”

Van Hool A300L

The Van Hool A300L is a 40-foot, true low-floor, heavy-duty

transit bus that is compatible for all modes of people moving

transportation. From inter-city transit to employee shuttle to air-

port and ground transportation, the A300L is a viable solution

for all applications. Designed to promote quick and easy pas-

senger flow, the Van Hool A300L offers an extremely smooth

ride aboard a distinctly modern urban transit bus.

A true low-floor interior design from front to rear makes enter-

ing and walking through the bus simple and less cumbersome.

Its stepless design makes transitioning from the street to the bus

easy and convenient, whether using the fold-out ADA-approved

ramp or stepping directly from the curb to the inside of the bus.

The A300L is available with two- and three-door configurations,

which help to distribute passengers throughout the vehicle.

The engine is located mid-ship – halfway between the front

and rear axles. This provides a smoother, less bouncy ride than

other bus designs. Performing engine maintenance is much

easier than on the traditional rear engine buses thanks to the

multiple service panels located inside, outside, and underneath

the bus. The combination of low-floors, high ceilings, expansive

windows and improved circulation gives passengers the dis-

tinct feeling of openness rather than feeling confined in an

enclosed compartment, and offers a substantial improvement

in the quality and customer-friendliness of public transport.

Van Hool A300L FC - Fuel Cell

The Van Hool Company was honored with the Bus World

Kortrijk 2009 Grand Environment Award, citing the company’s

A330 Fuel Cell model. The hybrid-diesel electric bus offers a

uniquely environmentally-friendly alternative for public trans-

port providers. In the United States the Van Hool A330 Fuel

Cell has been well received by the American public where part-

ners ABC, Van Hool, and AC Transit pioneered a “green” tran-

sit initiative in 2005. Along with AC Transit, SunLine Transit and

Connecticut Transit have this model in current service.

This next generation of Van Hool’s fuel cell bus – the Van

Hool A300L FC – retains its place as one of the most technical-

ly advanced transit buses available today. This clean, low-floor,

quiet, energy efficient 40-foot transit emits only water vapor

from the tailpipe. Virtually noiseless, yet powerful enough to

climb grades in excess of 18 percent and reach speeds of 50

mph, the A300L FC is powered by a zero-emission hydrogen-

fueled, hybrid-electric engine, utilizing a 120 kW fuel cell sys-

tem, onboard battery power, and regenerative braking.

Proterra

EcoRide™ BE-35

Proterra’s EcoRide™ 35-foot, low-floor composite body transit bus is

built upon a battery-electric vehicle architecture including the key

enabling technologies:

The proprietary composite body reduces weight approximately 20-40

percent over a conventional steel or aluminum bus, is crash and element

resistant, and is designed specifically to accommodate the battery-elec-

tric drive technology;

The proprietary TerraVolt™ Energy Storage System can be charged in

under 10 minutes. The cells are packaged in proprietary 23 volt modules

along with a proprietary battery management system (8 modules per box)

in a package that fits neatly within the composite floor structure. This

helps maintain a lower center of gravity and even weight distribution;

The ProDrive system is powered by a single UQM PowerPhase® 150

permanent magnet (PM) motor with custom engineering for Proterra. It’s

rated at 150 kW peak (100 kW continuous) power and generates 650 Nm

of torque. The drive motor is coupled to a newly designed Borg Warner

three-speed eGearDrive™ transmission, designed to meet requirements

of Proterra’s heavy-duty transit applications. The transmission allows the

traction motor to operate within the 92 to 95 percent efficiency range for

both driven and regenerative braking modes. While the EcoRide™ BE-35

is a pure battery electric bus, its design allows for the addition of auxiliary

power units (APU) for recharging the energy storage system where vehi-

cle routes or lack of electrical infrastructure does not make charging sta-

tions possible.

MVTA Board Awards Contract For Intelligent Transportation Systems Base Architecture To RouteMatch

The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority

(MVTA) Board of Directors awarded a contract

for Intelligent Transportation Systems Base

Architecture (also known as an automatic vehi-

cle locator – AVL – system).

“This is an exciting move for the MVTA,”

said Board Chair Willis E. Branning, who was a

member of the Board’s “Special AVL

Committee.”

He continued, “During the past two years, we

carefully researched systems that would best

meet the needs of the MVTA and we believe

RouteMatch will be an excellent long-term

technology partner with the MVTA.”

The committee reviewed the regional system

in place at Metro Transit and other area

providers, and then directed staff to seek other

options. The committee wanted to ensure that

the solution will not only meet current needs,

but will take advantage of future technologies

without a complete system replacement.

The objective of the AVL project is to

“improve the operational efficiency and per-

formance of the MVTA,” according to

Executive Director Beverley Miller. “These

desires can be summarized in two main goals:

1) Improve overall dispatching and operating

efficiency, and 2) Increase availability of transit

information and dissemination.”

RouteMatch Software, which currently

works with more than 350 transit agencies

nationwide, will be providing MVTA with inte-

grated, yet modular transportation software,

accompanying hardware, and traveler informa-

tion services. RouteMatch’s CAD/AVL solution

will serve as the base of MVTA’s system which

will help MVTA more effectively manage its

fixed routes and on time performance, and

locate its vehicles.

The contract also includes the purchase of

the Android-based Samsung Galaxy tablets

for 120 vehicles. These devices will help

MVTA bus drivers conduct in-vehicle naviga-

tion, real-time data collection and

route/schedule adherence.

“MVTA is a terrific example of a progressive

transit agency that values open, scalable solu-

tions to accommodate a large commuter rider-

ship between metro and suburban communi-

ties,” said Tim Quinn, executive vice president

and co-founder of RouteMatch Software.

“We’re thrilled that Minnesota Valley has cho-

sen RouteMatch’s technology and our team of

engineers, implementation consultants and cus-

tomer support specialists. We look forward to

partnering with MVTA to achieve its immediate

and long-term goals.”

The MVTA will take a phased approach to

the project and requires a scalable system with

a well-defined upgrade path to technologies

that support Automated Passenger Counting,

Automate Voice Annunciation, On Board

Dynamic Message Signs, and additional

Traveler Information Systems (TIS). The abili-

ty to share information with the regional system

is also an important component of the project.

The project is being funded by a variety of

sources including the MVTA’s 2010 National

Transit Database (NTD) fund allocation that

has been exchanged into Regional Transit

Capital (RTC) bond funds, and RTC funds from

MVTA’s 2011 NTD allocation.

Additional components will be added to the

system as funding is obtained.

MVTA is the public transportation provider

for residents and businesses of Apple Valley,

Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, and Savage.

Three investment companies have agreed to invest $150 million in

Clean Energy Fuels Corp., a leading North America provider of natu-

ral gas fuel for transportation. The investors are Springleaf

Investments Pte. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek

Holdings Pte. Ltd., Lionfish Investments Pte Ltd, an investment vehi-

cle managed by Seatown Holdings International Pte. Ltd, both based

in Singapore, and Greenwich Asset Holding Ltd, a wholly-owned sub-

sidiary of RRJ Capital Master Fund I, L.P.

"This investment by Temasek, Seatown and RRJ demonstrates their

confidence in the opportunity for fueling natural gas vehicles as well

as in Clean Energy's position as the leader in growing this market,"

said Andrew J. Littlefair, President and CEO of Clean Energy. "Our

development program for fueling station-building is expanding rapid-

ly and we welcome the support provided by the funds."

"We are steadily adding stations serving fleets in the refuse, transit,

airport, municipal and regional trucking markets around the country as

well as through our recently announced build-out of the backbone of

America's Natural Gas Highway for trucking," added Littlefair.

The $150-million investment is in the form of 7.50 percent convert-

ible notes due in 2016. The notes will be convertible into shares of

Clean Energy common stock at $15.00 per share. The closing of the

investment is scheduled to occur on or before August 30, 2011 and is

subject to customary conditions.

The use of proceeds is intended to support Clean Energy's fueling

infrastructure building program broadly, including the development,

construction and operation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and com-

pressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations and the related support,

management, maintenance and marketing of those stations, including

the development, construction and operation of offloading facilities,

related production assets and delivery trucks.

"We are honored to be a strategic partner of Clean Energy," said

Richard Ong, Chairman/CEO of RRJ Capital. "We like the long-term

prospects of the company. Clean Energy has been demonstrating a

strong track record in natural gas fueling services in North America. It

is well-positioned to tap into the future growth opportunities in both

the domestic market and in international markets such as China and

Southeast Asia."

Commenting on the announcement, Aubrey K. McClendon, CEO of

Chesapeake Energy Corporation, which recently invested $150 mil-

lion in Clean Energy to support the natural gas highway program, said,

"We are pleased to have introduced Clean Energy to our friends at

Temasek, Seatown and RRJ, and we see this

commitment by these major global investors

as being very beneficial to increasing the

demand for natural gas in North America and

also to keeping Clean Energy in the lead for

providing natural gas vehicle fueling and

deployment solutions in North America."

According to the company, currently

priced $1.50-$2.00 per gallon lower than

diesel or gasoline (depending upon local

markets), the use of natural gas fuel can

reduce costs for vehicle and fleet owners,

reduces greenhouse gas emissions up to 30

percent in light-duty vehicles and 23 percent

in medium to heavy-duty vehicles.

Additionally, natural gas is a secure North

American energy source with 98 percent of

the natural gas consumed produced in the

U.S. and Canada.

A Candies Coachworks Adds AnEighth Prevost H3-45

A Candies Coachworks, Inc. of Gainesville, FL, took possession of a

new Prevost 2011 H3-45 motorcoach in July. The new addition, which

joins seven other H3-45s in the A Candies fleet, will be used primarily for

charters. The new coach is equipped with three point seat belts, fire sup-

pression system and tire pressure monitoring system, in addition to all of

the other standard H3-45 model features.

Much of A Candies Coachworks’ business involves transporting sports

fans and school athletes, especially

the University of Florida “Gators”,

throughout the southeast United

States and beyond. The family-owned

company, which employs 18, has

seen demand for its services grow

steadily since its founding 25 years

ago. In fact, president and CEO

Sander Kaplan recalls that A Candies needed to buy its second coach only

three months after purchasing its first.

A Candies bought its first Prevost in 2006, Kaplan said. As for the new

H3-45, it has already elicited client comments. “People say ‘Wow, what

a nice bus,’” he noted. “The safety features on the 2011 were also huge

for us,” Kaplan added. “Safety is our number one priority and our clients

like knowing they’re on a coach equipped with the latest technology.” A

Candies also likes the H3-45’s “greenness,” which fits with the compa-

ny’s eco-friendly approach.

The company was named 2006 “Business of the Year” by the

Gainesville Chamber of Commerce, and 2008 Best Transportation

Company by LCT magazine.
