Discovers Shapes

Maddie had played all morning in the bright,

yellow sun with her new friend, Sammy the

Snowman.

They built snow castles, they slid down the hill

together, and they played hide-and-seek

in the fluffy, white snow.

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5”

counted Maddie, while Sammy went to

hide. “Ready or not, here I come!” said

Maddie.5

Maddie began to look for Sammy. She looked,

and she looked, but she could not find him

anywhere. When Sammy hid in the fluffy white

snow,

he was hard to find. 6

“Come out, come out wherever your are,”

called Maddie to Sammy.

And out popped Sammy from his hiding place.7

“Maddie,” said Sammy the Snowman, “did you know that there were 13 triangles hiding

with me?”8

Sammy and Maddie began to count. They counted 13 triangles.

Soon, a little boy in a green scarf came along, “Can I play with you?” he asked. “Oh, yes,” said

Maddie, But Sammy’s hard to find in the snow,” she told

the little boy in the green scarf.

While Sammy went to hide, they counted.10

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5.Ready or not, here we come!”

And they began to look. They looked and they looked, but they could not find Sammy.

“Come out, come out wherever your are,” they called to Sammy.

And out popped Sammy from his hiding place.

“Did you know,” said Sammy “I found one big circle hiding with me.” And he pointed to the

sun.

Along came a big, brown dog, and a little orange kitten. “Can we play with you?” they asked. “Oh yes,” said Maddie, “but Sammy’s hard to find in the snow,” said the little boy in the bright green

scarf.

While Sammy went to hide, they counted.

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5.Ready or not, here we come!”

And they began to look. They looked and they looked, but they could not find Sammy.

“Come out, come out wherever your are,” they called to Sammy. 17

And out popped Sammy from his hiding place.

“Oh,” said Sammy, “I can see rectangles that are hiding from us.” Can you see them too?” he asked his friends. And he began to

count the rectangles he saw hiding. . .

Along came a little red bird. “Can I play with you?” she asked. “Oh yes,” they all answered.

“But Sammy’s hard to find in the snow,” they told the little red bird.

While Sammy went to hide, they counted. 20

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5.Ready or not, here we

come!”

And they began to look. They looked, and they looked, and they looked, and they looked, but

they could not find Sammy anywhere!

“Come out, come out wherever your are,” they called to Sammy.

But all that was left of Sammy, on this bright sunny day, was his big, black square

hat. 23

But don’t you worry, Sammy the Snowman will be back to play. He’s just

in a different shape for today.

Activities to Extend Learning

Activity #1: Teach the children how to draw the trees, snowman, and animals using circle, triangle, square, and rectangular shapes.

Activity #2: Have the children go on a treasure hunt to identify different shapes in the classroom.

Activity #3: Hide several cut-outs of circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles around the room have the children find one of each shape.

Activity #4: Using play doh, invite children to use cookie cutters of various sizes, in the shape of a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Show them how to make the characters in the story by using the shapes they have cutout.
