You think I’m going to write about how the Seafood and Wine Festival went but I cannot. It would be too easy and quite frankly my deadline is one week before the event will even open. I will instead focus on all the work that is required to make an event this large happen.
Starting with all the vendors, which have been solicited and processed and sold out since September of last year, there are 155 confirmed. Then there is the tent. For those of you who are campers, this is nothing like what you set up, this is a 50,000 square foot structure which is delivered by 18 wheelers and massive fork lifts, compressors and brute force is required for set up. Then the sweeping and curbing crews lay down the cement that will channel away any water if it rains. Next comes the canvas walls and roofs and quickly after that the electricians and sound system crews.
The operations guys (who are all volunteers) start with forklifts and barriers and never seem to stop working. They place all the signage and trash cans and furniture and and and. Truly these hard working volunteers are the unsung heroes that make set up and take down go smoothly.
I have not forgotten all the wine competition judging; which is no small task, since there were 171 different entries this year for Commercial Wine Competition. The Amateur side of the competition is no small feat either.
Along the way there is the marketing and ticketing and sponsorship gathering which requires time and attention. Planning for security and the safety of all the guests and workers is ramped up a month before the event and there is no shortage of meetings and people on preparedness. I’ve mentioned some but certainly not all that has been taking place during February. So, what people see on game day is really a combination of a massive effort of many people and volunteers.
Looking forward, get your tickets for the Chamber Banquet and Balloons Auction which is the next big event on April 9th. Also, there is a Business After Hours (March 10th at the Rogue) which is free to members. Leadership Lincoln program is in full swing and will head to the Angel Job Corps for their class, and the weekly lunch meetings are every Friday at noon. Check out the calendar in this Communique to see specific times and location.

We just wrapped up the 39th Annual Seafood & Wine Festival. Here are a few statistics from this years event.
26,710 The number of people that attended. Yes it is a record, about 10% higher than last year. Here is the scoop on that number. Only about 50% (slightly fewer) are paid admission. We have a considerable number of Sponsor/VIP passes that go out, donations throughout the year, it includes vendors, volunteers (3 hour shift gives you a 3 day pass) and repayment for favors done by good people who know how to move mountains but don’t want recognition. It’s what it takes to open the doors. It doesn’t mean that only 50% of the people that attend don’t spend money. They do. Lots of it. Town fills, hotels are sold out, meals are served, gas is pumped
and the spending at the festival with all vendors including two dozen local non-profits sustains our economy during the drudgery of winter. A breakdown by day…
2832 Thursday
8469 Friday
11,796 Saturday
3613 Sunday
29 The number of local non-profits that participate to raise funds for their clubs and organizations.
2.6 The number in millions of dollars-a conservative estimate-of economic impact on Lincoln County. The estimate doesn’t include vendor income at the event. We want to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors, patrons and community for your hard work and help with this year’s Festival. Many thanks to our presenting sponsor Chinook Winds Casino Resort for their past, present and future support! It’s Kind of a Big Deal. On another note, I hope that you will join us for the Chamber luncheon on March 25th at the Best Western. We will be hearing from representatives from ODOT with updates and information about the Highway 20 Pioneer Mountain/Eddyville project. Recent headlines gave a worst-case scenario report about potential closures from June through October that is certain to have a significant impact on residents and visitors of Newport and Lincoln County. We (Chamber, Port, City, County) have had, and have scheduled several meetings with ODOT to identify impacts, challenges and solutions associated with the long awaited completion of this project. Please RSVP if you are going to attend so we can plan accordingly and watch your Chamber email and Social Media for additional information.
