Why Entrepreneurship Summer School?

• Principal purposes:– Build skills to assess and shape opportunities– Build a foundation for developing a business plan – Experience entrepreneurial life – is it for you?– ‘Forces’ immersion in a market/industry that

intrigues you – ‘Plan A’ is just the way in…?

• Our signature program in entrepreneurship

• Students with genuine ideas they wish to pursue now• Those who would value working closely with a

mentor from the entrepreneurial community• Students who want to check out their aptitude &

liking for an entrepreneurial life• Those who want to maximise their entrepreneurship

experience and exposure at LBS

Overview of ESS 2011

• 13 May: Application deadline• 10-15 July: Block week• Mid July through early September

– Field-based research into your opportunity, working individually (or in teams of 2-3)

• 4-6 August: Thursday-Saturday (re-energise)• 25 August: Optional dress rehearsal • 2-3 September: Final presentations, course

wrap-up, and awards dinner

The Block Week & Weekend

• Lots of stuff that isn’t taught elsewhere:– Cold-calling, interview skills– On-street market research– Networking skills– Legal, IP– Elevator pitches, presentation skills– Entrepreneurial team-building– Hustle as strategy

• Plus – a cast of ‘thousands’:– Panel discussions with investors, entrepreneurs– ESS alumni – Peer group support– Experienced judges, mentors

• Field-based research on your opportunity, working under the guidance of– A mentor from our networks, including our

LBS business angels (Enterprise 100) and growing community of accomplished entrepreneurs…

– Anywhere in the world is OK

The Outcome:Feasibility Study Presentations

• Thursday 25 August: Optional dress rehearsal with video

• Fri-Sat 2-3 September: Final presentations– Delivered to and graded by panel of investors

and successful entrepreneurs– No punches pulled!

• Prizes for best argued ‘viable’ & ‘non-viable’
