Kirkby Lonsdale Brass BandKirkby Lonsdale Brass Band is one of the oldest in the country. Their earliest record is from 1821 when the band played for the coronation celebrations of King George IV. They led the procession for the coronation celebrations for Queen Victoria in 1836 and escorted Queen Adelaide, widow of William IV on her visit to the town in 1840. In 1936 they played for the then Prince of Wales and again for Prince Charles on his visit to Kirkby Lonsdale in 1993.

GrantsPaul Pfeuti Young Musician TrustPaul Pfeuti was an inspirational and gifted musician. Paul took his fi rst teaching position in 1967 when he became music master at Douglas High School on the Isle of Man. In the early 1980s Paul moved back to his native north west to Bentham Grammar School and after several unsuccessful attempts at retirement joined QES’s visiting music staff , teaching piano since 1996.
Paul died suddenly in the week after Christmas 2008. His family decided his legacy should befi t his lifelong passion and created the Paul Pfeuti Young Musicians’ Trust to enable children to access music and further development of it where fi nances may not always permit. Paul’s wife, daughter and the rest of his family remain closely involved with fundraising for the trust and deciding how funds are allocated.
The Trust have awarded over £2500 to local young people to help with the cost of exam fees, travel expenses to auditions and purchasing new instruments.
To apply – please download an application form from www.queenelizabeth.cumbria.co.uk and click on the Arts & Music section or telephone Helen Baines on 015242 71275
If you would like to contribute by way of a donation to the fund please contact Helen Baines.
ReviewsI was awarded a grant by the Paul Pfeuti Young Musician
Trust to help with the cost of attending the National
Schools’ Symphony Orchestra Course.
I was delighted to be selected for the course, and was really excited when I arrived at Malvern College. I didn’t know anyone before I went, but everyone was really friendly and it was fantastic to meet so many people who share my love of music. There were players from diff erent schools all over the country so it was a privilege to be able to represent QES.
The week began with a full rehearsal very soon after we’d arrived. I was unsure where I’d be seated as the standard in the orchestra was very high, and I was really pleased to be given a place in the fi rst violins, a great source of orchestral experience for me as I haven’t played fi rst violin in an advanced orchestra before.
The parts were very technically demanding but fun to play! The start of the week was mainly sectional rehearsals, which were hard work as the fi rst violin tutor was tough on technique meaning you had to be constantly aware of everything in the music. The second half of the week was mainly full rehearsals. It was amazing seeing it all come together as the week progressed. We played for six or seven hours a day as there was a lot of music to be covered in a short space of time.
The concert at the end of the week as part of the Three Choirs Festival was a huge success. We played Peter and the Wolf and a newly-commissioned suite by composer Patrick Doyle as part of the programme that lasted over an hour. It was a wonderful feeling playing with such a strong orchestra, and I feel I can take a lot of experience back to my school and county groups.
