Lighthouse & Museum to Help LynxRepair Ship’s Boat Contributed by Beau Phillips

Boatworks volunteers at the St. AugustineLighthouse & Museum will be performing a familiartask on someone else’s boat during the next month orso as they fix the breasthook, refinish the brightwork, reseal some of the planking, and perform regular main-tenance on the Lynx’shistoric replica ship’sboat.

Today, the 16-foot-long work boat serves asa reminder of a timewhen ships’ boats wereessential aboard ships ofLynx’s ilk. The modernreplica of the 1812, Baltimore, Maryland ship Lynx, carries only one historic replica ship’s boat and, likeany boat, it requires regular maintenance and repairwork. Maintaining these homages to the age of sail isconsidered the ongoing work of historic preservation, which makes the boatbuilding volunteers at the St.Augustine Lighthouse & Museum uniquely qualified.

Since 2007, Boatworks volunteers for theLighthouse’s Archaeological Maritime Program(LAMP) have been giving museum guests a glimpseinto heritage boatbuilding as they build historically

accurate small craft on site, steps from the tower door. Museum volunteers are currently building a recre-

ation of an 18th century yawl destined to serve aboarda replica of the Galveztown, Bernardo de Glavez’sflagship, that is very similar to the boat Lynx hasasked Boatworks to help repair.

Bathroom Exasperation As the lone female in our house, I find that certain

male habits have really begun to get on my nerves. One day, I emerged from the bathroom completelyexasperated when I bumped into my husband.

“What is it with guys that they won’t replace thetoilet paper?!” I raged.

“I know,” he said, nodding in agreement. “I noticedthat when I was in there earlier.”

Meet Our PiratesOly Mackerel was born in Aberdeen Scotland, dur-

ing the summer of 1666. He turned pirate only after anincompetent captain pushed him to anew career. Circumstances made thedecision for him when his formeremployer nearly killed the whole crew, and almost completely destroyed theship. After marooning the captain,Oly and the remaining crew memberstook boarding on the first ship theyfound.

Oly prefers cannons over daggers, but will use whatever he needs to winthe fight. His territory of preference is the AtlanticOcean, specifically the Caribbean. The Warm weatherand woman both agree with him. He is quick with atail, and sure in a fight. Oly loves the teal blue ocean, and is a valued member of the Black Raven Crew.

New House A family had spent the day moving from their farm-

house into a brand new house in a development near-by. Very early the next morning, their 6 year-old sonran in to the parent’s bedroom to wake them up.

The mother dressed him and told him to play in theyard. About 20 minutes later, he came running back.

“Mommy, Mommy,” he exclaimed, “Every househas a doorbell - and they all work!”

Antiques The owner of a priceless antiques collection

allowed a museum to exhibit his treasures. The moverspacked the vases while the collector hovered overthem. “Do be careful,” he cautioned one burly mover.“That vase is nearly two thousand years old.”

“Don’t worry,” the guy replied. “I’ll treat it like itwas brand new.”

New Perfume After years of using the same perfumes, I decided to try something different and settled on a light, citrusy

fragrance. The next day I was surprised when it was my little boy, not my husband, who first noticed thechange. As he put his arms around me, he declared, “Wow, Mom, you smell just like Froot Loops!”
