Evolving Voice/Video Over IP Protocols

• H.323 ITU standard protocol for interactive conferencing

Evolved from H.320 ISDN standard

Flexible, complex

• SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) IETF protocol, near draft standard, for interactive and non-

interactive conferencing

Simpler but less mature than H.323

• MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol) Emerging for PSTN gateway control, thin device control

• RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) IETF standard media streaming protocol

Where is the Market Today?

Protocols:

• H.323 maturing scalable, reliable, mostly positioned in backbone

approximately 90% of VoIP ports and growing video ports

• SIP in late experimental stage driven by promise of enhanced services

potential positioning in backbone and access

• MGCP introduced at edge “standard” protocol between softswitch and endpoint

No clear protocol “winner”future networks will be multi-protocol
