    Pennant & Bowling Update

Bowls Victoria have released a draft Tuesday and Saturday Pennant draw with play

scheduled to commence in early November.

Our view is that is highly unlikely restrictions will be sufficiently relaxed for this to occur.

We will continue to take advice from Bowls Vic and keep everyone up to date.

Selectors have advised that it is likely we will have 4 Saturday and 3 Tuesday sides

when pennant resumes. Our 4th Saturday side will play in Division 5 in stead of Division

6 due to some teams not resuming in the new season.

As we slowly reopen, we will look to having some structured social Bowls on Tuesday,

Thursday and Saturday with events to be confirmed. Practice on other days for those

    who wish to do so.

The Gala Day tournament has been postponed.

The Cup Day tournament has been cancelled. If we are open, we will run a Club event

    with details to be confirmed.

    Club Championships

Where possible will try and run Club events prior to the resumption of Pennant and

hopefully complete the outstanding ones from last season.

    IBC/EIBC Update

During August, the Ivanhoe Sports Precinct Plan community reference group consisting of Banyule Councilors' and Officer’s and representatives of the sporting groups from Ivanhoe Park, Chelsworth Park and John Street (Bowls and Tennis) met to review the latest options. This group has been meeting since May 2019.

The Council are looking to put in place a long term plan to upgrade the three sites.

From a Bowling perspective Option 1 has bowls at IBC and Option 2 bowls at EIBC. Our view is that bowls should be located at IBC. EIBC do not agree.

The next steps are for Council to undertake community consultation, decide on the preferred option, develop a masterplan with detailed staging and costings , conduct further community consultation and finally approve the masterplan. We have not been advised on timing, but I expect the process has at least 18 months to run.

This is a big project across a wide rang of sports including football, cricket, netball, croquet, tennis, athletics, and bowls. Expenditure will be in the range of $15 million. Aging clubhouses at all three sites will require redevelopment, access to bowling greens/tennis courts need upgrading and a raft of other improvements are being proposed.

Brayden Ellis will be running some skills and drills sessions during the season. When we reopen, we will provide dates for the skills training.

Brayden is also available for individual coaching. Please contact him via text on 0428 084 439 to arrange.

    Members Handbook & Team App

Ken Montgomery has had the difficult task of putting this together. Our plan is to publish the information that is static, for example committee’s information, policy’s, sponsors, Members contact details; etc, in the usual Members Handbook.

With Pennant, Yarra Region and Club event dates yet to be confirmed our plan is to publish these details on the Club web site and in the team app. Alan Willocks has spent countless hours preparing the systems to be up and running.

Sue Evans won her first club singles in just her second season of bowls and her first experience of playing singles. She defeated Laurel Montgomery in the final 25/20 after a tight battle. She got to the final with wins over Bronwyn Bannan 25/7 and Anne Greening 25/20

    Club Champions

    Men’s Singles

Cliff Lynch made it successive losses in singles finals after losing to David Daws last season. He progressed to this year’s final with wins over Adrian Ballinger 25/24, Phil Mithen 25/10, Eddie Hart 25/19 and John Angus 25/21

Brayden Ellis won his first men’s singles in his first year at the club. He made his way to the final with wins over Rob Waddell 25/9, Alby Clark 25/3, Stan Blight 25/22 and Alan Willocks in the semi-final 25/20 before facing Cliff Lynch in the final.

He had an excellent start, racing to a 16/5 lead before Cliff started to get a few near the jack. At 21/20 either player could win it and that player turned out to be Brayden, scrambling over the line 25/21

    Women’s Singles

Laurel had good wins over Pam McColl 25/2 and Alene McCarthy 25/20 on her way to the final. If she’d been playing Sue McEvans in the final the result may have been different.

Ivanhoe’s premier couple, Ken and Laurel Montgomery, broke through for their first mixed pairs title after being runners-up in the previous two seasons. A first round bye followed by wins over Warrick Carbis and Alene McCarthy 18/14, then Jim Gay and Magdalena Lyczewska 21/11 and finally Cliff and Peggy Lynch 19/16 was how they triumphed.

    Club Champions (cont..)

    Minor Singles

Arthur had a charmed run with walkovers in the first and second rounds. Despite the lack of match practice he was able to beat Pam McColl 21/11 in his first time on the green before struggling against Anne in the final

Anne Greening was another winner in her first year at the club in taking out the minor singles 21/8 over Arthur Bourtsos. After a first round bye she beat Joan Fry 21/16 then Bruce Trippett 21/19 in the semi-final.

(In the picture, Anne is the one on the left)

    Mixed Pairs

Cliff and Peggy Lynch share a surname but are unrelated: Cliff’s immediate ancestors are from around Warrnambool way then before that County Claire in Ireland; Peggy told me once where she was from but I’ve forgotten (although it definitely wasn’t Warrnambool). They reached the final with a first round bye then a win over Adrian Ballinger and Pam McColl 18/14 and John Higgins and Bronwyn Bannan, the winners in 2017/18.

Open Pairs / Open Triples / Handicap Singles

Coronavirus prevented playing of the finals of the open pairs between Max McGuire and Arthur Bourtsos vs Stan Blight and Brayden Ellis, the open triples Bronwyn Bannan, John Higgins and Cliff Lynch vs Laurel Montgomery, Ken Montgomery and Frank Whillans and the handicap singles between Paul Ryan and John Rose. These are expected to be played soon after we’re allowed back on the greens. At a recent meeting the board agreed any outstanding championship event not played before the first pennant match of the 2020/21 season will be voided.
