Prep Schools

Dear parent Week II, crazy weather and already the holidays are a distant memory. We hope you are settling back into the swing of things. It was lovely to see so many of you at Meet the Teacher evening last week and to welcome a large number of new families to the school. Whether an ‘old bod’ or new, please don't hesitate to contact your child's class teacher with any questions you may have. Swimming Sports and Forthcoming Watery Events We have certainly hit the ground running this term with the Swimming Sport heats and finals already in the archives. Thank you for the fantastic parental support. It was standing room only at one point on Monday. Congratulations to the school age group champions, and indeed to all the pupils for their efforts. From the results, our team for the Independent Schools’ Champs will be selected for that carnival on 21 March. For Years 4 & 5, there is more water fun to come, with daily swimming lessons in Weeks III and IV. Meanwhile, Year 6 embark on water polo in the second part of term. Information will be emailed home and details put on GrammarNET this week. We cannot stress enough the importance of swimming as a life skill, especially in this island nation, and strongly encourage that those children who were only able to compete in the width events at the sports be enrolled in a good learn-to-swim course. Please ask if you need advice in this. Camp Week Preparations are well underway for Camp, the details of which are on GrammarNET. The Year 8 boys leave on Sunday for Mt Cook, via Geraldine and Ben Avon, while Years 6 & 7 boys and girls are bound for Hanmer on Monday. We wish them well (and sunshine!), along with the usual plea that every item taken on camp is clearly named. For those classes remaining at school, the days proceed as usual, with minor timetable changes to accommodate those staff absent on camp and the aforementioned swimming lessons. Pupil Leave We understand that occasionally it may be necessary for family or cultural reasons for your child to be absent from school. In such instances, we ask you to note the following section from the Pupil Enrolment contract, and in particular the requirement to contact the Headmaster in writing. s.6. Attendance

I/we agree and accept that: • the School requires punctual and regular attendance from all pupils; • lateness or absence must be explained in writing by us on the day of my/our child’s

return; • leave from School during term time must be applied for in writing beforehand by us, and is

granted at the Headmaster’s discretion; and • continual unjustified absence may constitute reasonable grounds to terminate the

enrolment of a pupil. Named clothing No doubt the return to school was preceded by a tedium of name-tape sewing. Please ensure that all school items are clearly named. This is especially important with the roll-out of the new sports uniform.

Haircuts It seems early to be nagging about haircuts but some boys seem to have missed the pre-term trim. The school rule asks that boys’ hair be clear of their ears and off the collar (ie, cut short enough to clear the collar for most of the duration between cuts!) A Sailing Success

Congratulations to Kirah Willems (7G) who gained second place in the Estuary Pennant Race for Optimist dinghies at Mt Pleasant Yacht

Club on 30 January. It was a Canterbury Champs race so a great result for her. Unfortunately the Canterbury Schools' Champs are on 14 February, so she is unable to represent Cathedral Grammar as it

clashes with camp. Next year!

Your Care Matters We are looking for people in your community who care about kids. You could make a difference in the life of a child by opening up your home to a child who needs you. This could be just for a weekend, or for longer-term care; there are several options. If you are interested in finding out more about the ways you could care for a child, please contact: Marney Holthouse Child, Youth and Family Christchurch Phone: 961 5582

Fees Accounts have been sent out by email. If you have not received your account, please contact Diane in the office: [email protected]. Bursar

Virtue For The Week:

Responsibility

What is Responsibility?

Being responsible means that others can depend on you. You are willing to be accountable for your actions. When things go wrong and you make a mistake, you make amends instead of excuses. When you are responsible, you keep your agreements. You give your best to any job. Responsibility is the ability to respond ably. It is a sign of growing up.

Signs of success

- You take your agreements seriously - You respond ably by doing things to the best of

your ability - You are willing to do your part - You admit mistakes without making excuses - You are willing to make amends - You give your best to whatever you do

Virtue for Week 3: Reverence

Pre-School

Dear parent Welcome back to Term I. We are delighted to have Wylie Armstrong, Scarlett Bailey, Whatuariki Brazier, Isaac Choi, Caroline Conaghan-Carr, Andrei Crainic, Caitlin Dufty, Madeleine Glossop, Abbie Hartstonge, Merrin Luscombe, Arthur O'Connell, Isaac Suardi and Shu Rui Sun (Ray) as new members of our Pre-School. Today we welcomed Joseph Howard who is visiting from Wellington for several weeks. We hope that everyone quickly feels part of the school family. On Friday we have the back-to-school barbecue, a good family event and we hope that you willl be able to attend. Next Tuesday we have a morning tea at 10:00am in the Pre-School for parents. We hope that everyone will be able to attend. Morning tea will be supplied. This is a good chance for parents to meet each other. Our supply of tissues has dwindled so we would appreciate a large box from everyone please. We ask that parents put sunscreen on their children before coming to Pre-School. We will put a second lot on before lunch. If your child needs a special sunscreen, please give a named container of it to a staff member. Our Inquiry this term is construction. Building plans, photos of buildings or any other resources would be appreciated. Do we have any parents/grandparents that would be prepared to help with some carpentry lessons? Congratulations to Emma Gray and Harry Hanson who received "Huggie Bear" on Friday. Adrienne Winnicott Head of Pre-School

Emma and Oliver used their building skills to create this tower.

Junior School

Dear parent On Monday morning, Samantha Morris, our Head Girl, visited the Junior School to tell the children about her role this year. We were thrilled when Samantha was chosen for this important position as she is one of the impressive pupils who first started in our Pre-School and then blossomed through Junior School. It is a treat for us to see our children growing in confidence and carrying out these leadership roles for the school. The new Prep School upper body strength area is like a magnet to our Junior School children but we are concerned over their safety after some near misses! The safety requirements are designed specifically for Prep School children to suit their size and physical mobility. It has been decided as a result of these concerns that the area should be for Year 4s and above. It also then gives the Year 3 children something special to forward to. Clubs begin next week. Miss Bryant and Mrs Dougan have put in a great deal of organization to acquire exciting opportunities for the children, and I am very grateful for the time they have put into this. Miss Bryant would like to inform the Cricket Club that the cost for their club is now $20 and not the previously mentioned $60. I would be most grateful if you could check the name on your daughter’s hat. Milly Mitchell has lost hers after just the first week and Julia Stewart is still looking for her hat lost at the end of last term. Please could everyone check for us? Assembly items this Friday will be presented by J1S, J1B, J2D and J3E. Our assembly Week III is always a very special one where we celebrate our cultural diversity. The children are asked to dress up in something that represents their family’s cultural heritage and we choose some children to present items that relate to their special background. You might like to begin discussing ideas with your child. Carole Wright Head of the Junior School
