Climate Research Farms: The Purpose
• Improving our predictive models by filling key data
gaps
– Example: In order to understand crop response to various
N rates, must understand soil capabilities and crop response
to no N as a baseline
• Ground-truthing
– Example: Running soil tests
to check the accuracy of our
Nitrogen Advisor that provides
farmers insights about
available N in their soil

Nitrogen is challenging to manage due to complex interactions between
management practices, weather and field properties
Science Behind Nitrogen Advisor: Understanding
the Challenge
• Each arrow represents a
biogeochemical process
• Each process is modeled as a (set
of) equations that depend upon soil
temperature, soil moisture, water
flow, and depth among other factors
• Surprisingly complex dynamics
Science Behind Nitrogen Advisor: 2015 Findings
©2015 The Climate Corporation All Rights Reserved36
Field testing with more than 30,000 samples (soil, tissue and residue) taken
through the season found that:
Limited Availability Expensive Time Sensitive Slow Results
Nearly 80% of the time, Nitrogen Advisor would have guided a farmer
to the same decision as a PSNT on whether or not to
apply additional nitrogen
PSNT (Pre-Sidedress Nitrate Test) is the industry’s gold standard for making in-season
nitrogen application decisions. However, this tool is used by few farmers because:
