Gin Willis,Chairperson
2010 Duluth Fall FestivalWelcome to our 28th Annu-
al Duluth Fall Festival! We areexpecting the biggest and bestFestival ever. New this year is afull carnival opening onWednesday, September 22ndand running through Sunday ofthe Festival. The carnival will belocated on Main Street acrossfrom Duluth City Hall. Every-one can enjoy amusement parkrides and games.
Saturday, the Festival opensat 9:00 a.m. The parade beginsat 10:00 a.m., led by Grand Mar-shal Brooks Coleman. We areextremely honored to have StateRepresentative Coleman leadthe Parade, as he is a long-timevolunteer with the Festival. There will be drill teams, cheer-leaders, sports teams, dancetroupes, scout groups, antiquecars, clowns, musicians andmuch more.
Following the parade, joinus for the Opening Ceremony atthe Duluth Festival Center in theheart of the Festival grounds.Mr.Coleman,will be honored, aswell as our Mayor, City Council, soldiers from Fort Benning andour generous sponsors.
Sunday starts earlier, at 8a.m., with a 5K Road Race, fol-lowed by an outdoor worshipservice at the Duluth FestivalCenter. Entertainment and funwill run until 5:00 p.m.
The Festival, itself, featuresalmost 400 vendors fromthroughout the southeast fea-turing hand made, original finearts and crafts such as jewelry, paintings, hand carved clocks, purses, clothing, baskets, can-dles, pottery, floral arrange-ments, quilts, furniture, wood-en toys, gourmet food and
much, much more. For the firsttime, we will have hand-blownglass being created onsite.
Also new this year is “Man’sCorner” that will host severalactivities and products gearedtowards the men who tag alongto please their significant oth-ers. At Man’s Corner you willfind a putting green, a profes-sional fishing guide, cars, trac-tors, lawn mowers, and so on.Don’t worry about missing thatimportant football game, asthere will be flat-screen TVs sothat you can tune in.
As always, we have a vari-ety of entertainment, includingmusic, dancing, singing andacrobatics running continu-ously on three separate stages. We hope you plan on spendingthe whole weekend with us.Youwon't want to miss it!
Beautification of DuluthThe proceeds from the Fes-tival are used towards thebeautification and improve-ment of historic downtownDuluth. Money generatedfrom the Festival has beenused for numerous specialprojects, including purchas-ing and developing TaylorPark (including the archedentryway), bricking theFestival Center Courtyard, increasing the size of thepublic restrooms, purchas-ing planters, landscapingthe streets of Duluth, light-ing the historic area, andmany others.
By far, the largest Festi-val undertaking was build-ing the Duluth FestivalCenter Amphitheatre onthe Town Green. TheDuluth Festival Center hasspurred complementarydevelopment by the City, such as the fountain, the
brick walkways and curv-ing walls on the TownGreen, lantern posts, land-scaping, the children’splayground, and, mostnotably, a new City Hall.
Community FellowshipAlthough the annual Fes-
tival is the organization’sbiggest claim to fame, devel-oping relationships and fel-lowship is another impor-tant undertaking. In a worldwhere many people don’tknow their own neighborand seek community roots,we are proud to offer anopportunity for people todevelop life–long friend-ships and make communityconnections to gain a feelingof being a part of somethingbigger than ourselves.
To promote these bud-ding friendships, the Festi-val sponsors many Duluth-based events during theyear, including: monthlymeetings, downtown workdays, an annual communityluncheon (for sponsors, vol-unteers, city workers, andfirst responders), the Siz-zlin’ Summer Picnic (anold-fashioned potluck din-ner), the Taste of Duluth, the Duluth Christmas TreeLighting (followed by a spe-cial Christmas party forDuluth Fall Festival volun-teers), and, the Duluth NewYear’s Eve celebration.
In addition, the Festivalconcert is held Saturday nighttwo weeks before the Festival.Having the Concert before theFestival enables us to promotethe upcoming Festival, havemore room for concert–goers, and invite bigger–namebands. This year, Rupert’sOrchestra, famous throughout
the southeast performed, along with opening act,Kozmic Mama.
History of the FestivalThe Duluth Fall Festival
is celebrating its 28thanniversary this year. How-ever, the real beginning datesback almost fifty years to1962 and a five-week cele-bration of the history of thetown. Then, in 1976, a springfestival was held to celebratethe centennial of Duluth’scharter. These two festivalswere the forerunners oftoday’s Duluth Fall Festival. In late October 1983, the firstannual Duluth Fall Festivalwas organized by a handfulof citizens (a few of whomare still involved with theFestival today). The weatherwas cold and rainy and prof-its were small; however, theenthusiasm persisted, andthe decision was made tohold it annually. In 1984, the Festival date waschanged in 1984 to the lastweekend in September, inhopes of better weather.
Many other additions to theFestival occurred that year:the first Festival tabloid waspublished that year by theGwinnett Daily News, henumber of committees dou-bled from three to six, thefirst entertainment stage wasbuilt, and the first Road Racewas held.
Through the years, theFestival has continued togrow and change. In 1985,the first official T-shirts weredonated by Tom Martin ofCitizen’s Bank. By 1987, thenumber of committees hadgrown to 19 ( including theso-necessary Cleanup com-mittee). The first “MissDuluth” pageant was heldthat year, and a picnic areawas designated.1988 broughtthe first Silent Auction, alongwith the threat of HurricaneHugo. In 1993, a concertreplaced the traditionalStreet Dance. By 1996, thenumber of committees hadgrown to 36, and the numberof booths to about 250. It wasa banner year in other ways, too, with the purchase of TaylorPark and the addition of the all-important Sponsor program.
Unfortunately, though 1996was almost a total rainout. For that reason, in 1997, theFestival was changed to atwo-day event, to salvage atleast one day in case of rain.Coincidentally, that is exactlywhat happened that year.
Now, twenty-seven yearsafter the first annual event, the Duluth Fall Festival isone of the most successfulfestivals in the southeast.Since 1983, the size ofthe Festival has grownimmensely. The number ofseparate committees hasgone from 3 to 45, the num-ber of volunteers has grownfrom 25 to more than 300,the number of Arts & Craftsand Food booths numberalmost 400, and the crowdshave increased, too.
If you are interested in vol-unteering with the Festival, wewould love to have you.

Despite being inducted into the National Fresh-water Hall of Fame as a Legendary Fishing Guide, traveling the globe while winning hundreds of awardsfor both my writing and photography, and winning aracing championship in sports cars, I have missed thepersonal contact with the local community. Thanks toan exciting series of events and the addition of the allnew “Man’s Corner” for those of us who live an activelifestyle, I’m back at the Duluth Fall Festival this yearto meet and greet both newcomers and those in theDuluth community who have been to my fishing class-es, fished with me, or who have followed my writingin newspapers and magazines over the years. I’ll beavailable to answer questions, and selling books,Swirleybird Lures, fishing jewelry, and prints of someof my award-winning photos. It will certainly be anexciting reunion for all of us!

Join us as we “WelcomeHome” Fort Benning’s 1st Bat-talion, 15th Infantry Regiment“CAN DO” soldiers who are justreturning from their fourthdeployment to Iraq. On Sat. at10 a.m., Rear DetachmentCommander, CPT AndrewLerch, will lead the 1-15 troopsthrough the streets of down-town Duluth. Come early to getyour spot. Watch for our Festi-val volunteers to hand out flagsalong the parade route. Wavethem high and cheer these sol-diers as they pass you by.
Be sure to attend the Open-ing Ceremony at 11:30 where the1-15 troops will be recognizedfor their service to our country.Witness the surprise of a soldier
meeting his adoptive familyface-to-face for the first time!Afterwards, stop by the Hugs forOur Soldiers’ booth on the TownGreen to meet & shake the hands
of these American Heroes. Tryon their Kevlar to experience theweight of their body armor.Learn how you can help welcomeother soldiers home.
Regretfully, LTC Ken Har-vey, Commander of the 1-15Infantry, is unable to be at theFestival because he’s still inIraq, but standing in his place is
his family: wife, Janice, andchildren, Kait, Jake, Zach &Emily. When asked,“What doesDuluth Fall Festival mean toyour family and you,” Mrs. Har-vey stated, “The Festival hasbecome a tradition in our fami-ly. We feel like we’re at ‘home’from the moment we arrive. The citizens always extend sucha warm welcome, and it’s heart-warming to see them embrac-ing the soldiers and thankingthem for their service. Ourchildren refer to Duluth as ‘thetown just north of Atlantawhere they love the military’.This Fall Festival will be bitter-sweet for us as it will be the lastone our family will attend withthe 1-15. But as we move to ournext job with the Army, I knowthe legacy of what the DuluthFall Festival and Hugs for Our
Soldiers provides to our troopswill continue on.”
Thanks to the efforts ofHugs for Our Soldiers, a Ten-nessee-based organizationoriginally founded in Duluth byKathy Orcutt, and throughdonations by Russ & MelanieSheldon and numerous Duluthbusinesses, these soldiers willreceive breakfast sandwichesfrom Burger King to welcomethem to Duluth, a complimen-tary lunch from Boudreaux’s,free hotel stay, dinner at Dave &Buster’s and attend a concert atWild Bill’s. Thank you, Duluth, for helping the Festival roll outthe red carpet for our militaryand for being the patriotic com-munity that you are!!
