    Purpose

This tutorial shows you how to use the Oracle Universal Ins taller (OUI) to install the Oracle Database 12cso ftware and create a database. You willalso learn how you can use the Database Configuration Assis tant (DBCA) to create additional databases.

    Time to Complete

    Approximately 1 hour

    Introduction

The Oracle Universal Ins taller (OUI) is used to install Oracle Database software. OUI is a graphical user interface utility that enables you to view the

Oracle software that is installed on your machine, install new Oracle Database software, and delete Oracle software that you no longer need to

use. Online Help is available to guide you through the installation process. One of the installation options is to create a database. If you select

database creation, OUI automatically starts Oracle Database Configuration Ass istant (DBCA) to guide you through the process o f creating and

configuring a database. If you do not create a database during ins tallation, you must invoke DBCA after you have ins talled the software to create a

database. You can also us e DBCA to create additional databases.

    Hardware and Software Requirements

Before installing the software, OUI performs several automated checks to ensure that your computer fulfills the basic hardware and s oftware

requirements for an Oracle Database installation. If your computer does not meet a requirement, then an error message is displayed. The

requirements m ay vary depending upon the type of computer and operating system you are using, but include the following:

Minimum of 1 GB of physical m emory

    Sufficient paging space

Installation of appropriate service packs and/or patches

Use of appropriate file system format

Refer to the Oracle Database Installation Guidefor your platform for more information about specific requirements.

    Prerequisites

Before starting this tutorial, you s hould:

Have access to the Oracle Database 12cdistribution media or have downloaded the software from the Oracle web site

Have general knowledge o f product installation

There are two types of Oracle Database ins tallations: basic (also known as typical) and advanced. Choose the typical ins tallation to quickly install

the software with minimal input. The advanced installation enables you to perform a cus tom ins tallation.

Please note that the values displayed in the screenshots may vary from your installation values due to differences in dis k space and memory.

    Basic (Typical) Installation

    1. Log on to your computer as a mem ber of the adminis trative group that is au thorized to install Oracle Database s oftware and create adatabase.

    2. If you are installing from d istribution media , insert the distribution media for Oracle Database into your computer. The Autorun

feature opens the Select a Product to Install window automatically. If you have downloaded the installation software from the Oracle

Web site, follow the instructions on the site to invoke the Oracle Universal Installer.

    3. The Configure Security Updates window appears. Enter your email addressand My Oracle Support passwordto receive security

issue notifications via email. If you do not wish to receive notifications via email, deselect "I wish to receive security updates via My

Oracle Support". Click Nextto continue. Click "Yes" in the confirmation window.
