Expanded Cinema Summer — Call for Applications Deadline: April 4, 11:59pm

AFCOOP is accepting applications for Expanded Cinema Summer, a brand new production residency for

emerging filmmakers and artists.

Expanded cinema combines approaches from experimental film, sculpture, architecture, performance art,

installation and various other disciplines, widening the potential experiences of the moving image and exploring

forms of presentation outside of the traditional theatre space.

Five participants selected by a peer jury will be be given the unique opportunity to:

• study the field of expanded cinema

• receive hands-on analog film training

• participate in a cross-disciplinary "Architecture and Image" workshop led by Passage Studios

• attend artist talks & workshops by visiting artists Alexandre Larose and Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof

• receive funding to create their own expanded cinema work presented at Nocturne 2016



Expanded Cinema Summer is open to emerging (early career, modest body of work) artists of all disciplines

Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival — Call for Submissions The Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival (HIFF) is pleased to announce the 2016 Call for Short Film

Submissons. For the first time, HIFF will accept short film entries from outside of Atlantic Canada. Filmmakers

with short films from across Canada and around the world are invited to submit before April 1st, 2016. The

2016 Festival will be held June 9th-12th 2016.

Now entering its 10th year, HIFF showcases films that challenge convention in subject and in form. Short

filmmakers who are accepted into HIFF 2016 will benefit by having their work seen by visiting programmers

from top Canadian and International film festivals. In 2015 HIFF hosted visiting programmers from Festival du

nouveau cinema, Vancouver International Film Festival, South By Southwest, and Edinburgh International Film

Canon C300 Mark II

AFCOOP will soon be offering the brand new Canon C300 Mark II PL camera! This 4K iteration of the popular

C300 workhorse camera will offer shooters an incredible 15 stops of dynamic range to work with. Featuring an

improved Canon Log2 color science inside of the rugged and proven body design of the C300 platform, this

New Mac Pro in Media Suite

Sticking with the theme of cutting edge 4K video production, AFCOOP has acquired a brand new Mac Pro for 4K

RAW video editing and mastering. The Media Suite features the full Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, After

Effects, Photoshop, Audition, Media Encoder and more), as well as Davinci Resolve Lite for grading and

finishing. The Mac Pro offers Thunderbolt and USB 3 connectivity with rapid-fire data transfer rates and

incredible playback performance.

2. WORKSHOPS

FILM 5 Trainee Program

Interested in working on a film crew this spring? It's not too late! The FILM 5 Trainee program offers aspiring

technical crew high-quality classroom training, practical on-set instruction, and networking

opportunities. Workshops are already underway, so make sure you don't miss out on the ones you're interested

in.



To become a trainee crew member, you must take the required workshops for your desired position, pay the

$60 application fee (which also covers the mandatory Set Etiquette Course), come to the Trainee/Team Meet

and Greet on March 22, and submit a resume and application form. You can read the full details about the

We have a full schedule of workshops in March, so check your calendars and sign up for the ones you're

interested in. While some of the workshops have already happened, it's still possible to join the trainee program

in one of the following roles: Assistant Director, Sound Department, Art

Department, Grip/Electric, Assistant Editor, and DMT Trainee.

Scriptwriters' Circle: Bring Your Own Film

The monthly Scriptwriters' Circle is now ALSO a BYOF (Bring Your Own Film) night. If you have a short film

you've made, or are working on, or are planning to work on, and you'd like to show it, or bits of it, or even just

talk about it, this is the place for you. Get feedback and suggestions on any aspect of filmmaking.

Also, if any experienced filmmakers would like to volunteer to come in and show their work for a Q&A, contact

Women in Film and Television Atlantic's annual Women Making Waves conference is coming up this weekend!

It's happening in Halifax, March 3-6.

Women Making Waves puts the confer in conference, the wise in wisdom, and the expert in experience. Join us

in Halifax, NS and catch the ‘wave.’ Whether you’re a salty vet, an emerging auteur, or a student discovering

your love of the art, there will be something at the conference that excites, illuminates, provokes or inspires

you.

The schedule includes screenings, panel discussions, and master classes. AFCOOP is presenting two

screenings:

He Hated Pigeons

Thursday, March 3 8pm | The Company House | $10

The fifth feature by Ingrid Veninger is slow-burning odyssey about love and loss featuring newcomer Pedro

Fontaine. Shot in Chile, and linked with the uncertainty of protagonist's journey, every screening is presented

with a uniquely improvised, ever-changing live score. In Halifax, the movie will be screened at local community

hub, The Company House, and will be accompanied by Jazz Pianist Holly Arsenault.

Inspire/Innovate: A Showcase of Low-Budget Films Directed by Women

Friday, March 4 8pm | Lord Nelson Ballroom | $10

In filmmaking it is not uncommon to associate a low-budget with low quality. However, with new methods of

funding and easier access to the tools of production, it is becoming increasingly evident that this view needs

updating. This showcase includes some of the most innovative and inspiring low-budget films from Atlantic

Canada and around the World, with films from Jasmin Mazaffari, Tara Wells, Frances Bodono, Jillian Acreman,

Jenna MacMillan, Joanne Mony Park, Brittany Amos, and Julia Steibert.

Carbon Arc Cinema Winter Screenings

Carbon Arc Cinema winter film series is underway, with screenings happening at the Museum of Natural History

in Halifax.



March 4, 7pm and 9pm Mustang

Five Turkish sisters are essentially imprisoned in their home, subjected to endless lessons in housework in

preparation for becoming brides. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid

the same fate. The fierce love between them empowers them to rebel and chase a future where they can

determine their own lives. This is Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut feature, a powerful portrait of female

empowerment.

March 5, 7pm Theeb

In 1916, a Bedouin boy named Theeb lives with his tribe in a remote part of the Ottoman Empire as the First

World War rages on. When his older brother has to escort a British officer across the desert, Theeb tags along

for the adventure. Theeb has been described as both a coming-of-age story and an Arabic western.

Curated by Ron Foley MacDonald, this is the second season of Film Noir films, with a collection of film from

England, France, and Japan, with a concentration on films by American directors who were ultimately

blacklisted in Hollywood.

March 16 - Stray Dog

Akira Kurosawa, Japan, 1949, 122 minutes. An impossibly young Toshirô Mifune plays a detective in post-war

Tokyo who must recover his own stolen gun in this extraordinary example of how Film Noir became a truly

international style.

March 23 - The Third Man

Carol Reed, UK/Austria, 1949, 104 minutes. Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton star in this luminous Graham

Greene adaptation that explores the black market in a divided, post WWII Vienna where morality has drifted

very far from its pre-war settings.

March 30 – The Underworld Story

Cy Endfield, USA, 1950, 91 minutes. A small town newspaper gets into the big time when renegade reporter

Dan Duryea sniffs out a scandal in this ferocious critique of the media by soon-to-be-blacklisted director Cy

Endfield (Zulu, The Mysterious Island).

Opening — Archives of the Future

CFAT's exhibit Archives of the Future will be opening on March 10th at Dalhousie University Art Gallery as a

part of the larger exhibition Why are we saving All these artist publications + Other Galleries stuffs? This



screening explores how the cultural workforce is in constant competition with itself by unwittingly contributing

to the global power structures that underpay, overwork and exploit. To resist this exploitation, artists and art

institutions must cast a critical eye on the conditions of its own production and display, its own labor.

Archives of the Future features work by: Dawn George, Katie Vida, Zachary Gough, Dana Claxton and Sharlene

Bamboat.

4. AWARDS, GRANTS, RESIDENCIES & CONTESTS

Call for Applications — CFAT's Local Artist in Residence

Twice a year, CFAT’s Local Artist-In-Residence Program provides an opportunity for a single established local

media artist to develop a new work involving audio, video, or new media. In exchange, the LAIR is expected to

present their work, teach workshops, and meet with the local community. The successful applicant will receive

over $1000 of in-kind support in the form of Production and Editing memberships, access to facilities and

equipment, a $1700 artist fee, a $300 speaker fee for conducting a talk or workshop for the community about

their project, and access to technical assistance during the residency. Past LAIRs include D’Arcy Wilson, Lisa

Lipton, Krista Davis, Will Robinson, Khanhthan Tran, Melanie Colosimo, Eryn Foster, Sym Corrigan and Léola

Leblanc.

CBC's Short Film Face Off

The Short Film Face Off is returning for its ninth season on CBC TV. The studio panel will pick three finalists and

the TV audience will vote on the top film. CBC and their sponsors will offer a prize made up of cash and services

to be used by the winning director for his or her next short film. That film will be licensed for broadcast by the

CBC.

PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp

The 10th annual PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp will run for five intensive days from May 20 - 25, 2016 with the

best mentors available who specialize in training for the screen-based entertainment industry. These dates

include a weekend, which means less time away from your day job.

Call for Applications — Studio Black! Shadow Director

Studio Black! is seeking applications from emerging Nova Scotian directors to serve as a shadow director on the

set of Season 2, for five days in April or May. This is an opportunity to observe and learn from the show's



directors. Preference will be given to applicants from African Nova Scotian backgrounds. Selected candidates

will receive honorariums.

CFAT Media Arts Scholarship

The CFAT Media Arts Scholarship program is a rigorous six-month education and mentorship opportunity for 10

people who propose to make a media art project. Selected applicants are required to make a media art piece in

a medium in which they have little to no previous experience. Scholars are responsible for learning the skills

required for completing their piece by the deadline set by CFAT. The Media Art Scholarship Program is open to

any member of the public who is not currently attending a similar program. You do not need to be an artist to

apply, but you do need to have a clear vision/concept for your art project.

Applications for CFC Features Now Open

Looking for a unique opportunity to advance your feature script and produce your film? Apply to CFC Features!

The program has launched the careers of more than 100 CFC alumni including Clement Virgo, Vincenzo Natali

and Jeff Barnaby (RUDE, CUBE and RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS, respectively). The deadline to apply is March

31, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Apply Now for NSI New Voices

NSI New Voices is a full-time, 14 week, culturally-sensitive course for Aboriginal adults aged 18-35 providing

training and exposure to employment opportunities in film, TV and digital media. Workshops and seminars in

the classroom phase are led by industry experts. Students will intern with a broadcaster or independent

production company giving them firsthand knowledge of the business. Training also includes the production and

screening of three short films. Minimum wage is provided throughout the course.

Call for Submissions — 4th Wall: Justice, Art & Youth

Nova Scotian youth are invited to apply to 4th Wall: Justice, Art & Youth. The project invites young people aged

15-30 to create a high profile exhibition at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. It will address justice from the

vantage point of the legacy of the Indian Residential Schools, the overrepresentation of Indigenous and African



Canadian youth in the criminal justice system, intimate partner violence, and bullying of LGBTQ youth.

Organizers invite youth and groups of young artists to submit proposals for artwork. Up to ten submissions will

be selected by a jury to create artwork for the special exhibition. Each winning submission will receive $1,000

in addition to funds to cover artwork supplies. Applications are due on March 11, 2016. More information is

Nova Scotia Talent Trust - Application Deadlines for 2016 May 1

The Nova Scotia Talent Trust (NSTT) would like to remind all potential applicants that its deadline date for

Fall/Winter study is fast approaching. For the third year, the NSTT is pleased to announce that its scholarship

application process will happen online, thanks to the generous support of Norex.ca, a Halifax-based web design

and development firm and the Support4Culture Program in 2014.

The NSTT advises applicants to read the submission guidelines carefully and to submit their applications early

since there are a number of changes to submission procedures this year. The deadline for Fall/Winter study is

5:00 p.m. Atlantic Daylight Saving Time (ADT) on 1 May. All applications must be submitted by this date. For

Canada Council Grants to Individuals

The Canada Council for the Arts offers a variety of grants to individuals working in Media Arts. Several

deadlines are approaching, including Scriptwriting, Production, and Research/Creation Grants for film and video,

the Aboriginal Media Arts Program, and Research and Production Grants for New Media and Audio Artists. In

addition, travel grants for media arts professionals are available at any time.

Arts Nova Scotia Grants to Individuals Deadline: May 15

The program supports the creation of new works by professional artists in all disciplines including fine crafts,

literary, visual, media and performing arts. It also promotes a broad understanding and appreciation of art and

artists through professional development, creation and presentation of work. Individual artists may submit one

application per grant per deadline. To encourage equitable distribution of funds, artists can only receive one

Creation Grant in a 12-month period. Application forms and guidelines are available here.

5. FILM FESTIVAL DEADLINES

Smartphone Film Festival

The Smartphone Film Festival is an independent festival showcasing short movies made on smartphones by

Halifax professional, amateur and first-time filmmakers, app addicts and mobile device wizards. Selected films

will be shown at SPFF’s one-night screening party at the Halifax Central Library’s Paul O’Regan Hall on April 22,



where filmmakers and film lovers will watch the creations and cheer on the winners of SPFF awards (“the

Spiffies”) for the best movies.

NSI's Online Short Film Festival

NSI is accepting submissions for its Online Short Film Festival. The festival accepts films released from 2011

onward. The deadline is March 18, 2016.

Out East Film Festival: 2016 Call for Submissions

Submissions for the 2016 festival are currently open! To apply, complete the online entry form HERE.

Submissions may be fiction, documentary, animation or experimental of any length. We will accept films

dealing with queer subject matter as well as those made by queer filmmakers. Only films completed no more

than 18 months prior to the 2016 OUTeast Film Festival will be considered for admission. Preference will be

given to submissions that have not been distributed theatrically or broadcast on television in the Atlantic region

prior to the 2016 Festival.

Deadline for all submissions is April 1, 2016, 11:59 PM AST.

Atlantic Film Festival

The Atlantic Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its 36th annual festival, happening in HalifaxSeptember 15-22. Films can be submitted via either FilmFreeway or Without A Box. The Early Bird Deadline isMay 13;; regular deadline is June 3.

Vancouver International Film Festival

Named one of MovieMaker's 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee, VIFF is now accepting submissions of both

feature and short films from any genre for its 2016 festival, which runs September 29-October 14. Featuring

the work of both established and emerging filmmakers, this will once again be a spectacular showcase of

cinema in one of the world's most beautiful cities.

The regular deadline is May 13, and extended deadline is June 10. For more details, and to submit, click here.

BAFTA Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival

Entries are open for the 6th edition of the BAFTA Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival, one of the UK’s

leading short film festivals and most exciting cinematic events. ASFF celebrates innovation and excellence in

filmmaking and presents many opportunities for industry engagement.

In 2015, ASFF attracted 20,000 admissions across the four day event including industry, filmmakers and

thousands of festival-goers providing a dynamic platform for emerging and established filmmakers to showcase

their work to a wider, international audience.
