CONDITION: Given classroom instruction.
STANDARD: In accordance with (IAW) 29 CFR 1910.147 The Control of Hazardous Energy.

Applies to the control of energy during servicing and/or maintenance of machines and equipment.

Conditions Requiring Lockout/Tagout Procedures
Unexpected energizing or start-up of machinery or equipment.
Potential release of hazardous energy.
Confined spaces or adjacent areas.

Lockout/Tagout
Modifications of machinery after January 2, 1990.

Terminology
Authorized Employee - A person who implements lockout/tagout procedures.
Affected Employee - An employee who operates or uses equipment and machinery.

Terminology
Energy isolating device - A device which prevents the transmission or release of energy.
Energy source - Any source of electrical mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal or other energy source.

Terminology
Lockout The placement of a lockout device on an
energy isolating device.
Lockout device A device used to hold an energy
isolating device in a safe position.

Tagout The placement of a tagout device on an
energy isolating device.
Tagout device A prominent warning device, such as a
tag.

Lockout/Tagout
If energy isolating devices are unable to be locked out, a tagout device must be utilized.
If energy isolating devices are capable of being locked out, a lockout device must be used.

Identify the type and magnitude of energy.
Identify the hazards of the energy to be controlled.
Identify the methods or means to control the energy.

Utilize applicable operator manuals.
Follow standard operating procedure (SOP).

Machine or Equipment Isolation
Physically locate energy isolating devices.
Position energy isolating devices to the “off” or “closed’ position.

Applying Lockout/Tagout Devices
Applied by the authorized employee. Lockout devices affixed to hold
energy isolating device in the “safe” or “off” position.
Tagout devices shall clearly indicate the prohibited use of the energy isolating device(s).

Prior to operation of machinery or equipment.
Verify that the equipment will not start and/or operate.

Inspect work area.
Remove nonessential items.
Ensure equipment/machine components are operationally intact.

Removed by the authorized employee who applied the device(s).
Direction of the employer.

Testing or positioning of machinery and equipment.
