1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Thriller Genre

Our product was based within the thriller genre so therefore we had to examine several different media piece to see what they incorporated to create an effects thriller product. We look at films such as…

Basic Features

After analysing theses film when then came to the conclusion that we wanted to include the following in our piece:•Enigma code•Relation to a mysterious death/murder•Abandoned location• A Mysterious intruderWe felt that all of these element combined would effectively build tension and draw in the audience.

Enigma CodesWe created the enigma codes in several different ways.

Our very first part for the enigma code was the newspaper article as this is the first indication to the reader that the protagonist is in a dangerous location due to the past murder committed there.

The connotation of death instantly make the audience question what happened here and how the protagonist is linked to this death.

We the decided to continue the enigma by then alerting the audience that the protagonist is not alone. This concealed and mysterious shot of the unknown person then again build tensions the audience is aware of something that the main character is not. Its also creates a slight sense of irony as the supposed “Abandoned house” isn't as empty as once thought...

Abandoned house • It is clear to the audience that the house does not

belong to the main character due to the establishing shot at the beginning of the sequence.

• Along with the newspaper article leads the audience to assume that the house is empty and abandoned.

Presentation of charactersThe tilt shot used on our protagonist was used to

demonstrate his sense of power. This was slightly going against the media convention as in most cases the protagonist is given eyelevel shots to make the character more relatable to the audience.

• However this was then juxtaposed by the use of over the shoulder shot for the antagonist who was given a sense of mystery due to his concealed identity. Also the over the shoulder of Jamie’s make him seem slightly vulnerable as his neck is exposed. This camera shot is often used in other thrillers to portray a character in danger.

• Therefore the dominance that is created for the main character is then overpowered by the antagonists presentation as he is presented as more powerful character.

• The concealed identity of the antagonist then builds tensions as because in the general convention in the thriller film genre its that the identity of the “killer” is revealed.

• Our production we go against this convention and wait to reveal the killer, as a result creating tension and encouraging the audience to continue watching.

Conclusion

Overall our production has a mixture of convention within some of which we decided to abide by and other we choose to go against. I think that the conventions in our media piece work well and convey the correct message that we wanted to present to our audience.
