We Made It! through Hurricane Sandy. The campus had been hit with so many natural disasters over the past two years that it is with much happiness to report the campus went virtually unscathed.

We should keep in mind that many did not fare so well in New York and New Jersey let’s keep them in our prayers and help where we can.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGEMy Brother Knights,Merry Christmas! The new liturgical year starts on December 2 which is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a

time of waiting in anticipation of the birth of Jesus on Christmas day. The Christmas season is one which can be filled with other concerns as well. These are not bad in and of themselves. Indeed we should look forward to spending time with family and friends, office get-togethers and perhaps even a trip. It is important, though, to remember “the reason for the season” and to prepare for the arrival of the child of Bethlehem with just as much energy and vigor as we do our other activities.

I would like to thank Thom and Marijo Galvin, along with their army of volunteers for a suc-cessful Thanksgiving Day charity event here at EDW. This year marked the 28th time our council has sponsored this event and it gets better each year.

I would also like to thank all of you, my brother knights and your family members as well for being members of our EDW community. Your dedication to the lessons of our order helps EDW to continue to thrive and prosper. May God Bless you and your families this Christmas season and always.

Vivat Jesus! Pray the rosary.SincerelyStephen J. McTeagueGrand Knight

FAMILY OF THE MONTH Our December Family of the Month has been recognized in this space before but I feel it is ap-propriate to recognize them again as a show of appreciation for the work they do on behalf of our council and club. Ladies U-Knighted (LUK) supports our council in a number of ways, both around the grounds and in our charitable outreach. LUK sells baked goods at the various summertime BBQs to raise funds for their activities. They have donated money and time to aid in the upkeep of the Council Home. They decorate and run the adults Halloween party held in the Council Home. They spearhead the effort to put up and decorate the council home’s Christmas tree. LUK sponsors a tea each year and donate funds received to Elizabeth House. Elsewhere in this edition of KL you will read a letter received from a service man who received two care package put together in a joint effort by LUK, EDW and the Columbus Club. Please join me in congratulating and thanking the Ladies U-Knighted for all they do for the council and club. LUK is always ready to welcome new members. They meet the first Thursday of each month in the council home at 7:30.

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWSJo Balsamo Wood

Greetings! Halloween and Thanksgiving are over, and Christmas is right around the corner! Time sure flies when you are having fun. That’s what we like to do here at LUK – have fun!!!

Speaking of fun . . . I hope you found time to stop by the Ninth Annual Halloween Party. The Old Council Home was decorated spectacularly and the costumes, as always, were fantastic. Everyone had a blast mingling with old friends, checking out costumes, and dancing to the fantastic music of the Benefactors. At midnight, an esteemed panel of judges selected the winners of the Annual costume contest. Winning costumes included the following: Cheeseburger and Hamburgler, Three Musketeers and Lady de Winter, Fifty Shades of Grey, Obama/Romney, Indiana Jones, (Please check out the photo of the winners in this issue of the Knight Life.)

I want to thank everyone that helped to make this party a success by decorating, setting up, cooking food, bartending, dressing up, and cleaning up. Special thanks to the Peter Silano, the Columbus Club manager for organizing the movement of decorations and wall hangings and donating food and prizes, Steve McTeague, Bob Dannemiller, John Thompson, Kenny Goss, John O’Neill and all of the Knights that came out to help decorate and clean up. As I always say, many hands make light work. We, once again, proved that LUK, the EDW K of C, and the Columbus Club make a great team.

Save the Date! LUK is having their annual Christmas Tree Decorating event on Saturday, November 24 beginning at 7:00 p.m. As always, we are having a “pot luck” get together to kick off the Christmas season. This is a family event, so please bring your children to help with the decorations. Please bring a Christmas ornament to spruce up the tree and snacks to share. If anyone is looking to downsize your old decorations and is trying to find a new home for them, please contact Meredith Dittmar, LUK’s Publicity Officer @ [email protected]. Her creative talents will make your old decorations look elegant in the Old Council Home.

LUK is having its annual Christmas party meeting on Thursday, December 6. All LUK members (past and present), friends of LUK, and potential new members are welcome to attend. Everyone who wants to participate in the Christmas gift exchange is asked to bring a wrapped gift worth $20. Please bring a snack (hors d’ouvre or dessert) to share. This is a great meeting for potential members to attend.

Please join Ladies U-Knighted in wishing a very happy birthday to me, your LUK Vice President, Jo Wood (Dec 24). On behalf of Ladies U-Knighted, Merry Christmas to all!

LADIES U-KNIGHTED, EDW AND THE COLUMBUS CLUB TEAM UP

TO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS Recently members of LUK, the council and the Columbus Club gathered items to send along to our troops stationed in Afghanistan. The items collected filled two care packages. The packages found their way to LCDR Andrew Kotila who sent back a thank you note to Jo Balsamo Wood, Vice President of LUK. LCDR Kotila’s note is below. I understand the idea for the 40 cigars Andrew mentions was from Steve Libera. Great idea, Steve!Dear Jo, Many thanks to you and the ladies for the not 1... but 2 large boxes! They just arrived yesterday and I’ve shared with my team. Everyone was excited to receive them. I’ve noted that we’ll have to gather quite a few folks to go through the 40 cigars included! That was certainly a nice touch, and everything was appreciated all around. I really appreciate not being forgotten over here as I get toward the end with about 6 weeks left, then it will be on to the holidays in WI with Brodi and family. Please say hello to the team for me, and I hope all is well!

Best regards, Andrew

FROM THE WWII VETS THAT ENJOYED OUR FACILITY FOR DINNER ON

OCTOBER 18TH AND 19TH 2012

Dear KOC and Club,You did it again! Thank you very much for your help with our

recent WWII Vets trip. They were blown away by all the wonderful things that happened and you were a key part of the event!

I absolutely loved the relaxed dinner in the Council Home one night followed by taps and then the dinner with the entertainment the next night. My favorite part was the young kids that were clogging that then hung around and thanked the veterans as they were leaving. Very touching and very impressive!

Please convey our appreciation to all the people that helped. The cloggers, the swing dancers, the band, the servers, the bugler, etc. were all great. The veterans were stunned by the whole thing. By the time we got to Shreveport, La. and they walked through the Cordon of Swords from the Airmen at Barksdale Air Force Base many were in tears.

In the words of veteran Willis Andrews, “Couldn’t have been better!”

On a side note, as I drove one veteran home Saturday night he expressed how much he enjoyed the event at the Knights of Columbus. He added, “I think they got a blessing for that!” I hope that’s true and all those who helped feel that way. The whole trip was a blessing for us!

Thanks again! Hope to see everyone in the spring! Sam Anderson, Coordinator - Honor Flight – Tyler Texas and

North Louisiana, - Brookshires.com (Sponsor)

NARRATIVE FOR THE PROPOSED 2013 BUDGET

FOR THE COLUMBUS CLUB OF ARLINGTON INC.

Dave Paduda Treasurer and Owen J. Beirne Jr. PresidentEnclosed in this December Knight Life is the Columbus Club,

Inc., proposed 2013 Budget for the review of Council members pursuant to the By-Laws, Article V, Section 7. This budget will be presented at the annual meeting of the Corporation, which will be held on January 3rd, 2013 for membership approval. The following table presents a 3 -year portrait of corporate income and expense compared with our proposed 2013 budget to give you as members our financial history.

This past year has been one where we emphasized repairing and reinvesting in the campus facilities. Financially, we also have not been immune inflation in the cost of food - about a 22% increase in food cost! In 2012 we have experienced continued revenue growth from the pool and camps and from income from food and beverage sales

In 2013 we have adopted a conservative approach to budget-ing. The 2013 Budget is based on our projection of income and expenses for 2012. Total income from all sources is budgeted at $1,767,000 compared with projected costs of 1,295,400.

Cost of Sales for 2013 is projected at $363,000. There are slight increases budgeted for real estate taxes, employee benefits and several other expense items. The 2nd table breaks down some of the expenses that we incur on a day-to-day basis that are aggregated under “other”. The 3rd table “Real Estate, Payroll Taxes, and Insurance Explained” portrays the cost / budget of four major overhead expense areas.

After the projected income of $108,600, you see the principle payment of $45,038 repaying the outstanding loan. In December 2011, we were able to get a substantial rate modification in our loan from our own member and banker John Brough at Chain Bridge Bank which the loan was currently with!

As of 12-01-2011 the outstanding loan balance was $232,854, as of 12-31-2012 it will be reduced to $190,046. This loan is scheduled to be paid off on 11-01-2016. Of the remaining income, the Columbus Club Board has placed the parking lot revenue of $48,000 in a reserve account.
