Curriculum Guide Objective:The student will be able to make healthy food choices and use proper oral hygiene techniques that lead to a healthy smile.

a) Concepts: Becoming familiar with how food choices and proper oral care techniques affect a healthy mouth.

b) Vocabulary: dentist, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, healthy vs. unhealthy eating choices, stain, plaque, tarter

3) Motivation a) Relate to Previous Learning  “Why do you think we need healthy teeth?” “What do we use our mouths for?” (eating, drinking, talking, whistling, funny faces, smiling, etc.)

b) Relate to Student Experience  Discuss with children the difference in being healthy vs. being sick. Can they        participate in the same activities when they are sick as when they are healthy? c) Type of Student Participation    Group Discussion, Individual Creativity, Music, Hands-On

4) Strategies/Activities/   Distributed Practice/Intervention Let’s Brainstorm! (opening activity) As a class, use Post-Its to share ideas! Pick a spot somewhere in your classroom   such as a blank wall or whiteboard and give each student 3 Post-Its. Instruct your  students to answer the following questions on their Post-Its:

  1. Is there anything that scares you about going to the dentist?  2. If you could ask a dentist any question, what would it be?  3. What is your favorite thing about going to the dentist?

You could designate each question to a different colored Post-It or answer one   question at a time. Have all of the students bring their answers up to the designated

spot and then discuss their answers as a group. Address any misconceptions and highlight the great things that happen when you go to the dentist. – This is a great   way to have a “safe” discussion without embarrassing anyone who may think their    question is not good enough to ask.

Points to share:      • Complete cleaning by dental hygienist, who will remove plaque and tarter     (the sticky and rough stuff you can feel on your teeth), while also polishing the teeth • X-rays may be taken to see hidden areas • The doctor will come in to examine all areas of the mouth • Toothbrush – tool used for cleaning teeth      • Toothpaste – helps us to have strong healthy teeth      • Floss – finds the food our toothbrush misses      • “Don’t rush the brush.” 2 minute brushing time      • “Don’t wait for the ache.” Schedule a cleaning every 6 months      • 3.2.1. Rule: Eat 3 healthy meals, brush 2 times a day, floss 1 time a day

Recycle Art Birch Trees Pre-Planning: Make sure to order your FREE toothbrushes for your students from Kool Smiles ahead of time and ask your students to bring in their current tooth brush to trade in for a new one! Communication to parents: “We are going to get creative with our old toothbrushes in class soon and we need your help! Please send your child to school with their old toothbrush, cleaned, dried thoroughly, and placed in a Ziploc bag with their name on it. In return, your child will receive a NEW toothbrush on the same day to take home courtesy of Kool Smiles!”

“Time to discuss how we should brush our teeth!”

Questions to open with: • “Does anyone know how long we are supposed to brush our teeth?” • “Do we brush like this?” (Demonstrate the incorrect way first by using a tooth     brush and the Open Mouth Activity sheet provided.) “Why not?” If a child     would like to demonstrate the correct way, have them show the class. If not,   demonstrate the proper techniques yourself. Discuss how improper brushing can cause missed spots, bleeding gums, and bad breath.

Tip to share: “Don’t rush the brush!” You should brush for 2 minutes and here  is how: • Angle the toothbrush slightly up toward your gums.  • Brush back and forth gently in very short strokes along every tooth.  • When you finish brushing the outsides of your teeth, brush the insides  and tops.  • Brush your tongue once you finish with your teeth to remove bacteria and  keep your breath fresh. Share with your students that today you are going to focus on using their old toothbrushes to create some interesting art! For this project, you could also bring in various items to create interesting textures. Some ideas are: bubble wrap, pom-poms, cut potatoes (use as stamps!), buttons, etc. Step 1: Instruct students to paint “birch trees” on white cardstock. They will only want to paint the trunks, all the way from the top to the bottom of the page. Once dried, the birch trees should be cut out. Note: providing pictures of these beautiful trees will help to spark your students’ imagination. Here is a great resource: http://www.2020site.org/trees/birch.html, especially if your class is doing a tree study! What’s in YOUR fridge? “What are some of your favorite foods? What about drinks?” “What if I told you that your favorite food and drink cause your teeth to decay?” “Why do you think certain foods are worse for your teeth than others?”

Accept responses and explain how sugar is the number one worst food for our teeth.

Bad food choices cause bad dental problems when they are not balanced with healthy dental routines. • Soft drinks, both sugar-sweetened and diet, are bad for your teeth in     several ways. The sugar in soft drinks can cause cavities and tooth decay.

Page 5: 1) Curriculum Connections - Kool Smilesmykoolsmiles.com/downloads/ks-3-5.pdf · 1) Curriculum Connections a) Curriculum Guide Objective: The student will be able to make healthy food

Curriculum Guide Objective:The student will be able to make healthy food choices and use proper oral hygiene techniques that lead to a healthy smile.

• Soft drinks are the number one way kids and teenagers ingest added sugar. • With sugar-sweetened drinks, the sugar stays on your teeth for a long time    every time you drink one, making drinks especially bad for your teeth.  • Acids in regular and diet soft drinks can erode tooth enamel, the hard covering      on your teeth, which can lead to more cavities and decay. Mention how soda is      so acidic that cans have a specific liner on the inside to protect the metal from   corroding while the soda is inside. • Sugar-sweetened gum and hard or chewy candies, like lollipops or caramels, are bad for your teeth in the same way that soft drinks are. The sugar in     those candies stays in your mouth and on your teeth for a long time, giving     the sugar more time to cause cavities and decay.

How does this affect the types of foods we eat? Can we still enjoy soda and candy? Of course!

  • Choose sweets that are not sticky and do not stay in your mouth for very long. The good news is the sugar in chocolate is coated in fat, which makes it slip right out of your mouth. • Eat sweets with meals, not as a snack between meals. Your mouth produces    more saliva during meals, which helps to rinse the sugar from your teeth much   more quickly. • Brush your teeth after eating sweets to get the sugar out of your mouth. Note: Instead of brushing after drinking soda, rinse with tap water (contains     fluoride). The high acid content of the soda mixed with the abrasive brushing  can possibly do more harm than good to your enamel.  • If you can’t brush, drink water with fluoride (no bottled water) after eating sweets to rinse your mouth.   • Chew sugar-free gum, which will help your mouth produce saliva and rinse your teeth.

What are some good, healthy options for our teeth?

• Chicken and other lean meats contain calcium and phosphorus, which can help rebuild tooth enamel.  • Crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and celery! They are filled with water      and the chewing massages the gums, stimulating saliva flow, which washes    away acid from your teeth. • Dairy products, which contain calcium! They also help neutralize acids in the mouth.  • Water is the best choice, both for your oral health and overall well-being! Pass out the “What’s in YOUR fridge?” Activity Sheets. 5. Assessment Students are actively listening and responding to questions throughout lesson. Can the student list three reasons why routine dental check-ups      are imporant?  Can the student remember the quick tips?

6. Closure “Why should we make proper oral care an important part of our daily routine?”

Be sure to stress the importance of beginning a healthy habit today. Everyday is an opportunity to build a happy, healthy mouth.

7. Extend and Refine Knowledge Toothbrush Tips: • Use a soft toothbrush and brush gently to keep from damaging your teeth or gums.    • Don’t share a toothbrush with someone else. You can pass germs back and forth.     • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or if the bristles are       flattening out. A worn-out toothbrush will not clean your teeth very well.    • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride, which has been proven to prevent cavities.

Flossing Tips:

     • Don’t be in a hurry when you floss. Take your time to remove all the plaque or    food from between your teeth.    • Floss everyday at a time that works for you. It is more important to floss daily than        it is to floss at a certain time. • Use as much floss as you need, generally about 18”, to clean between each of      your teeth with a clean section of floss. 3.2.1. Rule: Eat 3 healthy meals, brush 2 times a day, floss 1 time a day.

“Don’t rush the brush!” “Don’t wait for the ache!”
